Diet has been identified as one of the important modifiable lifestyle factors in preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Carotenoids are potent antioxidants, naturally occurring pigments found in red, yellow, orange and dark green fruits and vegetables. Literature from epidemiological studies links fruit and vegetable consumption, and higher levels of carotenoids, with a lower risk of cognitive decline among older adults from different regions. The aim of this study was to examine (1) the association between dietary intakes of carotenoids and global/domain-specific cognition, and (2) how participants’ dietary patterns corresponded to their plasma levels of carotenoids. This study is an evaluation of baseline blood nutrients and cognition among the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) participants. Participants are predominantly Caucasian females with a mean age of 69⋅8 years. Results show that high levels of plasma α-carotene were associated with higher scores for global cognition, and episodic and semantic memory. The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin (combined) were positively associated with better scores for semantic memory. A dietary pattern that featured greater consumption of vegetables other than green leafy vegetables and fruits, corresponded to high α-carotene in blood which was associated with higher cognition scores. Authors conclude that blood nutrient levels as objective markers could characterise individuals’ dietary patterns, which could facilitate a targeted dietary intervention to prevent cognitive decline.
Abstract
There is emerging evidence linking fruit and vegetable consumption and cognitive function. However, studies focusing on the nutrients underlying this relationship are lacking. We aim to examine the association between plasma nutrients and cognition in a population at risk for cognitive decline with a suboptimal diet. The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) trial is a randomized controlled intervention that examines the effects of the MIND diet to prevent cognitive decline. The primary outcome is global cognition. A multivariate linear model was used to investigate the association between blood nutrients and global and/or domain-specific cognition. The model was adjusted for age, sex, education, study site, smoking status, cognitive activities and physical activities. High plasma α-carotene was associated with better global cognition. Participants in the highest tertile of plasma α-carotene had a higher global cognition z score of 0⋅17 when compared with individuals in the lowest tertile (P 0⋅002). Circulating α-carotene levels were also associated with higher semantic memory scores (P for trend 0⋅007). Lutein and zeaxanthin (combined) was positively associated with higher semantic memory scores (P for trend 0⋅009). Our study demonstrated that higher α-carotene levels in blood were associated with higher global cognition scores in a US population at risk for cognitive decline. The higher α-carotene levels in blood reflected greater intakes of fruits, other types of vegetables and lesser intakes of butter and margarine and meat. The higher circulating levels of lutein plus zeaxanthin reflected a dietary pattern with high intakes of fruits, green leafy, other vegetables and cheese, and low consumption of fried foods. Objective nutrient markers in the blood can better characterize dietary intake, which may facilitate the implementation of a tailored dietary intervention for the prevention of cognitive decline.

Bioactive phytochemicals are continually being studied for their role in cancer prevention with increasing evidence for flavonoids, carotenoids, phenolic acids, and organosulfur compounds (found in cruciferous vegetables). This 2018 review explores the protective effects of a broad spectrum of plant-derived substances. In total, more than 5000 individual phytochemicals have been identified in plant-derived foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and grains. These bioactive compounds have been shown to have antitumor activity, reduce inflammation, induce apoptosis (cell death), inhibit the proliferation of aggressive tumour cells, and impact on metastasis (migration of cancer cells). Specifically, in breast cancer, a few studies have examined phytochemicals on cancer stem cells (the originating tumour cells) and found that curcumin, genistein, indol-3-carbinol, c-phycocyanin, resveratrol, and quercetin downregulated their activity. Systematic reviews of dietary patterns and breast cancer show vegetables, and especially fibre, to be consistently protective against reduced risk of mammary carcinogenesis. Dietary polyphenols are considered a cost-effective approach to cancer care however there is still a lack of evidence due to the complex nature of combined phytochemicals versus isolated agents. Wholefood consumption is considered to improve bioavailability compared to supplementation however phytochemicals are a low-dose component of foods. There is also concern that some phytochemicals may act as carcinogens or tumour promoters (for example, beta-carotene). More clinical trials are required to fully understand phytochemicals and breast cancer care.
Abstract
Cancerous tissue transformation developing usually over years or even decades of life is a highly complex process involving strong stressors damaging DNA, chronic inflammation, comprehensive interaction between relevant molecular pathways, and cellular cross-talk within the neighboring tissues. Only the minor part of all cancer cases are caused by inborn predisposition; the absolute majority carry a sporadic character based on modifiable risk factors which play a central role in cancer prevention. Amongst most promising candidates for dietary supplements are bioactive phytochemicals demonstrating strong anticancer effects. Abundant evidence has been collected for beneficial effects of flavonoids, carotenoids, phenolic acids, and organosulfur compounds affecting a number of cancer-related pathways. Phytochemicals may positively affect processes of cell signaling, cell cycle regulation, oxidative stress response, and inflammation. They can modulate non-coding RNAs, upregulate tumor suppressive miRNAs, and downregulate oncogenic miRNAs that synergically inhibits cancer cell growth and cancer stem cell self-renewal. Potential clinical utility of the phytochemicals is discussed providing examples for chemoprevention against and therapy for human breast cancer. Expert recommendations are provided in the context of preventive medicine.

Diets high in vegetables are linked with a lower incidence of chronic disease. Some vegetables may have much larger health benefits in comparison to others, and therefore dietary guidelines could be developed to include targeted advice on consuming specific types of vegetables with the greatest health benefits. This review of observational studies focused on the cardiovascular health benefits of specific vegetable types. Vegetables discussed in this review were grouped into the following types: leafy green, cruciferous, alliums, yellow-orange-red and legumes. These vegetables contain many nutrients and phytochemicals that have been proposed to have benefits for cardiovascular health. The authors looked at the results from nearly 100 observational studies. Most of the studies were carried out on older adults; some were focussed on a single gender (male or female), and some were mixed. Follow up periods in the studies ranged from 3 years to 28 years. Most of the studies relied on food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) to estimate vegetable consumption, and many did not define the size of a vegetable portion in grams. The percentage of studies demonstrating significant benefits of vegetable consumption on CVD ranged from 25% for legumes to 43% for leafy greens. The strongest beneficial effects on CVD risk were seen for leafy green and cruciferous vegetables. The authors concluded that the evidence in this review suggests intake of leafy green and cruciferous vegetables may confer strong cardiovascular health benefits. Increasing vegetable intake, with a focus on leafy green and cruciferous vegetables may provide the greatest benefits.

Abstract
Adequate vegetable consumption is one of the cornerstones of a healthy diet. The recommendation to increase vegetable intake is part of most dietary guidelines. Despite widespread and long-running public health messages to increase vegetable intake, similar to other countries worldwide, less than 1 in 10 adult Australians manage to meet target advice. Dietary guidelines are predominantly based on studies linking diets high in vegetables with lower risk of chronic diseases. Identifying vegetables with the strongest health benefits and incorporating these into dietary recommendations may enhance public health initiatives around vegetable intake. These enhanced public health initiatives would be targeted at reducing the risk of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Specific vegetable types contain high levels of particular nutrients and phytochemicals linked with cardiovascular health benefits. However, it is not clear if increasing intake of these specific vegetable types will result in larger benefits on risk of chronic diseases. This review presents an overview of the evidence for the relationships of specific types of vegetables, including leafy green, cruciferous, allium, yellow-orange-red and legumes, with subclinical and clinical CVD outcomes in observational epidemiological studies.

For two weeks, participants either followed their usual diet, received text message reminders to eat more fruit and vegetables and a voucher to purchase fruit and vegetables, or were given two additional portions of fruit and vegetables per day. Participants were asked to record their mood throughout the study. Blood samples were tested for vitamin levels before and after the study. Only participants given the extra fruit and vegetables showed improvements to their psychological well-being, with increases in vitality, flourishing, and motivation across the 14 days relative to the other groups. No changes were found for depressive symptoms, anxiety, or mood. Improvements did not appear to be related to changes in blood vitamin levels. The authors concluded that giving young adults fresh fruit and vegetables to eat can have psychological benefits even over a brief period of time.
Abstract
This study tested the psychological benefits of a 14-day preregistered clinical intervention to increase fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption in 171 low-FV-consuming young adults (67% female, aged 18-25). Participants were randomly assigned into a diet-as-usual control condition, an ecological momentary intervention (EMI) condition involving text message reminders to increase their FV consumption plus a voucher to purchase FV, or a fruit and vegetable intervention (FVI) condition in which participants were given two additional daily servings of fresh FV to consume on top of their normal diet. Self-report outcome measures were depressive symptoms and anxiety measured pre- and post-intervention, and daily negative and positive mood, vitality, flourishing, and flourishing behaviors (curiosity, creativity, motivation) assessed nightly using a smartphone survey. Vitamin C and carotenoids were measured from blood samples pre- and post-intervention, and psychological expectancies about the benefits of FV were measured post-intervention to test as mediators of psychological change. Only participants in the FVI condition showed improvements to their psychological well-being with increases in vitality, flourishing, and motivation across the 14-days relative to the other groups. No changes were found for depressive symptoms, anxiety, or mood. Intervention benefits were not mediated by vitamin C, carotenoids, or psychological expectancies. We conclude that providing young adults with high-quality FV, rather than reminding them to eat more FV (with a voucher to purchase FV), resulted in significant short-term improvements to their psychological well-being. These results provide initial proof-of-concept that giving young adults fresh fruit and vegetables to eat can have psychological benefits even over a brief period of time.
