The prevalence of overweight or obesity in children is increasing due to changes in dietary structure and exercise habits, as determined by the body mass index (BMI) calculated from height and weight. Childhood obesity can cause some clinical complications such as hypertension, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of probiotics on eight factors in children with overweight or obesity. This study was a systematic review and meta-analysis of four studies with a total of 206 overweight or obesity children. Among them, 105 were in the probiotic group, and 101 were in the placebo group. Results showed that probiotics can improve high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, adiponectin, leptin, and TNF-α in overweight or obese children. The systematic review showed that probiotics work mainly by reshaping disturbed intestinal microbiota, regulating lipid metabolism, reducing inflammation and immune response, playing a positive effect of short-chain fatty acids produced, alleviating oxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum stress, and inhibiting the growth and reproduction of pathogens in the gut. Authors concluded that probiotics could regulate lipid metabolism and immune response to some degree in children with overweight or obesity.
Abstract
BACKGROUND This paper aimed to examine the effects of probiotics on eight factors in overweight or obese children by meta-analysis, namely, body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), adiponectin, leptin and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and summarize the mechanisms of action of probiotics based on the existing researches. METHODS Six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, SinoMed and CNKI) were searched until March 2023. Review Manager 5.4 was used for meta-analysis. The data were analysed using weighted mean differences (WMDs) or standardized mean differences (SMDs) under a fixed effect model or random effect model to observe the effects of probiotic administration on the included indicators. RESULTS Four publications with a total of 206 overweight or obesity children were included. According to the meta-analysis, probiotics were able to significantly decrease the levels of HDL-C (MD, 0.06; 95% CI 0.03, 0.09; P = 0.0001), LDL-C (MD, - 0.06; 95% CI - 0.12, - 0.00; P = 0.04), adiponectin (MD, 1.39; 95% CI 1.19, 1.59; P < 0.00001), leptin (MD, - 2.72; 95% CI - 2.9, - 2.54; P < 0.00001) and TNF-α (MD, - 4.91; 95% CI - 7.15, - 2.67; P < 0.0001) compared to those in the placebo group. Still, for BMI, the palcebo group seemed to be better than the probiotic group (MD, 0.85; 95% CI 0.04, 1.66; P = 0.04). TC (MD, - 0.05; 95% CI - 0.12, 0.02; P = 0.14) and TG (MD, - 0.16; 95% CI - 0.36, 0.05; P = 0.14) were not different between two groups. CONCLUSIONS This review drew that probiotics might act as a role in regulating HDL-C, LDL-C, adiponectin, leptin and TNF-α in overweight or obesity children. Additionally, our systematic review yielded that probiotics might regulate lipid metabolism and improve obese associated symptoms by some paths. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the consumption of extruded SC319 whole sorghum or extruded whole wheat associated with an 8-week daily 500 kcal energy restriction diet on the modulation of intestinal health with a focus on gut microbiota, short-chain fatty acid production, faecal pH, and weight loss and inflammation markers. This study was an 8-week, single-blind, controlled, randomised nutritional intervention study conducted in 21 men with overweight. The participants were randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to receive extruded SC319 whole sorghum or extruded whole wheat. Results showed that consuming SC319 extruded sorghum along with an energy restricted diet achieved greater weight loss and reduced body fat percentage in Brazilian men with overweight compared to the wheat group, with no differences in SCFA synthesis, faecal pH, alpha and beta-diversity, and inflammatory markers. Sorghum consumption promoted alternations in intestinal microbiome composition at the genus level, probably due to the presence of resistant starch and polyphenolic compounds. Authors conclude that sorghum consumption improved weight loss, decreased anthropometric measures, and acted as a prebiotic, thereby changing intestinal microbiome composition.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Sorghum is a cereal source of energy, carbohydrates, resistant starch, proanthocyanidins, and 3-deoxyanthocyanins; it promotes satiety by slowing digestion and benefits intestinal health. OBJECTIVE This study investigated the effects of extruded sorghum SC319 consumption on intestinal health, weight loss, and inflammatory markers in men with overweight. METHODS This was a randomized, controlled, single-blind clinical trial. Twenty-one men were randomly allocated into one of two groups: the sorghum group (test), which received 40 g of extruded SC319 whole sorghum (n = 10), or the wheat group (control), which received 38 g of extruded whole wheat (n = 11) for eight weeks. RESULTS The sorghum consumption increased the weight loss intragroup, decreased the body fat percentage intergroup, and did not change inflammatory markers, while the wheat group had increased IL-6 levels compared to baseline. Short-chain fatty acid production, fecal pH, and α and β diversity indexes did not differ intra- and intergroup after interventions. However, sorghum consumption decreased genus levels of Clostridium_sensu_stricto 1, Dorea, and Odoribacter and increased CAG-873 and Turicibacter compared to baseline. Further, sorghum showed a tendency (p = 0.07) to decrease the proteobacteria phyla compared to wheat. CONCLUSION Extruded sorghum SC319 improved intestinal microbiota and body composition and promoted weight loss, demonstrating its prebiotic potential.

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterised by plaques and lesions on the skin. While the etiopathogenesis of psoriasis is not completely understood, various mechanisms have been implicated, including changes in the composition of intestinal microbes, oxidative stress and changes in the levels of certain trace elements. Previous research has shown that fluctuations in trace minerals such as zinc and copper may contribute to the progression and progression of psoriasis. It is known that synbiotics, which are combinations of probiotics and prebiotics, have immune-modulating properties, and they may also enhance the absorption of trace minerals from food when consumed. This double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial was conducted to randomly assign sixty-four patients with mild-to-moderate psoriasis to consume Lactocare, a symbiotic containing seven strains of probiotic bacteria and prebiotic fructooligosaccharide twice daily or a placebo for 12 weeks. Serum trace mineral levels were measured after 12 weeks of treatment, including Fe, K, Ca, Mg, P, Zn, Na, and Cu. A significant improvement in serum levels of zinc and calcium was observed in the symbiotic group after 12 weeks of treatment. Additionally, the symbiotic treatment significantly increased the levels of trace minerals such as Fe, Ca, Mg, P, Zn, and Na within the group compared to the baseline. Fe and Cu levels in the treatment group were affected by sex, with male participants showing significant differences. To evaluate the other benefits of symbiotic preparations in patients with psoriasis, further large-scale studies are required. Healthcare professionals can utilise the research to understand the immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory properties of symbiotic formulations such as Lactocare, as well as to understand how the consumption of Lactocare improves the absorption of trace minerals.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the exact etiopathogenesis of psoriasis remains unknown, the increasing or decreasing of some trace elements and oxidative stress status are considered to play a role. In this study, the effect of Lactocare® synbiotic on the serum levels of trace elements including Zn, Cu, Mg, Na, Fe, P, Ca, and K in the patients with mild to moderate psoriasis was investigated. METHODS Sixty-four patients with mild to moderate psoriasis were included. Patients were randomly divided into treatment (n═32) and control (n═32) groups. The treatment group received Lactocare® and the control group received a placebo (two times daily for 12 weeks). Eight patients from the intervention group and 18 patients from the control group discontinued the study because of the recent COVID-19 condition. For routine trace element analysis, the blood samples were collected from all patients at the baseline as well as week 12 post-treatment. The serum was then isolated and the serum levels of trace elements including Fe, K, Ca, Mg, P, Zn, Na, and Cu were measured using an automatic electrolyte analyzer. For confirmation of the effect of Lactocare® on the alteration of serum levels of trace elements, intra-group analysis was performed at two interval times: baseline and week 12 post-treatment. RESULTS The serum levels of K, P, and Ca in the placebo group were significantly higher than that of the treatment group at baseline. Serum levels of Zn and Ca were significantly higher in the treatment group compared to the placebo group at week 12 post-treatment. Moreover, a significantly lower serum level of K, P, and Ca in the treatment group at the baseline compared to the placebo group was compensated on week 12 post-treatment. Intra-group analysis in the treatment group showed that the serum levels of Fe, Ca, Mg, P, Zn, and Na was significantly increased at week 12 post-treatment compared to baseline levels. Whereas, intra-group analysis in the control group showed only Ca has a significant difference between baseline and week 12 post-treatment. CONCLUSION The serum levels of Fe, Zn, P, Mg, Ca, and Na are increased significantly 12 weeks after oral administration of Lactocare® in psoriatic patients. The serum level of Fe and Cu is affected by sex at pre- and post-treatment. This study supports the concept that Lactocare® exerts beneficial effects in the gastrointestinal tract to improve mineral absorption in psoriatic patients.

Cigarette smoking can affect airway epithelial cells, causing overproduction of mucus, damage, and inflammation, which may result in the progression of airway diseases. Airway epithelial cells (AEC) rely on mitochondria for energy, and mitochondrial dysfunction may affect innate immunity and the integrity of the airway epithelium. Cigarette smoking is found to accelerate mitochondrial damage within AEC. Maintaining a normal microbial composition within the respiratory tract is essential for maintaining immunity. There is evidence that smoking cigarettes disrupts the microbial composition and increases the spread of pathogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp) which causes inflammation. By exposing 16HBE cells to Sp and cigarette smoke extract (CSE), this study investigated the effect of cigarette smoking on mitochondrial dysfunction in ACE in an in vitro model. Additionally, the study examined the direct and indirect pathways involved in cigarette smoking-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and altered innate immune response to Sp infection. CSE exposure decreases mitochondrial complex protein levels and mitochondrial membrane potential, which affects energy production. It also increases mitochondrial oxidative stress and mitochondrial degradation. All these factors lead to mitochondrial dysfunction in ACE. CSE exposure to ACE was associated with altered gene expression in the tight and adherence junctions that serve as a protective barrier against pathogens and pollutants and reduced type I interferon immune responses to Sp. Using the results of this study, healthcare professionals can gain a better understanding of the impact of cigarette smoking on mitochondrial dysfunction and how it increases susceptibility to Sp-related immune responses. It is necessary to conduct further studies to evaluate the effects of cigarette smoking on mitochondrial dysfunction, microbial composition disruption, and the interaction between AECs and elevated immune responses.
Abstract
Mitochondrial functionality is crucial for the execution of physiologic functions of metabolically active cells in the respiratory tract including airway epithelial cells (AECs). Cigarette smoke is known to impair mitochondrial function in AECs. However, the potential contribution of mitochondrial dysfunction in AECs to airway infection and airway epithelial barrier dysfunction is unknown. In this study, we used an in vitro model based on AECs exposed to cigarette smoke extract (CSE) followed by an infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp). The levels of oxidative stress as an indicator of mitochondrial stress were quantified upon CSE and Sp treatment. In addition, expression of proteins associated with mitophagy, mitochondrial content, and biogenesis as well as mitochondrial fission and fusion was quantified. Transcriptional AEC profiling was performed to identify the potential changes in innate immune pathways and correlate them with indices of mitochondrial function. We observed that CSE exposure substantially altered mitochondrial function in AECs by suppressing mitochondrial complex protein levels, reducing mitochondrial membrane potential and increasing mitochondrial stress and mitophagy. Moreover, CSE-induced mitochondrial dysfunction correlated with reduced enrichment of genes involved in apical junctions and innate immune responses to Sp, particularly type I interferon responses. Together, our results demonstrated that CSE-induced mitochondrial dysfunction may contribute to impaired innate immune responses to Sp.

While human milk provides optimal nutrition for full-term infants, its nutrient density is inadequate for those born preterm. Formula made from bovine milk can provide higher levels of energy and protein but lacks many of the bioactive components found in human milk, including the ‘‘personalised’’ components found only in the mother’s own milk (MOM). The aim of this study was to compare the effects of bovine-derived human milk fortifiers (BHMF) versus human-derived human milk fortifiers (H2MF) on gut microbiome development, oxidative stress, and gut inflammation in human-milk-fed very low birth weight preterm neonates. This study was a randomised controlled trial. Very low birth weight infants were recruited into the study and randomised to receive standard BHMF or H2MF during the intervention period. Results showed that the type of milk fortifier (bovine versus human) had minimal impact on the gut microbiome, whereas the source of human milk (mother versus donor) was strongly associated with microbiome composition. Authors conclude that their findings do not provide a clear biological basis for the clinical impact of H2MF but emphasise the importance of mothers using their own milk to feed their preterm infants.
Abstract
Milk fortifiers help meet the nutritional needs of preterm infants receiving their mother's own milk (MOM) or donor human milk. We conducted a randomized clinical trial (NCT03214822) in 30 very low birth weight premature neonates comparing bovine-derived human milk fortifier (BHMF) versus human-derived fortifier (H2MF). We found that fortifier type does not affect the overall microbiome, although H2MF infants were less often colonized by an unclassified member of Clostridiales Family XI. Secondary analyses show that MOM intake is strongly associated with weight gain and microbiota composition, including Bifidobacterium, Veillonella, and Propionibacterium enrichment. Finally, we show that while oxidative stress (urinary F2-isoprostanes) is not affected by fortifier type or MOM intake, fecal calprotectin is higher in H2MF infants and lower in those consuming more MOM. Overall, the source of human milk (mother versus donor) appears more important than the type of milk fortifier (human versus bovine) in shaping preterm infant gut microbiota.

Obesity, and particularly abdominal adiposity, is associated with various metabolic abnormalities. Diet has a vital role in preventing and managing obesity, but evidence from clinical studies demonstrates there is a great interindividual variability in response to the same dietary intervention, which likely indicates that no one diet is superior to another. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of the PREVENTOMICS (empowering consumers to PREVENT diet-related diseases through OMICS sciences) platform, incorporated in an e-commerce digital tool, for producing more favourable health outcomes over dietary plans based on general diet recommendations, in subjects with overweight or obesity and elevated waist circumference. This study is a 10-week randomised single-centre, parallel-group, double-blinded intervention study. Participants were allocated in a 1:1 ratio, stratified by cluster to either the intervention group (personalised plan) or the control group (generic recommendations). Results show that there isn’t any additional benefit of personalising dietary plans, over a generic approach, on the change in fat mass and body weight in individuals with overweight or obesity and elevated waist circumference. Accordingly, personalisation of the diet did not significantly improve health parameters beyond the changes induced by the control diet. Participants in both groups lost approximately 3 kg of body weight. Authors conclude that based on their findings evidence to translate personalised nutrition approaches into clinical practice is insufficient.
Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Growing evidence suggests that biomarker-guided dietary interventions can optimize response to treatment. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of the PREVENTOMCIS platform-which uses metabolomic and genetic information to classify individuals into different 'metabolic clusters' and create personalized dietary plans-for improving health outcomes in subjects with overweight or obesity. METHODS A 10-week parallel, double-blinded, randomized intervention was conducted in 100 adults (82 completers) aged 18-65 years, with body mass index ≥27 but <40 kg/m2, who were allocated into either a personalized diet group (n = 49) or a control diet group (n = 51). About 60% of all food was provided free-of-charge. No specific instruction to restrict energy intake was given. The primary outcome was change in fat mass from baseline, evaluated by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Other endpoints included body weight, waist circumference, lipid profile, glucose homeostasis markers, inflammatory markers, blood pressure, physical activity, stress and eating behavior. RESULTS There were significant main effects of time (P < 0.01), but no group main effects, or time-by-group interactions, for the change in fat mass (personalized: -2.1 [95% CI -2.9, -1.4] kg; control: -2.0 [95% CI -2.7, -1.3] kg) and body weight (personalized: -3.1 [95% CI -4.1, -2.1] kg; control: -3.3 [95% CI -4.2, -2.4] kg). The difference between groups in fat mass change was -0.1 kg (95% CI -1.2, 0.9 kg, P = 0.77). Both diets resulted in significant improvements in insulin resistance and lipid profile, but there were no significant differences between groups. CONCLUSION Personalized dietary plans did not result in greater benefits over a generic, but generally healthy diet, in this 10-week clinical trial. Further studies are required to establish the soundness of different precision nutrition approaches, and translate this science into clinically relevant dietary advice to reduce the burden of obesity and its comorbidities. The effects of polyphenols and phosphocreatine supplementation on exercise performance, muscular strength, power, and endurance are largely unknown. This randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel-design trial aimed to differentiate the effects of a blend of 5 grams of phosphocreatine disodium salts plus 200 mg blueberry extract (PCDSB), 3 grams of Creatinine monohydrate (CM), and placebo on measures of muscular strength, power, and endurance. PCDSB contained 60 grams of phenols and 2.5 grams of pure creatine, and CM contained 2.4 grams of pure creatin. During this trial, thirty-three men took random supplements for 28 days and kept up their regular exercise regimen. In both PCDSB and CM, Peak torque (PT) and Average power (AP) increased after 28 days of supplementation with no effect on fatigue-induced PT% and AP% or body mass. Additionally, a greater proportion of participants showed a meaningful increase in muscular strength to PCDSB than to CM. To evaluate the additive effects of ingredients in the PCDSB supplement, longer-term studies are needed with larger supplementation doses. The study provides insight into the ergogenic effects of PCDSB and CM for healthcare practitioners.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of creatine supplementation for improvements in exercise performance. Few studies, however, have examined the effects of phosphocreatine supplementation on exercise performance. Furthermore, while polyphenols have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, little is known regarding the influence of polyphenol supplementation on muscular strength, power, and endurance. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to compare the effects of 28 days of supplementation with phosphocreatine disodium salts plus blueberry extract (PCDSB), creatine monohydrate (CM), and placebo on measures of muscular strength, power, and endurance. METHODS Thirty-three men were randomly assigned to consume either PCDSB, CM, or placebo for 28 days. Peak torque (PT), average power (AP), and percent decline for peak torque (PT%) and average power (AP%) were assessed from a fatigue test consisting of 50 maximal, unilateral, isokinetic leg extensions at 180°·s- 1 before and after the 28 days of supplementation. Individual responses were assessed to examine the proportion of subjects that exceeded a minimal important difference (MID). RESULTS The results demonstrated significant (p < 0.05) improvements in PT for the PCDSB and CM groups from pre- (99.90 ± 22.47 N·m and 99.95 ± 22.50 N·m, respectively) to post-supplementation (119.22 ± 29.87 N·m and 111.97 ± 24.50 N·m, respectively), but no significant (p = 0.112) change for the placebo group. The PCDSB and CM groups also exhibited significant improvements in AP from pre- (140.18 ± 32.08 W and 143.42 ± 33.84 W, respectively) to post-supplementation (170.12 ± 42.68 W and 159.78 ± 31.20 W, respectively), but no significant (p = 0.279) change for the placebo group. A significantly (p < 0.05) greater proportion of subjects in the PCDSB group exceeded the MID for PT compared to the placebo group, but there were no significant (p > 0.05) differences in the proportion of subjects exceeding the MID between the CM and placebo groups or between the CM and PCDSB groups. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicated that for the group mean responses, 28 days of supplementation with both PCDSB and CM resulted in increases in PT and AP. The PCDSB, however, may have an advantage over CM when compared to the placebo group for the proportion of individuals that respond favorably to supplementation with meaningful increases in muscular strength.

Plant-based multivitamin/mineral and phytonutrient (PMP) supplementation has been reported to reduce oxidative stress, thus alleviating many chronic diseases, though inconsistent results have been published. The aim of this randomised, double-blind, parallel-arm, placebo-controlled trial was to determine the antioxidant and protective capacity of a PMP supplementation in 96 healthy adults with habitually low fruit and vegetable intake. After a two-week run in period, participants were randomised to consume either a PMP supplement or colour-matched control for eight weeks. The PMP supplement contained 14 vitamins, 10 minerals and 22 phytonutrient extracts. Blood was taken at baseline and conclusion of the intervention period. This study found that after an eight-week PMP supplementation, several plasma vitamins and phytonutrients were associated with reduced markers of oxidation and DNA damage compared to the control group. Based on these results, the authors conclude PMP supplement may support the body's ability to handle oxidative stress and suggest further research be conducted to better understand the role mechanisms action of phytonutrients.
Abstract
Phytonutrients and vitamin and mineral supplementation have been reported to provide increased antioxidant capacity in humans; however, there is still controversy. In the current clinical trial, we examined the antioxidant and DNA protection capacity of a plant-based, multi-vitamin/mineral, and phytonutrient (PMP) supplementation in healthy adults who were habitually low in the consumption of fruits and vegetables. This study was an eight-week, double-blind, randomized, parallel-arm, and placebo-controlled trial. PMP supplementation for eight weeks reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and prevented DNA damage without altering endogenous antioxidant system. Plasma vitamins and phytonutrients were significantly correlated with ROS scavenging and DNA damage. In addition, gene expression analysis in PBMC showed subtle changes in superoxide metabolic processes. In this study, we showed that supplementation with a PMP significantly improved ROS scavenging activity and prevented DNA damage. However, additional research is still needed to further identify mechanisms of actions and the role of circulating phytonutrient metabolites.

The aim of this meta-analysis was to summarise the current evidence regarding the association between red meat and processed meat consumption with breast cancer incidence. According to the existing literature, there is evidence that higher consumption of processed meat, but not red meat, is associated with higher risk of breast cancer. Based on these results, the authors conclude further research is required to better understand the effects of dietary risk factors in various molecular subtypes of breast cancer.
Abstract
Prior studies on red and processed meat consumption with breast cancer risk have generated inconsistent results. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies to summarize the evidence regarding the relation of red meat and processed meat consumption with breast cancer incidence. We searched in MEDLINE and EMBASE databases through January 2018 for prospective studies that reported the association between red meat and processed meat consumption with incident breast cancer. The multivariable-adjusted relative risk (RR) was combined comparing the highest with the lowest category of red meat (unprocessed) and processed meat consumption using a random-effect meta-analysis. We identified 13 cohort, 3 nested case-control and two clinical trial studies. Comparing the highest to the lowest category, red meat (unprocessed) consumption was associated with a 6% higher breast cancer risk (pooled RR,1.06; 95% confidence intervals (95%CI):0.99-1.14; I2 = 56.3%), and processed meat consumption was associated with a 9% higher breast cancer risk (pooled RR, 1.09; 95%CI, 1.03-1.16; I2 = 44.4%). In addition, we identified two nested case-control studies evaluating the association between red meat and breast cancer stratified by N-acetyltransferase 2 acetylator genotype. We did not observe any association among those with either fast (per 25 g/day pooled odds ratio (OR), 1.18; 95%CI, 0.93-1.50) or slow N-acetyltransferase 2 acetylators (per 25 g/day pooled OR, 0.99; 95%CI, 0.91-1.08). In the prospective observational studies, high processed meat consumption was associated with increased breast cancer risk.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune inflammatory skin disease that causes red, itchy, flaky and scaly skin. Skin integrity and function are critically dependent on the microbial population on it. Based on this systematic review, the immune system's interaction with microbes on the skin was examined and its relationship to psoriasis. T-cell mediated inflammation is characteristic of psoriasis where interaction between type IV collagen and α1β1 integrin, a collagen receptor, occurs. In psoriatic skin lesions, Firmicutes were predominant, while Actinobacteria were less prevalent. Psoriasis exacerbations are also associated with an exacerbated number of fungi, Malassezia species, in skin lesions. As therapeutic strategies for psoriasis, this systematic review suggests adhering to a gluten-free diet and incorporating prebiotics and probiotics such as Lactobacillus. However, further research is needed to develop specific therapeutic and skin modulation strategies. Health care professionals can benefit from this systematic review by understanding the pathophysiology behind psoriasis and possible therapeutic strategies to consider.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent advances have highlighted the crucial role of microbiota in the pathophysiology of chronic inflammatory diseases as well as its impact on the efficacy of therapeutic agents. Psoriasis is a chronic, multifactorial inflammatory skin disorder, which has a microbiota distinct from healthy, unaffected skin. AIM: Through an extensive review of the literature, we aim to discuss the skin and gut microbiota and redefine their role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. CONCLUSIONS Unfortunately, the direct link between the skin microbiota and the pathogenesis of psoriasis remains to be clearly established. Apart from improving the course of psoriasis, selective modulation of the microbiota may increase the efficacy of medical treatments as well as attenuate their side effects.
