Inadequate protein intake results in reduced growth and an immune system that is susceptible to disease and infection in early life. It has also been shown to affect school performance and intelligence status. Recent research shows that malnutrition has been associated with intestinal dysbiosis by altering the healthy and pathogenic microbiota that efficiently processes foods or produces vitamins. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of prolonged egg supplementation on growth, blood biochemical indices, and gut microbiome in school-aged Thai children. This study was a cluster randomised controlled trial with parallel design. The study enrolled students from six rural primary schools and were randomly assigned to three groups: (1) whole egg - consumed 10 additional whole chicken eggs/week, (2) protein substitute - consumed a yolk-free egg substitute equivalent to 10 eggs/week, and (3) control group. Results showed that long-term whole egg supplementation significantly increased growth and improved important biomarkers in young school-age children without adverse effects on blood cholesterol levels. Furthermore, it also promoted intestinal microbial diversity by maintaining an intestinal microbiota composition that benefits health. Authors conclude that long-term whole egg supplementation is a feasible, low-cost, and effective intervention. However, further research is needed on the mechanistic effects of egg consumption on gut microbiota and growth.
Abstract
Protein-energy malnutrition still impacts children's growth and development. We investigated the prolonged effects of egg supplementation on growth and microbiota in primary school children. For this study, 8-14-year-old students (51.5% F) in six rural schools in Thailand were randomly assigned into three groups: (1) whole egg (WE), consuming 10 additional eggs/week (n = 238) (n = 238); (2) protein substitute (PS), consuming yolk-free egg substitutes equivalent to 10 eggs/week (n = 200); and (3) control group (C, (n = 197)). The outcomes were measured at week 0, 14, and 35. At the baseline, 17% of the students were underweight, 18% were stunted, and 13% were wasted. At week 35, compared to the C group the weight and height difference increased significantly in the WE group (3.6 ± 23.5 kg, p < 0.001; 5.1 ± 23.2 cm, p < 0.001). No significant differences in weight or height were observed between the PS and C groups. Significant decreases in atherogenic lipoproteins were observed in the WE, but not in PS group. HDL-cholesterol tended to increase in the WE group (0.02 ± 0.59 mmol/L, ns). The bacterial diversity was similar among the groups. The relative abundance of Bifidobacterium increased by 1.28-fold in the WE group compared to the baseline and differential abundance analysis which indicated that Lachnospira increased and Varibaculum decreased significantly. In conclusion, prolonged whole egg supplementation is an effective intervention to improve growth, nutritional biomarkers, and gut microbiota with unaltered adverse effects on blood lipoproteins.

Undernutrition in older adults is a problem and the recommendation of increased protein intake may prevent this. However, dietary protein can increase feelings of being full and subsequently reduce the amount of food eaten, which is counterproductive. It is thought that it does this through modulation of the gut microbiota and appetite regulation in the brain. This subgroup analysis of a randomised control trial of 90 older adults with protein intake of <1.0g/kg of adjusted body weight/day aimed to determine if protein intakes of 1.2g/kg of adjusted body weight/day affect gut microbiota composition and appetite. The results showed that gut microbiota composition, brain activity in response to food, and appetite were unaffected by increased protein intake for 6 months. It was concluded that increased protein intake in older adults has no negative effects on gut microbiota or appetite. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to recommend a higher protein diet to older adults with decreased muscle mass or who are undernourished without concerns that it will decrease dietary intake of other nutrients.
Abstract
Expert groups argue to raise the recommended daily allowance for protein in older adults from 0.8 to 1.2 g/kg/day to prevent undernutrition. However, protein is thought to increase satiety, possibly through effects on gut microbiota and central appetite regulation. If true, raising daily protein intake may work counterproductively. In a randomized controlled trial, we evaluated the effects of dietary advice aimed at increasing protein intake to 1.2 g/kg adjusted body weight/day (g/kg aBW/day) on appetite and gut microbiota in 90 community-dwelling older adults with habitual protein intake <1.0 g/kg aBW/day (Nintervention = 47, Ncontrol = 43). Food intake was determined by 24-h dietary recalls and gut microbiota by 16S rRNA sequencing. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans were performed in a subgroup of 48 participants to evaluate central nervous system responses to food-related stimuli. Both groups had mean baseline protein intake of 0.8 ± 0.2 g/kg aBW/day. At 6 months’ follow-up this increased to 1.2 ± 0.2 g/kg aBW/day for the intervention group and 0.9 ± 0.2 g/kg aBW/day for the control group. Microbiota composition was not affected, nor were appetite or brain activity in response to food-related stimuli. Increasing protein intake in older adults to 1.2 g/kg aBW/day does not negatively impact the gut microbiota or suppress appetite.

Micronutrient supplementation has gained popularity among individuals who want to ensure and maintain their health and wellness. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in laboratory parameters and the quality of life (QOL) among individuals who received different multi-vitamin and multi-mineral (MVMM) formulations. This study is a three-arm non-randomized controlled trial with a total of 72 healthy adult individuals with insufficient levels of total serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Participants were assigned to one of the three groups namely, Hydro-Cell-Key (HCK) granules, vital-life (VTL-7) MVMM capsules, and placebo group (no supplement). Results showed that Vitamin D and beta-carotenoids levels increased in all three groups. Both VTL-7 and HCK had a significantly higher increase in vitamin D compared to the placebo group. Furthermore, secondary laboratory outcomes and QOL did not increase significantly from baseline in any of the three groups. Authors conclude that micronutrient supplement formulation, specifically granule vs. capsule formulation, was found to impact certain laboratory outcomes but not QOL.
Abstract
Background: Multi-vitamin multi-mineral (MVMM) products often come in several single-substance capsules from different manufacturers. However, attempts to mix several vitamins and minerals into one MVMM product have been complicated and often involve legal concerns. This study aimed to comparatively investigate the changes in laboratory parameters and the quality of life (QOL) among individuals who received different MVMM formulations. Methods: This three-arm non-randomized controlled trial was conducted at VitalLife Scientific Wellness Center (VSWC), Bangkok, Thailand. A total of 72 healthy adult individuals with total serum 25-(OH)D level of 20-29 ng/ml were invited to choose from the three available options, namely, (1) Hydro-Cell-Key (HCK®, Hepart AG, Switzerland) contains vitamin D3 2,000 IU, vitamin C 1,000 mg, vitamin E 166 mg, vitamin A 1 mg, coenzyme Q10 30 mg, natural carotenoids 8 mg, and citrus flavonoids 200 mg in granule formulation; (2) VTL-7 (VWSC) contains similar vitamins and minerals but in capsule formulation; and (3) placebo capsule (no supplement). The 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used to measure QOL at baseline, month 3 and 6. A generalized estimating equation (GEE) was used to compare the repeated-measure outcomes across the three groups. This study was registered at the Thai Clinical Trial Registration (TCTR20190205002) and approved by the Bumrungrad International Institutional Review Board (BI-IRB No.258-10-18PhFub). Results: Both VTL-7 and HCK saw a significantly higher increase in vitamin D than placebo at months 3 and 6, i.e., VTL-7 from 25.15 ± 2.13 to 35.53 ± 6.11 (p < 0.001) and 33.38 ± 6.89 (p < 0.001); HCK from 24.25 ± 3.08 to 28.43 ± 5.93 (p = 0.005) and 27.40 ± 5.24 (p = 0.012); and placebo from 24.00 ± 2.73 to 23.05 ± 4.39 (p = 0.273) and 22.30 ± 6.23 (p = 0.200), respectively. Similarly, β-carotenoids of VTL-7 vs. HCK groups significantly increased from 0.88 ± 0.68 vs. 0.94 ± 0.55 at baseline to 3.03 ± 1.79 (p < 0.001) vs. 1.09 ± 0.61 (p = 0.125) and 3.26 ± 1.74 (p < 0.001) vs. 1.15 ± 0.66 (p = 0.064), respectively. These findings were corroborated through the GEE analysis. Other micronutrients at months 3 and 6 did not increase significantly from baseline in any group. The overall QOL among the three groups in terms of physical (p = 0.560) and mental (p = 0.750) health increased but was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The supplements of MVMM in capsule formulation increased the serum levels of some micronutrients to a higher extent than that of granule formulation. Participant adherence remains a potential confounder and should be further explored. Clinical Trial Registration: identifier: TCTR20190205002.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of a ketogenic diet (KD) versus an unspecified standard diet (SD) on body composition and survival in HNC patients undergoing radio(chemo)therapy. This study is a controlled clinical trial. Results show that an individualized KD supplemented with essential amino acids consumed during curative radio(chemo)therapy of HNC patients was able to slow down the negative consequences of therapy on body composition to some extent. Authors conclude that further research of KDs in frail cancer patient populations is required which may help to motivate their implementation as complementary therapies for select patients.
Abstract
PURPOSE Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) are at risk of malnutrition, especially during radiochemotherapy. We aimed to study the impact of a ketogenic diet (KD) versus an unspecified standard diet (SD) on body composition and survival in HNC patients undergoing radio(chemo)therapy. METHODS As part of a controlled clinical trial, non-metastasized HNC patients were enrolled into either a KD (N = 11) or an SD (N = 21) group between May 2015 and May 2021. Body composition was measured weekly by bioimpedance analysis and analyzed using linear mixed effects models. Overall and progression-free survival was assessed during regular follow-up. RESULTS A total of 7 KD and 21 SD patients completed the study and were eligible for comparative analysis. Chemotherapy was significantly associated with declines in all body composition parameters, while the KD had opposing, yet nonsignificant effects. In patients receiving chemotherapy, average weekly reductions of body mass (BM) and skeletal muscle mass (SMM) were 0.9 kg and 0.31 kg in the KD group versus 1.2 kg and 0.57 kg in the SD group, respectively. Patients in the KD group receiving no chemotherapy achieved an average increase of 0.04 kg BM and 0.12 kg SMM per week. After a median follow-up of 42 months (range 6.7-78 months) there were no significant differences in progression-free or overall survival between the groups. CONCLUSION The KD may partially counteract the detrimental effects of radiochemotherapy on body composition in HNC patients. This should encourage further research into KDs in frail cancer patient populations and motivate their implementation as complementary therapy for selected patients.

Cancer cachexia is a multifactorial condition that reveals impairments in energy and protein balance leading to weight loss through the loss of skeletal muscle and body fat. Nutritional status of cancer patients affects therapeutic efficacy, and the disease survival is influenced by the degree of anorexia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids fortified nutrition supplement intervention on nutritional status, quality of life (QOL) and pro-inflammatory cytokine concentrations of cancer patients. This study was a randomised controlled study. Participants (n = 58) included in the study were patients who were in stages between II to IV receiving one or more cancer therapies without taking any nutritional supplements. Both control and experimental groups received regular nutrition counselling and education, while only the experimental group was asked to take oral nutrition supplements (ONS) twice a day (400 ml, 400 kcal). Results show that ONS intervention: - alleviated symptoms of gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting and constipation; - exerted improvements in many of QOL indices; and - did not improve (statistically significant) biochemical markers of nutritional status and concentration level of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Authors conclude that nutritional supplements can improve some of the QOL components which need evidence-based explanation in mechanistic aspects.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients often experience severe malnutrition during cancer therapies due to gastrointestinal dysfunctions including poor digestion and absorption as well as tumor-associated anorexia. In this study, we performed a randomized clinical trial to determine the efficacy of oral nutrition supplement (ONS) enriched with omega-3 fatty acids on nutritional status, quality of life (QOL), and pro-inflammatory indices. METHODS Patients diagnosed with GI cancers were recruited and screened for eligibility. A total of 58 patients were randomly allocated to either the control group (n=27) or the experimental group (n=31). The intervention group received 200 ml ONS twice a day while the control group received routine care. Anthropometrics, Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) score, QOL score and nutrient intake data were collected at baseline, week 4 and week 8. Blood was drawn for biochemical assessments. Nine patients from each group dropped out of the study Forty patients (18 control patients and 22 intervention patients) completed the study. RESULTS This study showed that ONS intervention improved PG-SGA scores in the intervention group (p<0.01). Scores of physical functioning score and role functioning were declined only in the control group and the difference between week 8 and baseline for role functioning was significant (p<0.001). Fatigue score was steadily decreased in the experiment group, and the differences between week 8 and baseline was significant between two groups (p<0.02). However, no statistically significant improvement in biochemical markers of nutritional status and pro-inflammatory cytokine concentrations were found. These results suggests that ONS intervention for 8 weeks improves PG-SGA scores and QOL scores in patients undergoing cancer therapy.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a series of liver diseases caused by long-term heavy drinking. Lipid metabolism disorder often occurs in people with alcoholic liver injury. Treatment is mainly a combination of alcohol abstinence, improving nutrition, treating the liver injury, and preventing or reversing the progress of liver fibrosis or promoting liver regeneration. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus casei on lipid metabolism and intestinal microflora in patients with alcoholic liver injury. This study was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. A total of 181 ALD patients were recruited and randomly assigned to one of the three groups; low-dose group, high-dose group and positive control group (+ there was another group of 20 healthy people which served as normal control group). Results showed disorder of lipid metabolism, intestinal flora imbalance and inflammation in patients with alcoholic liver injury. Furthermore, after supplementation of Lactobacillus casei, there was a significant increase in the amount of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Authors conclude that Lactobacillus casei supplementation can improve lipid metabolism and regulate intestinal flora disorders in patients with alcoholic liver injury.
Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study aims to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus casei on lipid metabolism and intestinal microflora in patients with alcoholic liver injury. METHODS In a double-blind randomized controlled trial, 158 recruited alcoholic liver injury patients were randomized to three treatments for 60 days: low-dose group (LP, n = 58, 100 ml of Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LcS)), high-dose group (HP, n = 54, 200 ml of LcS), and positive control group (PC, n = 46, 100 ml of special drinks without active Lactobacillus casei). Another group of 20 healthy people was served as normal control group (NC). RESULTS The serum levels of TG and LDLC in the HP group were significantly decreased by 26.56% and 23.83%, respectively than those in the PC group (P < 0.05). After supplementation of Lactobacillus casei, there was a significant increase in the amount of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium when compared with the PC group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Supplementation of Lactobacillus casei can improve lipid metabolism and regulate intestinal flora disorders in patients with alcoholic liver injury.

Despite the increase in life expectancy, there is no corresponding increase in healthy life expectancy. Lifestyle changes appear to be fundamental in increasing healthy life expectancy, and adequate nutrition is enormously important, given that malnutrition (i.e., undernutrition), particularly as protein-energy deficit is very common amongst the elderly population. It has been suggested that the aging process significantly affects protein metabolism and enhances the muscle wastage that accompanies undernutrition and sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a specific branched-chain amino acids enriched mixtures (BCAAem) compared to diet advice to promote mitochondrial function and improve clinical outcomes, particularly muscle and cognitive performance, in malnourished elderly community-dwelling subjects. This study is a parallel, randomised, controlled, open-label trial. One hundred and fifty-five malnourished elderly patients were enrolled. The participants were randomly assigned to one of the two groups: diet advice, summarised in an easy-to-use brochure for lay persons or BCAAem supplements. Results show that amelioration of nutritional status is associated with improvement in general health status, muscle and cognitive performances in old, malnourished patients. In fact, the diagnosis of malnutrition and its treatment, albeit using different approaches, is fundamental in improving the patients’ general health and nutritional status. Authors conclude that BCAAem treatment in old, malnourished patients may be a good strategy to ameliorate the bioenergetic capacity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells.
Abstract
RATIONALE Malnutrition often affects elderly patients and significantly contributes to the reduction in healthy life expectancy, causing high morbidity and mortality. In particular, protein malnutrition is one of the determinants of frailty and sarcopenia in elderly people. METHODS To investigate the role of amino acid supplementation in senior patients we performed an open-label randomized trial and administered a particular branched-chain amino acid enriched mixture (BCAAem) or provided diet advice in 155 elderly malnourished patients. They were followed for 2 months, assessing cognitive performance by Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), muscle mass measured by anthropometry, strength measure by hand grip and performance measured by the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, the 30 s Chair Sit to Stand (30-s CST) test and the 4 m gait speed test. Moreover we measured oxidative stress in plasma and mitochondrial production of ATP and electron flux in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. RESULTS Both groups improved in nutritional status, general health and muscle mass, strength and performance; treatment with BCAAem supplementation was more effective than simple diet advice in increasing MMSE (1.2 increase versus 0.2, p = 0.0171), ATP production (0.43 increase versus -0.1, p = 0.0001), electron flux (0.50 increase versus 0.01, p < 0.0001) and in maintaining low oxidative stress. The amelioration of clinical parameters as MMSE, balance, four meter walking test were associated to increased mitochondrial function. CONCLUSIONS Overall, our findings show that sustaining nutritional support might be clinically relevant in increasing physical performance in elderly malnourished patients and that the use of specific BCAAem might ameliorate also cognitive performance thanks to an amelioration of mitochondria bioenergetics.

Undernutrition during childhood may contribute to brain impairments resulting in reduced learning and understanding, which may be irreversible. Foods that are fortified with added vitamins and minerals may help to promote brain regeneration in those who are malnourished. This randomised control trial aimed to assess the effects of a new fortified food on memory and an iron rich component of blood in 1059 children aged 15 months to 7 years. The results showed that memory improved in children under 4 years old, but this was not observed in children over 4 years. Iron rich components of the blood were also increased in children under the age of 4 years but again remained unchanged in those over 4 years old. It was concluded that food fortification was of benefit to memory, brain function and iron rich blood components in children under the age of 4 years old. Although tested in a low-income country, these results may be translatable into middle and affluent countries where children are malnourished due to an unhealthy diet. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand the importance of a balanced nutritious diet for a child’s learning and the possibility of recommending fortified foods to children who are malnourished.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effects of food supplementation on improving working memory and additional measures including cerebral blood flow in children at risk of undernutrition. DESIGN Randomized controlled trial. SETTING 10 villages in Guinea-Bissau. PARTICIPANTS 1059 children aged 15 months to 7 years; children younger than 4 were the primary population. INTERVENTIONS Supervised isocaloric servings (≈1300 kJ, five mornings each week, 23 weeks) of a new food supplement (NEWSUP, high in plant polyphenols and omega 3 fatty acids, within a wide variety and high fortification of micronutrients, and a high protein content), or a fortified blended food (FBF) used in nutrition programs, or a control meal (traditional rice breakfast). MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS The primary outcome was working memory, a core executive function predicting long term academic achievement. Additional outcomes were hemoglobin concentration, growth, body composition, and index of cerebral blood flow (CBFi). In addition to an intention-to-treat analysis, a predefined per protocol analysis was conducted in children who consumed at least 75% of the supplement (820/925, 89%). The primary outcome was assessed by a multivariable Poisson model; other outcomes were assessed by multivariable linear mixed models. RESULTS Among children younger than 4, randomization to NEWSUP increased working memory compared with the control meal (rate ratio 1.20, 95% confidence interval 1.02 to 1.41, P=0.03), with a larger effect in the per protocol population (1.25, 1.06 to 1.47, P=0.009). NEWSUP also increased hemoglobin concentration among children with anemia (adjusted mean difference 0.65 g/dL, 95% confidence interval 0.23 to 1.07, P=0.003) compared with the control meal, decreased body mass index z score gain (-0.23, -0.43 to -0.02, P=0.03), and increased lean tissue accretion (2.98 cm2, 0.04 to 5.92, P=0.046) with less fat (-5.82 cm2, -11.28 to -0.36, P=0.04) compared with FBF. Additionally, NEWSUP increased CBFi compared with the control meal and FBF in both age groups combined (1.14 mm2/s×10-8, 0.10 to 2.23, P=0.04 for both comparisons). Among children aged 4 and older, NEWSUP had no significant effect on working memory or anemia, but increased lean tissue compared with FBF (4.31 cm2, 0.34 to 8.28, P=0.03). CONCLUSIONS Childhood undernutrition is associated with long term impairment in cognition. Contrary to current understanding, supplementary feeding for 23 weeks could improve executive function, brain health, and nutritional status in vulnerable young children living in low income countries. Further research is needed to optimize nutritional prescriptions for regenerative improvements in cognitive function, and to test effectiveness in other vulnerable groups. Despite the advantages of chemotherapy, it can cause cancer-related malnutrition leading to both reduced quality of life and reduced survival rate. Oral nutritional supplements (ONSs) provide balanced nutrients, calories, and protein to complement insufficient oral intake, and ONS provision during treatment may improve nutritional status. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of ONS on nutritional status in patients undergoing chemotherapy for pancreatic and bile duct cancer. Patients were randomly allocated to the ONS group (15) and non-ONS group (19) and dietary intake and body weight were assessed at weeks 1, 2, 4 and 8. Body composition and quality of life was assessed at baseline and week 8. This study found the supply of ONS helped promote health by increasing body fat mass, improving quality of life and decreasing fatigue symptoms in pancreatic and bile duct cancer patients. These results were more pronounced in patients in the first cycle of chemotherapy. Based on these results, the authors conclude ONS may improve nutritional status by increasing fat mass and/or maintaining the body composition of patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Abstract
Chemotherapy may negatively affect nutritional status and quality of life (QOL) in pancreatic cancer patients. Our aim was to investigate the beneficial effects of oral nutrition supplements (ONS) on pancreatic and bile duct cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Among patients with progressive pancreatic and bile duct cancer receiving chemotherapy, the ONS group (n = 15) received two packs of ONS daily for 8 weeks while the non-ONS group (n = 19) did not. Anthropometric measures, dietary intake, nutritional status, and quality of life were assessed. ONS significantly increased daily intakes of energy, carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids at 8 weeks compared to the baseline. After 8 weeks, fat mass significantly increased in the ONS group. For patients in their first cycle of chemotherapy, body weight, fat-free mass, skeletal muscle mass, body cell mass, and fat mass increased in the ONS group but decreased in the non-ONS group. Fat mass increased in second or higher cycle only in the ONS group. Patient-generated subjective global assessments (PG-SGA) and fatigue scores in the Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (QLQ-C30) improved in the ONS group. ONS might improve nutritional status by increasing fat mass and/or maintaining the body composition of pancreatic and bile duct cancer patients with chemotherapy, especially those in the first cycle, and alleviate fatigue symptoms.

Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a chronic debilitating inflammatory bowel disease that may need lifetime management. Dietary management of UC by eliminating food antigens that may be causing a delayed immune response is one of the approaches used widely to manage the disease. Food intolerance, mediated by immunoglobulin G antibodies in response to food antigens that are otherwise harmless, could be one cause of UC. Low levels of digestive enzymes may result in poor digestion of glucose, amino acids, and glycerol, followed by an immune reaction that leads to food sensitivities. Ninety-seven UC patients were enrolled in this open-label, stratified, prospective, randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effect of an elimination diet versus a sham diet (a normal healthy diet). Following an IgG-specific exclusion diet for six months resulted in the alleviation of UC symptoms and an improvement in health-related quality of life. Further studies are needed to confirm the effectiveness of the exclusion diet since the intervention group did not show a significant reduction in IgG antibody levels. These results can be used by healthcare professionals to understand the potential role of exclusion diets in the management of UC.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Most patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) rely predominantly on medication for disease control. Diet interventions can reduce pharmaceutical expenditures and prolong remission. We designed a prospective study to evaluate whether an immunoglobulin G (IgG)-guided exclusion diet would improve symptoms and quality of life (QoL) in patients with UC. METHODS The 6-month diet intervention included 97 patients with UC, who were randomly divided into an intervention group (n = 49) and a control (n = 48) group. Individual diet plans were created for the intervention group according to IgG titers; the control group ate a healthy diet as normal. Observational indices included disease activity, extraintestinal manifestations, nutritional status, and QoL. Relationships between food-specific IgG antibodies and these indices were also analyzed. RESULTS At baseline, there were no significant differences between the groups. Food-specific IgG antibodies were detected in 70.10% of participants. After intervention, the Mayo score was significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group (2.41 ± 0.89 vs 3.52 ± 1.15, P < 0.05). The number of patients with extraintestinal manifestations decreased from 7 to 2 in the intervention group and from 6 to 5 in the control group. As for nutritive indices, the intervention group had higher mean body mass index and albumin than the control group (23.88 ± 3.31 vs 21.50 ± 6.24 kg/m2, respectively, P < 0.05; 48.05 ± 6.39 vs 45.72 ± 5.48 g/L, respectively, P < 0.05), whereas prealbumin and transferrin were not significantly different between the groups. QoL improved after food exclusion (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS An IgG-guided exclusion diet ameliorated UC symptoms and improved QoL. Interactions between IgG-based food intolerance and UC warrant further study.
