A novel coronavirus named SARS-CoV-2, causing COVID-19, emerged in late 2019. The prognosis of COVID-19 has been consistently reported to worsen with older age, male sex and comorbidities. The aim of this study was to quantify the association between overweight or obesity and COVID-19-related hospitalisations and death, and to assess the magnitude of the association and the potential dose–response relationships. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 208 studies. A total of 3 550 977 participants from over 32 countries were included in this study. Results indicate that being overweight increases the risk of COVID-19-related hospitalisations but not death while obesity and extreme obesity increase the risk of both COVID-19-related hospitalisations and death. In addition, there was a linear dose–response association between obesity categories and COVID-19 outcomes. However, the strength of the association has weakened over time following the pattern of the first wave of COVID-19. Authors conclude that their findings suggest the importance of increased vigilance towards people with excess adiposity. Some preventative measures for this vulnerable group include prompt access to COVID-19 testing and healthcare, as well as prioritisation for COVID-19 vaccination.
Abstract
Objective: To quantify the current weight of evidence of the association between overweight and obesity as risk factors for COVID-19-related hospitalisations (including hospital admission, intensive care unit admission, invasive mechanical ventilation) and death, and to assess the magnitude of the association and the potential dose-response relationships. Design: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Sciences, WHO COVID-19 database and Google Scholar were used to identify articles published up to 20 July 2021. Peer-reviewed studies reporting adjusted estimates of the association between overweight or obesity and COVID-19 outcomes were included. Three authors reviewed the articles and agreed. The quality of eligible studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to estimate the combined effects. Results: A total of 208 studies with 3 550 997 participants from over 32 countries were included in this meta-analysis. Being overweight was associated with an increased risk of COVID-19-related hospitalisations (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.12 to 1.28, n=21 studies), but not death (OR 1.02, 95% CI 0.92 to 1.13, n=21). However, patients with obesity were at increased risk of both COVID-19-related hospitalisations (OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.62 to 1.84, n=58) and death (OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.19 to 1.32, n=77). Similarly, patients with extreme obesity were at increased risk of COVID-19-related hospitalisations (OR 2.53, 95% CI 1.67 to 3.84, n=12) and death (OR 2.06, 95% CI 1.76 to 3.00, n=19). There was a linear dose-response relationship between these obesity categories and COVID-19 outcomes, but the strength of the association has decreased over time. Conclusion: Being overweight increases the risk of COVID-19-related hospitalisations but not death, while obesity and extreme obesity increase the risk of both COVID-19-related hospitalisations and death. These findings suggest that prompt access to COVID-19 care, prioritisation for COVID-19 vaccination and other preventive measures are warranted for this vulnerable group.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition resulting from excessive lipid accumulation in the liver in individuals with low alcohol consumption. Obesity is an established risk factor for the development of NAFLD, and 50% to 75% of people with obesity also have NAFLD. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between Mediterranean diet and non-invasive indices of fatty liver in a large sample of women with overweight and obesity. This study is a cross-sectional study of 2967 consecutive women with overweight and obesity. Results show that higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with lower indices of fatty liver in women with overweight and obesity (particularly obese women than in women who are overweight). Authors conclude that women with obesity, especially during the premenopausal period, may benefit more from following a Mediterranean-style diet.
Abstract
Obesity is a risk factor for NAFLD. However, not all people with obesity have an excessive intrahepatic fat content. Adherence to a high-quality dietary pattern may also promote liver health in obesity. A cross-sectional study of 2967 women with overweight and obesity was carried out to assess the association between a Mediterranean diet and fatty liver. All women underwent clinical examination, anthropometric measurements, blood sampling, ultrasound measurements of abdominal visceral and subcutaneous fat, and assessment of adherence to the Mediterranean diet using the 14-item MEDAS questionnaire. Fatty liver index (FLI), NAFLD fatty liver steatosis (NAFLD-FLS) and hepatic steatosis index (HSI) were calculated. In women with obesity, the MEDAS score was inversely associated with FLI (β = -0.60, 95% CI: -1.04, -0.16, p = 0.008), NAFLD-FLS (β = -0.092, 95% CI: -0.134, -0.049, p < 0.001) and HSI (β = -0.17, 95% CI: -0.30, -0.04, p = 0.011). Stronger associations were observed in premenopausal women with obesity. Mediterranean diet was inversely associated with NAFLD-FLS in women with overweight, independently of menopausal status. In conclusion, Mediterranean diet is associated with a better liver status in women with overweight and obesity. This may have a public health impact and be useful in drafting nutritional guidelines for NAFLD.

Chronic low-grade inflammation plays a significant role in the development of type 2 diabetes. The hot water extract of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as well as the ability to lower blood glucose levels in animal models. Curcuma longa L. extract may improve systemic glucose levels by reducing insulin resistance and pancreatic β-cell dysfunction. In this study, the results from two randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials were reanalysed to assess the effects of hot water extract of C. longa on serum glucose levels in overweight individuals with low-grade inflammation. When compared to the placebo group, participants in the Curcuma longa L. group with high hs-CRP levels showed significant improvements in serum hs-CRP levels and fasting blood glucose levels. Healthcare professionals can use the results of this study to understand the potential beneficial effects of Curcuma longa L. extract on systemic glucose regulation in overweight individuals with low-grade inflammation. Further robust research is needed to investigate the effect of Curcuma longa L. extract on reducing proinflammatory cytokines and suppressing the activation of the NF-kB signalling pathway.
Abstract
The dietary spice Curcuma longa L. (C. longa), also known as turmeric, has various biological effects. A hot water extract of C. longa was shown to have anti-inflammatory activities in preclinical and clinical studies. Chronic low-grade inflammation is associated with the disruption of glucose homeostasis, but the effect of C. longa extract on glucose metabolism in humans is poorly understood. Therefore, we investigated the effect of C. longa extracts on serum glucose levels in the presence of low-grade inflammation. We reanalyzed our published data from two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials in overweight participants aged 50 to 69 years and performed a stratified analysis using the inflammatory marker high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). In both studies, participants took a test food with a hot water extract of C. longa (C. longa extract group, n = 45 per study) or without C. longa extract (placebo group, n = 45 per study) daily for 12 weeks, and we measured the levels of serum hsCRP and fasting serum glucose. The mean baseline hsCRP value was used to stratify participants into two subgroups: a low-hsCRP subgroup (baseline mean hsCRP < 0.098 mg/dL) and a high-hsCRP subgroup (baseline mean hsCRP ≥ 0.098 mg/dL). In the low-hsCRP subgroup, we found no significant difference in fasting serum glucose levels between the two groups in either study, but in the high-hsCRP subgroup, the C. longa extract group had significantly lower levels of serum hsCRP (p < 0.05) and fasting serum glucose (p < 0.05) than the placebo group in both studies. In conclusion, a hot water extract of C. longa may help to improve systemic glucose metabolism in people with chronic low-grade inflammation.

Currently, the ketogenic diet is gaining popularity in managing Type 2 diabetes (T2D). Ketogenic diets replace carbohydrates with fat and include limited carbohydrates and adequate protein. This randomised controlled trial evaluated the effects of the 12-week ketogenic diet on sixty overweight or obese T2D patients. Both the ketogenic and control diabetes diet groups achieved significant reductions in weight, body mass index, waist circumference, triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, and HbA1c. However, the ketogenic group showed significantly greater reductions in body mass, blood lipids, and blood glucose than the control group. In the ketogenic diet group, serum uric acid levels were higher than those in the control diet group. It was found that the control diet group adhered to the diet for a longer period than the ketogenic diet group, whose willingness to adhere to the diet long-term was weaker. More robust long-term studies are needed to evaluate the long-term effects of a ketogenic diet. In this study, more patients who followed the ketogenic diet experienced hypoglycaemic events during the first four weeks. Healthcare providers should exercise caution when recommending a short term therapeutic ketogenic diet.
Abstract
BACKGROUND The ketogenic diet (KD) is characterized by fat as a substitute of carbohydrates for the primary energy source. There is a large number of overweight or obese people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), while this study aims to observe periodic ketogenic diet for effect on overweight or obese patients newly diagnosed as T2DM. METHODS A total of 60 overweight or obese patients newly diagnosed as T2DM were randomized into two groups: KD group, which was given ketogenic diet, and control group, which was given routine diet for diabetes, 30 cases in each group. Both dietary patterns lasted 12 weeks, and during the period, the blood glucose, blood lipid, body weight, insulin, and uric acid before and after intervention, as well as the significance for relevant changes, were observed. RESULTS For both groups, the weight, BMI(body mass index), Waist, TG (triglyceride), TC(cholesterol), LDL (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), HDL (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol), FBG (fasting glucose), FINS (fasting insulin), HbA1c (glycosylated hemoglobin) were decreased after intervention (P < 0.05), while the decrease rates in the KD group was more significant than the control group. However, UA(serum uric acid) in the KD group showed an upward trend, while in the control group was not changed significantly (P > 0.05).The willingness to adhere to the ketogenic diet over the long term was weaker than to the routine diet for diabetes. CONCLUSION Among the overweight or obese patients newly diagnosed as type 2 diabetes mellitus, periodic ketogenic diet can not only control the body weight, but also control blood glucose and lipid, but long-term persistence is difficult.

Infants and children are consuming increasing amounts of foods with added sugars, high in salt, and high in saturated or trans fats. Commercially prepared foods are more likely to be high in energy, low in nutrients (energy dense, nutrient-poor), and ultra-processed. The aim of this study was to examine, in children aged ≤10.9 y, the risks of greater consumption of unhealthy foods and beverages compared with no or low consumption on overweight and obesity. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis which included the summarized characterises of 71 articles from 60 included studies. Results indicate that in children aged ≤10.9 years, consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and unhealthy foods may increase body mass index, percentage body fat, or the odds of overweight/obesity (low to very-low certainty). Furthermore, there was little or no difference to body mass index, percentage body fat, or overweight/obesity outcomes (low certainty) after consumption of artificially sweetened beverages and 100% fruit juices. Authors conclude that policy recommendations are needed to address the growing burden of overweight and obesity that children are experiencing worldwide.
Abstract
This WHO-commissioned review contributed to the update of complementary feeding recommendations, synthesizing evidence on effects of unhealthy food and beverage consumption in children on overweight and obesity. We searched PubMed (Medline), Cochrane CENTRAL and Embase for articles, irrespective of language or geography. Inclusion criteria were: 1) randomized controlled trials (RCTs); non-RCTs; cohort studies and pre/post studies with control; 2) participants ≤ 10.9 y at exposure; 3) studies reporting greater consumption of unhealthy foods/beverages vs. no or low consumption; 4) studies assessing anthropometric and/or body composition; and 5) publication date ≥ 1971. Unhealthy foods and beverages were defined using nutrient- and food-based approaches. Risk of bias was assessed using the ROBINS-I and RoB2 tools for non-randomized and randomized studies, respectively. Narrative synthesis was complemented by meta-analyses where appropriate. Certainty of evidence was assessed using GRADE. Of 26,542 identified citations, 60 studies from 71 articles were included. Most studies were observational (59/60), and no included studies were from low-income countries. The evidence base was low quality, as assessed by ROBINS-I and RoB2 tools. Evidence synthesis was limited by the different interventions and comparators across studies. Evidence indicated that consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) and unhealthy foods in childhood may increase body mass index (BMI)/BMI z-score, % body fat or odds of overweight/obesity (low certainty of evidence). Artificially-sweetened beverages and 100% fruit juice consumption may make little/no difference to BMI, % body fat or overweight/obesity outcomes (low certainty of evidence). Meta-analyses of a subset of studies indicated a positive association between SSB intake and % body fat, but no association with change in BMI and BMI z-score. High-quality epidemiological studies that are designed to assess the effects of unhealthy food consumption during childhood on risk of overweight/obesity are needed to contribute to a more robust evidence base upon which to design policy recommendations. Migraine is a disabling disorder characterized by recurrent attacks affecting the patient’s quality of life. Clinical studies show obesity is an important risk factor for the progression of migraine attacks which is mainly related to inflammatory mediators and adipokines. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of nano-curcumin supplementation on adipokines levels in obese and overweight patients with migraine. This study is a double-blind randomized clinical trial study. Forty-four episodic migraine patients (42 females and 2 males) were enrolled and underwent 2-months nanocurcumin or placebo supplementation. Results show that nano-curcumin significantly reduced MCP-1 levels, attack frequencies, pain severity, and duration of headaches. Authors conclude that targeting curcumin can be a promising approach to migraine management. However further research is needed to determine the gene expression and western blot of the examined adipokines.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to investigate the effects of nano-curcumin supplementation on adipokines levels and clinical signs in obese and overweight patients with migraine. RESULTS Forty-four patients with episodic migraine participated in this clinical trial and were divided into two groups nano-curcumin (80 mg/day) and the control group over 2-month period. At the baseline and the end of the research, the serum levels of MCP-1, Resistin, and Visfatin were measured using the ELISA method. In addition, the headache attack frequencies, severity, and duration of pain were recorded. The results of the present study showed that nano-curcumin can significantly reduce MCP-1 serum levels in the nano-curcumin supplemented group (P = 0.015, size effect = 13.4%). In the case of resistin and visfatin, nano-curcumin supplementation exerted no statistically significant changes in serum levels (P > 0.05). Nano-curcumin also significantly reduced the attack frequencies, severity, and duration of headaches (P < 0.05). These findings indicate that targeting curcumin can be a promising approach to migraine management. However, further comprehensive human trials are needed to confirm these findings. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common group of endocrine metabolic disorders in women of reproductive age, characterised by polycystic ovarian changes, sporadic ovulation and menstrual disorders. The aim of this study was to combine the Mediterranean diet (MED) model with a low-carbohydrates (LC) dietary model based on energy restriction, compared with a low-fat (LF) dietary model, in order to investigate whether this novel dietary model could provide significant improvements in reproductive endocrine and metabolic levels in overweight patients with PCOS. This study is an open-label, parallel-group randomised controlled trial design for a 12-week intervention with a 4-week follow-up. Seventy-two participants were enrolled for the study. Results showed that the LF and MED/LC dietary models were effective in modifying anthropometric parameters, reproductive endocrine levels, insulin resistance levels and lipid levels in patients with PCOS, with the MED/LC dietary model being more effective and the recovery of menstrual cycles being approximately the same in both groups. Authors conclude that the MED/LC diet model is recommended for the treatment of overweight patients with PCOS.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the therapeutic effect of a Mediterranean diet (MED) combined with a low-carbohydrate (LC) dietary model in overweight polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients. METHODS In this 12-week randomized controlled clinical trial, 72 overweight patients with PCOS were randomly assigned to one of two energy-restricted dietary models: the MED/LC diet or the Low fat (LF) diet. After the intervention, the number of the two groups returned to normal menstruation was counted. Body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist-hip ratio (WHR), body fat percentage (BF%), serum fasting insulin(FINS), fasting plasma glucose(FPG), insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), quantitative insulin sensitivity index (QUIKI), total cholesterol (TC) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride (TG), total testosterone (TT), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and prolactin (PRL) were compared between 2 groups before and after intervention. RESULTS MED/LC group had more significant reduction trend in weight (-6.10 ± 1.52 kg vs -4.79 ± 0.97 kg, P < 0.05), BMI (-2.12 ± 0.57 kg/m2 vs -1.78 ± 0.36 kg/m2, P < 0.05), WC (-6.12 ± 5.95 cm vs -3.90 ± 1.58 cm, P < 0.05), WHR (-0.06 ± 0.02 vs -0.03 ± 0.02, P < 0.05), BF% (-2.97% ± 1.78% vs -1.19% ± 0.91%, P < 0.05), TT (-0.20 ± 0.24 ng/mL vs 0.08 ± 0.11 ng/Ml, P < 0.001), LH (-5.28 ± 3.31 mIU/mL vs -3.39 ± 3.64 mIU/mL, P < 0.05), and LH/FSH (-1.18 ± 0.75 vs -0.66 ± 1.05, P < 0.05) compared with the LF group. In addition, FPG (0.05 ± 0.38 mmol/mL vs -0.50 ± 1.01 mmol/mL, P < 0.001), FINS (-4.88 ± 6.11 μU/mL vs -8.53 ± 5.61 μU/mL, P < 0.01), HOMA-IR index (-1.11 ± 1.51 vs -2.23 ± 0.25, P < 0.05), and QUIKI index (0.014 ± 0.016 vs 0.028 ± 0.019, P < 0.05) decreased significantly in the MED/LC group compared with the LF group. Comparing the changes in lipid parameters between the two groups (LF vs MED/LC), significant differences in TG (-0.33 ± 0.32 mmol vs -0.76 ± 0.97 mmol, P < 0.05), TC (-0.40 ± 1.00 mmol vs -1.45 ± 2.00 mmol, P < 0.05), and LDL-C (-0.41 ± 1.05 mmol vs -0.73 ± 0.76 mmol, P < 0.05) were observed. CONCLUSION The results of this study suggest that the MED/LC diet model is a good treatment for overweight PCOS patients, significantly restoring their menstrual cycle, improving their anthropometric parameters and correcting their disturbed endocrine levels, and its overall effectiveness is significantly better than the LF diet model. Therefore, this study recommends that the MED/LC diet model can be used in the clinical treatment of patients with overweight PCOS.

A healthy diet and regular physical activity are primary lifestyle strategies for the prevention and treatment of obesity and its associated conditions. However, poor adherence rates to these strategies limit their effectiveness. Time-restricted eating (TRE) is a popular dietary strategy that emphasises the timing of meals in alignment with diurnal circadian rhythms, permitting ad libitum energy intake during a restricted eating window (8–10 h between the first and last energy intake of the day). The aim of this study was to investigate the isolated and combined effects of TRE and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on glycaemic control and cardiometabolic health outcomes in women with overweight/obesity. This study is a 7-week randomised controlled trial with four parallel groups: TRE (energy intake limited to a %10-h eating window every day), HIIT (three supervised treadmill exercise sessions per week), a combination (TREHIIT), and a control group (CON, no intervention). Participants (n=131) were randomly assigned to one of the four groups. . Results show that 7 weeks of TRE, HIIT, or a combination failed to improve glycaemic control in reproductive-aged women with overweight/obesity. However, the combination of TRE and HIIT significantly reduced glycated haemoglobin levels compared with CON and induced greater losses in body weight, fat mass, and visceral fat area compared with either intervention alone. Isolated TRE resulted in lower nocturnal glucose concentrations compared with CON. Authors conclude that combining TRE with HIIT can rapidly induce several health benefits and decrease metabolic disease risk in women with overweight/obesity. In fact, the high rates of compliance and adherence shown in their findings, highlight the potential of these diet-exercise (TRE and HIIT) protocols to be implemented in clinical practice for treatment and primary prevention of overweight/ obesity.
Abstract
Diet modification and exercise training are primary lifestyle strategies for obesity management, but poor adherence rates limit their effectiveness. Time-restricted eating (TRE) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) improve cardiometabolic health in at-risk individuals, but whether these two interventions combined induce superior improvements in glycemic control than each individual intervention is not known. In this four-armed randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04019860), we determined the isolated and combined effects of 7 weeks of TRE (≤10-h daily eating window, with ad libitum energy intake) and HIIT (three exercise sessions per week), compared with a non-intervention control group, on glycemic control and secondary cardiometabolic outcomes in 131 women (36.2 ± 6.2 years) with overweight/obesity. There were no statistically significant effects after isolated TRE, HIIT, or a combination (TREHIIT) on glucose area under the curve during an oral glucose tolerance test (the primary outcome) compared with the control group (TRE, -26.3 mmol/L; 95% confidence interval [CI], -82.3 to 29.7, p = 0.36; HIIT, -53.8 mmol/L; 95% CI, -109.2 to 1.6, p = 0.057; TREHIIT, -41.3 mmol/L; 95% CI, -96.4 to 13.8, p = 0.14). However, TREHIIT improved HbA1c and induced superior reductions in total and visceral fat mass compared with TRE and HIIT alone. High participant adherence rates suggest that TRE, HIIT, and a combination thereof may be realistic diet-exercise strategies for improving markers of metabolic health in women at risk of cardiometabolic disease.

Long Term Weight Loss Diets and Obesity Indices: Results of a Network Meta-Analysis.

Obesity is associated with a decreased lifetime expectancy of 5–20 years, depending on the severity and the presence of comorbidities. Diet therapy remains one of the cornerstones of the multi-disciplinary approach to weight management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of long-term dietary interventions, categorised using the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges, with changes in weight parameters. This study is a systematic review and network meta-analysis of fifty studies. Results indicate that compared with the usual diet, all dietary interventions allow a sustained modest weight loss during the follow-up of 12 months and beyond. Diets did not differ among each other, with the exception of the high-fat low-carbohydrate diet that was slightly better than the low-carbohydrate, low-fat, and moderate macronutrients diet, with a larger weight loss (of 0.8 kg) and body mass index loss (0.4 kg/m2 ). Authors conclude that even though their findings apply to the general population of patients with overweight/obesity, the long-term impact of dietary approaches on patients with chronic diseases should be further investigated.
Abstract
Background: Scientists have been investigating efficient interventions to prevent and manage obesity. This network meta-analysis (NMA) compared the effect of different diets [moderate macronutrients (MMs), low fat/high carbohydrate (LFHC), high fat/low carbohydrate (HFLC), and usual diet (UD)] on weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) changes at ≥12 months. Methods: We searched Medline, Embase, PubMed databases, and the Cochrane Library. We systematically assessed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating dietary interventions on adults (mean BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) receiving active dietary counseling for ≥12 months. We pooled the data using a random-effect NMA. We assessed the quality of the included RCTs using the Cochrane risk of bias (ROB) tool. Results: We included 36 trials, 14 of which compared HFLC with MM diets. Compared with UD, all diets were associated with a significant weight loss (WL) at ≥12 months, HFLC [mean difference in kg (95% CI): -5.5 (-7.6; -3.4)], LFHC [-5.0 (-7.1; -2.9)] and MM [-4.7 (-6.8; -2.7)]. HFLC, compared with MM diet, was associated with a slightly higher WL (of -0.77 kg) and drop in BMI (of -0.36 kg/m2), while no significant difference was detected in other dietary comparisons. WC was lower with all diets compared to UD, with no significant difference across specific diets. There was no significant interaction of the results with the pre-specified sub-groups. The ROB was moderate to high, mostly related to unclear allocation concealment, high dropout rate and unclear or lack of blinding of participants, providers, and outcome assessors. Conclusion: Dietary interventions extending over ≥12 months are superior to UD in inducing weight, BMI and WC loss. HFLC might be associated with a slightly higher WL compared with MM diets. The hormone irisin is a myokine and is released into the blood from skeletal muscle after exercise. The literature indicates that coconut oil increases the metabolic rate, supports weight loss, and helps to create a feeling of satiety. Hormone irisin was found to play an important role in the pathophysiology of chronic diseases and in exercise. The aims of this study were to determine whether (a) irisin hormone is an important marker in the pathophysiology of obesity, (b) the effect of coconut oil is related to irisin, and (c) coconut oil is suitable for routine use in the diet treatment of obesity. This study is a randomized controlled study adopting two-phase cross-sectional design. All groups in the study consisted of adult individuals between the ages of 19–30 with a body mass index level of 25 kg/m2 − 29.5 kg/m2. Thirteen males (29.5%) and 31 females (70.5%) participated in the study. Results show that coconut oil had no effect on anthropometric measurements. However, coconut oil was found to be associated with the hormone irisin. Both phases of the study revealed that coconut oil reduced the level of hormone irisin in individuals with overweight. Authors conclude that multidisciplinary treatment of individuals with mild obesity should be carried out correctly. Furthermore, dietary therapy should be applied based on evidence in line with the recommendations of national and international guidelines.
Abstract
AIM: This study aimed to discover the effects of coconut oil intake and diet therapy on anthropometric measurements, biochemical findings and irisin levels in overweight individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS Overweight individuals (n = 44, 19-30 years) without any chronic disease were included. In this randomized controlled crossover study, the participants were divided into two groups (Group 1: 23 people, Group 2: 21 people). In the first phase, Group 1 received diet therapy to lose 0.5-1 kg of weight per week and 20 mL of coconut oil/day, while Group 2 only received diet therapy. In the second phase, Group 1 received diet therapy while Group 2 received diet therapy and 20 mL of coconut oil/day. Anthropometric measurements were taken four times. Irisin was measured four times by enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) method and other biochemical findings were measured twice. Statistical analysis was made on SPSS 20. RESULTS The irisin level decreased significantly when the participants only took coconut oil (p ≤ 0.05). There was a significant decrease in the participants' body weight, body mass index (BMI) level and body fat percentage (p ≤ 0.01). Insulin, total cholesterol, low density lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride (TG) levels of all participants decreased significantly (p ≤ 0.05). There was no significant difference in irisin level due to body weight loss (p ≤ 0.05); coconut oil provided a significant decrease in irisin level (p ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION Diet therapy and weight loss did not have an effect on irisin level, but coconut oil alone was found to reduce irisin level. Coconut oil had no impact on anthropometric and biochemical findings.
