The prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, and neurological conditions. The imbalance in glucose and lipid metabolism and hypertension characterises the development of these chronic diseases. Intermittent fasting (IF) has been considered an effective dietary strategy for reducing the risk of obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, and CVD. This systematic review and meta-analysis include ten randomised controlled trials to evaluate the effects of IF intervention on glucose and lipid metabolism in people with metabolic syndrome. IF intervention regulated glucose metabolism by improving fasting blood glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin, insulin, and insulin resistance. IF intervention also positively impacted the body mass index and waist circumference. The total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein levels, and triglyceride levels also improved, followed by the IF, showing the impact on lipid metabolism. Further robust studies are required due to heterogeneity between the included studies in type of IF, duration, the health status of participants, ethnicity, and outcome measurements. However, healthcare professionals can use the results of this systematic review and meta-analysis to understand the therapeutic effect of IF intervention on glycolipid metabolism in people with metabolic syndrome.

Summary Review:
Management of glucose and lipid metabolism can be achieved through weight reduction using dietary interventions such as very low calorie or CHO diets, which may be effective but difficult to sustain long term. An alternative approach for weight management, improved insulin resistance and subsequent prevention of comorbitities e.g. Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and cancer, is Intermittent Fasting (IF). such as time restricted or periodic fasting.
This study summarises the effects of IF dietary interventions lasting less than three months in overweight and obese women with Metabolic Syndrome, defined as the presence of any metabolic dysfunction including obesity, hyperglycaemia, dyslipidaemia or hypertension.
The meta-anlaysis was carried out following PRISMA guidelines. A literature search in PubMed and Medline using the keywords obesity/overweight, IF diet, metabolic syndrome, RCT’s and humans resulted in 10 studies with 12 types of intervention for analysis. The following outcomes were evaluated: glucose and lipid metabolism, insulin resistance, weight loss and blood pressure.
Results were analysed in R software using mean differences and 95% confidence intervals, and either random or fixed effects depending on the Cochrane’s Q and I(2) statistics. Funnel plots were inspected for potential bias and Egger’s regression tests for publication bias.
There were significant differences before and after the interventions for all glucose and lipid metabolism markers as well as body weight and systolic blood pressure :
Glucose metabolism:
- Fasting glucose reduced by 0.15mmol/L
- Insulin plasma reduced by 13.25uUI
- HbA1c reduced by 0.08%
- HOMA-IR (insulin resistance index) reduced by 0.31 on average
Lipid metabolism:
- Total cholesterol reduced by 0.32mmol/L
- LDL reduced by 0.22mmol/L
- Triglyceride reduced by 0.04mmol/L
Weight loss:
- Body weight reduced by 1.87kg
- BMI reduced by 0.8kg/m2
- Waist circumference reduced by 2.08cm
Blood pressure:
- Systolic reduced by 2.58mmHg
- Diastolic reduced by 3.12mmHg
Despite limitations of the meta-analysis, this study demonstrates IF has therapeutic effects on those with disordered lipid and glucose metabolism, and may prove to be an effective and sustainable approach.
Clinical practice applications:
- IF may be an effective alternative to restricted calorie or CHO diets for weight management with the associated benefits of glucose and lipid metabolism.
- IF has been shown to have therapeutic effects on individuals with impaired glucose and lipid metabolism.

Abstract
The question of whether or not intermittent fasting diets improve the clinical indicators of glycolipid metabolism remains unclear. This study systematically reviewed the relevant clinical trials to evaluate the effects of intermittent fasting diet on glucose and lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity in patients with metabolic syndrome. To evaluate the effect of intermittent fasting diet intervention on patients with disorders of glucose and lipid metabolism, random-effect or fixed-effect meta-analysis models were used to calculate the average difference before and after intermittent fasting diet intervention and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). After intermittent fasting diet intervention, in terms of glucose metabolism, fasting blood glucose reduced by 0.15 mmol/L (95% CI: -0.23; -0.06), glycosylated hemoglobin reduced by 0.08 (95% CIs: -0.25; -0.10), insulin plasma levels reduced by 13.25 uUI (95% CIs: -16.69; -9.82), and HOMA-IR decreased by 0.31 on an average (95% CIs: -0.44; -0.19). In addition, BMI decreased by 0.8 kg/m2 (95% CIs: -1.32; -0.28), body weight reduced by 1.87 kg (95% CIs: -2.67; -1.07), and the waist circumference decreased by 2.08 cm (95% CIs: -3.06; -1.10). Analysis of lipid metabolism showed that intermittent fasting diet intervention effectively reduced the total cholesterol level by 0.32 mmol/L (95% CIs: -0.60; -0.05), low-density lipoprotein level by 0.22 mmol/L (95% CIs: -0.37; -0.07), and triglyceride level by 0.04 mmol/L (95% CIs: -0.15; -0.07). Intermittent fasting diets have certain therapeutic effects on blood glucose and lipids in patients with metabolic syndrome and significantly improve insulin resistance. It may be considered as an auxiliary treatment to prevent the occurrence and development of chronic diseases.

At present, the treatment for obesity includes regular physical activity, diet intervention, medication and bariatric surgery. The aim of this study was to summarise the current literature and investigate whether different dietary interventions influence the metabolic indicators of overweight or obesity. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of twelve papers, eight of which were of medium quality. The duration of dietary therapy was usually an average of 19 weeks, from 4 weeks to 24 weeks. Dietary interventions included a calorie-restricted diet, a Mediterranean diet, a low-carb diet, a low-fat diet, and a ketogenic diet. Results show that dietary intervention had a significant effect on changes in fasting insulin, fasting glucose and insulin resistance changes in women. Additionally, dietary intervention also had a positive effect on triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Authors conclude that obese women should follow dietary interventions to improve their metabolic index. Furthermore, future large-scale randomised controlled trial experiments should be performed on specific diet therapies.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dietary therapy may improve glucose and lipid metabolism function in women. However, there is no systematic review to investigate the association between metabolic effects and different dietary interventions in obese women. The main purpose of this study is to summarize the current literature and investigate whether different dietary interventions have an effect on glucose and metabolic indicators of overweight or obese women. METHODS We conducted a scoping review of randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies from 1991 to 2022 by adopting a systematic review and meta-analysis. The database includes Google Scholar, PubMed, Embase and Web of Science. Literature screening, data extraction, and quality assessment were independently completed by 2 researchers. Meta-analysis was performed with RevMan. RESULTS Twelve articles were extracted and the meta-analysis results showed that the mean difference of metabolic indexes of obese women before and after dietary intervention, including fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR (Homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance), TG (triglyceride), TC (total cholesterol), LDL-C (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), HDL-C (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) are -0.13 [-0.15, -0.10], -2.41 [-3.44, -1.38], -0.13 [-0.15, -0.10], -21.71 [-24.19, -19.22], -21.71 [-24.19, -19.22], -13.29 [-17.86, -8.72], 3.31 [2.22, 4.40], respectively. CONCLUSIONS Different dietary interventions benefit glucose and lipid metabolism of overweight or obese women. Further study is needed to determine which specific dietary effects have the greatest effect on improving metabolic indicators.

Modifiable unhealthy behaviours, such as sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and unhealthy food habits, are regarded as important contributors to the widespread prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), which occur concurrently in overweight/obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, hyperglycaemia, and inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether olive leaf extract (OLE) could improve the major cardiovascular-related variables, including lipid profile, glucose haemostasis, blood pressure, as well as liver/kidney and inflammatory markers in the general adult population. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of twelve randomised controlled studies. Results show that OLE supplementation: - significantly decreased triglycerides and systolic blood pressure levels. - only had short-term positive effects on blood pressure and lipid profiles, which may be attributed to the active constituents in OLE. - had more profitable effects on the improvement of triglycerides, blood pressure, total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol measures among participants with hypertension and individuals with normal body weight. Authors conclude that stronger randomised controlled trial investigations, assessing different doses and durations of OLE, are required to better elucidate the effects of OLE supplementation.
Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the effect of olive leaf extract (OLE) supplementation on cardiovascular-related variables, including lipid, glycemic, inflammatory, liver and renal-related factors, as well as blood pressure. METHODS PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane library were searched, up to October 2021, for relevant controlled trials. Mean differences and standard deviations were pooled for all outcomes, using a random-effects model. The methodological quality, as well as quality of evidence were assessed using standard tools. RESULTS Twelve studies (n = 819 participants) were included in our analyses. Overall analyses showed that OLE supplementation significantly decreased triglyceride (TG) levels (WMD = - 9.51 mg/dl, 95% CI - 17.83, - 1.18; P = 0.025; I2 = 68.7%; P-heterogeneity = 0.004), and systolic blood pressure (SBP) (WMD = - 3.86 mmHg, 95% CI - 6.44, - 1.28 mmHg; P = 0.003; I2 = 19.9%; P-heterogeneity = 0.28). Subgroup analyses also revealed a significant improvement in SBP (- 4.81 mmHg) and diastolic blood pressure (- 2.45 mmHg), TG (- 14.42 mg/dl), total cholesterol (TC) (- 9.14 mg/dl), and low-density lipoprotein-C (LDL-C) (- 4.6 mg/dl) measurements, in patients with hypertension. Significant reductions were also observed in TC (- 6.69 mg/dl), TG (- 9.21 mg/dl), and SBP (- 7.05 mmHg) in normal-weight individuals. However, no meaningful changes were seen in glucose hemostasis, liver and kidney, or inflammatory markers. CONCLUSION The present study revealed that supplementation with OLE yielded beneficial effects for blood pressure and lipid profile in adults, especially in patients with hypertension. As the quality of evidence for glucose hemostasis variables, liver, kidney, and inflammatory markers, were low-to-very low, higher quality RCTs may impact the overarching results. Modernisation has brought increased comforts and limited mobility in our lives at the cost of an increased prevalence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidaemia, and obesity, which are predecessors of major cardiovascular diseases. Prevention and control of coronary heart disease and its associated diseases are essential and can be achieved by modifying the lipid profile. The aim of this study was to systematically assess the effects of yoga on blood lipid levels. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of fifty-three randomised controlled studies. All studies employed a parallel design with a total of 13,191 participants whom were divided into 6,700 individuals in the control group and 6,517 in the intervention group. Results show that yoga had decreased total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol among yoga practitioners. Authors conclude that yoga had a striking effect on balancing lipid profiles.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES Yoga is a mind-body stress-relieving exercise that increases mental and physical health, which may have a role in the improvement of metabolic disorders. The present study has reviewed the effect of yoga on lipid profiles as a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS We evaluated the available randomized controlled trials on the effects of yoga-based programs, and lipid profiles by searching PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane central register of control trials up to January 2022. Both fixed and random effect analyses were used to find the relationships. Subgroup analysis was performed based on the continent, duration of the included studies, gender, and health condition of participants to discover the sources of heterogeneity. RESULT Fifty-three studies were included in the current systematic review and meta-analysis with a total sample size of 13,191. There was a striking association between yoga and total cholesterol (-10.31 mg/dl; 95% CI: -14.16, -6.45; I 2 = 82.5%, P < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-8.64 mg/dl; 95% CI: -12.03, -5.25; I 2 = 75.0%, P < 0.001), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (1.98 mg/dl; 95% CI: 0.81, 3.14; I 2 = 91.6%, P < 0.001), triglycerides (-13.50 mg/dl; 95% CI: -20.09, -6.92; I 2 = 90.7%, P < 0.001) and very low-density lipoprotein (-3.94 mg/dl; 95%CI: -6.31, -1.56; I 2 = 72.2%, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION It seems yoga interventions had a substantial effect on lipid profiles, however, more qualified trials or cohort studies are needed to conclude exactly.

Modifiable risk factors such as dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, obesity, and hypertension are characteristics of cardio-metabolic disorder which may lead to diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Previous research has shown an association between vitamin D deficiency and cardio-metabolic disorders. Studies have also shown that vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in older people. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the beneficial effects of Vitamin D supplementation (VDS) on the cardio-metabolic profile in elderly people. Twelve studies are included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. VDS dosage ranged from 400 IU/day to 4000 IU/day generally in most of the included studies, and the duration of intervention ranged from two months to one year. This systematic review and meta-analysis showed an improvement in total cholesterol and triglycerides followed by VDS in elderly participants. The subgroup analysis revealed improved glycaemic indices in elderly people with glycaemic irregularities. Longer-term VDS intervention improved glycaemic control. Further robust studies are required as there is high heterogeneity in the form of the vitamin D, dosage, duration, route of administration and study design of the included studies in this research. However, healthcare professionals can use the results of this study to understand the therapeutic value of VDS in improving the cardio-metabolic health of elderly people.
Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been a longstanding interest in the potential effect of vitamin D in preventing cardiac-metabolic diseases. However, there are divergent results regarding the impact of vitamin D supplementation (VDS) on managing cardiac-metabolic outcomes in the elderly population. MATERIAL AND METHOD We systematically searched electronic databases; Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Cochrane, and ProQuest. We included all trials that evaluated the effect of VDS on cardiac-metabolic risk factors in the elderly population, which were published until 30 September 2021. The effects of VDS on cardiac-metabolic outcomes were assessed using standardized mean difference (SMD). A random-effect model was used to pool the SMD and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULT The literature search identified 4409 studies, of which 12 trials met inclusion criteria. Results of random effect meta-analysis indicated a significant reduction in total cholesterol (TC) (SMD: - 0.14 mg/dl; 95% CI: - 0.25, - 0.02) and triglyceride (TG) (SMD: - 0.45 mg/dl; 95% CI: - 0.86, - 0.04) with VDS compared to the placebo. The subgroup analyses revealed that the reduction of TG in patients with diabetes and vitamin D deficiency was significant. Furthermore, short-term intervention (≤ 6 months) induced a significantly lower level of TG and insulin in comparison to longer duration (> 6 months). CONCLUSION The study suggests that VDS could improve insulin concentration and dyslipidemia in the elderly population. The systematic review was registered in Alborz university of medical sciences with 2060-01-03-1397 number and the Ethics council IR.ABZUMS.REC.1397.207 number.

Cardiovascular disease is characterised by modifiable risk factors such as hypertension, elevated cholesterol and obesity. Sesamin, a lignin found in sesame seeds, is suggested to have anti-obesity, antihypertensive, and cholesterol-lowering properties. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effectiveness of sesamin as an adjuvant therapy for cardiovascular disease. A total of seven randomised controlled trials are included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Four studies used 200 mg/day sesamin dosage, and intervention duration ranged from twenty-eight to sixty days. This systematic review and meta-analysis showed improvements in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and systolic blood pressure. However, the improvements depended on the duration of sesamin intervention, study design and health status. Further robust studies are required to evaluate the benefits of sesamin in improving cardiovascular disease risk factors due to the high heterogeneity of the included studies in sesamin dosage, participant characteristics and study design. However, healthcare professionals can use the results of this study to understand the potential of sesamin to act as a safe, healthy, and sustainable adjuvant therapy in modifying cardiovascular disease risk factors.
Abstract
AIMS: Sesamin, the main lignin constituent of sesame, plays a pivotal role in regulating physical state. Some studies have evidenced that the supplementation of sesamin may decrease cardiovascular disease risk. The goal of this systematic review was to summarize evidence of the effects of sesamin supplementation on obesity, blood pressure, and lipid profile in humans by performing a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. DATA SYNTHESIS Five databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus) were searched electronically from inception to July 2021 to identify randomized controlled trials that assessed the impact of sesamin on obesity, blood pressure, and lipid profile. Weighted mean difference (WMD) and standard deviation (SD) were used to present the major outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Seven trials (n = 212 participants) were included in the overall analysis. Results showed that sesamin supplementation caused a great reduction in TC (WMD: -10.893 mg/dl, 95% CI: -19.745 to -2.041, p = 0.016), LDL-c (WMD: -8.429 mg/dl, 95% CI: -16.086 to -0.771, p = 0.031), and SBP (WMD: -3.662 mmHg, 95% CI: -6.220 to -1.105, p = 0.005), whereas it had no effect on HDL-c, TG, DBP, or weight. Subgroup analysis showed that duration, parallel design, and unhealthy status can affect TC, LDL-c, and SBP evidently. We did not discover a strong link between indicators' changes and duration of supplementation. Sesamin can be used as an obtainable dietary supplement to improve blood pressure and blood lipids, and further as a health product to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Despite advances in medicine, cardiovascular disease (CVD) still remains the primary cause of deaths worldwide. Many of the risk factors of CVD, such as elevated levels of blood fats, high blood pressure, abdominal obesity and poor blood sugar control, can be improved and managed by behaviour, lifestyle and dietary intervention as well as supplements. Berberine (BBR) is a plant-derived compound, available as a supplement, which has gained the attention of researchers due to its ability to modulate cardiovascular risk factors. This dose-response meta-analysis sought to generate a comprehensive overview of the effect of BBR on the risk factors for CVD in adults. The analysis included 49 randomised clinical trials. The results showed BBR significantly reduced blood fats such as total cholesterol, triglycerites and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). It also improved markers of blood sugar control such as fasting blood sugar levels, insulin, HbA1c, HOMA-IR and blood pressure and body weight, whilst enhancing high-density lipoprotein (HDL). The optimal dose of BBR was 1 g/day for triglycerides, total cholesterol, and weight loss. For insulin and HOMA-IR the best effects were seen with 1.8 g/day and for HDL 5 g/day. The most effective timeframe to impact fasting blood sugars seemed to be 40 weeks, and 50 weeks to influence blood pressure and waist circumference. In conclusion, BBR supplementation had beneficial effects on reducing risk factors for CVD, particularly in subgroups with impaired metabolic health. There was no substantial impact on liver enzymes (AST, ALT) or inflammatory markers (CRP, IL-6). Furthermore the supplement was largely ineffective in people with normal body mass index.
Abstract
UNLABELLED Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major concern today. Herbal medicine is one helping way to control CVD risks. One conclusive of herbal medicine is Berberine (BBR) and converse about it still exists, to clarify this issue, this meta-analysis was performed. PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for RCTs in adults on the effect of BBR supplementation on CVD risk factors up to July 2022. The pooled results showed BBR significantly reduced triglyceride (WMD = -23.70 mg/dl; 95%CI -30.16, -17.25; P < 0.001), total cholesterol (WMD = -20.64 mg/dl; 95%CI -23.65, -17.63; P < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein WMD = -9.63 mg/dl; 95%CI, -13.87, -5.39; P < 0.001), fasting blood glucose (FBG) (WMD = -7.74 mg/dl; 95%CI -10.79, -4.70; P < 0.001), insulin (WMD = -3.27 mg/dl; 95%CI -4.46,-2.07; P < 0.001), HbA1c (WMD = -0.45%; 95%CI -0.68, -0.23; P < 0.001), HOMA-IR (WMD = -1.04; 95%CI -1.55, -0.52; P < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (WMD = -5.46 mmHg; 95%CI -8.17, -2.76; P < 0.001), weight (WMD = -0.84; 95%CI -1.34,-0.34; P < 0.001), body mass index (WMD = -0.25 kg/m2; 95%CI -0.46, -0.04; P = 0.020), while increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (WMD = 1.37 mg/dl; 95%CI 0.41,2.23; P = 0.005). The optimal dose of BBR was 1 g/day for TG, TC, and weight, 1.8 g/day for insulin and HOMA-IR, and 5 g/day for HDL. FBG's most efficient time frame was 40 weeks from the beginning of supplementation, whereas DBP and waist circumference was 50 weeks. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common benign disease in middle-aged and elderly men which is often underestimated and underdiagnosed. If patients are not treated in time, it may lead to serious complications, such as urinary retention, renal insufficiency and renal failure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible causal associations of abdominal obesity (measured as waist circumference), overall obesity (measured as body mass index), lifestyle factors (dietary habits, smoking, alcohol drinking, and sedentary behaviour) with risk of BPH. This study is a univariable and multivariable mendelian randomised study. Results show that genetic predisposition to higher waist circumference and sedentary behaviour are independently and causally associated with the risk of BPH. However, there isn’t conclusive evidence that genetic predisposition to relative carbohydrate, fat, protein, and sugar intake, smoking and alcohol drinking are causally associated with the risk of BPH. Authors conclude that further studies are needed to identify comprehensive risk factors on BPH and develop freely accessible prediction models for the BPH. These will help to identify individuals at particular risk and provide decision-making supports for individualised intervention.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity (waist circumference, body mass index (BMI)) and lifestyle factors (dietary habits, smoking, alcohol drinking, Sedentary behavior) have been associated with risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in observational studies, but whether these associations are causal is unclear. METHODS We performed a univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomization study to evaluate these associations. Genetic instruments associated with exposures at the genome-wide significance level (P < 5 × 10-8) were selected from corresponding genome-wide associations studies (n = 216,590 to 1,232,091 individuals). Summary-level data for BPH were obtained from the UK Biobank (14,126 cases and 169,762 non-cases) and FinnGen consortium (13,118 cases and 72,799 non-cases). Results from UK Biobank and FinnGen consortium were combined using fixed-effect meta-analysis. RESULTS The combined odds ratios (ORs) of BPH were 1.24 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.07-1.43, P = 0.0045), 1.08 (95% CI 1.01-1.17, P = 0.0175), 0.94 (95% CI 0.67-1.30, P = 0.6891), 1.29 (95% CI 0.88-1.89, P = 0.1922), 1.23 (95% CI 0.85-1.78, P = 0.2623), and 1.04 (95% CI 0.76-1.42, P = 0.8165) for one standard deviation (SD) increase in waist circumference, BMI, and relative carbohydrate, fat, protein and sugar intake, 1.05 (95% CI 0.92-1.20, P = 0.4581) for one SD increase in prevalence of smoking initiation, 1.10 (95% CI 0.96-1.26, P = 0.1725) and 0.84 (95% CI 0.69-1.02, P = 0.0741) for one SD increase of log-transformed smoking per day and drinks per week, and 1.31 (95% CI 1.08-1.58, P = 0.0051) for one SD increase in sedentary behavior. Genetically predicted waist circumference (OR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.11-1.43, P = 0.0004) and sedentary behavior (OR = 1.14, 95% CI 1.05-1.23, P = 0.0021) were associated with BPH after the adjustment of BMI. CONCLUSION This study supports independent causal roles of high waist circumference, BMI and sedentary behavior in BPH.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is categorised into three main types: type 1 diabetes mellitus, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and gestational diabetes mellitus. T2DM accounts for approximately 90% of diabetes mellitus cases. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of cinnamon on glucose and lipid levels in patients with T2DM. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of fifteen randomised controlled trials with a total of 1020 patients. Results show that blood glycolipid [a carbohydrate that is covalently linked to a lipid] levels were improved dramatically in diabetes patients who received cinnamon instead of a placebo. Cinnamon supplementation also exerted a favourable impact on metabolic (especially glucose, body mass index and lipids) abnormalities. Authors conclude that their findings show a beneficial impact on hypoglycaemia and lipids with cinnamon and cinnamon extract, implicating the extracts as therapeutic agents that might ameliorate hyperglycaemia in diabetes.
Abstract
Background: Cinnamon is a spice used in cooking and in large quantities as a medical complement with hypoglycemic and lipid-lowering properties. The potential pharmacological mechanisms underlying cinnamon's anti-diabetic properties and its active ingredients have not been adequately determined. The current meta-analysis aims to systematically review the potential pharmacological mechanisms underlying the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic efficacy of cinnamon administration and summarize clinical recommendations of cinnamon and its active ingredients. Method: Relevant randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were identified through a literature search that spanned the years January 2005 to April 2022. Retrieve electronic databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Medline, and the Cochrane Library. To obtain standardized mean differences (SMDs), continuous outcomes were pooled and 95 percent confidence intervals (CIs) were provided. Categorical outcomes were aggregated to calculate relative risks (RRs) and were accompanied by 95% CIs. Heterogeneity was measured using the Cochrane Q-test and I2 statistics, with a p < 0.05 considered as substantial heterogeneity. If I2 was less than 50%, a fixed effect model was employed; otherwise, a random effect model was used. Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were performed to identify the origins of heterogeneity. Publication bias was retrieved by means of a funnel-plot analysis and Egger's test. The data were analyzed using revman (V.5.3) and stata (V.15) software packages. Results: These 16 RCTs included a total of 1,020 patients who were followed for a duration ranging from 40 days to 4 months. According to the current meta-analysis results, glycolipid levels in diabetic individuals who received cinnamon were significantly improved as compared to those who got placebo (All p < 0.05). An adverse effect was only detected in one patient. Conclusion: These findings imply that cinnamon has a significant influence on lipid and glucose metabolism regulation. An even more pronounced effect was observed in patients with HbA1c of 8%. The results of this study suggested that cinnamon may be utilized as hypoglycemic and lipid-lowering supplement in clinical settings with a guaranteed safety profile.Systematic Review Registration: [PROSPERO], identifier [CRD42022322735].

Cardiovascular disease and cancer are major causes of mortality worldwide and share common pathophysiological mechanisms and risk factors. The ketogenic diet, a low-carbohydrate and high-fat diet, may alter metabolic pathways, potentially lowering the risk of developing these diseases. Specifically, the ketogenic diet improves energy metabolism by promoting the use of body ketones for energy production. This review examines the protective effects of the ketogenic diet in reducing cardiovascular disease and cancer risk and explores the underlying mechanisms. The ketogenic diet may suppress oxidative stress and inflammation while improving common risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidaemia. It is important to conduct further rigorous studies to assess the long-term effects of the ketogenic diet. However, healthcare professionals can use these findings to understand the short-term benefits of the diet in managing metabolic abnormalities and reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer are the first and second leading causes of death worldwide, respectively. Epidemiological evidence has demonstrated that the incidence of cancer is elevated in patients with CVD and vice versa. However, these conditions are usually regarded as separate events despite the presence of shared risk factors between both conditions, such as metabolic abnormalities and lifestyle. Cohort studies suggested that controlling for CVD risk factors may have an impact on cancer incidence. Therefore, it could be concluded that interventions that improve CVD and cancer shared risk factors may potentially be effective in preventing and treating both diseases. The ketogenic diet (KD), a low-carbohydrate and high-fat diet, has been widely prescribed in weight loss programs for metabolic abnormalities. Furthermore, recent research has investigated the effects of KD on the treatment of numerous diseases, including CVD and cancer, due to its role in promoting ketolysis, ketogenesis, and modifying many other metabolic pathways with potential favorable health effects. However, there is still great debate regarding prescribing KD in patients either with CVD or cancer. Considering the number of studies on this topic, there is a clear need to summarize potential mechanisms through which KD can improve cardiovascular health and control cell proliferation. In this review, we explained the history of KD, its types, and physiological effects and discussed how it could play a role in CVD and cancer treatment and prevention.
