Lactobacillus plantarum, has become increasingly popular in reducing the severity of anxiety and depression in stressed animal models. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the psychological effects of Lactobacillus plantarum JYLP-326 (JYLP-326) on exam stress-induced behaviours like anxiety, depression, and insomnia. This study enrolled 60 anxious and 30 un-anxious undergraduates preparing for the approaching exams. Out of the 60 anxious participants, 30 were selected randomly to receive the probiotic product and the other 30 received a placebo product. The 30 un-anxious students were assigned as the healthy control group. Results demonstrated that the intervention of JYLP-326 is effective in alleviating exam stress-induced symptoms in college students. Furthermore, it also protected against exam stress-induced dysbiosis of the gut microbiota and the disturbances of faecal metabolomic. Authors conclude that the changed gut microbiota genera and faecal metabolites were closely associated with stress-related symptoms like anxiety/depression and insomnia, indicating that they might be regarded as biomarkers for diagnosing and treating stress and anxiety disorders.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION Test anxiety is a common issue among college students, which can affect their physical and psychological health. However, effective interventions or therapeutic strategies are still lacking. This study aims to evaluate the potential effects of Lactobacillus plantarum JYLP-326 on test anxious college students. METHODS Sixty anxious students were enrolled and randomly allocated to the placebo group and the probiotic group. Both groups were instructed to take placebo and JYLP-326 products twice per day for three weeks, respectively. Thirty unanxious students with no treatments were assigned to a regular control group. The anxiety, depression, and insomnia questionnaires were used to measure students' mental states at the baseline and the end of this study. 16S rRNA sequencing and untargeted metabolomics were performed to analyze the changes in the gut microbiota and fecal metabolism. RESULTS The questionnaire results suggested that JYLP-326 administration could relieve the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and insomnia in test anxious students. The gut microbiomes of the placebo group showed a significantly greater diversity index than the control group (p < 0.05). An increased abundance of Bacteroides and Roseburia at the genus level was observed in the placebo group, and the relative abundance of Prevotella and Bifidobacterium decreased. Whereas, JYLP-326 administration could partly restore the disturbed gut microbiota. Additionally, test anxiety was correlated with disordered fecal metabolomics such as a higher Ethyl sulfate and a lower Cyclohexylamine, which could be reversed after taking JYLP-326. Furthermore, the changed microbiota and fecal metabolites were significantly associated with anxiety-related symptoms. CONCLUSION The results indicate that the intervention of L. plantarum JYLP-326 could be an effective strategy to alleviate anxiety, depression, and insomnia in test anxious college students. The potential mechanism underlying this effect could be related to the regulation of gut microbiota and fecal metabolites.

Anxiety and depression are the most common mental health disorders and a bidirectional relationship exists between the gut and the brain, the gut-brain axis, which may be mediated by metabolites of the gut microbiome, which include various neurotransmitters. Prebiotics, such as 2'fucosyllactose (2FS, a human milk oligosaccharide) and oligofructose (OF, an inulin-type fructan) can modulate the microbiome and may as such affect mood. The aim of this double-blind, randomised-controlled trial, including 96 healthy adults with mild/moderate levels of stress/anxiety, was to evaluate the effect of a 4-week course of 2FS and OF individually and combined versus maltodextrin (as a placebo) on the microbiome and mood. Significant positive changes in the microbiome were seen in the OF and the OF+2FS groups, compared to control. Improvements in mood (anxiety, depression, positive and negative affect and cortisol awakening response) were seen in all 3 intervention groups compared to control but generally stronger in the OF and the OF+2FS groups. The authors concluded that OF alone and in combination with 2FS has beneficial effects for mood and microbiome composition, whilst the effects on the microbiome of 2FS alone require further study.
Abstract
BACKGROUND There is increasing interest in the bidirectional relationship existing between the gut and brain and the effects of both oligofructose and 2'fucosyllactose to alter microbial composition and mood state. Yet, much remains unknown about the ability of oligofructose and 2'fucosyllactose to improve mood state via targeted manipulation of the gut microbiota. OBJECTIVES We aimed to compare the effects of oligofructose and 2'fucosyllactose alone and in combination against maltodextrin (comparator) on microbial composition and mood state in a working population. METHODS We conducted a 5-wk, 4-arm, parallel, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 92 healthy adults with mild-to-moderate levels of anxiety and depression. Subjects were randomized to oligofructose 8 g/d (plus 2 g/d maltodextrin); maltodextrin 10 g/d; oligofructose 8 g/d plus 2'fucosyllactose (2 g/d) or 2'fucosyllactose 2 g/d (plus 8 g/d maltodextrin). Changes in microbial load (fluorescence in situ hybridization-flow cytometry) and composition (16S ribosomal RNA sequencing) were the primary outcomes. Secondary outcomes included gastrointestinal sensations, bowel habits, and mood state parameters. RESULTS There were significant increases in several bacterial taxa including Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides, Roseburia, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii in both the oligofructose and oligofructose/2'fucosyllactose interventions (all P ≤ 0.05). Changes in bacterial taxa were highly heterogenous upon 2'fuscoyllactose supplementation. Significant improvements in Beck Depression Inventory, State Trait Anxiety Inventory Y1 and Y2, and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule scores and cortisol awakening response were detected across oligofructose, 2'fucosyllactose, and oligofructose/2'fucosyllactose combination interventions (all P ≤ 0.05). Both sole oligofructose and oligofructose/2'fuscosyllactose combination interventions outperformed both sole 2'fucosyllactose and maltodextrin in improvements in several mood state parameters (all P ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION The results of this study indicate that oligofructose and combination of oligofructose/2'fucosyllactose can beneficially alter microbial composition along with improving mood state parameters. Future work is needed to understand key microbial differences separating individual responses to 2'fucosyllactose supplementation. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT05212545.

During pregnancy, evidence has been provided regarding the potential beneficial effects that structured dietary interventions based on a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) can have, not only on pregnant women, but also their offspring and the pregnancy itself. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of a structured intervention during pregnancy based on a MedDiet on maternal stress and anxiety, mindful state, quality of life and sleep. This study is a parallel, unblinded randomised clinical trial. Participants - pregnant women at high risk for small-for-gestational-age newborns - were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to one of the three study groups: a MedDiet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and walnuts; a stress reduction intervention based on the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme; or usual care without any intervention (control group). Results show that an intervention based on MedDiet during pregnancy: - significantly improved well-being and sleep quality. - is associated with a reduction in maternal anxiety/stress, together with an increase in the cortisol-deactivating enzyme. Authors conclude that a MedDiet intervention significantly reduces maternal anxiety and stress, as well as improving well-being and sleep quality during gestation.
Abstract
Stress and anxiety are frequent occurrences among pregnant women. We aimed to evaluate the effects of a Mediterranean diet intervention during pregnancy on maternal stress, well-being, and sleep quality throughout gestation. In a randomized clinical trial, 1221 high-risk pregnant women were randomly allocated into three groups at 19-23 weeks' gestation: a Mediterranean diet intervention, a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program, or usual care. All women who provided self-reported life-style questionnaires to measure their anxiety (State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)), well-being (WHO Five Well Being Index (WHO-5)), and sleep quality (Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI)) at enrollment and at the end of the intervention (34-36 weeks) were included. In a random subgroup of 106 women, the levels of cortisol and related metabolites were also measured. At the end of the intervention (34-36 weeks), participants in the Mediterranean diet group had significantly lower perceived stress and anxiety scores (PSS mean (SE) 15.9 (0.4) vs. 17.0 (0.4), p = 0.035; STAI-anxiety mean (SE) 13.6 (0.4) vs. 15.8 (0.5), p = 0.004) and better sleep quality (PSQI mean 7.0 ± 0.2 SE vs. 7.9 ± 0.2 SE, p = 0.001) compared to usual care. As compared to usual care, women in the Mediterranean diet group also had a more significant increase in their 24 h urinary cortisone/cortisol ratio during gestation (mean 1.7 ± SE 0.1 vs. 1.3 ± SE 0.1, p < 0.001). A Mediterranean diet intervention during pregnancy is associated with a significant reduction in maternal anxiety and stress, and improvements in sleep quality throughout gestation.

Poor dietary quality is well established as a potentially modifiable risk factor for mental disorders. The NOVA food classification system was recently developed to enable the categorisation of food items based on distinctive levels of processing. The aim of this study was to synthesise and provide quantitative analyses of the most up-to-date evidence assessing associations between consumption of ultra-processed food, as defined by the NOVA food classification system, and mental disorders. This study is systematic review and meta-analysis of 17 studies with a total of 385,541 participants. The studies were 15 cross-sectional and 2 prospectively designed studies. Results show that ultra-processed food consumption is bidirectionally associated with adverse mental health. In fact, greater intake of ultra-processed food was associated with increased odds of depressive and anxiety symptoms, both when these outcomes were assessed together as well as separately. Authors conclude that further prospective and experimental studies are required to better determine directionality and causality and ensure that global preventative and treatment strategies are efficacious and appropriate.
Abstract
Since previous meta-analyses, which were limited only to depression and by a small number of studies available for inclusion at the time of publication, several additional studies have been published assessing the link between ultra-processed food consumption and depression as well as other mental disorders. We aimed to build on previously conducted reviews to synthesise and meta-analyse the contemporary evidence base and clarify the associations between the consumption of ultra-processed food and mental disorders. A total of 17 observational studies were included (n = 385,541); 15 cross-sectional and 2 prospective. Greater ultra-processed food consumption was cross-sectionally associated with increased odds of depressive and anxiety symptoms, both when these outcomes were assessed together (common mental disorder symptoms odds ratio: 1.53, 95%CI 1.43 to 1.63) as well as separately (depressive symptoms odds ratio: 1.44, 95%CI 1.14 to 1.82; and, anxiety symptoms odds ratio: 1.48, 95%CI 1.37 to 1.59). Furthermore, a meta-analysis of prospective studies demonstrated that greater ultra-processed food intake was associated with increased risk of subsequent depression (hazard ratio: 1.22, 95%CI 1.16 to 1.28). While we found evidence for associations between ultra-processed food consumption and adverse mental health, further rigorously designed prospective and experimental studies are needed to better understand causal pathways.

The low-FODMAP diet eliminates carbohydrates that cannot be easily digested in order to reduce functional gastrointestinal symptoms associated with irritable bowel disease (IBD). The symptoms of irritable bowel disease include abdominal pain and bloating. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate whether a low-FODMAP diet can alleviate functional gastrointestinal symptoms in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease. In comparison with a regular diet, a low-FODMAP diet significantly reduced symptoms of bloating, wind, flatulence, abdominal pain, fatigue, and lethargy in patients with IBD. In addition, patients with Crohn's disease have achieved remission or reduced symptoms after following a low-FODMAP diet. Healthcare professionals can use this study to understand better the effects of a low-FODMAP diet on patients with IBD who have functional gastrointestinal symptoms. Further robust studies are, however, required to evaluate the evidence's robustness and identify the mechanism behind the improvement of symptoms.

Introduction
This meta-analysis assesses the efficacy of a low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols diet (LFD) in inflammatory bowel disease [IBD: ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (UC)] participants with functional gastrointestinal symptoms (FGSs).
Methods
A search was performed on PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang (Chinese) Database up to March 2022. Quality assessment of all included studies was performed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols diet (LFD) is claimed to improve functional gastrointestinal symptoms (FGSs). However, the role of LFD in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients with FGSs remains unclear. OBJECTIVE To systematically assess the efficacy of LFD in IBD patients with FGSs. METHODS Six databases were searched from inception to 1 January 2022. Data were synthesized as the relative risk of symptoms improvement and normal stool consistency, mean difference of Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS), Short IBD Questionnaire (SIBDQ), IBS Quality of Life (IBS-QoL), Harvey-Bradshaw index (HBi), Mayo score, and fecal calprotectin (FC). Risk of bias was assessed based on study types. A funnel plot and Egger's test were used to analyze publication bias. RESULTS This review screened and included nine eligible studies, including four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and five before-after studies, involving a total of 446 participants (351 patients with LFD vs. 95 controls). LFD alleviated overall FGSs (RR: 0.47, 95% CI: 0.33-0.66, p = 0.0000) and obtained higher SIBDQ scores (MD = 11.24, 95% CI 6.61 to 15.87, p = 0.0000) and lower HBi score of Crohn's disease (MD = -1.09, 95% CI -1.77 to -0.42, p = 0.002). However, there were no statistically significant differences in normal stool consistency, BSFS, IBS-QoL, Mayo score of ulcerative colitis, and FC. No publication bias was found. CONCLUSIONS LFD provides a benefit in FGSs and QoL but not for improving stool consistency and mucosal inflammation in IBD patients. Further well-designed RCTs are needed to develop the optimal LFD strategy for IBD.

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for local and advanced prostate cancer (PCa) is effective at reducing androgens, and thus inhibiting tumour progression. However, testosterone reduces the production of a highly neurotoxic protein (amyloid beta peptide 40), which is linked with the development of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a multi-component resistance-based exercise programme with daily protein, vitamin D and calcium supplementation on cognitive function compared with usual care in PCa survivors treated with ADT. This study is a secondary analysis of a 12-month single-blinded, two-arm randomised controlled trial. Participants (n = 70) were randomised (1:1 ratio) to either: (a) multi-component exercise intervention including progressive resistance training, body-weight impact and balance exercises, as well as a daily nutritional supplement containing whey protein, calcium and vitamin D, or (b) usual care control receiving 1000 IU vitamin D only. Results show that a multicomponent exercise training and nutritional supplementation intervention did not improve cognitive function in men treated with ADT for PCa compared with usual care. Authors conclude that cognitive decline associated with ADT may mechanistically differ to that of general age-related cognitive declines, thus it is important that future studies also examine other intervention modalities.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this preplanned secondary analysis of a 12-month randomised controlled trial was to investigate the effects of a multicomponent exercise programme combined with daily whey protein, calcium and vitamin D supplementation on cognition in men with prostate cancer treated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). DESIGN 12-month, two-arm, randomised controlled trial. SETTING University clinical exercise centre. PARTICIPANTS 70 ADT-treated men were randomised to exercise-training plus supplementation (Ex+ Suppl, n=34) or usual care (control, n=36). INTERVENTION Men allocated to Ex + Suppl undertook thrice weekly resistance training with weight-bearing exercise training plus daily whey protein (25 g), calcium (1200 mg) and vitamin D (2000 IU) supplementation. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES Cognition was assessed at baseline, 6 and 12 months via a computerised battery (CogState), Trail-making test, Rey auditory-verbal learning test and Digit span. Data were analysed with linear mixed models and an intention-to-treat and prespecified per-protocol approach (exercise-training: ≥66%, nutritional supplement: ≥80%). RESULTS Sixty (86%) men completed the trial (Ex + Suppl, n=31; control, n=29). Five (7.1%) men were classified as having mild cognitive impairment at baseline. Median (IQR) adherence to the exercise and supplement was 56% (37%-82%) and 91% (66%-97%), respectively. Ex + Suppl had no effect on cognition at any time. CONCLUSIONS A 12-month multicomponent exercise training and supplementation intervention had no significant effect on cognition in men treated with ADT for prostate cancer compared with usual care. Exercise training adherence below recommended guidelines does not support cognitive health in men treated with ADT for prostate cancer. Migraine is a chronic, multifactorial headache with multiple comorbid conditions. Previous studies have shown a correlation between food-specific IgG antibodies and chronic inflammation in migraineurs. IgG antibody detection may therefore be a biomarker for migraine since it plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of the disease. This cross-sectional clinical trial investigated the relationship between IgG antibodies against food antigens and headaches, gastrointestinal symptoms, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, dermatosis and inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, TNFα, and IL-10. In this study, migraine patients who had positive food-specific IgG antibodies had severe migraine, anxiety, gastrointestinal symptoms, and elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNFα, indicating a causal relationship. However, further studies are required to determine the immune reaction to food antigens and the effect of eliminating IgG positive foods on migraine and its associated comorbidities. Nevertheless, this study can help healthcare professionals understand how food-specific antibodies play a role in diagnosing and treating migraine.
Abstract
PURPOSE The relationship between food allergy caused by food specific IgG antibodies and migraine has received increased attention in recent years. Here, we aimed to evaluate the effects of food specific IgG antibodies on headache, gastrointestinal symptoms, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, dermatosis, and serum inflammatory cytokines in migraine patients, and to quantitatively assess the effect of IgG levels on the severity of headache and its comorbidities. METHODS Of 89 migraine patients, those who had one or more food specific IgG antibodies ≥50 U/mL were classified into the IgG positive group, which was then further divided into subgroups based on differing numbers of food allergens. All other subjects were classified into the IgG negative group. We compared the frequency and severity of migraine, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, dermatosis, and inflammatory cytokines between groups. A regression model was performed to further assess the effect of overall positive IgG concentration and the mediation effect of inflammatory cytokines. RESULTS Participants in the positive IgG group (n = 67) were more likely to have longer time elapsed since diagnosis, more frequent and severe migraine, a higher risk of developing anxiety and gastrointestinal symptoms, along with higher IL-6 and TNF-α. Subgroups with more food allergens generally had worse conditions as well. After adjusting for the inflammatory cytokines, the effect of IgG was reduced. CONCLUSION Migraine patients with positive food specific IgG antibodies had worse migraine, anxiety, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Inflammatory cytokines partially mediate the causal pathway between food specific IgG antibodies, migraine, and migraine comorbidities.

Stress and low magnesemia are shown to be linked by previous research evidence. Additionally, Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has been shown to have stress-relieving and neuromodulating effects. This 1:1 randomised, investigator-blinded, parallel-group trial compared the effectiveness of magnesium alone and a combination of magnesium and vitamin B6 in participants with moderate to severe stress on mental and physical health. Participants consumed 300 mg magnesium lactate dihydrate daily with 30 mg Vitamin B6 or 300 mg magnesium lactate dihydrate daily for 8 weeks. Treatment with magnesium with or without vitamin B6 improved depression and anxiety, specifically a significant improvement observed after week four of the intervention. Quality of life improvements were sustained over 8 weeks among participants with magnesemia. Combined supplementation of magnesium and vitamin B6 increased the perceived capacity for physical activity in participants. Further robust research is needed to evaluate the combined effects of vitamin B6 and magnesium on stress-related mental health in people with magnesemia. However, healthcare professionals can use the results of this study to better understand magnesium and vitamin B6 supplementation's positive effects on stress-related mental health.
Abstract
Magnesium status and vitamin B6 intake have been linked to mental health and/or quality of life (QoL). In an 8-week Phase IV randomised controlled study in individuals with low magnesemia and severe/extremely severe stress but who were otherwise healthy, greater stress reduction was achieved with magnesium combined with vitamin B6 than with magnesium alone. We present a previously unreported secondary analysis of the effect of magnesium, with and without vitamin B6, on depression, anxiety, and QoL. Adults with Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-42) stress subscale score >18 were randomised 1:1 to magnesium + vitamin B6 combination (Magne B6® ; daily dose 300 and 30 mg, respectively) or magnesium alone (Magnespasmyl® ; daily dose 300 mg). Outcomes included changes from baseline in DASS-42 depression and anxiety scores, and QoL (Short Form-36 Health Survey). DASS-42 anxiety and depression scores significantly improved from baseline to week 8 with both treatments, particularly during the first 4 weeks. Improvement in QoL continued over 8 weeks. Participants' perceived capacity for physical activity in daily life showed greater improvement with magnesium + vitamin B6 than magnesium alone (Week 4). In conclusion, magnesium supplementation, with or without vitamin B6, could provide a meaningful clinical benefit in daily life for individuals with stress and low magnesemia.

There is growing evidence that gluten and FODMAPs, such as fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols, can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, inflammation, and immune responses in patients with celiac disease and irritable bowel syndrome. In addition, a high intake of gluten and FODMAPs may also be associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders. Thirteen studies were included in this systematic review to examine the relationship between gluten and FODMAP consumption and illnesses affecting the central nervous system. In addition, the studies examined the effects of potential dietary strategies that consider gluten and FODMAP intake on mental disorders, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, and autism spectrum disorders. Several possible mechanisms identified in this systematic review could contribute to neurological and psychiatric disorders, including the release of proinflammatory cytokines, immune responses, gut dysbiosis, intestinal permeability, and interactions between the gut-brain axis. In patients with fibromyalgia, celiac disease, and irritable bowel syndrome, avoiding or limiting gluten may reduce depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment. However, the effects of a low-FODMAP diet on the central nervous system are inconclusive. There is some evidence that gluten-free diets can improve cognition in schizophrenia patients. In addition, those with autism spectrum disorders may benefit from a gluten-free diet and a low-FODMAP diet. Further robust research is required to evaluate the beneficial effects of interventions that avoid or restrict the consumption of foods high in FODMAPs and gluten. However, healthcare professionals can use the results of this systematic review to understand the potential benefits of therapeutic interventions that consider the intake of FODMAPs and gluten on illnesses affecting the central nervous system and their possible mechanisms of action.
Abstract
Nowadays, gluten and FODMAP food components (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) are increasingly studied due to their possible relation with extraintestinal-associated conditions. In recent years, gluten-free diets (GFD) and low-FODMAP diets (LFD) are becoming more popular not only in order to avoid the food components that cause intolerances or allergies in some people, but also due to the direct influence of marketing movements or diet trends on feeding habits. Likewise, neurological and psychiatric diseases are currently of increasing importance in developed countries. For this reason, a bibliographic systematic review has been carried out to analyse whether there is a pathophysiological relationship between the dietary intake of gluten or FODMAPs with mental disorders. This review collects 13 clinical and randomized controlled trials, based on the PRISMA statement, which have been published in the last ten years. Based on these results, limiting or ruling out gluten or FODMAPs in the diet might be beneficial for symptoms such as depression, anxiety (7 out of 7 articles found any positive effect), or cognition deficiency (improvements in several cognition test measurements in one trial), and to a lesser extent for schizophrenia and the autism spectrum. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to obtain completely reliable conclusions.

Synbiotic, a mixture of prebiotics and probiotics, is known to improve neurotransmitter interactions, immune, inflammatory, and stress responses by modulating the gut microbial composition. It is also believed that physical activity plays an important role in the modulation of immune function and stress response. The purpose of this triple-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot study was to evaluate the health benefits of symbiotic intervention in fourteen sedentary students and thirteen soccer players, especially in terms of improving immunophysiological and metabolic parameters. The 300mg of symbiotic intervention contained Bifidobacterium lactis CBP-001010, Lactobacillus rhamnosus CNCM I-4036, Bifidobacterium longum ES1(109 colony-forming unit), and fructooligosaccharides (200 mg) plus 1.5 mg of zinc, 8.25 µg of selenium, 0.75 µg of vitamin, and maltodextrin. Following a one-month intervention with synbiotic formulation, soccer players showed improvements in anxiety, sleep quality and stress, a slight reduction in proinflammatory cytokine IL-1β, an exercise-induced significant increase in dopamine and a slight elevation of corticotropin-releasing hormone. For confirmation of results of this pilot study and to assess more significant effects of symbiotic intervention in athletes as well as in the general population, longer-term robust studies are required. The findings of this study can help healthcare professionals understand the extensive health benefits of synbiotic intervention and its relationship to physical activity.
Abstract
The main objective of this research was to carry out an experimental study, triple-blind, on the possible immunophysiological effects of a nutritional supplement (synbiotic, Gasteel Plus®, Heel España S.A.U.), containing a mixture of probiotic strains, such as Bifidobacterium lactis CBP-001010, Lactobacillus rhamnosus CNCM I-4036, and Bifidobacterium longum ES1, as well as the prebiotic fructooligosaccharides, on both professional athletes and sedentary people. The effects on some inflammatory/immune (IL-1β, IL-10, and immunoglobulin A) and stress (epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and cortisol) biomarkers were evaluated, determined by flow cytometer and ELISA. The effects on metabolic profile and physical activity, as well as on various parameters that could affect physical and mental health, were also evaluated via the use of accelerometry and validated questionnaires. The participants were professional soccer players in the Second Division B of the Spanish League and sedentary students of the same sex and age range. Both study groups were randomly divided into two groups: a control group-administered with placebo, and an experimental group-administered with the synbiotic. Each participant was evaluated at baseline, as well as after the intervention, which lasted one month. Only in the athlete group did the synbiotic intervention clearly improve objective physical activity and sleep quality, as well as perceived general health, stress, and anxiety levels. Furthermore, the synbiotic induced an immunophysiological bioregulatory effect, depending on the basal situation of each experimental group, particularly in the systemic levels of IL-1β (increased significantly only in the sedentary group), CRH (decreased significantly only in the sedentary group), and dopamine (increased significantly only in the athlete group). There were no significant differences between groups in the levels of immunoglobulin A or in the metabolic profile as a result of the intervention. It is concluded that synbiotic nutritional supplements can improve anxiety, stress, and sleep quality, particularly in sportspeople, which appears to be linked to an improved immuno-neuroendocrine response in which IL-1β, CRH, and dopamine are clearly involved.
