Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA) are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids essential to human health. They play a role in cell membrane integrity, immune and inflammation regulation, cognition and neuromuscular function. As the human body cannot make these fatty acids, they need to be obtained through diet or supplementation. Regarding skeletal muscle, recent research showed that n-3PUFAs may increase the uptake of amino acids by increasing the membrane fluidity in the muscle, and by activating pathways that inhibit protein breakdown. This led to the hypothesis that n-3PUFAs may enhance muscle mass gain and strength. This systematic review sought to gather all available evidence about the impact of n-3PUFA supplementation on muscle mass, strength, and function in healthy young and older adults. The review included 14 studies with a total of 1443 participants. The authors found that n-3PUFA supplementation had no significant effect on muscle mass or muscle function in healthy young and older adults, however, a very small but significant positive effect was noted regarding muscle strength. In the discussion section, the authors explain the challenges of their review and how these findings integrate with the current understanding and other research findings. They concluded more research is needed to get a better insight into the effects of n-3PUFA on muscle function and the variants.
Abstract
The effects of omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA) supplementation on skeletal muscle are currently unclear. The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize all available evidence regarding the influence of n-3PUFA supplementation on muscle mass, strength, and function in healthy young and older adults. Four databases were searched (Medline, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, and SportDiscus). Predefined eligibility criteria were determined according to Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcomes, and Study Design. Only peer-reviewed studies were included. The Cochrane RoB2 Tool and the NutriGrade approach were used to access risk of bias and certainty in evidence. Effect sizes were calculated using pre-post scores and analyzed using a three-level, random-effects meta-analysis. When sufficient studies were available, subanalyses were performed in the muscle mass, strength, and function outcomes according to participant's age (<60 or ≥60 years), supplementation dosage (<2 or ≥2 g/day), and training intervention ("resistance training" vs. "none or other"). Overall, 14 individual studies were included, total 1443 participants (913 females; 520 males) and 52 outcomes measures. Studies had high overall risk of bias and consideration of all NutriGrade elements resulted in a certainty assessment of moderate meta-evidence for all outcomes. n-3PUFA supplementation had no significant effect on muscle mass (standard mean difference [SMD] = 0.07 [95% CI: -0.02, 0.17], P = 0.11) and muscle function (SMD = 0.03 [95% CI: -0.09, 0.15], P = 0.58), but it showed a very small albeit significant positive effect on muscle strength (SMD = 0.12 [95% CI: 0.006, 0.24], P = 0.04) in participants when compared with placebo. Subgroup analyses showed that age, supplementation dose, or cosupplementation alongside resistance training did not influence these responses. In conclusion, our analyses indicated that n-3PUFA supplementation may lead to very small increases in muscle strength but did not impact muscle mass and function in healthy young and older adults. To our knowledge, this is the first review and meta-analysis investigating whether n-3PUFA supplementation can lead to increases in muscle strength, mass, and function in healthy adults. Intestinal barrier function is closely related to the pathogenesis of various immune and inflammatory diseases. The intestinal microbiota plays an essential role in maintaining gut homeostasis and functionality in the presence of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory microbes. The aim of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the role of probiotics in contributing to intestinal barrier function, and the related immune function, inflammatory status, and gut microbiota composition. This study was a systematic review of 28 articles (qualitative synthesis), and a meta-analysis of 26 randomised controlled trials. Results showed that probiotics could significantly improve intestinal barrier function according to specific indicators. The meta-analysis also indicated that probiotic supplementation could reduce inflammatory factors. Furthermore, it also demonstrated that probiotics could modulate gut microbiota compositions by elevating the abundances of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. Authors conclude that probiotics could improve intestinal barrier function to some extent, but more high-quality randomised controlled studies are needed to reach a solid conclusion.

Summary Review:
Introduction
Probiotics are microorganisms that are considered beneficial to health. The aim of this study was to assess the role of probiotics in protecting intestinal barrier function as well as their effects on the composition of gut microbiota, inflammatory status, and immune function for reducing the risk of related diseases.
Methods
26 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published between 2005-2021 with a total population of n=1891 (n = 955 Intervention, n = 936 controls)) were included in the meta-analysis. Outcome measures were categorised under indicators relating to intestinal barrier function, inflammatory markers, immune function and microbiota composition. Studies were conducted worldwide with participants being healthcare patients or athletes. Study durations ranged from 3 days to 6 months. Different dosages and forms of probiotics were used. Data was pooled for Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Enterobacteriaceae and Enterococcus species.
Results
Gut barrier function in the probiotic groups was improved as measured by transepithelial resistance (TER) mean difference (MD) 5.27 {95% CI, 3.82 to 6.72, p = < 0.00001], lipopolysaccharide (LPS) standardised mean difference (SMD) -0.47 (95% CI, -0.85 to -0.09, p = 0.02), serum zonulin SMD -1.58 (95% CI,-2.49 to -0.66, p = 0.0007), and endotoxin SMD -3.20 (95% CI, -5.41 to - 0.98, p = 0.005).
The inflammatory markers interleukin 6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) were also improved compared to control groups. Lactobacillus (95% CI p=0.02) and Bifidobacterium (95% CI, p=0.01) enhanced microbial composition, however, Enterobacteriaceae and Enterococcus species did not. Immune function as measured by Immunoglobulin A (IgA), Immunoglobulin G IgG and Immunoglobulin M (IgM) were not improved.
Conclusion
The findings of this study suggest that intestinal barrier function and microbial composition could be improved using probiotics. They were also found to help alleviate inflammation. Further studies of high quality are however needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Probiotics play a vital role in treating immune and inflammatory diseases by improving intestinal barrier function; however, a comprehensive evaluation is missing. The present study aimed to explore the impact of probiotics on the intestinal barrier and related immune function, inflammation, and microbiota composition. A systematic review and meta-analyses were conducted. METHODS Four major databases (PubMed, Science Citation Index Expanded, CENTRAL, and Embase) were thoroughly searched. Weighted mean differences were calculated for continuous outcomes with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs), heterogeneity among studies was evaluated utilizing I2 statistic (Chi-Square test), and data were pooled using random effects meta-analyses. RESULTS Meta-analysis of data from a total of 26 RCTs (n = 1891) indicated that probiotics significantly improved gut barrier function measured by levels of TER (MD, 5.27, 95% CI, 3.82 to 6.72, P < 0.00001), serum zonulin (SMD, -1.58, 95% CI, -2.49 to -0.66, P = 0.0007), endotoxin (SMD, -3.20, 95% CI, -5.41 to -0.98, P = 0.005), and LPS (SMD, -0.47, 95% CI, -0.85 to -0.09, P = 0.02). Furthermore, probiotic groups demonstrated better efficacy over control groups in reducing inflammatory factors, including CRP, TNF-α, and IL-6. Probiotics can also modulate the gut microbiota structure by boosting the enrichment of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. CONCLUSION The present work revealed that probiotics could improve intestinal barrier function, and alleviate inflammation and microbial dysbiosis. Further high-quality RCTs are warranted to achieve a more definitive conclusion. When acute, inflammation is a necessary function of the immune system allowing the body to recognise and remove foreign stimuli. However, when chronic inflammation occurs, it can contribute to and exacerbate diseases such as type 2 diabetes (T2D). The gut microbiota and the use of probiotics has been shown to modulate processes within the body and decrease chronic inflammation, however research has not consistently shown this and an inverse relationship has been shown in some studies. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the effect of probiotics and synbiotics on inflammation in individuals with prediabetes and T2D. A total of 32 randomised control trials were included in the meta-analysis and showed that certain, but not all inflammatory markers were reduced. Antioxidants were increased. The effect was especially pronounced in individuals with T2D as opposed to prediabetes. It was concluded that probiotics or synbiotics could be useful for individuals with T2D to reduce inflammation and reduce the risk for other associated diseases such as heart disease.
Abstract
PURPOSE Probiotics or synbiotics consumption have been suggested to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) through a decline in inflammation and oxidative stress, however, the results from studies are conflicting. This study filled this knowledge gap by evaluating randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating probiotics or synbiotics intake on adipokines, inflammation, and oxidative stress in patients with prediabetes and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS We systematically did search up to March 2022 in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and Cochrane library. A random-effect model was applied to estimate the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for each outcome. RESULTS A total of 32 RCTs were included in the meta-analysis. This intervention led to a significant decrease in levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) (WMD - 0.62 mg/l; 95% CI - 0.80, - 0.44; p < 0.001), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) (WMD - 0.27 pg/ml; 95% CI - 0.44, - 0.10; p = 0.002) and malondialdehyde (MDA) (WMD - 0.51 µmol/l; 95% CI - 0.73, - 0.30; p < 0.001), and also a significant increase in levels of glutathione (GSH) (WMD 69.80 µmol/l; 95% CI 33.65, 105.95; p < 0.001), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (WMD 73.59 mmol/l; 95% CI 33.24, 113.95; p < 0.001) and nitric oxide (NO) (WMD 7.49 µmol/l; 95% CI 3.12, 11.86; p = 0.001), without significant alterations in interleukin-6 (IL-6) and adipokines levels. CONCLUSION A consumption of probiotics or synbiotics could be a useful intervention to improve cardiometabolic outcomes through a reduced inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with prediabetes and T2DM.

Food allergy is defined as any adverse health effect that occurs due to a specific immune response that usually repeats every time after a specific food exposure. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of administering probiotics as a supplement to treat food and cow’s milk allergies among children less than 5 years old as compared to placebo. This study was a systematic review and meta-analysis of twenty randomised controlled trials. Results showed that probiotic supplementation significantly improved food allergy symptoms when compared to a placebo. Furthermore, subgroup analysis also revealed that the effect remained favourable in all subgroups. Authors concluded that probiotics may be useful in reducing food allergies among children under 5. However, they also point out that more systematic reviews are needed to assess the safety and side effect pattern of these probiotics.
Abstract
The global prevalence of allergies is on the rise. Food allergies are of special concern among children under 5 years of age, leading to morbidity and mortality. Though the standard management is avoidance, probiotics are being used widely to prevent and treat food allergies. We aimed to determine the effect of probiotics as a therapeutic option for controlling food and cow's milk allergy among children under 5 years of age. A systematic search of electronic medical literature databases was conducted. We included all eligible randomized controlled trials available from inception until May 2021. The primary outcome of interest was the relief of allergic symptoms, while the secondary outcome was the induction of tolerance. Two investigators undertook the literature search, screening, data extraction, and quality appraisal independently. Data analysis and synthesis were performed using STATA 14 software. Subgroup analysis was performed for the duration of use and follow-up, and the age category of children included in the outcome were done. Twenty trials involving 4043 pediatric patients with food allergies were included in the review. Subgroup analysis also revealed that probiotics were effective in treating food allergies across the various subgroups included in the model. Around 15 trials reported our primary outcome, relief of symptoms, as a binary variable, which was pooled to obtain a risk ratio of 0.86 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.77-0.95), with very low heterogeneity (I2 7.7%). Six trials were included for the secondary outcome of interest, which gave an imprecise pooled estimate of 1.29 (95% CI, 0.98-1.70) with significant heterogeneity (I2 7). Thus, we conclude that probiotics can serve as a vital therapeutic option in tackling food allergies among children less than 5 years of age. Further larger studies exploring the effectiveness of individual strains and their safety pattern are essential.

The prevalence of overweight or obesity in children is increasing due to changes in dietary structure and exercise habits, as determined by the body mass index (BMI) calculated from height and weight. Childhood obesity can cause some clinical complications such as hypertension, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of probiotics on eight factors in children with overweight or obesity. This study was a systematic review and meta-analysis of four studies with a total of 206 overweight or obesity children. Among them, 105 were in the probiotic group, and 101 were in the placebo group. Results showed that probiotics can improve high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, adiponectin, leptin, and TNF-α in overweight or obese children. The systematic review showed that probiotics work mainly by reshaping disturbed intestinal microbiota, regulating lipid metabolism, reducing inflammation and immune response, playing a positive effect of short-chain fatty acids produced, alleviating oxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum stress, and inhibiting the growth and reproduction of pathogens in the gut. Authors concluded that probiotics could regulate lipid metabolism and immune response to some degree in children with overweight or obesity.
Abstract
BACKGROUND This paper aimed to examine the effects of probiotics on eight factors in overweight or obese children by meta-analysis, namely, body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), adiponectin, leptin and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and summarize the mechanisms of action of probiotics based on the existing researches. METHODS Six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, SinoMed and CNKI) were searched until March 2023. Review Manager 5.4 was used for meta-analysis. The data were analysed using weighted mean differences (WMDs) or standardized mean differences (SMDs) under a fixed effect model or random effect model to observe the effects of probiotic administration on the included indicators. RESULTS Four publications with a total of 206 overweight or obesity children were included. According to the meta-analysis, probiotics were able to significantly decrease the levels of HDL-C (MD, 0.06; 95% CI 0.03, 0.09; P = 0.0001), LDL-C (MD, - 0.06; 95% CI - 0.12, - 0.00; P = 0.04), adiponectin (MD, 1.39; 95% CI 1.19, 1.59; P < 0.00001), leptin (MD, - 2.72; 95% CI - 2.9, - 2.54; P < 0.00001) and TNF-α (MD, - 4.91; 95% CI - 7.15, - 2.67; P < 0.0001) compared to those in the placebo group. Still, for BMI, the palcebo group seemed to be better than the probiotic group (MD, 0.85; 95% CI 0.04, 1.66; P = 0.04). TC (MD, - 0.05; 95% CI - 0.12, 0.02; P = 0.14) and TG (MD, - 0.16; 95% CI - 0.36, 0.05; P = 0.14) were not different between two groups. CONCLUSIONS This review drew that probiotics might act as a role in regulating HDL-C, LDL-C, adiponectin, leptin and TNF-α in overweight or obesity children. Additionally, our systematic review yielded that probiotics might regulate lipid metabolism and improve obese associated symptoms by some paths. Psoriasis constitutes a chronic, inflammatory skin disease with an immune-genetic basis that has been linked to numerous diseases, including metabolic syndrome, cancer, as well as cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of this study was to determine if the relationship of psoriasis with CV events (CVE) risk is congruent with causal associations. This study is a report employing a meta-analysis of observational studies and a two-sample mendelian randomised trial (MR). Results from the meta-analysis show that psoriasis was remarkably associated with a higher risk of incident coronary artery disease (CAD) and myocardial infarction (MI) and was not associated with heart failure risk. Furthermore, the MR approach showed that psoriasis was linked with a higher risk of CAD in both European and East Asian populations. Additionally, psoriasis was also causally linked to an elevated risk of MI in European population. Authors conclude that their findings indicate a causal association of psoriasis with CAD and MI. However, further studies are needed to establish the mechanisms of the causal relationship of psoriasis with CAD and MI.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Psoriasis has been linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD), including coronary artery disease (CAD), myocardial infarction (MI), and heart failure (HF). However, available studies regarding this relationship have shown inconsistent results. Therefore, in this report, we performed a comprehensive review of the literature to assess the effects of psoriasis on risk of these CVDs. METHODS A search of literature until 24 December 2021 was done in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Embase. Within European and East Asian populations, meta-analyses of observational studies assessing correlations between psoriasis and various CVD risk factors were conducted. Mendelian randomization (MR) was then employed to assess the causative impact of genetic pre-disposition for psoriasis on these CVD risk factors. RESULTS The results of the meta-analyses indicated that, in both the European and East Asian populations, psoriasis was significantly linked to an elevated risk in the incidence of CAD (RR = 1.51, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04-2.18, p = 0.028 and RR = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.62-2.25, p < 0.001) and MI (RR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.04-1.46, p = 0.017 and RR = 2.17, 95% CI: 1.44-3.28, p < 0.001). A positive genetic relationship of psoriasis with CAD was found in European individuals (IVW OR1.03; 95% CI: 1.01-1.06, p = 0.005) and in East Asian individuals (IVW OR1.18; 95% CI: 1.03-1.32, p = 0.031). We also established that psoriasis was causally linked with an elevated risk of MI (IVW OR1.05; 95% CI: 1.01-1.09, p = 0.026) in the European population as determined using an MR approach. Moreover, our MR results were congruent with the null findings from the meta-analysis assessing associations of psoriasis with HF risk. CONCLUSIONS This research work provides preliminary evidence that psoriasis and CVD have a common genetic origin and that targeted psoriasis treatment might improve cardiovascular outcomes. These results not only increase our knowledge of the genetic underpinnings linking a comorbidity of psoriasis with CVD but also suggests a novel approach for CVD prevention.

Arthritic disease is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting one or more joints. Over 100 different forms of arthritis have been identified. Despite their different causes (i.e. degenerative, autoimmune), they share common symptoms such as joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced mobility, which can be disabling in many cases. Drug treatment focuses mainly on limiting the progression of the disease, reducing joint inflammation and managing pain. However, these drugs are associated with many side effects. The rhizome of Curcuma longa (CL), also known as turmeric, has longstanding use as an anti-inflammatory in traditional Asian medicines. Research has affirmed its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. Evidence from multiple clinical trials suggests that curcumin, one of the active compounds of CL, can reduce the subjective experience of pain in some conditions and can also improve the symptoms and inflammation associated with arthritis. Hence this systematic review sought to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CL-extract in 5 types of arthritis (including Ankylosing Spondylitis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Juvenile idiopathic arthritis and gout). The review included 29 randomized controlled trials involving 2396 participants, with dosages ranging from 120 mg to 1500 mg for a period of 4-36 weeks. Overall, curcumin and CL extract appeared to improve inflammation and pain levels in arthritic subjects whilst demonstrating safety with no increases in adverse effects. CL and its active constituents appeared to favourably change immune and inflammatory responses, as well as serum uric acid levels in the reviewed forms of arthritis. However, due to the small sample numbers in the trials and some lower quality studies, the authors advocate to interpret the results with caution until more solid evidence is available.
Abstract
Background: Modern pharmacological research found that the chemical components of Curcuma longa L. are mainly curcumin and turmeric volatile oil. Several recent randomized controlled trials (RCT) have shown that curcumin improves symptoms and inflammation in patients with arthritis. Methods: Pubmed, Cochran Library, CNKI, and other databases were searched to collect the randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Then, the risk of bias of RCTs were assessed and data of RCTs were extracted. Finally, RevMan 5.3 was utilized for meta-analysis. Results: Twenty-nine (29) RCTs involving 2396 participants and 5 types of arthritis were included. The arthritis included Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Osteoarthritis (OA), Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and gout/hyperuricemia. Curcumin and Curcuma longa Extract were administered in doses ranging from 120 mg to 1500 mg for a duration of 4-36 weeks. In general, Curcumin and Curcuma longa Extract showed safety in all studies and improved the severity of inflammation and pain levels in these arthritis patients. However, more RCTs are needed in the future to elucidate the effect of Curcumin and Curcuma longa Extract supplementation in patients with arthritis, including RA, OA, AS and JIA. Conclusion: Curcumin and Curcuma longa Extract may improve symptoms and inflammation levels in people with arthritis. However, due to the low quality and small quantity of RCTs, the conclusions need to be interpreted carefully.

Vitamin D is implicated in optimum function of the immune system. Its deficiency has been linked to susceptibility to respiratory infections. It is postulated that vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency is also associated with COVID-19. The aim of this study was to determine the association between vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency and susceptibility to COVID-19, its severity, mortality and role of vitamin D in its treatment. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of seventy-six publications. Results show increased odds of developing COVID-19, progression to severe COVID-19 and death in people with vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency. In fact, people who developed COVID-19, severe COVID-19 and fatal disease had lower 25-hydroxy vitamin D concentration compared to people without COVID-19 or non-severe COVID-19 or non-fatal COVID-19 respectively. Authors conclude that Vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency may increase the risk of developing COVID-19 infection and susceptibility to more severe disease.
Abstract
PURPOSE Vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency may increase the susceptibility to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to determine the association between vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency and susceptibility to COVID-19, its severity, mortality, and role of vitamin D in its treatment. METHODS We searched CINAHL, Cochrane library, EMBASE, PubMED, Scopus, and Web of Science up to May 30, 2021, for observational studies on association between vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency and susceptibility to COVID-19, severe disease, and death among adults, and, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing vitamin D treatment against standard care or placebo, in improving severity or mortality among adults with COVID-19. Risk of bias was assessed using Newcastle-Ottawa scale for observational studies and AUB-KQ1 Cochrane tool for RCTs. Study-level data were analyzed using RevMan 5.3 and R (v4.1.0). Heterogeneity was determined by I2 and sources were explored through prespecified sensitivity analyses, subgroup analyses, and meta-regressions. RESULTS Of 1877 search results, 76 studies satisfying eligibility criteria were included. Seventy-two observational studies were included in the meta-analysis (n = 1 976 099). Vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency increased the odds of developing COVID-19 (odds ratio [OR] 1.46; 95% CI, 1.28-1.65; P < 0.0001; I2 = 92%), severe disease (OR 1.90; 95% CI, 1.52-2.38; P < 0.0001; I2 = 81%), and death (OR 2.07; 95% CI, 1.28-3.35; P = 0.003; I2 = 73%). The 25-hydroxy vitamin D concentrations were lower in individuals with COVID-19 compared with controls (mean difference [MD] -3.85 ng/mL; 95% CI, -5.44 to -2.26; P ≤ 0.0001), in patients with severe COVID-19 compared with controls with nonsevere COVID-19 (MD -4.84 ng/mL; 95% CI, -7.32 to -2.35; P = 0.0001) and in nonsurvivors compared with survivors (MD -4.80 ng/mL; 95% CI, -7.89 to -1.71; P = 0.002). The association between vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency and death was insignificant when studies with high risk of bias or studies reporting unadjusted effect estimates were excluded. Risk of bias and heterogeneity were high across all analyses. Discrepancies in timing of vitamin D testing, definitions of severe COVID-19, and vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency partly explained the heterogeneity. Four RCTs were widely heterogeneous precluding meta-analysis. CONCLUSION Multiple observational studies involving nearly 2 million adults suggest vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency increases susceptibility to COVID-19 and severe COVID-19, although with a high risk of bias and heterogeneity. Association with mortality was less robust. Heterogeneity in RCTs precluded their meta-analysis.

The effects of probiotics include improvement of mucosal barrier function, promotion of visceral hypersensitivity, effects on gastrointestinal motility, and regulation of immune responses. The aim of this study was to collect the published randomized controlled trials of probiotics in the treatment of diarrhoea and to strictly evaluate and systematically analyse them, in order to provide a basis for the clinical application of probiotics. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 publications with a total of 1585 patients. Results show that probiotics are safe and effective for improving the diarrhoea and related discomfort. Authors conclude that probiotic supplements may be a possible solution for the treatment of diarrhoea.
Abstract
BACKGROUND To collect the published trials of probiotics in the treatment of diarrhea and to strictly evaluate and systematically analyze the efficacy of probiotics use for the prevention and treatment of patients with diarrhea. METHODS We searched domestic and foreign literature published between January 2016 and July 2022 to find randomized control trials that used probiotics to treat diarrhea. Only studies published in English were considered. The quality of the included literatures was assessed by using the methods provided in the Cochrane Handbook. Valid data were extracted and analyzed by meta- analysis using the Software RevMan5.2. RESULTS Total 16 trials and 1585 patients were included. The results of the meta- analysis showed that in comparison with the simple Western medicine treatment group or placebo, the added use of probiotics could improve stool frequency, stool morphology, and related irritable bowel syndrome symptoms. CONCLUSION The added use of probiotics can further improve clinical outcomes in the patients with diarrhea; however, the implementation of larger and higher quality clinical trials is necessary to verify this conclusion.

A good diet can provide cancer patients with reasonable and adequate nutrition and strengthen their own immunity, thus enhancing their ability to fight against the adverse effects of cancer treatment. Chemotherapy, as an important treatment for malignant tumours, kills cancer cells and also kills normal cells that are actively proliferating in the body. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of dietary interventions for the relief of nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy and to provide evidence to support the development of clinical care protocols by summarizing the literature of relevant randomized controlled trials at home and abroad. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 5 studies. Results showed that dietary care reduced the occurrence of nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients in general, and the short-term effects were more pronounced. Furthermore, dietary care interventions have a positive effect on the quality-of-life improvement in chemotherapy patients. Dietary care can alleviate the symptoms of nausea and vomiting in tumour chemotherapy patients and improve the quality of life of short-term chemotherapy tumour patients. Authors conclude that effective dietary care can effectively improve the digestive symptoms of chemotherapy cancer patients and reduce and prevent all kinds of digestive reactions, which is worth promoting in cancer clinical care.
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effect of dietary care on chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in oncology patients. Methods: A retrospective analysis of digestive symptoms was conducted in cancer patients admitted to our hospital, who received chemotherapy, and corresponding effective dietary care countermeasures were adopted. Results: After the nursing intervention, the incidence of digestive symptoms was significantly reduced, the quality of life was significantly improved (59.92 ± 6.57) vs. (37.95 ± 7.50), and the nursing satisfaction was significantly higher (91.67% vs. 69.44%), with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). Meta-analysis showed that short-term (0 to 3 months) dietary care could alleviate nausea and vomiting symptoms in chemotherapy patients (P < 0.001) and improve the survival quality of oncology patients (P < 0.01). The effect of long-term (3-6 months) dietary care on the control of nausea and vomiting symptoms in chemotherapy patients was certain (P < 0.05), but the effect on the improvement of their quality of life (P > 0.05) was unclear. Conclusion: Dietary care can alleviate the symptoms of nausea and vomiting in tumor chemotherapy patients and improve the quality of life of short-term chemotherapy tumor patients, so it can be recommended to strengthen the dietary management for tumor patients receiving chemotherapy. Patients receiving chemotherapy should be given corresponding dietary nutritional care according to their clinical symptoms in order to alleviate their adverse reactions, enhance their own immunity, and improve the prognosis of cancer patients.
