A deficiency of the thyroid hormone causes hypothyroidism (HT), whereas Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is mainly an organ-specific autoimmune condition. Both HT and AIT are characterised by low-grade inflammation and inflammation in the thyroid gland. Dietary supplements may offer health benefits; however, previous research findings are inconclusive. This systematic review evaluated twenty-two controlled studies to understand the effectiveness of dietary supplements in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress and improving antioxidant and thyroid parameters in patients with HT or AIT. The efficacy of dietary supplements in improving thyroid health and reducing inflammation and oxidative stress was inconclusive due to the low quality of the included studies and the limited number of available studies. Selenium supplements might be beneficial in improving thyroid parameters and inflammation in patients with HT or AIT. Even though the therapeutic benefits of dietary supplements in treating thyroid disease were inconclusive, healthcare professionals can use them to address the common nutritional deficiencies in people with HT and AIT. Further, large, long-term, robust studies are required to assess the therapeutic utility of different dietary supplements in promoting the health of the thyroid gland.
Abstract
This systematic review aims to summarise the results of controlled trials on dietary supplements (DS) usage and inflammation, oxidative stress, antioxidant status, and thyroid parameter improvement in hypothyroidism (HT)/Hashimoto's thyroiditis (AIT) patients. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (no. CRD42022365149). A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases resulted in the identification of nineteen randomised controlled trials and three non-randomised studies for the review; three studies examined the effect of supplementation with vitamin D, twelve studies-with selenium, and seven studies-with other DS. Based on very limited evidence, the lack of influence of vitamin D supplementation on inflammatory parameters was found, while no studies have examined oxidative stress and antioxidant status parameters, and only one provided results for a single thyroid parameter after an intervention. Some evidence was found proving that selenium supplementation may decrease inflammation and improve thyroid parameters, but reaching a conclusion about its influence on oxidative stress and antioxidant status is not possible because of the insufficient number of studies. Additionally, due to examining other DS (e.g., multicomponent, Nigella sativa, and genistein) only in single studies, conclusions cannot be drawn. Further long-term, high-quality randomised controlled trials are necessary to better understand the influence of DS on inflammation, oxidative stress, and antioxidant status, as well as their potential to improve thyroid gland function in HT/AIT patients.

Pre-eclampsia is hypertension that becomes present after 20 weeks of gestation combined with proteinuria or another maternal organ dysfunction. It causes problems in 3%–5% of all pregnancies and is estimated to cause at least 42 000 maternal deaths annually. Other than early delivery of the fetus, there is no cure for pre-eclampsia. There is little published information on diet and pre-eclampsia, so the aim of this review is to look at a number of dietary factors and to develop a set of nutritional guidelines to reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia in pregnancy. This dietary review looks at: obesity and gestational weight gain and the discussion of weight management interventions. Fibre, probiotics and prebiotics. Specific dietary patterns such as: diets high in fruit and vegetables, western dietary patterns, New Nordic diet, dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH diet) and the Mediterranean style diet. Evidence for vitamin D, calcium, selenium, folic acid, B12 and multivitamins/minerals is looked at. The authors have summarised their conclusions in a table. However, it is emphasised that dietary recommendations should be considered in combination with other preventive actions such as a screening policy or pharmacological agents that may be appropriate for high-risk groups.
Abstract
Pre-eclampsia affects 3%-5% of pregnant women worldwide and is associated with a range of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes, including maternal and/or fetal death. It particularly affects those with chronic hypertension, pregestational diabetes mellitus or a family history of pre-eclampsia. Other than early delivery of the fetus, there is no cure for pre-eclampsia. Since diet or dietary supplements may affect the risk, we have carried out an up-to-date, narrative literature review to assess the relationship between nutrition and pre-eclampsia. Several nutrients and dietary factors previously believed to be implicated in the risk of pre-eclampsia have now been shown to have no effect on risk; these include vitamins C and E, magnesium, salt, ω-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (fish oils) and zinc. Body mass index is proportionally correlated with pre-eclampsia risk, therefore women should aim for a healthy pre-pregnancy body weight and avoid excessive gestational and interpregnancy weight gain. The association between the risk and progression of the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia may explain the apparent benefit of dietary modifications resulting from increased consumption of fruits and vegetables (≥400 g/day), plant-based foods and vegetable oils and a limited intake of foods high in fat, sugar and salt. Consuming a high-fibre diet (25-30 g/day) may attenuate dyslipidaemia and reduce blood pressure and inflammation. Other key nutrients that may mitigate the risk include increased calcium intake, a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement and an adequate vitamin D status. For those with a low selenium intake (such as those living in Europe), fish/seafood intake could be increased to improve selenium intake or selenium could be supplemented in the recommended multivitamin/mineral supplement. Milk-based probiotics have also been found to be beneficial in pregnant women at risk. Our recommendations are summarised in a table of guidance for women at particular risk of developing pre-eclampsia.

Vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency is a global epidemic, estimated to affect over one billion people worldwide, including children. The main function of vitamin D is the regulation of bone homeostasis but it is also involved in many other conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes mellitus and autoimmune disorders. Recent studies show that sufficient levels of vitamin D seem to be necessary to maintain sleep and low vitamin D levels have been associated with shorter sleep duration. This systematic review is the first to assess the association between Vitamin D and sleep disorders in children, 14 articles were included. Vitamin D deficiency in children is associated with decreased sleep duration and poorer sleep efficiency, as well as with delayed bedtimes. Children with reduced vitamin D serum levels have a higher risk of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Since vitamin D levels influence sleep duration, sleep duration can also influence vitamin D serum concentration suggesting a bidirectional relationship. Evidence is scarce and so further high-quality prospective cohort studies and well-designed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are needed to determine the effect of vitamin D supplementation in children with sleep disorders.

Summary Review:
Introduction
Vitamin D levels have been associated with improved sleep in adults, but few studies have concentrated on the paediatric population. In order to identify if vitamin D plays a role regulating sleep in children and adolescents the paper reviewed studies, which looked at vitamin D in relation to sleep duration and quality of sleep. This included the following sleep disorders: obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), restless leg syndrome (RLS) and insomnia.
Methods
- A broad systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines and using PubMed and Cochrane databases
- Search identified 748 papers. After exclusions for non-relevance, incorrect age group, or lack of data on sleep, 14 papers were included
- Due to the shortage of papers on this topic none of these papers were excluded, regardless of quality
- The participants in each study varied from 39 to 5289.
Results
The results highlighted:
- Plasma levels of vitamin D affect sleep duration and quality of sleep in children. Data taken from 5 studies
- Vitamin D cord blood levels were correlated to sleep in preschool children. Partly this was due to the mother’s vitamin D level during pregnancy affecting the level of vitamin D available to the foetus. Venous blood vitamin D level was linked to the sleep wake cycle of children. Data taken from 2 studies
- OSA was more likely to develop in children who had low vitamin D levels with a risk of 14.16% compared to a control group of 5.83% (1 study)
- Vitamin D supplementation was found to reduce neuron damage caused by hypoxia (1 study)
- An association exists between parental vitamin D insufficiency and their child’s vitamin D status (1 study). Data taken from 5 studies
- Vitamin D levels in specific diseases, such as coeliac disease (CD) showed a negative correlation with RLS
- For familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) vitamin D deficiency reduced sleep quality (36.5%). Data taken from 2 studies.
Conclusion
Notwithstanding the small number of studies, the review shows vitamin D deficiency, defined as <20 ng/mL, is associated with an increased risk for sleep disorders in children.

- Due to the role vitamin D plays in sleep in children, establishing vitamin D status may be useful for children presenting with sleep disturbances
- Adequate vitamin D levels during pregnancy are important to establish a vitamin D pool in the foetus

Abstract
This review investigates the association between vitamin D and sleep disorders. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient known to play an important role in the growth and bone health of the human body, but it also appears to play a role in sleep. The goal of our review is to examine the association between vitamin D and sleep disorders in children and adolescents. We summarize the evidence about the role and the mechanism of action of vitamin D in children and adolescents with sleep disorders such as insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), restless legs syndrome (RLS), and other sleep disorders. Systematic electronic database searches were conducted using Pubmed and Cochrane Library. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline was followed. The studies that met the established inclusion criteria were analyzed and compared. Results suggest a strict relationship between vitamin D deficiency in children and sleep disorders. There is evidence that vitamin D is implicated in the different neurochemical mechanisms involved in sleep regulation and mainly in the serotonergic and dopaminergic pathways. This might be responsible for the association of vitamin D deficiency and restless sleep, sleep hyperhidrosis, OSA, and RLS.

Individuals with non-communicable diseases (NCD's), i.e. diseases that are not transmitted from person to person, such as diabetes and heart disease, are at a much higher risk of death from Covid-19. But for individuals who contract Covid-19 and survive, there could be considerable implications on the progression of their pre-existing condition. This review study aimed to discuss how the Covid-19 pandemic might impact management and outcomes in individuals with NCD's. The paper outlined that higher Covid-19 death rates in individuals with NCD's, will cause a decline of these diseases within populations. Although there is little peer reviewed research to support this, circumstantial reports are already suggesting lower hospital admissions for stroke and heart attacks. However it should be noted that it is obvious that this paper was written at the start of the pandemic. The paper went on to discuss that the pandemic and subsequent government actions to control the infection will affect individuals with NCD's through reductions in physical activity, social interaction, and vitamin D intake. Changes to medical management, the subsequent possibility of decreased adherence to medications and the halting of much needed research on NCD's in favour of Covid-19 research, will further exacerbate the impact on individuals with pre-existing conditions. Finally, areas upon which the healthcare system and government should be focusing in order to help individuals with NCD's were discussed. Amongst these was the acknowledgement that the public and private healthcare systems have collaborated with success and this should continue and that on-going support through technology such as Telehealth services and patient advocacy associations is a necessity. Clinicians could use this paper to understand how Covid-19 could accelerate disease progression in individuals with NCD’s and that close monitoring is essential. For individuals with NCD’s who do not have Covid-19, close monitoring would still be required to ensure that government strategies to contain the virus do not exacerbate their condition.
Abstract
The early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic have focused on containing SARS-CoV-2 infection and identifying treatment strategies. While controlling this communicable disease is of utmost importance, the long-term effect on individuals with non-communicable diseases (NCD) is significant. Although certain NCDs appear to increase the severity of COVID-19 and mortality risk, SARS-CoV-2 infection in survivors with NCDs may also affect the progression of their pre-existing clinical conditions. Infection containment measures will have substantial short- and long-term consequences; social distancing and quarantine restrictions will reduce physical activity and increase other unhealthy lifestyles, thus increasing NCD risk factors and worsening clinical symptoms. Vitamin D levels might decrease and there might be a rise in mental health disorders. Many countries have made changes to routine management of NCD patients, e.g., cancelling non-urgent outpatient visits, which will have important implications for NCD management, diagnosis of new-onset NCDs, medication adherence, and NCD progression. We may have opportunities to learn from this unprecedented crisis on how to leverage healthcare technologies and improve procedures to optimize healthcare service provision. This article discusses how the COVID-19 outbreak and related infection control measures could hit the most frail individuals, worsening the condition of NCD patients, while further jeopardizing the sustainability of the healthcare systems. We suggest ways to define an integrated strategy that could involve both public institutional entities and the private sector to safeguard frail individuals and mitigate the impact of the outbreak.

Early reports have shown that individuals with diabetes who contract Covid-19 have higher hospital admissions and mortality rates, classing them as a vulnerable group. This review paper aimed to explain why this group of people are vulnerable and what measures could be recommended. The paper outlined that individuals with diabetes have a compromised immune system due to uncontrolled blood sugar levels. In addition to this, individuals with diabetes and Covid-19 may have a higher risk of organ damage due to the effects of the body's immune response combined with the disordered biological processes associated with their pre-existing condition. Conversely, it was discussed that Covid-19 could exacerbate diabetes progression if the Covid-19 virus entered the cells of the pancreas, causing a blood sugar imbalance. As a result, the importance of optimal blood sugar control was outlined. Several medications were addressed and their benefits/disadvantages discussed. Amongst those reviewed were medications such as GLP-1 agonists, which may help with controlling blood sugar levels and may prevent Covid-19 entering the body's own cells, and metformin, which was initially developed as an anti-influenza drug. Finally the paper discussed diabetes specific precautions to avoid contracting Covid-19. Vitamin D supplementation, regular blood sugar checks, lifestyle measures such as exercise and dietary requirements and allowing individuals with diabetes to have large supplies of their medications to avoid leaving the house were discussed. It was concluded that during the Covid-19 pandemic, individuals with diabetes require particular care in order to avoid additional burden on healthcare systems. For those individuals with diabetes who haven’t contracted Covid-19, this paper could be used to recommend any extra precautions to take to avoid contracting this virus.
Abstract
BACKGROUND The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has taken the world by storm. Alongside COVID-19, diabetes is a long-standing global epidemic. The diabetes population has been reported to suffer adverse outcomes if infected by COVID-19. The aim was to summarise information and resources available on diabetes and COVID-19, highlighting special measures that individuals with diabetes need to follow. METHODS A search using keywords "COVID-19" and "Diabetes" was performed using different sources, including PubMed and World Health Organization. RESULTS COVID-19 may enhance complications in individuals with diabetes through an imbalance in angiotension-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) activation pathways leading to an inflammatory response. ACE2 imbalance in the pancreas causes acute β-cell dysfunction and a resultant hyperglycemic state. These individuals may be prone to worsened COVID-19 complications including vasculopathy, coagulopathy as well as psychological stress. Apart from general preventive measures, remaining hydrated, monitoring blood glucose regularly and monitoring ketone bodies in urine if on insulin is essential. All this while concurrently maintaining physical activity and a healthy diet. Different supporting entities are being set up to help this population. CONCLUSION COVID-19 is a top priority. It is important to remember that a substantial proportion of the world's population is affected by other co-morbidities such as diabetes. These require special attention during this pandemic to avoid adding on to the burden of countries' healthcare systems.

Endocrine and metabolic related diseases such as diabetes and obesity may increase the risk of developing severe Covid-19 and as a result these diseases could be severely affected by Covid-19 infection. This very large review paper looked at over 100 studies and outlined the interrelationship between Covid-19 infection and several endocrine diseases. Diabetes, obesity, pituitary-hypothalamic function, thyroid function, Cushing's syndrome and adrenal function were all reviewed. No aim was stated. Data on individuals with obesity and diabetes indicated an increased risk for severe Covid-19 infection, hospitalisation and mortality. Data surrounding pituitary-hypothalamic function, thyroid function, Cushing's syndrome and adrenal function was less abundant, however neurological issues in Covid-19 patients suggested an involvement of the pituitary and hypothalamus. In lieu of sufficient data the author commented on the possible similarities between severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus with the Covid-19 virus. A number of management strategies were discussed such as the use of vitamin D, oxytocin and melatonin, however the authors commented on the lack of data regarding oxytocin and melatonin in Covid-19 patients, but mechanistic data suggested they might be of use. No overall conclusions were drawn on the findings. Clinicians could use this paper to understand how patients with pre-existing endocrine and metabolic conditions may be at a higher risk of more severe Covid-19 and if contracted could exacerbate their pre-existing condition. These patients could require constant monitoring and additional measures to avoid contracting Covid-19. Supplements such as vitamin D, oxytocin or melatonin could be therapeutic, however more data needs to be reviewed.
Abstract
COVID-19 infection has tremendously impacted our daily clinical practice as well as our social living organization. Virtually all organs and biological systems suffer from this new coronavirus infection, either because the virus targets directly specific tissues or because of indirect effects. Endocrine diseases are not an exception and some of endocrine organs are at risk of direct or indirect lesion by COVID-19. Although there is still no evidence of higher predisposition to contract the infection in patients with diabetes and/or obesity, the coexistence of these conditions contributes to a worse prognosis because both conditions confer an impaired immunologic system. Cytokines storm can be amplified by these two latter conditions thereby leading to multisystemic failure and death. Glycaemic control has been demonstrated to be crucial to avoiding long hospital stays, ICU requirement and also prevention of excessive mortality. Endocrine treatment modifications as a consequence of COVID-19 infection are required in a proactive manner, in order to avoid decompensation and eventual hospital admission. This is the case of diabetes and adrenal insufficiency in which prompt increase of insulin dosage and substitutive adrenal steroids through adoption of the sick day's rules should be warranted, as well as easy contact with the health care provider through telematic different modalities. New possible endocrinological targets of COVID-19 have been recently described and warrant a full study in the next future.

In lieu of a vaccine, complementary therapies have a major role to play in the Covid-19 pandemic. This review paper aimed to highlight how lifestyle approaches such as consumption of functional foods and increased physical activity could optimise the immune system in response to viral infections such as respiratory tract infections and Covid-19, and act as a possible adjuvant to vaccination. The paper outlined the role of exercise as being controversial. Although exercise has been shown to activate white blood cells, intense exercise in elite athletes has been linked to higher upper respiratory tract infection rates. It appears that varying intensity and type of exercise may optimise the immune system and have an additive effect to immunisation against viruses like influenza. The authors also stated that having a sedentary lifestyle may impair the immune system and diseases such as obesity and diabetes may increase susceptibility to infections such as Covid-19. The antiviral effect of functional foods was discussed. The paper paid particular attention to olive oil, vitamin D, traditional herbs and roots, coffee and caffeine. The reviewed mechanisms included enhanced gut bacteria profiles and promotion of anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories. The authors also stated that supplementation as well as adequate dietary intake might be of importance against Covid-19, especially in deficient individuals. It was concluded that moderate intensity exercise alongside dietary intake of functional foods, may prevent communicable diseases, such as Covid-19. Clinicians could use this paper to recommend specific functional foods plus moderate exercise, to help prevent viral infections like Covid-19.
Abstract
Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is causing global mortality and lockdown burdens. A compromised immune system is a known risk factor for all viral influenza infections. Functional foods optimize the immune system capacity to prevent and control pathogenic viral infections, while physical activity augments such protective benefits. Exercise enhances innate and adaptive immune systems through acute, transient, and long-term adaptations to physical activity in a dose-response relationship. Functional foods prevention of non-communicable disease can be translated into protecting against respiratory viral infections and COVID-19. Functional foods and nutraceuticals within popular diets contain immune-boosting nutraceuticals, polyphenols, terpenoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, sterols, pigments, unsaturated fatty-acids, micronutrient vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, B6, B12, C, D, E, and folate, and trace elements, including zinc, iron, selenium, magnesium, and copper. Foods with antiviral properties include fruits, vegetables, fermented foods and probiotics, olive oil, fish, nuts and seeds, herbs, roots, fungi, amino acids, peptides, and cyclotides. Regular moderate exercise may contribute to reduce viral risk and enhance sleep quality during quarantine, in combination with appropriate dietary habits and functional foods. Lifestyle and appropriate nutrition with functional compounds may offer further antiviral approaches for public health.

Animal studies have highlighted the importance of vitamin D in heart functioning and human studies have indicated that deficiencies in vitamin D are associated with disorders of the heart. This has led to the belief that vitamin D may have a role in protection against heart disease, however studies on this have failed to show a relationship. This review paper aimed to highlight the role of vitamin D in heart disease and to understand why associations have not been shown in trials. The paper highlighted how vitamin D derives from cholesterol and is regulated by a number of things including calcium. Vitamin D receptors are evident in heart tissues, however the reason for vitamin D in these tissues is unclear. The role of vitamin D in high blood pressure, the build-up of fat in heart arteries and heart failure were all reviewed, and it appears that data is conflicting in all conditions. It was concluded that there is strong evidence for a protective role of vitamin D in heart disease, but only from animal studies and randomised control trials with vitamin D supplements in humans, do not show any benefit. Issues with ethics and biological processes may be the reason that human studies have failed to show any associations. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to better understand the possible role of vitamin D in heart disease.
Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency, affecting almost one billion people worldwide. Vitamin D is mostly known for its role in intestinal calcium absorption and bone mineralization. However, the observation of seasonal changes in blood pressure and the subsequent identification of vitamin D receptor (VDR) and 1α-hydroxylase in cardiomyocytes, as well as endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells, implicated a role of vitamin D in the cardiovascular system. Animal studies provided compelling evidence that vitamin D signaling is essential for cardiovascular integrity, especially for the regulation of vascular tone and as an antifibrotic and antihypertrophic signaling pathway in the heart. In addition, observational studies reported an association between vitamin D deficiency and risk of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and heart failure. However, recent clinical intervention studies failed to prove the causal relationship between vitamin D supplementation and beneficial effects on cardiovascular health. In this review, we aim to highlight our current understanding of the role of vitamin D in the cardiovascular system and to find potential explanations for the large discrepancies between the outcome of experimental studies and clinical intervention trials.

Abstract
The world is in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic. Public health measures that can reduce the risk of infection and death in addition to quarantines are desperately needed. This article reviews the roles of vitamin D in reducing the risk of respiratory tract infections, knowledge about the epidemiology of influenza and COVID-19, and how vitamin D supplementation might be a useful measure to reduce risk. Through several mechanisms, vitamin D can reduce risk of infections. Those mechanisms include inducing cathelicidins and defensins that can lower viral replication rates and reducing concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines that produce the inflammation that injures the lining of the lungs, leading to pneumonia, as well as increasing concentrations of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Several observational studies and clinical trials reported that vitamin D supplementation reduced the risk of influenza, whereas others did not. Evidence supporting the role of vitamin D in reducing risk of COVID-19 includes that the outbreak occurred in winter, a time when 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations are lowest; that the number of cases in the Southern Hemisphere near the end of summer are low; that vitamin D deficiency has been found to contribute to acute respiratory distress syndrome; and that case-fatality rates increase with age and with chronic disease comorbidity, both of which are associated with lower 25(OH)D concentration. To reduce the risk of infection, it is recommended that people at risk of influenza and/or COVID-19 consider taking 10,000 IU/d of vitamin D3 for a few weeks to rapidly raise 25(OH)D concentrations, followed by 5000 IU/d. The goal should be to raise 25(OH)D concentrations above 40-60 ng/mL (100-150 nmol/L). For treatment of people who become infected with COVID-19, higher vitamin D3 doses might be useful. Randomized controlled trials and large population studies should be conducted to evaluate these recommendations.

With the continuing spread of COVID-19 and lack of any approved treatments, this paper examines possible strategies for prevention. The data emerging so far highlights that individual health status plays a critical role in determining clinical severity of COVID-19 symptoms ranging from asymptomatic, mild, moderate, to death. Metabolic status, as determined by a patient’s diet, nutrition, age, sex, medical conditions, lifestyle, and environmental factors can therefore be considered preventative strategies to improve the severity of COVID-19 outcomes. Social distancing and personal hygiene are stated as the most effective strategies to prevent or slow spread of the disease. However individual health status, age and the presence of pre-existing comorbidities influences outcomes, as shown by global data highlighting a prevalence in older, males with metabolic conditions; hypertension in 23.7% patients and diabetes in 16.2% of patients. Older males appear more prone to infectious diseases with high pro-inflammatory immune responses and low adaptive immune responses than an older woman. Diet and healthy intestinal and respiratory tract microbiota may also influence immune system competence. Numerous micronutrients are essential for immunocompetence, particularly vitamin A, C, D, E, Bs, iron, selenium, and zinc. A balanced diet, high in colourful fruits and vegetables with a variation of prebiotic fibres, probiotics, and plant polyphenols and phytonutrients, help promote a healthy, diverse microbiota. Oral probiotics may also be beneficial to vulnerable individuals. Vitamin D supplementation is also proving helpful in prevention of acute respiratory tract infections. Other lifestyle factors such as smoking and exposure to environmental toxins should also be considered. Together these preventative measures may reduce personal risk of getting the disease.
Abstract
It is an ugly fact that a significant amount of the world's population will contract SARS-CoV-II infection with the current spreading. While a specific treatment is not yet coming soon, individual risk assessment and management strategies are crucial. The individual preventive and protective measures drive the personal risk of getting the disease. Among the virus-contracted hosts, their different metabolic status, as determined by their diet, nutrition, age, sex, medical conditions, lifestyle, and environmental factors, govern the personal fate toward different clinical severity of COVID-19, from asymptomatic, mild, moderate, to death. The careful individual assessment for the possible dietary, nutritional, medical, lifestyle, and environmental risks, together with the proper relevant risk management strategies, is the sensible way to deal with the pandemic of SARS-CoV-II.
