The outbreak of a novel coronavirus was reported in Wuhan, in the Hubei province of China, in December 2019. This virus was officially designated as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) because of its phylogenetic and taxonomic similarities to other coronaviruses. The aim of this review was to understand the viral infection mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2, the clinical features of Covid-19 and the mechanisms through which Covid-19 can be effectively treated with existing drugs. Literature shows that: • SARS-CoV-2 is usually transmitted by inhalation or contact with infected droplets. Inhaled droplets or aerosol carrying the virus then infect and spread through the respiratory tracts. • Severe inflammatory response is a remarkable feature of Covid-19 symptoms. This is caused by delayed viral clearance, which induces chronic systemic inflammation and widespread tissue damage, even leading to cytokine storms. • The incubation period is generally 5-6 days, but it ranges from one day to as much as two weeks. • Interstitial pneumonia and subsequent acute respiratory distress syndrome are the leading causes of death in patients with Covid-19. • There is no licensed treatment for Covid-19, only a combination of antiviral and anti-inflammatory drug treatments are being used. Authors conclude that their finding may provide new insights into the development of therapeutics by understanding the various clinical and basic research studies currently underway.
Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has become a worldwide pandemic. Symptoms range from mild fever to cough, fatigue, severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and organ failure, with a mortality rate of 2.2%. However, there are no licensed drugs or definitive treatment strategies for patients with severe COVID-19. Only antiviral or anti-inflammatory drugs are used as symptomatic treatments based on clinician experience. Basic medical researchers are also trying to develop COVID-19 therapeutics. However, there is limited systematic information about the pathogenesis of COVID-19 symptoms that cause tissue damage or death and the mechanisms by which the virus infects and replicates in cells. Here, we introduce recent knowledge of time course changes in viral titers, delayed virus clearance, and persistent systemic inflammation in patients with severe COVID-19. Based on the concept of drug reposition, we review which antiviral or anti-inflammatory drugs can effectively treat COVID-19 patients based on progressive symptoms and the mechanisms inhibiting virus infection and replication.

The researchers concluded that the available literature suggests that dairy products and dairy proteins have neutral to beneficial effects on biomarkers of inflammation. Additional clinical studies designed using inflammatory biomarkers as the primary outcome are needed to fully understand the effects of dairy intake on inflammation.
Abstract
Systemic inflammation is associated with obesity and chronic disease risk. Intake of dairy foods is associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease; however, the impact of dairy foods on inflammation is not well-established. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review to evaluate the effect of dairy product (milk, cheese, and yogurt) and dairy protein consumption on low-grade systemic inflammation in adults without severe inflammatory disorders. A literature search was completed in September 2019 using PubMed and CENTRAL as well as inspection of reference lists from relevant review articles. The search resulted in the identification of 27 randomized controlled trials which were included in this analysis. In the 19 trials which evaluated dairy products, 10 reported no effect of the intervention, while 8 reported a reduction in at least one biomarker of inflammation. All 8 trials that investigated dairy protein intake on markers of inflammation reported no effect of the intervention. Inflammation is understood to play a major role in in the development of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. There has been considerable research carried out into the anti-inflammatory effects of particular diets, primarily the Mediterranean diet, which has consistently shown the potential to reduce inflammation and promote health. The positive results are consequential of the high intake of fresh fruit and vegetables along with fresh fish and olive oil along with minimal intake of inflammatory foods such as saturated fats and meat. The Nordic diet has similar requisites to the Mediterranean diet only it includes the use of canola oil as opposed to olive oil and includes the consumption of berries. Researchers attribute obesity as the main cause of increased inflammatory markers with weight loss being the most reliable method of reducing markers. They also stress the importance of good quality food, of which the Nordic diet offers. This review paper looks at the anti-inflammatory effect of foods consumed with the Nordic diet and includes research using randomised and controlled dietary trials and observational studies. Investigations into anti-inflammatory properties of the Nordic diet are in their infancy, so it is not yet possible to stipulate anti-inflammatory effects of the Nordic diet, but future research looks promising.
Abstract
Low-grade inflammation (LGI) has been suggested to be involved in the development of chronic diseases. Healthy dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet (MD), may decrease the markers of LGI. Healthy Nordic diet (HND) has many similarities with MD, but its effects on LGI are less well known. Both of these dietary patterns emphasize the abundant use of fruits and vegetables (and berries in HND), whole grain products, fish, and vegetable oil (canola oil in HND and olive oil in MD), but restrict the use of saturated fat and red and processed meat. The aim of this narrative review is to summarize the results of studies, which have investigated the associations or effects of HND on the markers of LGI. Altogether, only two publications of observational studies and eight publications of intervention trials were found through the literature search. Both observational studies reported an inverse association between the adherence to HND and concentration of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). A significant decrease in the concentration of hsCRP was reported in two out of four intervention studies measuring hsCRP. Single intervention studies reported the beneficial effects on interleukin 1Ra and Cathepsin S. Current evidence suggests the beneficial effects on LGI with HND, but more carefully controlled studies are needed to confirm the anti-inflammatory effects of the HND.

The incidence of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases has been increasing worldwide. Changes in environmental factors, such as modern lifestyle, diet, antibiotics and hygiene are thought to play a critical role in the development of various autoimmune diseases. It is the mucosal microbial flora that is shaped by our environment and communicates with the innate and adaptive immune systems, and when disrupted, can lead to the loss of immune tolerance and dysregulated immune cells. This review paper provides an overview of the interactions between the intestinal microbiome and the immune system. It explains how these interactions affect host autoimmunity locally and systemically and sheds light on the molecular mechanisms, utilised by microbes that may contribute to systemic autoimmunity in genetically susceptible individuals. The links between the gut microbiome and various autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis, as well as the gut-liver axis, involving intestinal microbiome and autoimmune liver diseases, are discussed in more detail.
Abstract
Microbial cells significantly outnumber human cells in the body, and the microbial flora at mucosal sites are shaped by environmental factors and, less intuitively, act on host immune responses, as demonstrated by experimental data in germ-free and gnotobiotic studies. Our understanding of this link stems from the established connection between infectious bacteria and immune tolerance breakdown, as observed in rheumatic fever triggered by Streptococci via molecular mimicry, epitope spread and bystander effects. The availability of high-throughput techniques has significantly advanced our capacity to sequence the microbiome and demonstrated variable degrees of dysbiosis in numerous autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and autoimmune liver disease. It remains unknown whether the observed differences are related to the disease pathogenesis or follow the therapeutic and inflammatory changes and are thus mere epiphenomena. In fact, there are only limited data on the molecular mechanisms linking the microbiota to autoimmunity, and microbial therapeutics is being investigated to prevent or halt autoimmune diseases. As a putative mechanism, it is of particular interest that the apoptosis of intestinal epithelial cells in response to microbial stimuli enables the presentation of self-antigens, giving rise to the differentiation of autoreactive Th17 cells and other T helper cells. This comprehensive review will illustrate the data demonstrating the crosstalk between intestinal microbiome and host innate and adaptive immunity, with an emphasis on how dysbiosis may influence systemic autoimmunity. In particular, a gut-liver axis involving the intestinal microbiome and hepatic autoimmunity is elucidated as a paradigm, considering its anatomic and physiological connections.
