Apart from physical complications, women with polycystic ovary syndrome are more likely to suffer from mental and behavioural disorders. The aim of this study was to examine whether synbiotic supplementation could improve the health quality of life of women with PCOS. This study was a triple-blind, randomised clinical trial which recruited women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Participants were randomly divided into synbiotic or placebo groups for 12 weeks. Results showed that synbiotic supplementation improved the scores of emotional, body hair, weight and infertility domains of PCOSQ-26 compared to placebo group. Authors concluded that 12-week supplementation with synbiotics could noticeably improve the emotional, body hair, weight, infertility and general physical health status of women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Abstract
BACKGROUND There are complicated mechanisms that link the disruption of the gut microbiome to the symptoms and complications of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In this study, an attempt was made to assess the effects of synbiotics on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in women with PCOS . METHODS Fifty-six women with PCOS were enrolled in a triple-blind controlled trial for 12 weeks. They were randomly assigned to receive a daily 2-gram synbiotic sachets (containing Bacillus coagulans (GBI-30), Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus helveticus, and fructooligosaccharide) (n = 28) or placebo (n = 28). To evaluate the impact on the HRQoL, participants were required to fill 26-Item Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (PCOSQ-26), 12-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) pre and post the intervention. RESULTS Finally, statistical analyses were performed on 52 participants who finished the trial. Synbiotic supplementation improved the scores of emotional (P = 0.044), body hair (P = 0.016), weight (P = 0.033) and infertility domains (P = 0.027) of PCOSQ-26 compared to placebo group. The physical score within SF-12 also had a significant enhancement (P = 0.035). No significant improvement was seen in the PSS-10 score at the end of the trial. CONCLUSION This study illustrated the advantageous effects of synbiotics on the health-related quality of life in women with PCOS. Further studies are required to confirm our findings. A role for nutritional factors in vasomotor symptoms was suggested by their low prevalence in areas where traditional dietary staples included grains, legumes, vegetables, and other plant-derived foods. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a dietary intervention on vasomotor symptoms and menopause-related quality of life. This study is a randomised controlled study. Eighty-four participants were randomly assigned, in two cohorts; the intervention or control group. Results show that the dietary intervention led to clinically important reductions in menopausal symptoms. In fact, there was an 88% reduction in moderate-to-severe vasomotor events among participants in the intervention-group, accompanied by weight loss and improvements in physical, psychosocial, and sexual domains. Authors conclude that a dietary intervention, combining a reduced-fat vegan diet and daily soybeans, was associated with a marked reduction in postmenopausal vasomotor events, significant weight loss, and reductions in physical and sexual symptoms.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE Postmenopausal vasomotor symptoms disrupt quality of life. This study tested the effects of a dietary intervention on vasomotor symptoms and menopause-related quality of life. METHODS Postmenopausal women (n = 84) reporting at least two moderate-to-severe hot flashes daily were randomly assigned, in two successive cohorts, to an intervention including a low-fat, vegan diet and cooked soybeans (½ cup [86 g] daily) or to a control group making no dietary changes. During a 12-week period, a mobile application was used to record hot flashes (frequency and severity), and vasomotor, psychosocial, physical, and sexual symptoms were assessed with the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life questionnaire. Between-group differences were assessed for continuous ( t tests) and binary ( χ2 /McNemar tests) outcomes. In a study subsample, urinary equol was measured after the consumption of ½ cup (86 g) of cooked whole soybeans twice daily for 3 days. RESULTS In the intervention group, moderate-to-severe hot flashes decreased by 88% ( P < 0.001) compared with 34% for the control group ( P < 0.001; between-group P < 0.001). At 12 weeks, 50% of completers in the intervention group reported no moderate-to-severe hot flashes at all. Among controls, there was no change in this variable from baseline ( χ2 test, P < 0.001). Neither seasonality nor equol production status was associated with the degree of improvement. The intervention group reported greater reductions in the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life questionnaire vasomotor ( P = 0.004), physical ( P = 0.01), and sexual ( P = 0.03) domains. CONCLUSIONS A dietary intervention consisting of a plant-based diet, minimizing oils, and daily soybeans significantly reduced the frequency and severity of postmenopausal hot flashes and associated symptoms.

Dietary patterns based on the substitution of meals made with unprocessed or minimally processed foods for the consumption of ultra-processed items can be partly blamed for the exponential global growth in the incidence of obesity. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a nutritional intervention based on encouraging the consumption of unprocessed and minimally processed foods rather than ultra-processed products. This study is a two-armed parallel randomised controlled trial conducted among overweight, pregnant women receiving prenatal care in seven primary health units. Participants (n=350) were randomly allocated into the intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). The women allocated into the IG, in addition to the usual prenatal care, were invited to participate in three individualised nutritional counselling sessions conducted by trained nutritionists. Results show that even though there were more women in the IG who had increased their daily intake of minimally processed foods and vegetables at lunch time when compared to the CG, this was not statistically significant. Additionally, there weren’t any differences between the groups in relation to physical activity. Authors conclude that their study was unprecedented in demonstrating that a nutritional counselling intervention based on the NOVA food classification system, together with the practice of physical activity, is effective in preventing excessive gestational weight gain in overweight pregnant women.
Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of a nutritional counselling intervention based on encouraging the consumption of unprocessed and minimally processed foods, rather than ultra-processed products, and the practice of physical activities to prevent excessive gestational weight gain in overweight pregnant women. METHODS This was a two-armed, parallel, randomized controlled trial conducted in primary health units of a Brazilian municipality from 2018 to 2021. Overweight, adult pregnant women (n = 350) were randomly assigned to control (CG) or intervention groups (IG). The intervention consisted of three individualized nutritional counselling sessions based on encouraging the consumption of unprocessed and minimally processed foods rather than ultra-processed products, following the NOVA food classification system, and the practice of physical activities. The primary outcome was the proportion of women whose weekly gestational weight gain (GWG) exceeded the Institute of Medicine guidelines. Adjusted logistic regression models were employed. RESULTS Complete data on weight gain were available for 121 women of the IG and 139 of the CG. In modified intention-to-treat analysis, there was a lower chance of the IG women having excessive GWG [OR 0.56 (95% CI 0.32, 0.98), p = .04], when compared to the CG. No between-group differences were observed for the other maternal outcomes investigated. CONCLUSION The present study was unprecedented in demonstrating that nutritional counselling based on the NOVA food classification system, together with encouraging the practice of physical activity, is effective in preventing excessive weight gain in overweight pregnant women. Preterm birth (PTB) is the primary cause of infant mortality worldwide; and infants who survive have a higher risk of child disability. A recent Cochrane Review concluded that there is strong evidence that omega-3 fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), reduce early PTB (EPTB, <34 weeks gestation) and PTB (<37 weeks gestation) by 42% and 11%, respectively. The aim of this study was to investigate whether DHA intake at baseline alone could identify pregnancies for which high dose DHA supplementation lowered risk of EPTB and PTB. This study used the results from two randomised clinical trials of DHA supplementation during pregnancy in which participants completed the DHA-Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) before randomisation to 200mg/day or high dose DHA, i.e., 800mg/day or 1000mg/day. A total of 1400 participants were enrolled in the two trials. Results show that the DHA-FFQ predicted participants whose risk of EPTB and PTB was reduced by consuming a DHA supplement of 800mg/day or 1000mg/day compared to 200mg/day. In fact, participants who started the study with an average daily DHA intake of <150mg had a 64% lower rate of EPTB and a 24% lower rate of PTB if they were assigned to 800mg/day or 1000mg/day compared to 200mg/day DHA. Authors conclude that the DHA-FFQ identifies women who could benefit from high dose DHA supplementation at least as effectively as a blood measure of DHA but with far fewer barriers for clinical implementation.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Two randomized trials found women with low blood docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; an omega 3 fatty acid) had fewer early preterm births (<34 weeks gestation) if they were assigned to high dose DHA supplementation, however, there is currently no capacity for clinicians who care for pregnancies to obtain a blood assessment of DHA. Determining a way to identify women with low DHA intake whose risk could be lowered by high dose DHA supplementation is desired. OBJECTIVE To determine if assessing DHA intake can identify pregnancies that benefit from high dose DHA supplementation. STUDY DESIGN This secondary analysis used birth data from 1310 pregnant women who completed a 7-question food frequency questionnaire (DHA-FFQ) at 16.8 ± 2.5 weeks gestation that is validated to assess DHA status. They were then randomly assigned to a standard (200 mg/day) or high dose (800 or 1000 mg/day) DHA supplement for the remainder of pregnancy. Bayesian logistic regressions were fitted for early preterm birth and preterm birth as a function of DHA intake and assigned DHA dose. RESULTS Participants who consumed less than 150 mg/day DHA prior to 20 weeks' gestation (n = 810/1310, 58.1%) had a lower Bayesian posterior probability (pp) of early preterm birth if they were assigned to high dose DHA supplementation (1.4% vs 3.9%, pp = 0.99). The effect on preterm birth (<37 weeks) was also significant (11.3% vs 14.8%, pp = 0.97). CONCLUSION The DHA-FFQ can identify pregnancies that will benefit most from high dose DHA supplementation and reduce the risk of preterm birth. The DHA-FFQ is low burden to providers and patients and could be easily implemented in obstetrical practice.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a global health concern. Treatments are often associated with side effects and high costs and therefore it has been identified that there is a need for alternatives. Traditional medicines such as fenugreek, cinnamon, Curcuma longa, berberine, and Momordica charantia have all demonstrated the potential to help control high blood sugar. This review study aimed to summarise the evidence for the use of these traditional medicines in individuals with T2D. Fenugreek was found to act through suppressing the digestion and absorption of starch and inhibiting the uptake of sugar. Its high fibre content is thought to be responsible for slowing the rate of digestion. It is also thought that fenugreek can regulate enzymes involved in the formation of sugar within the body. Studies in animal models have also shown that it may improve insulin function, which is a hormone responsible for lowering blood sugar. These effects translated into clinical evidence of blood sugar lowering and there is significant research demonstrating blood sugar lowering in humans. Cinnamon was found to act through suppressing the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates and improved insulin function. There were several clinical studies reviewed showing that in humans cinnamon can lower blood sugar levels and improve measures of T2D. Curcuma longa (turmeric) was found to suppress production and increase storage of sugar in the liver. It was also found to improve insulin function. In clinical studies it was shown to decrease blood sugar levels, improve measures of T2D and prevent T2D development in those with prediabetes. Berberine was found to exhibit antidiabetic effects through modulation of the gut microbiota and by inhibiting fat accumulation resulting in better insulin function. Several clinical trials were reviewed showing that berberine improved blood sugar levels and measures of T2D. Momordica charantia, commonly known as bitter melon was found to suppress sugar uptake following digestion and improve metabolism by regulating key enzymes. In humans it was shown to increase insulin levels and decrease blood sugar and improve measures of T2D. It was concluded that all these traditional plants have the potential to be used as an alternative or complementary therapy for T2D, however further research is warranted. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to look at introducing these therapies to individuals who have uncontrolled T2D or who are suffering with side effects from medications.
Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complex disease that has become a major global health concern. Given the efficacy of antidiabetic drugs, pharmacological therapy is considered the first-line treatment of T2DM; however, due to their potential side effects and high costs, new and cost-effective treatments with minimal side effects are needed. Medicinal plants have been used for centuries as part of traditional medicine to treat T2DM. Among these, fenugreek, cinnamon, Curcuma longa, berberine, and Momordica charantia have demonstrated different degrees of hypoglycemic activity in clinical studies and animal models. Therefore, the aim of this review is to synthesize the mechanisms of action of five medicinal plants, as well as the experimental and clinical evidence of their hypoglycemic activity from the published literature.

The metabolic effect of bread depends on several qualitative aspects ranging from the type of grain, the amount of carbohydrates, levels of other nutrients, as well as the chemical structure and processing. The aim of this study was to assess the certainty of the evidence and to investigate the overall effect of regular consumption of reformulated breads on glycaemic control in the following groups: a) healthy adults; b) those at risk of developing cardiometabolic disease (e.g., having hypertension, hyperglycaemia, hypercholesterolemia and/or overweight/obesity); and c) those with manifest type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 22 studies and 23 distinct study populations. All studies were randomised controlled trials, 12 of which had a crossover design and 10 had a parallel design. In total, 1037 participants were included. These provided 669 and 595 data points for intervention and control comparisons, respectively. Results show a beneficial effect of reformulated bread variants on fasting blood glucose concentrations. This benefit may be more pronounced among people with manifest T2DM (low certainty of evidence). Authors conclude that bread quality is relevant for metabolic health among adults and that future studies should address its relevance among people at risk of T2DM.

Summary Review:
Overview
This study evaluated the effect of regular consumption of “reformulated breads” on glycemic control among healthy adults, adults at cardiometabolic risk or with manifest T2DM in 22 RCTs with 1037 participants. Compared with “regular” or comparator bread, consumption of reformulated intervention breads yielded lower fasting blood glucose concentrations only among people with T2DM (low certainty of evidence), yet no differences in fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, HbA1c, or postprandial glucose response were identified.

Results
Sub group analysis revealed that the effect of reformulated breads high in dietary fibre, whole grains, and/or functional ingredients on lowering fasting blood glucose was confined to participants with T2DM, with no significant effect among participants without T2DM (0.68 mmol/L; 95% CI: 1.11, 0.36; I2 1⁄4 57% and 0.04 mmol/L; 95% CI: 0.13, 0.05; I2 1⁄4 25%, respectively; P < 0.001).
Subgroup analyses by continent revealed a more pronounced effect on fasting blood glucose concentrations in studies conducted in Asia and the Middle East compared with studies conducted in Europe, North America, and Oceania (MD: 0.84 mmol/L; 95% CI: 1.35, 0.33; I2 1⁄4 52% and MD: 0.04 mmol/L; 95% CI: 0.10, 0.03; I2 1⁄4 0%, respectively; P < 0.001)
Additional subgroup analyses found that the type of control bread, but not the type of intervention bread, affected the pooled effect estimate of fasting blood glucose concentration (P 1⁄4 0.03), with the largest difference reported in studies not describing the control bread used.
Limitations
Publication bias was considered negligible for the studies included in this meta-analysis, and the risk of bias assessment revealed that most of the studies had some concerns of risk of bias. One author is a member of the International Carbohydrate Quality Consortium and another is a member of the GRADE working group.
Strengths
This systematic review and meta-analysis include the focus on high-quality intervention studies (i.e., RCTs using either crossover or parallel design) and the inclusion of longer-term studies (>2 wk) to address the effectiveness of regular bread replacement for glycemic control in everyday life.
Clinical practice applications:
- This data suggests that bread quality is relevant for metabolic health among adults at risk of T2DM. In particular, reformulated breads were found to have a more beneficial impact than regular breads on fasting blood glucose concentrations in adults with TsDM. However, consumption of the reformulated bread (enriched with dietary fiber, whole grains, or functional ingredients) did not lower fasting insulin concentrations compared with the control breads (MD: 1.59 pmol/L; 95% CI: 5.78, 2.59; moderate certainty of evidence)
- Consumption of the reformulated bread did not lower HOMA-IR compared with the control breads (MD: 0.09; 95% CI: 0.35, 0.22; moderate certainty of evidence)

Abstract
Bread is a major source of grain-derived carbohydrates worldwide. High intakes of refined grains, low in dietary fiber and high in glycemic index, are linked with increased risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and other chronic diseases. Hence, improvements in the composition of bread could influence population health. This systematic review evaluated the effect of regular consumption of reformulated breads on glycemic control among healthy adults, adults at cardiometabolic risk or with manifest T2DM. A literature search was performed using MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Eligible studies employed a bread intervention (≥2 wk) in adults (healthy, at cardiometabolic risk or manifest T2DM) and reported glycemic outcomes (fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, HbA1c, and postprandial glucose responses). Data were pooled using generic inverse variance with random-effects model and presented as mean difference (MD) or standardized MD between treatments with 95% CIs. Twenty-two studies met the inclusion criteria (n = 1037 participants). Compared with "regular" or comparator bread, consumption of reformulated intervention breads yielded lower fasting blood glucose concentrations (MD: -0.21 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.38, -0.03; I2 = 88%, moderate certainty of evidence), yet no differences in fasting insulin (MD: -1.59 pmol/L; 95% CI: -5.78, 2.59; I2 = 38%, moderate certainty of evidence), HOMA-IR (MD: -0.09; 95% CI: -0.35, 0.23; I2 = 60%, moderate certainty of evidence), HbA1c (MD: -0.14; 95% CI: -0.39, 0.10; I2 = 56%, very low certainty of evidence), or postprandial glucose response (SMD: -0.46; 95% CI: -1.28, 0.36; I2 = 74%, low certainty of evidence). Subgroup analyses revealed a beneficial effect for fasting blood glucose only among people with T2DM (low certainty of evidence). Our findings suggest a beneficial effect of reformulated breads high in dietary fiber, whole grains, and/or functional ingredients on fasting blood glucose concentrations in adults, primarily among those with T2DM. Compared with normal glucose tolerance, people with prediabetes, especially impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Early intervention can significantly reduce the probability of developing T2DM in the IGT population. The aim of this study was to observe the effect of early probiotic intervention on the conversion of T2DM after 6 years. This study was a follow-on study of the Probiotics Prevention Diabetes Program (PPDP) Study. A total of 39 non-T2DM patients agreed to continue with the follow up of glucose metabolism for the following 4 years. Results showed that supplementation with active probiotics of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Enterococcus faecalis is safe, although it does not reduce the risk of IGT conversion to diabetes mellitus. Authors conclude that more clinical and laboratory studies using large samples and long-term observation are needed to explore the effects of different probiotic strains on IGT.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) after 6 years in patients with IGT who received early probiotic intervention in the Probiotics Prevention Diabetes Program (PPDP) trial. METHODS 77 patients with IGT in the PPDP trial were randomized to either probiotic or placebo. After the completion of the trial, 39 non-T2DM patients were invited to follow up glucose metabolism after the next 4 years. The incidence of T2DM in each group was assessed using Kaplan-Meier analysis. The 16S rDNA sequencing technology was used to analyze gut microbiota's structural composition and abundance changes between the groups. RESULTS The cumulative incidence of T2DM was 59.1% with probiotic treatment versus 54.5% with placebo within 6 years, there was no significant difference in the risk of developing T2DM between the two groups (P=0.674). CONCLUSIONS Supplemental probiotic therapy does not reduce the risk of IGT conversion to T2DM. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a unification of reproductive endocrine and metabolic disorders. Lifestyle and weight management, particularly dietary intake aimed at weight loss, are initial treatment strategies for PCOS. A calorie-restricted diet (CRD) seems to be the optimal dietary pattern for weight management in the PCOS population. The aim of this study was to evaluate modifications in fat distribution, the androgenic state, and metabolic profiles in the overweight and obese PCOS-affected population, who obtained modest and equivalent weight loss induced by a CRD regimen with or without Dulaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist (RA). This study was a randomised controlled trial which enrolled 68 females diagnosed with PCOS. Participants were randomly assigned to receive to one of the two groups: a GLP-1 RA combined with CRD or CRD alone. Results showed that participants in the GLP-1 RA + CRD group took a shorter time to achieve a 7% weight loss goal than those in the CRD group. Furthermore, both interventions had similar positive effects in improving menstrual frequency and reducing levels of blood pressure, insulin, aminotransferases, lipids, total fat mass, total lean mass, and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue mass after equivalent weight loss. Authors conclude that their findings support the importance of dietary intervention as a first-line treatment in women with PCOS, and that GLP-1 RA therapy offers an effective and generally tolerable adjunct therapy to aid in achieving weight targets based on dietary therapy in overweight and obese women with PCOS.
Abstract
The effects of dulaglutide and a calorie-restricted diet (CRD) on visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and metabolic profiles in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have not been extensively investigated. In this study, we investigated whether dulaglutide combined with CRD could further reduce VAT and promote clinical benefits as compared with a CRD regimen alone in overweight or obese PCOS-affected women. Between May 2021 and May 2022, this single-center, randomized, controlled, open-label clinical trial was conducted. Overall, 243 participants with PCOS were screened, of which 68 overweight or obese individuals were randomly randomized to undergo dulaglutide combined with CRD treatment (n = 35) or CRD treatment alone (n = 33). The duration of intervention was set as the time taken to achieve a 7% weight loss goal from baseline body weight, which was restricted to 6 months. The primary endpoint was the difference in the change in VAT area reduction between the groups. The secondary endpoints contained changes in menstrual frequency, metabolic profiles, hormonal parameters, liver fat, and body composition. As compared with the CRD group, the dulaglutide + CRD group had a considerably shorter median time to achieve 7% weight loss. There was no significant between-group difference in area change of VAT reduction (-0.97 cm2, 95% confidence interval from -14.36 to 12.42, p = 0.884). As compared with CRD alone, dulaglutide + CRD had significant advantages in reducing glycated hemoglobin A1c and postprandial plasma glucose levels. The results of the analyses showed different changes in menstruation frequency, additional metabolic profiles, hormonal markers, liver fat, and body composition between the two groups did not differ significantly. Nausea, vomiting, constipation, and loss of appetite were the main adverse events of dulaglutide. These results emphasize the value of dietary intervention as the first line of treatment for PCOS-affected women, while glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist therapy provides an efficient and typically well tolerated adjuvant therapy to aid in reaching weight targets based on dietary therapy in the population of overweight/obese PCOS-affected women.

Snacking has been implicated in a possible reason for many individuals consuming excess calories in their diet and weight gain. However, it has been suggested that not all snacks are not equal or responsible for weight gain. Nuts are high in fat and energy dense, however regular nut consumers are leaner than non-consumers and regular consumption has been shown to result in either no weight gain or less weight gain than should be seen. This randomised control trial aimed to determine the effects of long-term consumption of almonds compared with biscuits. The results showed that neither biscuits nor almonds resulted in a greater amount of weight gain and neither affected blood lipid or sugar levels more than the other. Nut consumption did however improve nutrient intakes and diet quality with increased protein, fat, vitamin E, calcium, copper, magnesium, phosphorous, and zinc. Carbohydrate and sugar intake was also decreased when almonds were the snack. It was concluded that the incorporation of almonds into the diet by habitual snackers improved diet quality without affecting body weight or body composition compared to a biscuit snack. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to encourage snackers to switch from a high energy, low nutrient snack such as biscuits to nuts to improve diet quality and nutrient intakes.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Almonds are nutrient rich, providing a healthier alternative to many snacks. Studies report health benefits with regular almond consumption without adverse weight gain. However, most interventions have been relatively short or have included additional dietary advice. OBJECTIVES Taking a pragmatic approach, we compared consumption of almonds compared with biscuits on body weight and other health outcomes in a population of regular snackers of discretionary foods, hypothesizing the almonds will displace some of the less-healthful snacks in their current diets. METHODS We randomly assigned 136 nonobese habitual discretionary snackers to receive almonds or biscuits daily for 1 y. These isocaloric snacks provided either 10% of participants' total energy (TE) requirements or 1030 kJ (equivalent to 42.5 g almonds), whichever was greater. Anthropometry, blood biomarkers, diet, appetite, sleep, and physical activity were assessed at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 mo, and body composition and RMR at baseline and 12 mo. RESULTS The difference in changes for body weight from baseline to 12 mo was not statistically significant (geometric means: 67.1 and 69.5 kg for almonds and 66.3 and 66.3 kg for biscuits, P = 0.275). There were no statistically significant differences in changes for body composition or other nondietary outcomes (all P ≥ 0.112). Absolute intakes of protein; total, polyunsaturated, and monosaturated fat; fiber; vitamin E; calcium; copper; magnesium; phosphorous; and zinc, and % TE from total monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fat statistically significantly increased from baseline (all P ≤ 0.033), whereas % TE from carbohydrate and sugar statistically significantly (both P ≤ 0.014) decreased from baseline, in the almond compared with the biscuit group. CONCLUSIONS Almonds can be incorporated into the diets of habitual snackers to improve diet quality, without evidence for changes in body weight, compared with a popular discretionary snack food. Menopause is one of the natural processes in a female’s life, the most prominent feature of which is the end of fertility and menstruation. Following the psychosocial changes in this period of life, there is considerable evidence that reproductive hormones, especially oestrogen, may influence mood. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of saffron tea on the postmenopausal women’s happiness This study was a randomised controlled trial which enrolled postmenopausal women. Participants (n=72) were randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. The intervention was the use of 30 mg dried stigmas of the saffron plant which was boiled once; one cup of saffron tea was consumed daily with white rock candy. Whereas the control group consumed lukewarm water and white rock candy. Results show that saffron herbal tea significantly increased the mean score of happiness in postmenopausal women, and there was a statistically significant difference between the intervention and control groups. Authors conclude that people should consult with their doctor, and in case he/she approves, use complementary therapies such as saffron herbal teas along with other drugs prescribed by the doctor.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that menopause can be associated with a variety of negative psychological changes such as depression and anxiety, and improving the mental health status of women during menopause is one of the important priorities and challenges of the health system. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of saffron (Crocus sativus L., Iridaceae) herbal tea on happiness in postmenopausal women. METHODS In this randomized clinical trial which was conducted in 2021, 72 postmenopausal women were enrolled and divided into intervention and control groups. The randomization blocks method was used for random allocation, and the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire was utilized to measure the scores. The intervention included the use of 30 mg of dried stigmas of the saffron plant, which was boiled once (in the morning, in 300 ml of boiling water for 10-15 min) and consumed with white rock candy as one cup of saffron tea daily. To compare the trend of changes and after removing the effect of other variables, generalized estimating equation (GEE) was used. RESULTS There was no significant difference between the intervention and control groups in any of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics (p > 0.05). The results of paired samples t-test showed that the happiness mean score in the intervention group increased significantly (p < 0.001) from 42.93 ± 8.54 to 61.58 ± 8.24, while in the control group, there was no significant difference between the happiness mean score at the beginning and end of the study (p = 0.861). Also, after applying the treatment program in the intervention group, there was a significant difference between the two groups in terms of the happiness mean scores (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Saffron herbal tea had a positive effect on reducing depression and increasing the happiness score; thus, it is recommended that it should be used as a complementary treatment in consultation with the treating physician. TRIAL REGISTRATION The present study was registered with the code of IRCT20210403050818N1 (Registration date: 09/04/2021) in the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials. It was also approved by the Ethics Committee of Larestan University of Medical Sciences (Approval ID: IR.LARUMS.REC.1399.017).
