Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide. Coffee is a good source of polyphenolic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds such as caffeine, cafestol, kahweol, and chlorogenic acids. This review included one hundred and five cohort studies and meta-analyses to evaluate the relationship between coffee consumption and cancer of the breast, liver, oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, colorectum, kidney, bladder, prostate, and ovaries. The results of this review found an inverse association between coffee consumption and reduced risk of hepatocellular cancer. A slight risk reduction is observed against breast cancer in postmenopausal women. This review found no considerable association between coffee consumption and decreased cancer risk in other organs. Further robust studies are required to investigate the benefits of coffee consumption on cancer risk reduction due to the high heterogeneity of included studies. However, healthcare professionals can use the results of this study to understand the benefits of coffee consumption.
Abstract
A significant number of studies suggest that coffee consumption reduces cancer risk. This beneficial effect is usually ascribed to the presence of polyphenolic antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, including caffeine, cafestol, kahweol, and chlorogenic acids. To summarize recent literature on this subject, we performed a bibliographic search in PubMed and Embase over the period January 2005 to December 2020 to identify cohort studies and meta-analysis (with data collection ensuring quality of selected reports) that could provide quantitative data on the relationship between coffee consumption and common cancers. The totality of eligible scientific articles supports the evidence that coffee intake is inversely associated with risk of hepatocellular cancer and, to a slight extent, risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women. As to the association with other organs, including the esophagus, pancreas, colorectum, kidneys, bladder, ovaries, and prostate, the results are less clear as reports reveal conflicting results or statistically nonsignificant data. Therefore, this overview does not provide broad-based conclusions. Important uncertainties include general study design, inhomogeneous patient sampling, different statistical analysis (deliberate), misreporting of socioeconomic status, education, coffee-brewing methods, consumption of caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee, smoking habits, and alcohol intake. Clearly, more epidemiologic research needs to be conducted before solid science-based recommendations can be made with regard to coffee consumption.

Results show that the International Prostate Symptom Score of the diabetic BPH group was significantly higher than that of the non-diabetic BPH group, indicating that diabetes mellitus may aggravate the LUTS of BPH patients. Authors conclude that LUTS in BPH patients is increased in patients with diabetes mellitus compared with controls.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a disease that causes lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), which are the most common urological problem in approximately one-third of the male population aged over 50 years. Some studies have suggested that diabetes may be a risk factor for the development of BPH. However, whether diabetes aggravates the LUTS of BPH patients is still controversial. AIM: To investigate the impact of diabetes mellitus on LUTS in BPH patients. METHODS A literature search was conducted using Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure literature databases. This meta-analysis was registered in PROSPERO (registration number: CRD 42020200794). Fixed- or random-effects models were used for analysis according to heterogeneity. The results of the systematic analysis are presented as weighted mean difference (WMD) with the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS In total, 1308 studies were retrieved from databases and 18 articles comprising 1685 cases and 4653 controls were selected for meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) value and prostate volume of BPH patients with diabetes was significantly higher than that of BPH patients without diabetes. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review is the first to evaluate the impact of diabetes mellitus on LUTS in BPH patients. The results of our meta-analysis support the hypothesis that LUTS in BPH patients is increased in patients with diabetes mellitus compared with controls, which suggests that physicians should pay more attention to BPH patients with diabetes mellitus. COVID-19 is a disease that is associated with extremely high inflammation within the body, because of the body’s immune system trying to fight the infection. Conventional treatments focus on decreasing the immune response and controlling the disease; however, no treatment strategy has been shown to be effective. Traditional Persian Medicine (TPM) focuses on a holistic approach to the prevention and treatment of disease. Cinnamon has been thought as a TPM, which may be effective in the treatment of COVID-19 and this systematic review aimed to analyse the data behind these claims. Cinnamon was found to have anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. Anti-viral effects were shown in cells against several viruses including the virus responsible for COVID-19. Cinnamon was shown to have extensive anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in various cells, however no specific research was found on COVID-19. It was concluded that as cinnamon has the potential to target different aspects of COVID-19 it could be used as an effective therapy. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand that cinnamon may have therapeutic effects in COVID-19, however clinical trials need to be performed before specific recommendations are made.
Abstract
The COVID-19 global epidemic caused by coronavirus has affected the health and other aspects of life for more than one year. Despite the current pharmacotherapies, there is still no specific treatment, and studies are in progress to find a proper therapy with high efficacy and low side effects. In this way, Traditional Persian Medicine (TPM), due to its holistic view, can provide recommendations for the prevention and treatment of new diseases such as COVID-19. The muco-obstruction of the airway, which occurs in SARS-CoV-2, has similar features in TPM textbooks that can lead us to new treatment approaches. Based on TPM and pharmacological studies, Cinnamomum verum (Darchini)'s potential effective functions can contribute to SARS-CoV-2 infection treatment and has been known to be effective in corona disease in Public beliefs. From the viewpoint of TPM theories, Cinnamon can be effective in SARS-CoV-2 improvement and treatment through its anti-obstructive, diuretic, tonic and antidote effects. In addition, there is pharmacological evidence on anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, organ-o-protective and anti-depression effects of Cinnamon that are in line with the therapeutic functions mentioned in TPM.Overall, Cinnamon and its ingredients can be recommended for SARS-CoV2 management due to multi-targeting therapies. This review provides basic information for future studies on this drug's effectiveness in preventing and treating COVID-19 and similar diseases.

Cinnamon is a common spice that contains manganese, iron, dietary fibre, calcium, their derivatives, and other related compounds. Despite the several clinical benefits afforded by cinnamon, concerns about its safety persist. The aim of this study was to elucidate the safety of cinnamon which may facilitate a better understanding of the side effects of cinnamon among healthcare workers and policy makers. This study is an umbrella review of four systematic reviews and meta-analysis. Results show that there was no significant difference in adverse events between cinnamon and placebo. Furthermore, it has benefits in the treatment of a variety of diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and cancer. Authors conclude that cinnamon can be used as an adjunctive compound in clinical practice and appears safe in terms of side effects.
Abstract
Purpose: Many evidence-based studies have indicated that cinnamon has therapeutic effects. However, it may not be entirely safe and its adverse effects may be ignored. The present umbrella review was conducted to elucidate the safety of cinnamon. Methods: Pertinent meta-analyses and systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials on cinnamon use in humans were identified by searching PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from their inception to September 15, 2021. All meta-analyses and systematic reviews on the safety or adverse effects of cinnamon were considered. PRISMA 2020 was used as the standard of reporting (PRISMA registration ID: 286746). Results: We identified three meta-analyses and one systematic review that described the safety of cinnamon. The quality of the meta-analysis and systematic reviews was evaluated using "Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews." Their quality was rated as low in two (50%) instances and moderate in two (50%). There were no significant toxic- or side effects between cinnamon group and placebo group regardless of dose and duration. Conclusion: There is evidence to support that the use of cinnamon has no adverse reactions. It can improve the health status of patients as an adjuvant treatment. Future studies exploring better profile risks and protective factors for cinnamon use-related adverse effect are needed, in order that preventive approaches can be developed.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is known to be the most prevalent hepatic disorder that is characterised by the accumulation of lipids within the hepatocytes exceeding 5% of the liver weight in the absence of excessive alcohol intake and secondary causes of liver diseases. Currently, the primary treatment for NAFLD is weight loss by lifestyle therapy involving diet and exercise. The aim of this study was to summarise the available evidence of randomised controlled trials to establish the effect of cinnamon supplementation on changes in liver enzymes among adults. This study is a meta-analysis of seven randomised controlled trials with nine treatment arms. In total, 266 participants were enrolled in selected articles, of which 133 individuals allocated to cinnamon supplementation group and 133 subjects to the control group. Results show that cinnamon cannot effectively reduce the liver enzymes - aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase levels. However, subgroup analyses showed that the effect of cinnamon supplementation on ALT levels was significant at dosages of <1500 mg/day, in trials lasting >12 weeks and in trials conducted of both genders. Authors conclude that due to limited availability of studies with NAFLD participants and relatively small sample sizes, well designed trials with adequate sample sizes aimed at NAFLD patients are recommended.
Abstract
AIMS: The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to examine the effect of cinnamon supplementation on liver enzymes. METHODS A systematic search was performed in electronic databases including PubMed-Medline, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science up to November 2020. We used a random effects model to estimate pooled effect size of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels. RESULTS Seven RCTs (9 treatment arms) fulfilled the eligibility criteria of the present meta-analysis. Overall, meta-analysis could not show any beneficial effect of cinnamon supplementation on AST, ALT, and ALP. Subgroup analyses showed that the effect of cinnamon supplementation on ALT was significant at the dosages of <1500 mg/day (Hedges's: -0.61; 95 % CI: -1.11, -0.10; P = 0.002), in trials lasting>12 weeks (Hedges's: -0.83; 95 % CI: -1.36, -0.30; P = 0.01), and in trials conducted of both gender (Hedges's: -0.72; 95 % CI: -1.45, -0.01; P = 0.04). CONCLUSION In summary, cinnamon supplementation had no significant effect on liver enzymes in adults. However, the effect of cinnamon on ALT levels was significant at the dosages of <1500 mg/day, in trials lasting>12 weeks, and in trials conducted of both gender. Nevertheless, further studies should be performed to confirm our results.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age. PCOS is associated with blood sugar imbalances, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. Herbal treatments are increasing, and cinnamon has been shown to act on blood sugar, which may be of benefit to individuals with PCOS. This systematic review and meta-analysis of 9 studies aimed to determine the effect of cinnamon on PCOS. The results showed that in women with PCOS, measures of blood sugar balance and fats in the blood were improved following cinnamon supplementation. Cinnamon also improved ovarian function. It was concluded that cinnamon may aid blood sugar control and blood lipids in women with PCOS. It may also improve ovarian function, however more research is needed to ensure clinical outcomes.
Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine diseases in the women at their reproductive age. Nowadays, the use of herbal compounds for lesser side effects, as compared to drug treatments, has become popular for the prevention and reduction of the complications of this disease. Evidence suggests that cinnamon, given its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, can be associated with reduced metabolic complications from chronic non-communicable diseases. This systematic review aimed to determine the potential effect of cinnamon on the metabolic status in the PCOS. PICO framework for current systematic review was Population (P): subjects with PCOS; Intervention (I): oral cinnamon supplement; Comparison (C): the group as control or administered placebo; and Outcome (O): changed inflammatory, oxidative stress, lipid profile, glycemic, hormonal and anthropometric parameters and ovarian function. PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, ProQuest and Google Scholar were searched from their very inception until January, 2020, considering specific keywords to explore the related studies. Out of 266 studies retrieved by the search strategy, only nine were eligible for evaluation. All clinical trials, animal studies, and published English-language journal studies were eligible for this review. The results showed that increased high-density lipoprotein and insulin sensitivity were increased by the cinnamon supplementation while low-density lipoprotein, triglyceride, and blood glucose were decreased in patients with PCOS. However, the results related to the potential effects of cinnamon on body weight and body mass index were inconsistent, thus calling for further studies. Also, despite improved results regarding the effect of cinnamon on oxidative stress and ovarian function, further studies are required to explore the precise mechanisms. Overall, the effects of cinnamon on the improvement of metabolic status in PCOS were promising. However, to observe clinical changes following cinnamon supplementation in PCOS, more clinical trials with higher doses of cinnamon and a longer duration of intervention are needed.

Adequate sleep is crucial to health. Yet, sleep disturbances have become very common in modern societies. A lack of sleep is linked to increased risk for several chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, appetite-regulating hormones can be disrupted by sleep shortages, which is thought to drive chronic overeating, leading to weight gain, obesity and its associated health consequences. This review examined the relationship between sleep duration and food consumption and energy intake, whilst also monitoring changes in body weight and appetite-regulating hormones. The review encompassed 50 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with 3387 participants, including 1079 children and adolescents and 2308 adults. The findings suggested that sleep shortages contribute to significant increases in calorie intake, fat intake, increased body weight, appetite, hunger, more frequent eating and bigger portion sizes. In this review lack of sleep did not change protein and carbohydrate intake. Nor did lack of sleep make people exert more or less energy overall, however, a variance amongst ethnic groups was observed here. There was not enough evidence for changes in metabolic rate, so the review assumed no significant effect. When viewed collectively, the appetite-regulating hormones of leptin and ghrelin, the stress hormone cortisol and the sugar-regulating hormone insulin were not significantly influenced by sleep duration. However, there seemed to be a wide variance of outcomes when looking at individual studies' results. In conclusion, the authors reiterated the importance of sleep for health maintenance, advocating for a minimum of 7 hours of sleep per day for adults and that, despite busy modern lifestyles, sleep optimisation strategies should be prioritised. Less than 6 hours of sleep per day increases the risk of health consequences, like weight gain and metabolic disorders and sleep management should be considered part of their treatment protocols.

Introduction
Short sleep duration and disruptions to circadian rhythm have been associated with being overweight and obese. It has been suggested that sleep restriction may interfere with appetite regulating hormones leading to increased appetite and disrupted energy balance.
This study aimed to systematically review studies exploring the relationship between sleep duration and food consumption, energy intake, anthropometric characteristics and appetite-regulating hormones.

This systematic review included 50 randomised controlled trials including 3,387 participants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Sleep, as well as diet and physical activity, plays a significant role in growth, maturation, health, and regulation of energy homeostasis. Recently, there is increasing evidence indicating a possible causal association between sleep duration and energy balance. We aimed to examine the relationship between sleep duration and food consumption, energy intake, anthropometric characteristics, and appetite-regulating hormones by randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS Electronic literature searches were conducted on Medline, Web of Science, and Google Scholar until July 2020. The search was conducted with the following words: "Sleep Duration", "Circadian Rhythm", "Sleep Disorders" in combination with "Obesity", "Overweight", "Abdominal Obesity", "Physical Activity", "Energy Intake", "Body Mass Index", "Lipid Metabolism", "Caloric Restriction", Leptin, "Weight Gain", and "Appetite Regulation" using human studies.methods RESULTS After screening 708 abstracts, 50 RCTs (7 on children or adolescents and 43 on adults) were identified and met the inclusion criteria. In general, the findings suggested that sleep restriction may leads to a significant increment in energy intake, fat intake, body weight, appetite, hunger, eating occasions, and portion size, while protein and carbohydrate consumption, total energy expenditure, and respiratory quotient remained unaffected as a result of sleep restriction. Serum leptin, ghrelin, and cortisol concentrations were not influenced by sleep duration as well. CONCLUSION Insufficient sleep can be considered as a contributing factor for energy imbalance, weight gain, and metabolic disorders and it is suggested that to tackle disordered eating it may be necessary to pay more attention to sleep duration.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a series of liver diseases caused by long-term heavy drinking. Lipid metabolism disorder often occurs in people with alcoholic liver injury. Treatment is mainly a combination of alcohol abstinence, improving nutrition, treating the liver injury, and preventing or reversing the progress of liver fibrosis or promoting liver regeneration. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus casei on lipid metabolism and intestinal microflora in patients with alcoholic liver injury. This study was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. A total of 181 ALD patients were recruited and randomly assigned to one of the three groups; low-dose group, high-dose group and positive control group (+ there was another group of 20 healthy people which served as normal control group). Results showed disorder of lipid metabolism, intestinal flora imbalance and inflammation in patients with alcoholic liver injury. Furthermore, after supplementation of Lactobacillus casei, there was a significant increase in the amount of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Authors conclude that Lactobacillus casei supplementation can improve lipid metabolism and regulate intestinal flora disorders in patients with alcoholic liver injury.
Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study aims to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus casei on lipid metabolism and intestinal microflora in patients with alcoholic liver injury. METHODS In a double-blind randomized controlled trial, 158 recruited alcoholic liver injury patients were randomized to three treatments for 60 days: low-dose group (LP, n = 58, 100 ml of Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LcS)), high-dose group (HP, n = 54, 200 ml of LcS), and positive control group (PC, n = 46, 100 ml of special drinks without active Lactobacillus casei). Another group of 20 healthy people was served as normal control group (NC). RESULTS The serum levels of TG and LDLC in the HP group were significantly decreased by 26.56% and 23.83%, respectively than those in the PC group (P < 0.05). After supplementation of Lactobacillus casei, there was a significant increase in the amount of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium when compared with the PC group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Supplementation of Lactobacillus casei can improve lipid metabolism and regulate intestinal flora disorders in patients with alcoholic liver injury.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that acute respiratory infection (ARI) is the leading cause of death in children followed by diarrhoea and constipation. In Vietnam, despite many achievements in malnutrition prevention, the rate of malnutrition is elevated. Malnutrition results in ARI, diarrhoea, and physical and mental retardation in children The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a probiotic fermented milk product containing Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LcS) on gastrointestinal symptoms, respiratory infections, and the nutrition status of children from Vietnam. This study was a community based, controlled open trial and it was conducted over a period of 18 weeks consisting of 2-week screening/pre-observational period; 12-week intervention period; and 4-week postintervention period. A total of 1036 children (518 children in the Control group and 518 children in the Probiotic group) were enrolled in this study. Results showed a significant reduction in the incidence of constipation and beneficial effects to prevent infectious diseases in Vietnamese children. Furthermore, while LcS did not affect the duration of diarrhoea, the incidence of diarrhoea tended to be improved after 12 weeks of intervention. Authors conclude that habitual consumption of fermented milk containing LcS prevented constipation and ARI in Vietnamese children, and it may be useful for treating diarrhoea and improving nutritional status, thus conferring remarkable health benefits to children in Vietnam.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy of fermented milk containing Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LcS) on the incidence of constipation, diarrhea, acute respiratory infections (ARI), and nutritional status of young Vietnamese children. METHODS A controlled field trial was conducted with 1003 children (3-5 years old) in Thanh Hoa province in Vietnam. The probiotic group (n = 510) consumed fermented milk 65 mL/day containing 108 CFU/mL of LcS for the 12-week intervention period, whereas the control group (n = 493) was not given any. The incidence of constipation, diarrhea, ARI, and anthropometry in children was determined at baseline, after 4, 8, and 12-week intervention, and after the 4-week follow-up period. RESULTS Probiotic drink decreased the incidence of constipation after the 12-week intervention period (12.0% vs. 32.0%, OR = 0.28 (95% CI: 0.21-0.40), p < 0.001), tended to decrease the incidence of diarrhea (4.9% vs. 7.9%, OR = 0.60 (95% CI: 0.35-1.01), p = 0.068), and prevented the occurrence of ARI (15.9% vs. 24.5%, OR = 0.58 (95% CI: 0.42-0.79), p < 0.001), when compared with the control group. In contrast, no probiotic effects were observed for the duration of diarrhea or ARI. Weight gain was higher in the probiotic group than in the control group after 4, 8, and 12-week intervention and after the 4-week follow-up period (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Daily intake of fermented milk containing LcS strongly prevented the incidence of constipation and ARI in Vietnamese children. This study also revealed the potential effects of the use of a probiotic drink on diarrhea prevention as well as nutritional status improvement.

Exercise has been shown to improve fitness, wellbeing, and health. However, strenuous exercise may be detrimental physiologically, as well as affecting psychological health. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of daily probiotic supplementation on anxiety, stress, mood and fitness levels among competitive badminton players. This study was a randomised, placebo-controlled study. Recruited participants (n=30) were randomly divided into the probiotic group and the control group. The participants were given treatments for six weeks without altering the training schedule of the athletes. Results showed that stress and anxiety in badminton players could be alleviated with the daily consumption of probiotics for six weeks. Additionally, probiotics supplementation increased aerobic capacity. Authors conclude that probiotic supplements could be beneficial for athletes to enhance their mental state and physical performance. Thus, probiotic supplementation that may influence the regulation of pathways (neuro-endocrine) and mechanism of action in response to physical and psychological stressors encountered by badminton players should further studied.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Reports of probiotic consumption on athletes' performance are debatable due to their equivocal results. There is a need for more evidence on the effects of probiotic intake on psychological state and fitness level. Thus, this study determined the effects of daily probiotic consumption on competitive anxiety, perceived stress and mood among university badminton players, besides their fitness like aerobic capacity, strength, speed, leg power and agility. METHODS Thirty university badminton players aged from 19 to 22 years old were randomly divided equally into two groups, where the probiotic group (PG; n = 15) received a drink that contained Lactobacillus casei Shirota (3 × 1010 CFU) and placebo group (CG; n = 15) a placebo drink for six weeks. Anxiety, stress and mood levels were determined using the CSAI-2R, PSS and BRUMS questionnaires, respectively. Fitness levels were measured using by subjecting the players to 20-m shuttle runs (aerobic capacity), handgrips (muscular strength), vertical jumps (leg power), 40-m dash (speed) and T-test (agility). The Student's t-test (p < 0.05) was used to determine the differences between PG and CG players. RESULTS After six weeks, the anxiety and stress levels of PG players significantly decreased by 16% (p < 0.001) and 20% (p < 0.001), respectively, but there were no significant changes detected in CG players. Supplementation of probiotics also improved aerobic capacity in PG players by 5.9% (p < 0.001) but did not influence the speed, strength, leg power and agility. CONCLUSIONS Probiotics supplementation showed improved aerobic capacity and relieve anxiety and stress. However, further studies need to be carried out to determine the mechanisms through which probiotic intake produces these effects.
