Low-volume high-intensity swim training is superior to high-volume low-intensity training in relation to insulin sensitivity and glucose control in inactive middle-aged women.

Abstract
PURPOSE We tested the hypothesis that low-volume high-intensity swimming has a larger impact on insulin sensitivity and glucose control than high-volume low-intensity swimming in inactive premenopausal women with mild hypertension. METHODS Sixty-two untrained premenopausal women were randomised to an inactive control (n = 20; CON), a high-intensity low-volume (n = 21; HIT) or a low-intensity high-volume (n = 21; LIT) training group. During the 15-week intervention period, HIT performed 3 weekly 6-10 × 30-s all-out swimming intervals (average heart rate (HR) = 86 ± 3 % HRmax) interspersed by 2-min recovery periods and LIT swam continuously for 1 h at low intensity (average HR = 73 ± 3 % HRmax). Fasting blood samples were taken and an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was conducted pre- and post-intervention. RESULTS After HIT, resting plasma [insulin] was lowered (17 ± 34 %; P < 0.05) but remained similar after LIT and CON. Following HIT, 60-min OGTT plasma [insulin] and [glucose] was lowered (24 ± 30 % and 10 ± 16 %; P < 0.05) but remained similar after LIT and CON. Total area under the curve for plasma [glucose] was lower (P < 0.05) after HIT than LIT (660 ± 141 vs. 860 ± 325 mmol min L(-1)). Insulin sensitivity (HOMA-IR) had increased (P < 0.05) by 22 ± 34 % after HIT, with no significant change after LIT or CON, respectively. Plasma soluble intracellular cell adhesion molecule 1 was lowered (P < 0.05) by 4 ± 8 and 3 ± 9 % after HIT and CON, respectively, while plasma soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 had decreased (P < 0.05) by 8 ± 23 % after HIT only. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that low-volume high-intensity intermittent swimming is an effective and time-efficient training strategy for improving insulin sensitivity, glucose control and biomarkers of vascular function in inactive, middle-aged mildly hypertensive women.

Effect of moderate- and high-intensity acute exercise on appetite in obese individuals.

Abstract
PURPOSE The effect of acute exercise, and exercise intensity, on appetite control in obese individuals requires further study. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of acute isocaloric bouts (250 kcal) of high-intensity intermittent cycling (HIIC) and moderate-intensity continuous cycling (MICC) or short-duration HIIC (S-HIIC) (125 kcal) and a resting control condition on the appetite hormone responses, subjective feelings of appetite, energy intake (EI), and food reward in overweight/obese individuals. METHODS This study is a randomized crossover study on 12 overweight/obese volunteers. Participants were assigned to the control, MICC, HIIC, and S-HIIC conditions, 1 wk apart, in a counterbalanced order. Exercise was performed 1 h after a standard breakfast. An ad libitum test lunch was served 3 h after breakfast. Fasting/postprandial plasma samples of insulin, acylated ghrelin, polypeptide YY3-36, and glucagon-like peptide 1 and subjective feelings of appetite were measured every 30 min for 3 h. Nutrient and taste preferences were measured at the beginning and end of each condition using the Leeds Food Preference Questionnaire. RESULTS Insulin levels were significantly reduced, and glucagon-like peptide 1 levels significantly increased during all exercise bouts compared with those during rest. Acylated ghrelin plasma levels were lower in the MICC and HIIC, but not in S-HIIC, compared with those in control. There were no significant differences for polypeptide YY3-36 plasma levels, hunger or fullness ratings, EI, or food reward. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that, in overweight/obese individuals, isocaloric bouts of moderate- or high-intensity exercise lead to a similar appetite response. This strengthens previous findings in normal-weight individuals that acute exercise, even at high intensity, does not induce any known physiological adaptation that would lead to increased EI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Guidelines state that accumulated physical activity is beneficial for health, but a minimum duration of 10 min per activity bout is recommended. Limited information regarding the effects of short (< 10 min) bouts of activity on health is available, and no studies of the effects of such short bouts of activity on postprandial lipemia have been conducted. OBJECTIVE The objective was to compare the effects of accumulating ten 3-min bouts of exercise with those of one 30-min bout of exercise on postprandial plasma triacylglycerol concentrations. DESIGN Ten men aged 21-32 y completed three 2-d trials > or = 1 wk apart in a randomized repeated-measures design. On day 1, the subjects rested (no exercise) or ran at 70% of maximum oxygen uptake in either ten 3-min bouts (30 min rest between each) or one continuous 30-min bout. On day 2, the subjects rested and consumed test meals (0.69 g fat, 0.95 g carbohydrate, 0.31 g protein, and 46 kJ/kg body mass) for breakfast and lunch. Venous blood samples were obtained in the fasted state and for 7 h postprandially on day 2. RESULTS Postprandial plasma triacylglycerol concentrations were lower throughout day 2 of both the accumulation exercise trial and the continuous exercise trial than during the control trial (main effect of trial: P < 0.001, 2-factor analysis of variance). CONCLUSIONS Accumulating multiple short bouts of exercise throughout the day effectively reduce postprandial plasma triacylglycerol concentrations to an extent similar to that of a single 30-min session of exercise in healthy young men.
