The causes of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are complex and not fully understood, yet the occurrence of migraine has been linked with this disease. As they have an association, therapies used for either disorder may have a direct impact on both. Food sensitivities have been shown to affect both migraines and IBS and the elimination of foods may be of benefit to both disorders. This randomised cross-over trial of 60 individuals with migraine and IBS assessed immune reactions to certain foods and aimed to determine the effect of eliminating these foods and the addition of probiotics on individuals with IBS and migraine. The results showed that after 14 weeks of treatment, only elimination diet combined with probiotics improved migraine and IBS symptoms, resulting in a decrease in the use of medications. Individuals treated with elimination diet or probiotics only did show an improvement in comparison to the start of the trial, however not when compared to the combination treatment It was concluded that elimination diet in combination with probiotics may be of benefit to relieve symptoms of migraine and IBS. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand possible causes of IBS and migraines, and that treatments may involve targeting both illnesses.
Abstract
Several research studies have revealed that migraine has a solid link with gastrointestinal diseases especially irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This study was carried out to investigate therapeutic potential of diet based on IgG elimination combined with probiotics on migraine plus irritable bowel syndrome. A total of 60 patients diagnosed with migraine plus IBS were recruited for the study. IgG antibodies against 266 food varieties were detected by ELISA. Then, the subjects were randomized into three groups for treatment of IgG elimination diet or probiotics or diet combined with probiotics. Migraine symptom, gut function score, medication use, and serum serotonin level were measured at baseline, 7 weeks, and 14 weeks. Improvement of migraine and gut symptom was achieved at a certain time point. Reduced use of over-the-counter- (OTC-) analgesics was seen in all groups. However, use of triptans did not show significant difference. An increased serum serotonin level was seen in subjects treated with elimination diet and elimination diet combined with probiotics. IgG elimination diet combined with probiotics may be beneficial to migraine plus IBS. It may provide new insight by understanding the intricate relationship between migraine and gastrointestinal diseases.

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is estimated to affect 30 million individuals globally, with projections as high as 150 million by 2050 if no effective treatment is found. This report describes a personalised, multi-modal, therapeutic programme used with 10 individuals with various degrees of cognitive decline. The goal was to optimise metabolic parameters and lifestyle factors and was personalised based on laboratory test results. 9 out of 10 of the case study patients experienced improvement in cognitive abilities, beginning within 3-6 months of starting the programme. These effects were sustained at 2.5 year follow up. The 1 patient who did not benefit had advanced AD, in comparison to the other patients with subjective or mild cognitive decline. The authors call for a more extensive trial of the therapeutic programme.
Abstract
This report describes a novel, comprehensive, and personalized therapeutic program that is based on the underlying pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, and which involves multiple modalities designed to achieve metabolic enhancement for neurodegeneration (MEND). The first 10 patients who have utilized this program include patients with memory loss associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), or subjective cognitive impairment (SCI). Nine of the 10 displayed subjective or objective improvement in cognition beginning within 3-6 months, with the one failure being a patient with very late stage AD. Six of the patients had had to discontinue working or were struggling with their jobs at the time of presentation, and all were able to return to work or continue working with improved performance. Improvements have been sustained, and at this time the longest patient follow-up is two and one-half years from initial treatment, with sustained and marked improvement. These results suggest that a larger, more extensive trial of this therapeutic program is warranted. The results also suggest that, at least early in the course, cognitive decline may be driven in large part by metabolic processes. Furthermore, given the failure of monotherapeutics in AD to date, the results raise the possibility that such a therapeutic system may be useful as a platform on which drugs that would fail as monotherapeutics may succeed as key components of a therapeutic system.

In experimental animals, prolonged lysine inadequacy increases stress-induced anxiety, however the evidence of nutritional benefits for fortifying wheat with lysine is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate whether consuming lysine-fortified wheat for three months would reduce stress and anxiety in Northwest Syrian rural communities. This study indicated that lysine fortification significantly reduced anxiety in males. Abstract
Lysine is a limiting amino acid in diets based on wheat as the staple. In experimental animals, prolonged dietary lysine inadequacy increases stress-induced anxiety. If observed in humans, such a result would have a strong implication for the relationship between nutrition and communal quality of life and mental health. As part of a 3-month randomized double-blind study, we tested whether lysine fortification of wheat reduces anxiety and stress response in family members in poor Syrian communities consuming wheat as a staple food. In the lysine-fortified group, the plasma cortisol response to the blood drawing as a cause of stress was reduced in females, as was sympathetic arousal in males as measured by skin conductance. Lysine fortification also significantly reduced chronic anxiety as measured by the trait anxiety inventory in males. These results suggest that some stress responses in economically weak populations consuming cereal-based diets can be improved with lysine fortification.

The effective functioning of the central nervous system depends in part on an adequate and constant nutrient supply. Modification of nutrition may be important to the maintenance of cognitive function and mood across a person's life. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of folate, B-12 and B-6 vitamin supplementation and dietary intake on cognition and mood in healthy women from three different age groups. A randomised double-blind placebo-controlled design was used. The eligible participants had to be healthy women who did not smoke, who were not pregnant or lactating, or taking any medication that may affect the mental performance or mood. Two hundred-eleven females from three age bands were recruited for the study, who were randomly allocated to one of four supplement treatment conditions. Results show that there were few effects of short term B-vitamin supplementation on cognitive performance, and there was no effect on mood. The effects of supplementation were mainly seen for memory performance, where folate intake was generally positively associated with performance whereas vitamin B-12 and B-6 intake, was positively associated with memory performance. The study found that over a longer time frame, there may be associations between the usual dietary intake of B-vitamins and cognitive performance especially for younger women.
Abstract
Based on research demonstrating associations between folate, B-12 and B-6 vitamins and cognition and mood, we investigated the effects of short-term supplementation in 211 healthy younger, middle-aged and older women who took either 750 microg of folate, 15 microg of vitamin B-12, 75 mg of vitamin B-6 or a placebo daily for 35 d. In addition, we examined associations between dietary intake of these vitamins and cognition and mood. Usual dietary intake status was estimated using a retrospective, self-report, quantified food frequency questionnaire. Participants completed alternate forms of standardized tests of cognitive processing resources, memory, executive function, verbal ability and self-report mood measures before and after supplementation. Supplementation had a significant positive effect on some measures of memory performance only, and no effect on mood. Dietary intake status was associated with speed of processing, recall and recognition and verbal ability.
