The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of daily wild blueberry (WBB) (poly)phenol consumption on vascular function and cognitive performance in healthy older individuals. This study was a randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled parallel design study. A total of 61 healthy older individuals were recruited and randomly assigned to one of the two arms; placebo intervention or blueberry intervention group. Results showed that long-term consumption of a dietary achievable amount of WBB enhanced vascular and cognitive function in older adults. Authors conclude that gut microbiota and vascular blood flow may play important roles in mediating the cognitive benefits shown by the consumption of (poly)phenol-rich foods.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that the intake of blueberry (poly)phenols is associated with improvements in vascular function and cognitive performance. Whether these cognitive effects are linked to increases in cerebral and vascular blood flow or changes in the gut microbiota is currently unknown. METHODS A double-blind, parallel randomized controlled trial was conducted in 61 healthy older individuals aged 65-80 y. Participants received either 26 g of freeze-dried wild blueberry (WBB) powder (302 mg anthocyanins) or a matched placebo (0 mg anthocyanins). Endothelial function measured by flow-mediated dilation (FMD), cognitive function, arterial stiffness, blood pressure (BP), cerebral blood flow (CBF), gut microbiome, and blood parameters were measured at baseline and 12 wk following daily consumption. Plasma and urinary (poly)phenol metabolites were analyzed using microelution solid-phase extraction coupled with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. RESULTS A significant increase in FMD and reduction in 24 h ambulatory systolic BP were found in the WBB group compared with the placebo group (0.86%; 95% CI: 0.56, 1.17, P < 0.001; -3.59 mmHg; 95% CI: -6.95, -0.23, P = 0.037; respectively). Enhanced immediate recall on the auditory verbal learning task, alongside better accuracy on a task-switch task was also found following WBB treatment compared with placebo (P < 0.05). Total 24 h urinary (poly)phenol excretion increased significantly in the WBB group compared with placebo. No changes in the CBF or gut microbiota composition were found. CONCLUSIONS Daily intake of WBB powder, equivalent to 178 g fresh weight, improves vascular and cognitive function and decreases 24 h ambulatory systolic BP in healthy older individuals. This suggests that WBB (poly)phenols may reduce future CVD risk in an older population and may improve episodic memory processes and executive functioning in older adults at risk for cognitive decline. Accumulating studies have demonstrated that there are strong correlations between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and gut microbiota. A nutritious diet composed of an adequate level of dietary fibres could provide enough carbohydrates for the gut microbiota to ferment, and the microbial metabolites could provide energy supply and regulate the immune function of the host. The aim of this study was to analyse the changes in gut microbiota, serum metabolism and emotional mood of patients with T2DM after consumption of a high-fibre diet. This study was a randomised, open-label, parallel-group clinical trial in T2DM patients with a 4-week treatment period. Seventeen patients clinically diagnosed with T2DM enrolled in the clinical trial and were randomly assigned into two groups: the control group (n = 8) or the intervention group (n = 9). Results showed that the high-fibre diet (compared to the control group): - improved glucose homeostasis and lipid metabolism of participants with T2DM; - decreased serum levels of inflammatory chemokines in participants with T2DM; - alleviated depression and anxiety symptoms, particularly by the uptake of more diverse carbohydrates in the diet in participants with T2DM; - enhanced the diversity of gut microbiota in the treatment group. Authors conclude that the dietary source of fibre demonstrated protective impacts on the gut ecosystem, and the alteration of the gut microbiota composition improved the glucose homeostasis in patients with T2DM.
Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) often had the problems of fecal microbiota dysbiosis, and were usually accompanied with psychiatric comorbidities (such as depression and anxiety). Here, we conducted a randomized clinical study to analyze the changes in gut microbiota, serum metabolism and emotional mood of patients with T2DM after consumption of a high-fiber diet. The glucose homeostasis of participants with T2DM was improved by the high-fiber diet, and the serum metabolome, systemic inflammation and psychiatric comorbidities were also altered. The increased abundances of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Akkermansias revealed that the proportions of beneficial gut microbes were enriched by the high-fiber diet, while the abundances of Desulfovibrio, Klebsiella and other opportunistic pathogens were decreased. Therefore, the current study demonstrated that the intestinal microbiota alterations which were influenced by the high-fiber diet could improve the serum metabolism and emotional mood of patients with T2DM.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterised by the presence of attention deficit, hyperactivity, and impulsivity as major symptoms, along with characteristics overlapping with other psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, defiant disorder, and learning disability. The aim of this study was to confirm the possibility of continuous application and utilisation of music therapy as an alternative to medicine for preventing and treating depression in children and adolescents with ADHD. This study was a randomised controlled trial which enrolled a total of 60 subjects. They were divided into an ADHD control group (n =30) and an ADHD music therapy group (n= 30) each on a 1:1 basis. Results showed that the application of music therapy as an alternative treatment for depression in ADHD children and adolescents showed positive neurophysiological and psychological effects. Authors conclude that music therapy may contribute to the establishment and spread of clinical foundations through active use in the medical field.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to determine the effect of music therapy as an alternative treatment on depression in children and adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by activating serotonin (5-HT) and improving stress coping ability. METHODS This study is designed based on randomization method. A total of 36 subjects participated in the experiment, consisting of an ADHD control group (n = 18) and ADHD music therapy group (n = 18). The ADHD control group received standard care, while the ADHD music therapy group received music therapy and standard care. The ADHD music therapy group received both active music therapy (improvisation) and receptive music therapy (music listening) for 50 minutes, twice a week, for 3 months: a total of 24 times. From a neurophysiological perspective, changes in depression and stress were tracked by measuring 5-HT secretion, cortisol expression, blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and CDI and DHQ psychological scales. RESULTS The ADHD music therapy group's 5-HT secretion increased (p < 0.001), whereas cortisol expression (p < 0.001), BP (p < 0.001) and HR (p < 0.001) decreased. The CDI and DHQ psychological scales also showed positive changes (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). However, the ADHD Con G's (who did not receive music therapy) 5-HT secretion did not increase, whereas cortisol expression, BP, and HR did not decrease. In addition, the CDI and DHQ psychological scales did not display positive changes. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, the application of music therapy as an alternative treatment for ADHD children and adolescents showed positive neurophysiological and psychological effects. Therefore, this study would like to propose a new alternative to medicine for preventing and treating depression through various uses of music therapy.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can cause impaired social–emotional interactions, impaired language and communication skills, repetitive or restrictive behaviours, and sometimes aggressive behaviour. The causes of ASD are complex and unclear. There is an increasing recognition that ASD might be associated with oxidative stress and the toxic build-up of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Glutathione acts as an antioxidant, a free radical scavenger and a detoxifying agent. The aim of this 12-week open-label pilot study was to investigate the tolerability and effectiveness of oral supplementation with OpitacTM glutathione as a treatment for patients with ASD. Six participants took part. Glutathione was generally well-tolerated except in the case of one subject. Some subjects showed improved total antioxidant capacity, and there was a mild improvement in the severity of ASD symptoms in 66.7% of the patients. However, none of the observed changes in the pre- and post-treatment oxidative laboratory markers and Aberrant Behaviour Checklist (ABC) scores were statistically significant. An imbalance in redox reactions is only one of the many factors contributing to ASD. Further studies are necessary to investigate the other factors.
Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a type of neurodevelopmental disorder that has been diagnosed in an increasing number of children around the world. The existing data suggest that early diagnosis and intervention can improve ASD outcomes. The causes of ASD remain complex and unclear, and there are currently no clinical biomarkers for autism spectrum disorder. There is an increasing recognition that ASD might be associated with oxidative stress through several mechanisms including abnormal metabolism (lipid peroxidation) and the toxic buildup of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Glutathione acts as an antioxidant, a free radical scavenger and a detoxifying agent. This open-label pilot study investigates the tolerability and effectiveness of oral supplementation with OpitacTM gluthathione as a treatment for patients with ASD. The various aspects of glutathione OpitacTM glutathione bioavailability were examined when administered by oral routes. The absorption of glutathione from the gastrointestinal tract has been recently investigated. The results of this case series suggest that oral glutathione supplementation may improve oxidative markers, but this does not necessarily translate to the observed clinical improvement of subjects with ASD. The study reports a good safety profile of glutathione use, with stomach upset reported in four out of six subjects. This article discusses the role of the gut microbiome and redox balance in ASD and notes that a high baseline oxidative burden may make some patients poor responders to glutathione supplementation. In conclusion, an imbalance in redox reactions is only one of the many factors contributing to ASD, and further studies are necessary to investigate other factors, such as impaired neurotransmission, immune dysregulation in the brain, and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Gut microbiota is defined by all the beneficial microorganisms that live and grow in the intestine. It is set up from birth and evolves according to different factors. Today, the microbiota is considered a therapeutic revolution, where researchers use its enrichment to prevent or treat certain diseases including obesity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a probiotic supplement containing Bifidobacteruim, Lactobacillus strains and a prebiotic supplement by carob on the changes in body composition and metabolic biomarkers in subjects with obesity. This study was a prospective interventional study. Forty-five patients were recruited on their first visit to the obesity unit and were randomly assigned to three groups. All participants were enrolled in the weight loss program at the beginning of the study and followed a low-carbohydrate, reduced-energy intake eating plan. Results showed that a low-carbohydrate, restricted-energy diet effectively showed positive results in terms of weight loss, metabolic parameters and obesity-related psychiatric disorders in obese individuals. Authors concluded that prebiotics and probiotics supplementation with lifestyle measures can be taken into consideration for the management of obesity.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION The management of obesity is difficult with many failures of lifestyle measures, hence the need to broaden the range of treatments prescribed. The aim of our work was to study the influence of pre and probiotics on weight loss psychological profile and metabolic parameters in obese patients. METHODS It is a clinical trial involving 45 obese patients, recruited from the Obesity Unit of the National Institute of Nutrition between March and August 2022 divided into three groups: diet only (low-carbohydrate and reduced energy diet), prebiotics (30 g of carob/day) and probiotics (one tablet containing Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus helveticus, Lactococcus lactis, Streptococcus thermophilus/day). The three groups were matched for age, sex and BMI. Patients were seen after 1 month from the intervention. Anthropometric measures, biological parameters, dietary survey and psychological scores were performed. RESULTS The average age of our population was 48.73 ± 7.7 years, with a female predominance. All three groups showed a significant decrease in weight, BMI and waist circumference with p < .05. Only the prebiotic and probiotic group showed a significant decrease in fat mass (p = .001) and a significant increase in muscle strength with p = .008 and .004, but the differences were not significant between the three groups. Our results showed also a significant decrease in insulinemia and HOMA-IR in the prebiotic group compared to the diet-alone group (p = .03; p = .012) and the probiotic group showed a significant decrease in fasting blood glucose compared to the diet alone group (p = .02). A significant improvement in sleep quality was noted in the prebiotic group (p = .02), with a significant decrease in depression, anxiety and stress in all three groups. CONCLUSIONS The prescription of prebiotics and probiotics with the lifestyle measures seems interesting for the management of obesity especially if it is sarcopenic, in addition to the improvement of metabolic parameters and obesity-related psychiatric disorders.

Despite the increased awareness and the improvements in medical management of hypothyroidism; depression, mood disturbance and poor health-related quality of life (QoL) is common among hypothyroid patients. Synbiotics have been advocated as being beneficial to patients with metabolic diseases. Synbiotics are a mixture of probiotics and prebiotics that beneficially affect the host by improving the survival and stimulating the growth of advantageous and health promoting microbial species in the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study was to examine whether synbiotic supplementation could enhance depression, QoL, and blood pressure, as well as thyroid hormones in hypothyroid patients. This study is a 10-week parallel design randomised placebo-controlled trial. Participants – adults with hypothyroidism - were randomly assigned to the synbiotic (n = 28) or the placebo (n = 28) group. Results show that following 10 weeks supplementation with synbiotics (500 mg of 10⁹ CFU/g probiotics plus fructo-oligosaccharide) in comparison to placebo does not affect serum thyroid stimulating hormone level and depression. However, it significantly improved blood pressure levels and various domains and areas of QoL. Authors conclude that further clinical trials are needed to assess the effectiveness of a synbiotic supplementation along with the current routine treatment for hypothyroid patients.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE We hypothesize that synbiotic supplementation could modulate the intestinal microbiota and subsequently, improve the condition of hypothyroid patients. METHODS Fifty-six adult hypothyroid patients were recruited to this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial. The intervention was 10 weeks of synbiotic (500 mg of 109 CFU/g probiotics plus fructo-oligosaccharide, n = 28) compared to placebo (lactose, magnesium stearate, talc, and silicon dioxide, n = 28). Randomization and allocation to trial groups were carried out using random number sequences drawn from https://sealedenvelope.com/. Primary outcomes were serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4), and secondary outcomes were depression, quality of life, and blood pressure (BP). P-values< 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS Analysis on 51 patients who completed the trial showed that TSH and depression (p> 0.05) did not change significantly, while serum FT4 significantly increased in both groups (p = 0.03 and p = 0.02 in symbiotic and placebo respectively). A significant decrease in systolic BP occurred only in the synbiotic group (p = 0.05). Significant improvements occurred regarding different domains and areas of quality of life in the crude and adjusted analysis, including perceived mental health (p = 0.02), bodily pain (p = 0.02), general health perception (p = 0.002), and wellbeing (p = 0.002), which were significantly higher in the synbiotic group. CONCLUSIONS Ten-week supplementation with synbiotic had no favorable effect on depression and TSH, but it improved blood pressure and quality of life in patients with hypothyroidism. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is often thought of as being solely a mood disorder. However, several studies have shown that sufferers can also experience decreased brain function such as memory loss and poor attention. Current therapies for MDD focus on the balancing of mood and leaves the problem of reduced brain function unattended. The gut microbiota has recently been shown to influence brain function and altered gut microbiota composition has been seen in individuals with MDD. Targeting the gut microbiota may therefore represent a novel target for MDD treatments. This secondary analysis of a randomised control trial aimed to determine whether a probiotic multistrain supplement could improve brain function in 60 individuals with depression. The results showed that probiotics improved the brain function in two different ways, the immediate recall of words, and the improvement of decreased neural function in the hippocampal part of the brain, which has been associated with MDD. It was concluded that probiotic supplementation can enhance verbal episodic memory and improve neural function associated with impaired brain function in MDD. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand that the health of the gut microbiota can have an influence on brain function and that probiotics may help individuals with MDD who are suffering from poorer memory.
Abstract
BACKGROUND In major depressive disorder (MDD), cognitive dysfunctions strongly contribute to functional impairments but are barely addressed in current therapies. Novel treatment strategies addressing cognitive symptoms in depression are needed. As the gut microbiota-brain axis is linked to depression and cognition, we investigated the effect of a 4-week high-dose probiotic supplementation on cognitive symptoms in depression. METHODS This randomized controlled trial included 60 patients with MDD, of whom 43 entered modified intention-to-treat analysis. A probiotic supplement or indistinguishable placebo containing maltose was administered over 31 days in addition to treatment as usual for depression. Participant scores on the Verbal Learning Memory Test (VLMT), Corsi Block Tapping Test, and both Trail Making Test versions as well as brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels were assessed at 3 different time points: before, immediately after and 4 weeks after intervention. Additionally, brain activation changes during working memory processing were investigated before and immediately after intervention. RESULTS We found a significantly improved immediate recall in the VLMT in the probiotic group immediately after intervention, and a trend for a time × group interaction considering all time points. Furthermore, we found a time × group interaction in hippocampus activation during working memory processing, revealing a remediated hippocampus function in the probiotic group. Other measures did not reveal significant changes. LIMITATIONS The modest sample size resulting from our exclusion of low-compliant cases should be considered. CONCLUSION Additional probiotic supplementation enhances verbal episodic memory and affects neural mechanisms underlying impaired cognition in MDD. The present findings support the importance of the gut microbiota-brain axis in MDD and emphasize the potential of microbiota-related regimens to treat cognitive symptoms in depression. In patients with severe mental disorders, motivation to follow a healthy diet and lifestyle might be low. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables may improve metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular health and mental health. This randomised community-based clinical trial included seventy-four patients with severe mental disorders out of which 37.8% of the participants had schizophrenia or related disorders, 29.7% had bipolar disorder, 25.7% had depressive disorder, 4.1% had a personality disorder, and 2.7% had obsessive-compulsive disorder. The intervention group followed a four-week food education programme (DIETMENT) aimed at promoting fruit and vegetable consumption. A five-month post-intervention analysis showed no increase in participants diagnosed with metabolic syndrome in the intervention group, but an increase in participants diagnosed with metabolic syndrome in the control group. There was a significant reduction in the glomerular filtrate rate in the intervention group. In patients with severe mental disorders, more studies should be conducted to examine the health-promoting effects of adding more fruits and vegetables to the diet. Health professionals can use the results of this study to understand how fruits and vegetables contribute to reducing metabolic syndrome and heart disease risk.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to determine the metabolic impact of a nutrition education program on metabolic parameters and the presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS). RESULTS Seventy-four patients were included (mean age, 48.7 years [Standard deviation, SD: 10.8], 55.4% men). The diagnoses of SMD were 37.8% schizophrenia and related disorders; 29.7% bipolar disorder; 25.7% depressive disorder; 4.1% personality disorders; and 2.7% obsessive compulsive disorders. Thirty-seven individuals were distributed in both the intervention group (IG) and the control group (CG). In the IG the presence of MetS was 56.3% and in the CG 46.7%, with no statistically significant difference (p = 0.309). At the end of the study, glomerular filtrate decreased in the IG, body mass index and abdominal perimeter increased in both groups, and there were no changes in metabolic parameters between the groups. Between the baseline and the end of the study, there was no increase in the number of patients diagnosed with MetS (14 at both points); and in the CG the increase was from 8 to 12 (p = 0.005). An intervention based on fruit and vegetable intake could prevent progression to MetS in individuals with SMD, decreasing the likelihood of cardiovascular disease. Trial registration The trial was retrospectively registered on International Standard Randomised Controlled Trial Number (ISRCTN) Register on 11 March 2022 (ISRCTN12024347).

The majority of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients relate their symptoms to intake of certain foods. The gut microenvironment, where microbiota, food components and the nervous system interact, is suggested to play a key role in gastrointestinal (GI) symptom generation in a subset of IBS patients. The main aim of this study was to assess and compare the efficacy of the gluten-free and gluten-containing diets in terms of effects on GI symptoms in IBS patients. Secondary aims where to identify the putative link between gut microenvironment and the diets´ effect on GI symptoms, and to identify potential predictors of clinical response to the gluten-free diet. This study is a single-centre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, cross-over trial. Adult sex- and age-matched IBS patients (n=20) and healthy controls (HC) (n=21) were recruited, randomised and challenged with gluten (14 g/day) and rice flour, both for 2 weeks, while adhering to a strict gluten-free diet. Results indicate that a gluten-free diet may affect IBS symptoms in general, and bowel habits in a subset of IBS patients. The gluten-free diet has distinct effect on the gut microenvironment in IBS patients who respond favourably to gluten reduction. Authors conclude that the gut microenvironment may be of importance in the clinical response to the gluten-free diet in IBS, and future studies should aim to further assess these factors in relation to clinical response to the gluten-free diet.
Abstract
BACKGROUND A gluten-free diet reduces symptoms in some patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) through unclear mechanisms. AIMS To assess the effects of gluten-free versus gluten-containing diet on symptoms and the gut microenvironment, and to identify predictors of response to the gluten-free diet in IBS METHODS Twenty patients with IBS and 18 healthy controls (HC) followed a gluten-free diet during two 14-day intervention periods where they sprinkled either gluten (14 g/day) or rice flour powder over their meals. Primary outcomes included effects of the interventions on IBS symptoms (IBS-SSS) and bowel habits. Secondary outcomes included effects of gluten-free diet on faecal microbiota and metabolite profile. RESULTS IBS symptoms improved during the gluten-free (p = 0.02), but not the gluten-containing period, with no difference between the interventions. IBS patients reported fewer loose stools during the gluten-free intervention (p = 0.01). Patients with IBS and HC presented distinct metabolite profiles based on the effects of the gluten-free diet (p < 0.001). True responders (reduced IBS-SSS by ≥50 solely after gluten-free period) and non-responders were discriminated based on the effects of the gluten-free diet on the microbiota (p < 0.01) and metabolite profiles (p < 0.001). The response to the gluten-free diet could be predicted by the metabolite profile before the intervention (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS A gluten-free diet may influence symptoms in a subset of patients with IBS, with a particular effect on bowel habits. A gluten-free diet seems to impact the gut microenvironment. Psychobiotic describe any exogenous intervention that leads to a bacterially mediated impact on the brain. Probiotics and prebiotics have shown promising results as psychobiotic agents in both animal and human studies. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of a whole diet psychobiotic approach to modulate the microbiota composition and function, affect responses to and feelings of stress and improve mood in a healthy population. This study is a single-blind, randomized, controlled study which recruited healthy adult (male and female) participants with poor dietary habits, aged 18–59 years. Participants were block randomized (block of 4, stratified by gender) into either intervention or control group using randomly permuted blocks and were instructed to follow their respective diet for 4 weeks. Results show that a short term psychobiotic dietary intervention improved perceived stress in a healthy population, while eliciting specific metabolic changes in the gut microbiota. Authors conclude that underlying microbial influences need to be investigated and future preclinical experiments are required to explore causality and decipher mechanistic pathways.

Summary Review:
This RCT explored the impact of a psychobiotic diet, compared to a control diet, on perceived stress, sleep and gut microbiota.
A high psychobiotic diet is one high in prebiotic and fermented foods. In this study, a psychobiotic diet included daily recommended consumption and servings of the following:
- High prebiotic fruit & veg (6-8)
- Grains (5-8)
- Fermented foods (2-3)
- Legumes (3-4 per week)
Methodology:
- A single-blind, randomised, controlled study
- 45 healthy adults (18-59 years) with poor dietary habits
- Sample size determined by previous microbiome research - target not reached due to introduction of covid restrictrictions
- Active intervention (n=24) received dietitian advice to follow psychobitoic diet
- Control intervention (n=21) received dietitian advice largely based on the Irish Healthy Eating Guidelines food pyramid

Abstract
The impact of diet on the microbiota composition and the role of diet in supporting optimal mental health have received much attention in the last decade. However, whether whole dietary approaches can exert psychobiotic effects is largely understudied. Thus, we investigated the influence of a psychobiotic diet (high in prebiotic and fermented foods) on the microbial profile and function as well as on mental health outcomes in a healthy human population. Forty-five adults were randomized into either a psychobiotic (n = 24) or control (n = 21) diet for 4 weeks. Fecal microbiota composition and function was characterized using shotgun sequencing. Stress, overall health and diet were assessed using validated questionnaires. Metabolic profiling of plasma, urine and fecal samples was performed. Intervention with a psychobiotic diet resulted in reductions of perceived stress (32% in diet vs. 17% in control group), but not between groups. Similarly, biological marker of stress were not affected. Additionally, higher adherence to the diet resulted in stronger decreases in perceived stress. While the dietary intervention elicited only subtle changes in microbial composition and function, significant changes in the level of 40 specific fecal lipids and urinary tryptophan metabolites were observed. Lastly, microbial volatility was linked to greater changes in perceived stress scores in those on the psychobiotic diet. These results highlight that dietary approaches can be used to reduce perceived stress in a human cohort. Using microbiota-targeted diets to positively modulate gut-brain communication holds possibilities for the reduction of stress and stress-associated disorders, but additional research is warranted to investigate underlying mechanisms, including the role of the microbiota.
