Depression can considerably impair daily function. However, although medications and psychological therapy can be effective in treating depression, non‐compliance with and/or side effects of antidepressants are common. Thus, identifying alternative or adjunctive therapies to prevent or treat depression may help to overcome some limitations of current management strategies. The aim of this study was to examine whether supplementing older Australians with monthly doses of 60,000 IU of vitamin D3 for 5 years would reduce depressive symptoms or incidence of antidepressant use, as a surrogate for a formal diagnosis of depression. This study used data from the D‐Health Trial, a large population‐based randomised controlled trial. Authors randomly selected potential participants aged between 60 and 79 years from the Australian Commonwealth Electoral Roll. The participants who accepted the invitation were randomly allocated to either 60,000 IU of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) or placebo in a 1:1 ratio. Results show that there wasn’t an overall benefit of monthly supplementation with 60,000 IU of vitamin D for up to 5 years on measures of depression. However, pre‐specified subgroup analyses suggested a potential beneficial effect of vitamin D supplementation in people taking antidepressants at baseline or with lower predicted baseline vitamin D3 concentration. However there was an unfavourable effect in participants with a body mass index <25 kg/m2 or those with higher predicted baseline vitamin D3 concentration. Authors conclude that routine supplementation with vitamin D in populations with a low prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is unlikely to be of benefit for depression and may cause harm in people with low body mass index or normal vitamin D status.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate whether vitamin D supplementation reduces depressive symptoms and incidence of antidepressant use. METHODS We used data from the D-Health Trial (N = 21,315), a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of monthly vitamin D3 for the prevention of all-cause mortality. Participants were Australians aged 60-84 years. Participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) at 1, 2 and 5 years after randomization to measure depressive symptoms; national prescribing records were used to capture antidepressant use. We used mixed models and survival models. RESULTS Analyses of PHQ-9 scores included 20,487 participants (mean age 69·3 years, 46% women); the mean difference (MD) in PHQ-9 score (vitamin D vs. placebo) was 0·02 (95% CI -0·06, 0·11). There was negligible difference in the prevalence of clinically relevant depression (PHQ-9 score ≥10) (odds ratio 0·99; 95% CI 0·90, 1·08). We included 16,670 participants in the analyses of incident antidepressant use (mean age 69·4 years, 43% women). Incidence of antidepressant use was similar between the groups (hazard ratio [HR] 1·04; 95% CI 0·96, 1·12). In subgroup analyses, vitamin D improved PHQ-9 scores in those taking antidepressants at baseline (MD -0·25; 95% CI -0·49, -0·01; p-interaction = 0·02). It decreased risk of antidepressant use in participants with predicted 25(OH)D concentration <50 nmol/L (HR 0·88; 95% CI 0·75, 1·02; p-interaction = 0·01) and increased risk in those with predicted 25(OH)D ≥ 50 nmol/L (HR 1·10; 95% CI 1·01, 1·20). CONCLUSION Monthly supplementation with high-dose vitamin D3 was not of benefit for measures of depression overall, but there was some evidence of benefit in subgroup analyses. Migraine is considered as an intense unilateral throbbing headache, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia and phonophobia, which can be exacerbated by routine physical activity. It has been shown that cytokines levels are altered in migraineurs. Cytokines are inflammatory mediators that can stimulate calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) [amino acid] transcription. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of soy isoflavones supplementation on migraine headache characteristics, mental status, quality of life and CGRP concentration in adult women with migraine. This study is a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinic trial. Participants (n=88 women) were randomly assigned to one of the two groups: intervention or placebo groups (1:1). Patients in the intervention group received one tablet containing 50 mg isoflavones. Results indicate that consumption of 50 mg/day soy isoflavones supplementation for 8 weeks led to significant reduction in frequency, duration, and clinical indices of migraine and improved quality of life and CGRP levels. However, severity of migraine headache and mental status including depression, stress and anxiety were not affected by supplementation. Authors conclude that even though their findings were promising, further studies focusing on the mental status dimensions including depression, stress and anxiety are needed.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Literature suggests a relationship between estrogen levels and migraine headache pathogenesis. However, the effect of soy isoflavones on migraine characteristic remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of soy isoflavones on migraine characteristics and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) levels in women with migraine. METHODS Eighty-three participants completed a randomized double-blind controlled trial, receiving 50 mg per day soy isoflavones or placebo supplementation for 8 weeks. Migraine severity, migraine days per month, frequency and duration of attacks, mental status, quality of life and serum CGRP levels were measured at baseline and the end of the intervention. Bivariate comparison and intention-to-treat (ITT) were used for analysis. RESULTS Soy isoflavones intake resulted in a significant decrease in mean frequency (-2.36 vs -0.43, P < 0.001), duration (-2.50 vs -0.02, P < 0.001) of migraine attacks and CGRP level (-12.18 ng/l vs -8.62, P = 0.002) in compared to placebo group. Also, a significant improvement was found in quality of life (16.76 vs 2.52, P < 0.001). Although, reduction in the migraine severity and mental status did not reach a statistically significant level (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION soy isoflavones supplementation may be considered as a complementary treatment for women with migraine to improve migraine characteristics and reduce the burden of disease.

Introduction
OSA represents one of the most common and serious sleep-related breathing disorders, with a high worldwide prevalence of almost 1 billion people. OSA has numerous well-established cardiometabolic consequences.
The authors highlight that weight loss is essential for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) management. However, the optimal degree of weight loss for improving OSA severity or eliminating sleep-disordered breathing has not been extensively studied. The aim of this study was to explore the dose-response relationship between the degree of weight loss and improvements in OSA severity.
Methods
This is a secondary analysis of the Mediterranean diet/lifestyle Intervention for the Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (MIMOSA) study. This study was designed as a single-center, single-blind, parallel, randomised, controlled clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a weight-loss Mediterranean dietary/lifestyle intervention on managing OSA.
This 6-month long clinical trial included 180 adult, overweight/obese moderate-to-severe OSA patients (45 patients per study group plus a 29% dropout rate). All patients were prescribed the standard of care continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy and were randomised to 3 arms: standard care; Mediterranean diet; Mediterranean lifestyle
Based on percent change in weight at 6 months, participants were categorised into a weight-stable/gain (WS/GG) group or one of 3 weight-loss groups (WLG): < 5%WLG; 5%–10%WLG; ≥ 10%WLG. Polysomnographic data and OSA symptoms were also evaluated preintervention and postintervention.
Results
Results confirm a dose-response relationship between the degree of weight loss achieved through a dietary/lifestyle intervention and improvements in OSA severity.
- Respiratory events and oximetry indices improved only in patients who lost weight. Improvements were proportional to the degree of weight loss.
- Median percent change in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was −11.7%, − 37.9%, and − 49.3% in the < 5%WLG, 5%–10%WLG, and ≥ 10%WLG, respectively (P < .001).
- Compared to the WS/GG, the age-, sex-, baseline-, and CPAP use–adjusted relative risk (95% confidence interval) of severe OSA (AHI ≥ 30 events/h) was 0.45 (0.23–0.87) in the 5%–10%WLG and 0.32 (0.17–0.64) in the ≥ 10%WLG; the risk was also lower in the ≥ 10%WLG vs the < 5%WLG (0.42 [0.22–0.82]).
- Insomnia and daytime sleepiness also improved more in participants exhibiting ≥ 5% weight loss.

Conclusions
The authors conclude that even a < 5% weight loss was sufficient for improvements in respiratory events and oximetry indices, but the prevalence of severe OSA reduced only after a ≥ 5% weight loss, and patients achieving a ≥ 10% weight loss exhibited the greatest benefits compared to weight-stable/gain patients.

These findings might be useful for Nutritional Therapists and Clinical Practitioners:
- Clinicians should aim for a ≥ 5% weight loss, and ideally a ≥ 10% weight loss, to achieve clinically meaningful reductions in OSA severity.
- Improvements after weight loss were significant even though a healthy body weight was not achieved.
Considerations for future research:
- The study sample consisted of predominantly male, overweight, otherwise healthy patients with moderate-to-severe OSA. Therefore, findings cannot be generalised to the whole OSA population and further research is required with broader, diverse, study samples.
- 6 months is a short duration period, therefore longer trials are required.
- Self-reported CPAP use by participants is a limitation of this study. Further robust analysis methods should be considered for future trials.
- Participants were advised to abstain from CPAP therapy for 2 days prior to the follow-up PSG but this was not evaluated or confirmed in this study and should be in future research.

Diet is one of the critical lifestyle factors for physical and mental well-being throughout the life span, including later life. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of probiotics consumption on intestinal and brain health in elders over the age of 65. This study is a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre trial. All participants, study coordinators, and researchers were blinded throughout the entire study. Sixty-three participants were randomized, with 31 and 32 subjects in the placebo and probiotics group, respectively. Results demonstrate that probiotics have system-wide effects on the gut–brain axis in healthy community-dwelling older adults by promoting cognitive and mental health and changing the gut microbial composition. Authors conclude that their findings provide evidence that probiotics have health-promoting properties as part of a healthy diet in the general population of independently living older adults.
Abstract
Probiotics have been proposed to ameliorate cognitive impairment and depressive disorder via the gut-brain axis in patients and experimental animal models. However, the beneficial role of probiotics in brain functions of healthy older adults remains unclear. Therefore, a randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled multicenter trial was conducted to determine the effects of probiotics on cognition and mood in community-dwelling older adults. Sixty-three healthy elders (≥65 years) consumed either placebo or probiotics containing Bifidobacterium bifidum BGN4 and Bifidobacterium longum BORI for 12 weeks. The gut microbiota was analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing and bioinformatics. Brain functions were measured using the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's disease, Satisfaction with life scale, stress questionnaire, Geriatric depression scale, and Positive affect and negative affect schedule. Blood brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Relative abundance of inflammation-causing gut bacteria was significantly reduced at Week 12 in the probiotics group (p < .05). The probiotics group showed greater improvement in mental flexibility test and stress score than the placebo group (p < .05). Contrary to placebo, probiotics significantly increased serum BDNF level (p < .05). Notably, the gut microbes significantly shifted by probiotics (Eubacterium and Clostridiales) showed significant negative correlation with serum BDNF level only in the probiotics group (RS = -0.37, RS = -0.39, p < .05). In conclusion, probiotics promote mental flexibility and alleviate stress in healthy older adults, along with causing changes in gut microbiota. These results provide evidence supporting health-promoting properties of probiotics as a part of healthy diet in the older adults.

Migraine is a chronic neurovascular disorder. Patients with this disorder suffer from severe headaches and also nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and phonophobia during a migraine attack. Several supplementary treatments have been suggested for the management of migraine symptoms. Among these methods, there is the supplementation with micronutrients. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of zinc supplementation on characteristics of migraine attacks in migraine patients. This study is a double-blind randomized clinical trial which included migraine patients, with an age range between 20 and 60 years. Patients were stratified based on age (20–40 and 40–60 years), gender (male and female), and body mass index (18.5–24.9 and 25–30) into different blocks. Then, they were randomly allocated to the intervention or control groups. Results show that when compared to the placebo group, zinc supplementation resulted in a significant reduction in headache severity and migraine attacks frequency. However, the effect on headache severity became statistically non-significant when baseline values of headache severity and potential confounders were taken into account. Authors conclude that zinc supplementation was beneficial for migraine attack frequency but not for migraine attack duration and headache daily results.

Zinc, an essential trace mineral, may prove beneficial as a supplement to reduce migraine symptoms and frequency possibly due to its effects on the nervous system and its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity..
This double blind randomised clinical trial analysed the effects of 220mg of zinc sulphate (50mg of elemental zinc) combined with a routine migraine treatment versus a control group receiving a placebo and the routine treatment on symptoms of migraine attacks. The study duration was 8 weeks occurring from January 2016 to April 2016. Each group consisted of 40 participants between the ages of 20 and 60 with >5 years of migraines or migraine symptoms.
When compared to the placebo group, zinc supplementation demonstrated:
- A reduction in headache severity (− 1.75 ± 1.79 vs. -0.80 ± 1.57; P = 0.01). This result became statistically non-significant when the analysis was adjusted for potential confounders and baseline values of headache severity.
- A reduction in migraine attacks frequency (− 2.55 ± 4.32 vs. -0.42 ± 4.24; P = 0.02).
Clinical practice applications:
This randomised controlled trial highlights that zinc supplementation combined with routine migraine treatment (200/500 mg sodium valproate (such as Depakin), 50/100 mg sumatriptan, or 1 mg ergotamine) may assist in the reduction of migraine attack frequency amongst migraine sufferers within 8 weeks.
Compliance rate for this study was very high at 100% and there were no adverse effects reported suggesting a potentially safe and convenient treatment for migraine sufferers.
Considerations for future research:
- Further trials with better dietary controls would be useful to eliminate potential confounders.
- Use of CONSORT guidelines for reporting randomised trials would strengthen research reporting.
- Analysis of biomarkers may assist in identifying the mechanisms in which zinc may relieve migraine symptoms..
- Larger randomised controlled trials with increased sample sizes and longer durations are needed in order to definitively determine the effect of zinc supplementation on migraine attacks and any differences between genders.
- Additional studies trialling various zinc dosages and forms may provide insight into an optimal zinc dose and form for migraine attacks.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Observational studies have shown a link between zinc deficiency and migraine headaches. We aimed to examine the effect of zinc supplementation on the characteristics of migraine attacks in patients with migraine. METHODS This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 80 patients with migraine. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either zinc sulfate (220 mg/d zinc sulfate) or placebo (lactose) for 8 weeks. Anthropometric measures, serum zinc concentrations, and characteristics of migraine attacks (headache severity, frequency and duration of migraine attacks, and headache daily results) were assessed at baseline and end of the trial. RESULTS Compared with the placebo, zinc supplementation resulted in a significant reduction in headache severity (- 1.75 ± 1.79 vs. -0.80 ± 1.57; P = 0.01) and migraine attacks frequency (- 2.55 ± 4.32 vs. -0.42 ± 4.24; P = 0.02) in migraine patients. However, the observed reduction for headache severity became statistically non-significant when the analysis was adjusted for potential confounders and baseline values of headache severity. Other characteristics of migraine attacks including the duration of attacks and headache daily results were not altered following zinc supplementation either before or after controlling for covariates. CONCLUSION Zinc supplementation had a beneficial effect on the frequency of migraine attacks in migraine patients. Acceptance and commitment therapy is one promising method in changing behaviour towards a person’s own value and goals. It aims to strengthen positive psychological processes related to commitment, behaviour change, mindfulness, and acceptance, which can be applied to promote healthy behaviour pattern. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of acceptance and commitment therapy intervention delivered in two different ways i.e., via face-to-face group sessions and via mobile app, on reported eating behaviour and diet quality among adults with psychological distress and overweight or obesity. The study is a secondary analysis of the parallel-arm randomised controlled trial in which 3 different psychological interventions were studied. 219 individuals participated in the study with a mean body mass index of 31.3kg/m2, and a mean age of 49.5 years. Results indicate that acceptance and commitment therapy-based were able to change the reasons for eating from emotional or environmental triggers towards hunger and satiety cues, increase the acceptance of a variety of foods, and help the individual to perceive healthy eating more consistently. Authors conclude that acceptance and commitment therapy-based interventions delivered in the face-to-face group sessions or by the Mobile app showed beneficial effects on several aspects of eating behaviour.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Internal motivation and good psychological capabilities are important factors in successful eating-related behavior change. Thus, we investigated whether general acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) affects reported eating behavior and diet quality and whether baseline perceived stress moderates the intervention effects. METHODS Secondary analysis of unblinded randomized controlled trial in three Finnish cities. Working-aged adults with psychological distress and overweight or obesity in three parallel groups: (1) ACT-based Face-to-face (n = 70; six group sessions led by a psychologist), (2) ACT-based Mobile (n = 78; one group session and mobile app), and (3) Control (n = 71; only the measurements). At baseline, the participants' (n = 219, 85% females) mean body mass index was 31.3 kg/m2 (SD = 2.9), and mean age was 49.5 years (SD = 7.4). The measurements conducted before the 8-week intervention period (baseline), 10 weeks after the baseline (post-intervention), and 36 weeks after the baseline (follow-up) included clinical measurements, questionnaires of eating behavior (IES-1, TFEQ-R18, HTAS, ecSI 2.0, REBS), diet quality (IDQ), alcohol consumption (AUDIT-C), perceived stress (PSS), and 48-h dietary recall. Hierarchical linear modeling (Wald test) was used to analyze the differences in changes between groups. RESULTS Group x time interactions showed that the subcomponent of intuitive eating (IES-1), i.e., Eating for physical rather than emotional reasons, increased in both ACT-based groups (p = .019); the subcomponent of TFEQ-R18, i.e., Uncontrolled eating, decreased in the Face-to-face group (p = .020); the subcomponent of health and taste attitudes (HTAS), i.e., Using food as a reward, decreased in the Mobile group (p = .048); and both subcomponent of eating competence (ecSI 2.0), i.e., Food acceptance (p = .048), and two subcomponents of regulation of eating behavior (REBS), i.e., Integrated and Identified regulation (p = .003, p = .023, respectively), increased in the Face-to-face group. Baseline perceived stress did not moderate effects on these particular features of eating behavior from baseline to follow-up. No statistically significant effects were found for dietary measures. CONCLUSIONS ACT-based interventions, delivered in group sessions or by mobile app, showed beneficial effects on reported eating behavior. Beneficial effects on eating behavior were, however, not accompanied by parallel changes in diet, which suggests that ACT-based interventions should include nutritional counseling if changes in diet are targeted. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, affecting nearly 34 million people worldwide. It has been estimated that one in every three cases of AD may be attributable to diet and lifestyle factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of lifestyle and vascular-related risk factors for AD. Researchers studied the brain scans of 116 healthy adults aged 30-60 years. They collected information on factors related to lifestyle, such as diet, physical activity and intellectual enrichment. They also looked at markers for vascular risk such as body mass index (BMI), cholesterol and homocysteine, as well as cognitive function. The researchers found that a Mediterranean-style diet and good insulin sensitivity were both associated with a healthier brain structure. A better score for intellectual enrichment and lower BMI were both associated with better cognition. They concluded that adopting a Mediterranean-style diet and maintaining a healthy weight might reduce the risk of developing AD.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of lifestyle and vascular-related risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD) on in vivo MRI-based brain atrophy in asymptomatic young to middle-aged adults. DESIGN Cross-sectional, observational. SETTING Broader New York City area. Two research centres affiliated with the Alzheimer's disease Core Center at New York University School of Medicine. PARTICIPANTS We studied 116 cognitively normal healthy research participants aged 30-60 years, who completed a three-dimensional T1-weighted volumetric MRI and had lifestyle (diet, physical activity and intellectual enrichment), vascular risk (overweight, hypertension, insulin resistance, elevated cholesterol and homocysteine) and cognition (memory, executive function, language) data. Estimates of cortical thickness for entorhinal (EC), posterior cingulate, orbitofrontal, inferior and middle temporal cortex were obtained by use of automated segmentation tools. We applied confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling to evaluate the associations between lifestyle, vascular risk, brain and cognition. RESULTS Adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet (MeDi) and insulin sensitivity were both positively associated with MRI-based cortical thickness (diet: βs≥0.26, insulin sensitivity βs≥0.58, P≤0.008). After accounting for vascular risk, EC in turn explained variance in memory (P≤0.001). None of the other lifestyle and vascular risk variables were associated with brain thickness. In addition, the path associations between intellectual enrichment and better cognition were significant (βs≥0.25 P≤0.001), as were those between overweight and lower cognition (βs≥-0.22, P≤0.01). CONCLUSIONS In cognitively normal middle-aged adults, MeDi and insulin sensitivity explained cortical thickness in key brain regions for AD, and EC thickness predicted memory performance in turn. Intellectual activity and overweight were associated with cognitive performance through different pathways. Our findings support further investigation of lifestyle and vascular risk factor modification against brain ageing and AD. More studies with larger samples are needed to replicate these research findings in more diverse, community-based settings.

While the neuroprotective effects of caloric restriction have been widely demonstrated, they have not yet been investigated in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The aim of this trial was to evaluate the effect of intentional weight loss in elderly adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Eighty participants aged over 60 were randomly allocated to receive either nutritional counselling or medical care alone for 12 months. The findings of this study indicated that intentional weight loss through diet was associated with cognitive improvement in patients with MCI, and this association was strongest in younger adults and APOE4 carriers. As this was the first clinical trial exploring these effects in patients with MCI further research is warranted.
Abstract
CONTEXT Obesity in midlife is a risk factor for dementia, but it is unknown if caloric restriction-induced weight loss could prevent cognitive decline and therefore dementia in elderly patients with cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the cognitive effect of intentional weight loss in obese elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), considering the influence of age, apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype, physical activity, biochemical markers, and diet. DESIGN Single-center, prospective controlled trial. SETTING Academic medical center. PARTICIPANTS Eighty obese patients with MCI, aged 60 or older (68.1 ± 4.9 y, body mass index [BMI] 35.5 ± 4.4 kg/m(2), 83.7% women, 26.3% APOE allele ϵ4 carriers). INTERVENTION Random allocation to conventional medical care alone (n = 40) or together with nutritional counselling (n = 40) in group meetings aiming to promote weight loss through caloric restriction for 12 months. OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS clinical data, body composition, neuropsychological tests (main outcome), serum biomarkers, APOE genotype, physical performance, dietary recalls. RESULTS Seventy-five patients completed the follow-up. BMI, on average, decreased 1.7 ± 1.8 kg/m(2) (P = .021), and most of the cognitive tests improved, without difference between the groups. In analysis with linear generalized models, the BMI decrease was associated with improvements in verbal memory, verbal fluency, executive function, and global cognition, after adjustment for education, gender, physical activity, and baseline tests. This association was strongest in younger seniors (for memory and fluency) and in APOE allele ϵ4 carriers (for executive function). Changes in homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance, C-reactive protein, leptin and intake of energy, carbohydrates, and fats were associated with improvement in cognitive tests. CONCLUSIONS Intentional weight loss through diet was associated with cognitive improvement in patients with MCI.

A total of 2290 individuals (1104 men and 1186 women) were eligible for the study. Results demonstrate greater vulnerability to weight bias among youth at higher levels of obesity, and that women are more vulnerable to weight/height discrimination than men. Authors conclude that the prevalence of weight/height discrimination is high in the United States and it is comparable to rates of racial discrimination.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE Limited data are available on the prevalence and patterns of body weight discrimination from representative samples. This study examined experiences of weight/height discrimination in a nationally representative sample of US adults and compared their prevalence and patterns with discrimination experiences based on race and gender. METHOD AND PROCEDURES Data were from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States, a 1995-1996 community-based survey of English-speaking adults aged 25-74 (N=2290). Reported experiences of weight/height discrimination included a variety of institutional settings and interpersonal relationships. Multivariate regression analyses were used to predict weight/height discrimination controlling for sociodemographic characteristics and body weight status. RESULTS The prevalence of weight/height discrimination ranged from 5% among men to 10% among women, but these average percentages obscure the much higher risk of weight discrimination among heavier individuals (40% for adults with body mass index (BMI) of 35 and above). Younger individuals with a higher BMI had a particularly high risk of weight/height discrimination regardless of their race, education and weight status. Women were at greater risk for weight/height discrimination than men, especially women with a BMI of 30-35 who were three times more likely to report weight/height discrimination compared to male peers of a similar weight. DISCUSSION Weight/height discrimination is prevalent in American society and is relatively close to reported rates of racial discrimination, particularly among women. Both institutional forms of weight/height discrimination (for example, in employment settings) and interpersonal mistreatment due to weight/height (for example, being called names) were common, and in some cases were even more prevalent than discrimination due to gender and race.
