Abstract
High nickel (Ni ≥ 80%) lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high specific energy are one of the most important technical routes to resolve the growing endurance anxieties. However, because of their extremely aggressive chemistries, high-Ni (Ni ≥ 80%) LIBs suffer from poor cycle life and safety performance, which hinder their large-scale commercial applications. Among varied strategies, electrolyte engineering is very powerful to simultaneously enhance the cycle life and safety of high-Ni (Ni ≥ 80%) LIBs. In this review, the pivotal challenges faced by high-Ni oxide cathodes and conventional LiPF6 -carbonate-based electrolytes are comprehensively summarized. Then, the functional additives design guidelines for LiPF6 -carbonate -based electrolytes and the design principles of high voltage resistance/high safety novel electrolytes are systematically elaborated to resolve these pivotal challenges. Moreover, the proposed thermal runaway mechanisms of high-Ni (Ni ≥ 80%) LIBs are also reviewed to provide useful perspectives for the design of high-safety electrolytes. Finally, the potential research directions of electrolyte engineering toward high-performance high-Ni (Ni ≥ 80%) LIBs are provided. This review will have an important impact on electrolyte innovation as well as the commercial evolution of high-Ni (Ni ≥ 80%) LIBs, and also will be significant to breakthrough the energy density ceiling of LIBs.

Hepatotoxicity of usnic acid and underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Since usnic acid was first isolated in 1844 as a prominent secondary lichen metabolite, it has been used for various purposes worldwide. Usnic acid has been claimed to possess numerous therapeutic properties, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-proliferative, and antipyretic activities. Approximately two decades ago, crude extracts of usnic acid or pure usnic acid were marketed in the United States as dietary supplements for aiding in weight loss as a "fat-burner" and gained popularity in the bodybuilding community; however, hepatotoxicity was documented for some usnic acid containing products. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received numerous reports of liver toxicity associated with the use of dietary supplements containing usnic acid, leading the FDA to issue a warning letter in 2001 on a product, LipoKinetix. The FDA also sent a recommendation letter to the manufacturer of LipoKinetix, resulting in the withdrawal of LipoKinetix from the market. These events triggered investigations into the hepatotoxicity of usnic acid and its mechanisms. In 2008, we published a review article titled "Usnic Acid and Usnea Barbata Toxicity". This review is an updated version of our previous review article and incorporates additional data published since 2008. The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive summary of the understanding of the liver toxicity associated with usnic acid, with a particular focus on the current understanding of the putative mechanisms of usnic acid-related hepatotoxicity.

Fine-mapping analysis including over 254,000 East Asian and European descendants identifies 136 putative colorectal cancer susceptibility genes.

Abstract
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified more than 200 common genetic variants independently associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, but the causal variants and target genes are mostly unknown. We sought to fine-map all known CRC risk loci using GWAS data from 100,204 cases and 154,587 controls of East Asian and European ancestry. Our stepwise conditional analyses revealed 238 independent association signals of CRC risk, each with a set of credible causal variants (CCVs), of which 28 signals had a single CCV. Our cis-eQTL/mQTL and colocalization analyses using colorectal tissue-specific transcriptome and methylome data separately from 1299 and 321 individuals, along with functional genomic investigation, uncovered 136 putative CRC susceptibility genes, including 56 genes not previously reported. Analyses of single-cell RNA-seq data from colorectal tissues revealed 17 putative CRC susceptibility genes with distinct expression patterns in specific cell types. Analyses of whole exome sequencing data provided additional support for several target genes identified in this study as CRC susceptibility genes. Enrichment analyses of the 136 genes uncover pathways not previously linked to CRC risk. Our study substantially expanded association signals for CRC and provided additional insight into the biological mechanisms underlying CRC development.

Opportunities and challenges of polyphenols and polysaccharides for type 1 diabetes intervention.

Abstract
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic β cell. It contributes to high mortality, frequent diabetic complications, poor quality of life in patients and also puts a significant economic burden on health care systems. Therefore, the development of new therapeutic strategies is urgently needed. Recently, certain dietary compounds with potential applications in food industry, particularly polyphenols and polysaccharides, have gained increasing attention with their prominent anti-diabetic effects on T1D by modulating β cell function, the gut microbiota and/or the immune system. In this review, we critically discuss the recent findings of several dietary polyphenols and polysaccharides with the potential to protect against T1D and the underlying anti-diabetic mechanisms. More importantly, we highlight the current trends, major issues, and future directions of industrial production of polyphenols- and polysaccharides-based functional foods for preventing or delaying T1D.

Unraveling biological behavior and influence of magnetic iron-based nanoparticles in algal-bacterial systems: A comprehensive review.

Abstract
Magnetic iron-based nanoparticles have been found to stimulate algae growth and harvest, repair disintegrated particles and improve stability, and facilitate operation in extreme environments, which help improve the wide application of algal-bacterial technology. Nevertheless, up to now, no literature collected to systematically review the research progress of on the employment of magnetic iron-based nanoparticles in the algal-bacterial system. This review summarizes the special effects (e.g., size effect, surface effect and biological effect) and corresponding properties of magnetic iron-based nanoparticles (e.g., magnetism, adsorption, electricity, etc.), which is closely related to biological effects and algal-bacterial behaviors. Additionally, it was found that magnetic iron-based nanoparticles offer remarkable impacts on improving the growth and metabolism of algal-bacterial consortia and the mechanisms mainly include its possible iron uptake pathways in bacteria and/or algae cells, as well as the magnetic biological effect of magnetic iron-based nanoparticles on algae-bacteria growth. Furthermore, in terms of the mechanism for establishing the algae-bacteria symbiotic relationship, the most recent works reveal that the charge effect, material transfer and signal transmission of magnetic iron-based nanoparticles possess a large array of potential mechanisms by which it can affect the establishment of algal-bacterial symbiosis. This discussion is expected to promote the progress of magnetic iron-based nanoparticles, as an eco-friendly, convenient and cost-effective technology that can be applied in algal-bacterial wastewater treatment fields.

Copper in Cancer: from transition metal to potential target.

Abstract
In recent years, with the continuous in-depth exploration of the molecular mechanisms of tumorigenesis, numerous potential new targets for cancer treatment have been identified, some of which have been further developed in clinical practice and have produced positive outcomes. Notably, researchers' initial motivation for studying copper metabolism in cancer stems from the fact that copper is a necessary trace element for organisms and is closely connected to body growth and metabolism. Moreover, over the past few decades, considerable progress has been made in understanding the molecular processes and correlations between copper and cancer. Certain achievements have been made in the development and use of relevant clinical medications. The concept of "cuproptosis," a novel concept that differs from previous forms of cell death, was first proposed by a group of scientists last year, offering fresh perspectives on the targeting capabilities of copper in the treatment of cancer. In this review, we introduced the fundamental physiological functions of copper, the key components of copper metabolism, and a summary of the current research contributions on the connection between copper and cancer. In addition, the development of new copper-based nanomaterials and their associated mechanisms of action are discussed. Finally, we described how the susceptibility of cancer cells to this metallic nutrition could be leveraged to further improve the existing cancer treatment paradigm in the new setting.

Abstract
Background and aims: Experimental studies showed that carotenoids had anti-carcinogenic properties, but epidemiological studies on the association between dietary carotenoids and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) risk were limited, and the findings were inconsistent. This study aimed to investigate the roles of intake of dietary carotenoids in the development of ESCC among a rural Chinese population. Methods: A population-based case-control study was conducted in Southwest China. A total of 915 incident ESCC cases and 925 community-based controls were included. A validated food frequency questionnaire with 76-item was adopted to collect information about dietary consumption. Intake of dietary calories and each carotenoid was calculated according to the China food composition tables. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated by a logistic regression model, with adjustments for age, gender, body mass index, family cancer history, cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, education, marital status, prudent pattern score, and total calories. Results: In comparison to the highest with lowest intake quartiles, intake of total carotenes (OR: 0.70, 95% CI: 0.52-0.96, Ptrend: 0.024), α-carotene (OR: 0.62, 95% CI: 0.46-0.83, Ptrend: 0.014), β-carotene (OR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.46-0.86, P-trend: 0.005), and the sum of lutein and zeaxanthin (OR: 0.41, 95% CI: 0.29-0.56, Ptrend<0.001) was significantly associated with a decreased risk of ESCC after adjustment for confounders. Conclusions: The results indicated that a higher intake of total carotene, α-carotene, β-carotene, and the sum of lutein and zeaxanthin was associated with a lower risk of ESCC.

Abstract
Advances in understanding the biological effects of dietary flavonoids and flavonoid-rich foods have been reported. Improving knowledge about their beneficial effects, and mechanisms of action, is crucial for better utilization. However, mechanisms responsible for their health benefits are still unclear. Previous research considered has suggested that gut microbiota might be linked to the metabolism of dietary flavonoids. To understand the bioactivities of dietary flavonoids/flavonoid-rich foods better, and the role of microbiota, we explored systematically 1) types of dietary flavonoids and associated health benefits, 2) low bioaccessibilities and metabolic characteristics, 3) gut microbiota role in regulation, and 4) crosstalk between regulation mechanisms. Current challenges and future perspectives were also considered, offering new research directions and identifying trends in the development of flavonoid-rich food products.

Abstract
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), a rare primary cutaneous neuroendocrine neoplasm, is extremely aggressive and has a higher mortality rate than melanoma. Based on Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) status and morphology, MCCs are often divided into several distinct subsets: pure MCPyV-positive, pure MCPyV-negative, and combined MCC. MCPyV-positive MCC develops by the clonal integration of viral DNA, whereas MCPyV-negative MCC is induced by frequent ultraviolet (UV)-mediated mutations, that are characterized by a high mutational burden, UV signature mutations, and many mutations in TP53 and retinoblastoma suppressor gene (RB1). Combined MCC consists of an intimate mix of MCC and other cutaneous tumor populations, and is usually MCPyV-negative, with rare exceptions. Based on the existing subsets of MCC, it is speculated that there are at least 4 stages in the natural history of stem cell differentiation: primitive pluripotent stem cells, divergent differentiated stem cells, unidirectional stem cells, and Merkel cells (or epidermal/adnexal cells). In the first stage, MCPyV may integrate into the genome of primitive pluripotent stem cells, driving oncogenesis in pure MCPyV-positive MCC. If MCPyV integration does not occur, the stem cells enter the second stage and acquire the ability to undergo multidirectional neuroendocrine and epidermal (or adnexal) differentiation. At this stage, accumulated UV-mediated mutations may drive the development of combined MCC. In the third stage, the stem cells differentiate into unidirectional neuroendocrine stem cells, UV-mediated mutations can induce carcinogenesis in pure MCPyV-negative MCC. Therefore, it has been speculated that several subsets of MCCs arise from different stages of differentiation of common stem cells.

Gut microbiota and cardiac arrhythmia.

Abstract
One of the most prevalent cardiac diseases is cardiac arrhythmia, however the underlying causes are not entirely understood. There is a lot of proof that gut microbiota (GM) and its metabolites have a significant impact on cardiovascular health. In recent decades, intricate impacts of GM on cardiac arrythmia have been identified as prospective approaches for its prevention, development, treatment, and prognosis. In this review, we discuss about how GM and its metabolites might impact cardiac arrhythmia through a variety of mechanisms. We proposed to explore the relationship between the metabolites produced by GM dysbiosis including short-chain fatty acids(SCFA), Indoxyl sulfate(IS), trimethylamine N-oxide(TMAO), lipopolysaccharides(LPS), phenylacetylglutamine(PAGln), bile acids(BA), and the currently recognized mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias including structural remodeling, electrophysiological remodeling, abnormal nervous system regulation and other disease associated with cardiac arrythmia, detailing the processes involving immune regulation, inflammation, and different types of programmed cell death etc., which presents a key aspect of the microbial-host cross-talk. In addition, how GM and its metabolites differ and change in atrial arrhythmias and ventricular arrhythmias populations compared with healthy people are also summarized. Then we introduced potential therapeutic strategies including probiotics and prebiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and immunomodulator etc. In conclusion, the GM has a significant impact on cardiac arrhythmia through a variety of mechanisms, offering a wide range of possible treatment options. The discovery of therapeutic interventions that reduce the risk of cardiac arrhythmia by altering GM and metabolites is a real challenge that lies ahead.
