Zinc supplementation is associated with a reduction in serum markers of inflammation and oxidative stress in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Zinc (Zn) is a trace metal that is considered to have an impact on chronic inflammation. However, findings of clinical trials have been inconsistent. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to provide a more robust examination of the evidence on the effectiveness of Zn supplements on markers of inflammation and oxidative stress. METHODS A systematic search in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library was undertaken to identify relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the impact of Zn on inflammation and oxidative stress until 17 August 2020. We applied a random-effects method to obtain effect sizes (ES) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Meta-regression was used to detect the potential source of between-study heterogeneity. RESULTS Twenty-one eligible RCTs comprising 1321 participants were included in the meta-analysis. In comparison with the control groups, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) (ES = -0.92 mg/L, 95% CI = [-1.36, -0.48], P < 0.001, I2 = 90.2%), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) (ES = -0.49 pg/mL, 95% CI = [-084, -0.14], P = 0.006, I2 = 34.6%) and malondialdehyde (MDA) (ES = -0.42, 95% CI = [-083, -0.01], P = 0.04, I2 = 76.1%) were significantly reduced in the groups receiving Zn. Serum interleukin 6 (ES = -1.02 pg/mL, 95% CI = [-2.06, 0.02], P = 0.05, I2 = 92.3%) was marginally reduced following Zn supplementation. Moreover, treatment duration was found as the source of inter-study heterogeneity. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis suggests that Zn supplements reduce serum concentrations of markers of inflammation and oxidation: CRP, TNF-α and MDA.

The effects of vitamin E supplementation on malondialdehyde as a biomarker of oxidative stress in haemodialysis patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Haemodialysis (HD) patients tend to have higher levels of oxidative stress (OS), associated with increased morbidity and premature mortality, compared to the general population. Levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), a biomarker of OS, are reduced by the antioxidant properties of vitamin E (VE) but outcomes from randomised control trials of VE supplementation on MDA in HD patients have been inconsistent. METHODS We undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis of adult HD patients from VE supplementation studies with measures of MDA. The following search criteria of MEDLINE and EMBASE were considered from inception to January 2020: 'dialysis' AND 'Vitamin E OR tocopherol' AND 'malondialdehyde OR MDA'. Two reviewers independently extracted study data and assessed risk of bias. Mean MDA levels and standard deviation were determined before and after VE supplementation. Standardised mean difference (SMD) and standard error were calculated as the within person difference and units of measure were not consistently recorded across all studies. The SMD were pooled using random effects meta-analysis. RESULTS The SMD of MDA levels from 18 comparisons was significantly lower in HD patients following VE supplementation (- 1.55; confidence interval: - 2.17 to - 0.94, P < 0.00001). There were significant levels of heterogeneity between studies (I2 value = 91%; P < 0.00001) with evidence of potential publication bias toward smaller studies. CONCLUSIONS Our findings support the use of VE to reduce the effects of OS in HD patients although high levels of heterogeneity and variation in the methodological approaches used by some studies highlight the need for further investigation.

The effect of glutamine supplementation on serum levels of some inflammatory factors, oxidative stress, and appetite in COVID-19 patients: a case-control study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is seen in COVID-19 patients, and reducing malnutrition with appropriate therapies may improve these patients' health. This case-control study aimed to assess and compare serum levels of some inflammatory factors, oxidative stress, and appetite in COVID-19 patients with respiratory infections that receive glutamine treatment with a control group. METHODS In this study, patients who consented to use glutamine were considered as the case group and other patients who did not use glutamine were considered as a control group. Two hundred twenty-two COVID-19 patients (51.2 ± 6.7) using L-Glutamine and 230 COVID-19 patients (51.3 ± 8.2) with similar age, gender, and clinical status, as the control group, were included in the study. For 5 days, the case group consumed 10 g of glutamine supplement three times per day. At the end of the 5 days, blood samples were taken again to test for serum levels of IL1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, malondialdehyde, and total antioxidant capacity, then all data were analyzed. RESULTS Serum levels of β-1 interleukin, tumor necrosis factor-α and hs-CRP were significantly reduced with five days of glutamine supplementation (p < 0.05), and patients' appetite during 5 days of glutamine supplementation compared with the control group had a significant increase (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Glutamine supplementation in COVID-19 patients with respiratory infection significantly reduces serum levels of interleukin-1 β, hs-CRP, and tumor necrosis factor-α and significantly increases appetite, so glutamine supplementation may be useful for COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

Effects of the Consumption of Low-Fat Cooked Ham with Reduced Salt Enriched with Antioxidants on the Improvement of Cardiovascular Health: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to analyze how cardiovascular risk factors can be modified using nutritionally improved cooked ham enriched with a pool of antioxidants to influence relevant metabolic targets. Sixty-five untreated subjects (49.2% males, 50.8% females, mean age 40.92 ± 9.03 years) with total cholesterol level ≥180 mg/dL or LDL cholesterol ≥130 mg/dL participated in a 8-weeks randomized, double-blind controlled trial. Participant in the intervention group (51.5% males, 48.5% females, mean age 41.6 ± 9.8 years and mean BMI 25.1 ± 3.6 kg/m2) consumed cooked ham enriched with antioxidants (100 g/d) and controls (49.9% males, 53.1% females, mean age 40.2 ± 8.3 years and mean BMI 26.3 ± 3.2 kg/m2) received placebo. At 8 weeks, oxidized LDL decreased significantly between experimental and placebo groups (p < 0.036). Experimental group differences were also significant (p < 0.05). Similar findings in malondialdehyde, total cholesterol, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and interleukin 6 were observed in the intervention group. Significant between-group differences in these variables were also found, except for total cholesterol and interleukin 6. The effects on inflammation and oxidation support the direct action of these antioxidants on the etiopathogenic factors of atheromatous plaque. We also observed an improvement in the lipid profiles among the subjects.

Effect of dietary intervention with a legume-based food product on malondialdehyde levels, HOMA index, and lipid profile.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prevalence of overweight and obesity, a condition that promotes development of chronic degenerative diseases, has increased in Mexico in recent years. Implementation of strategies to increase daily consumption of vegetables, legumes, whole grain cereals, and fruits by the population will result in an adequate intake of soluble fiber, antioxidants, protein of vegetable origin, and vitamins. OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of a commercial food product prepared using 6 legumes on some anthropometric and biochemical parameters in apparently healthy subjects. METHODS A randomized dietary intervention trial where subjects in the study group received for three months 15g of the product, administered daily in periods of five days with two days of rest. Before and after intervention, anthropometric and dietary assessments were performed, and serum glucose, lipid profile, insulin, ultrasensitive C-reactive protein, malondialdehyde (MDA) and insulin resistance (HOMA index) were measured. A Mann-Whitney U test was used and values of P<0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS Sixty university students were included in the study (53% males). At the end of the intervention, decreases were seen in serum glucose levels (P=0.001), MDA (P=0.001) and HOMA index (P=0.017), but there were no significant changes in all other parameters. CONCLUSIONS Daily intake of 15g of the legume-based food product improved serum glucose and malondialdehyde levels in the study group, as well as insulin resistance; which could be attributed to the presence of polyphenols and isoflavones such as genistein in legumes.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease in which oxidative stress could play a substantial pathological role. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) has been known as a "universal" and "ideal" antioxidant. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of oral administration of Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant biomarkers in Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. The study was a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial. 70 RA patients were randomized 1:1 to two groups using blocked randomization method and received 1200 mg/day ALA or placebo for 8 weeks. Fasting blood samples were obtained before and after the intervention to analyze total antioxidant capacity (TAC), antioxidant enzymes [superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and arylesterase (ARE) activities] and malondialdehyde (MDA). We observed significant increase in serum TAC (0.11 mmol/L; p=0.033) and ARE (13.76 U/mL; p=0.046) and significant decline in MDA (-0.36 nmol/L; p=0.002), in ALA group. However, these changes in ALA-treated group were not statistically significant when compared with placebo-treated group (p > 0.05). Also, within- and between-group differences of whole blood SOD and GSH-Px were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). In conclusion, unexpectedly, ALA therapy did not affect the oxidative status of RA patients in the present clinical trial. It seems that more comprehensive clinical trials in RA patients are still warranted to clarify the effectiveness of ALA which has been known as a potent antioxidant.

Effect of soy milk consumption on glycemic status, blood pressure, fibrinogen and malondialdehyde in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a randomized controlled trial.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diet plays a critical role in the management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Studies on the NAFLD's experimental models have reported that soy had positive effects on the improvement of metabolic parameters. However, there is a lack of clinical trials regarding the efficacy of whole soy foods. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effect of soy milk on some of the metabolic characteristics in patients with NAFLD. METHODS Sixty-sex patients diagnosed with NAFLD were included in this randomized, parallel, controlled trial and were randomly assigned to either the soy milk or control group. Both groups received a 500-deficit calorie diet plan. Also, patients in the soy milk group consumed 240 ml/day soy milk for 8 weeks. Fasting blood sugar (FBS), serum insulin, HOMA-IR, HOMA-β%, and QUICKI as well as serum malondialdehyde (MDA), plasma fibrinogen, and blood pressure (BP) were measured at the beginning and end of the study. RESULTS After 8-weeks of intervention, soy milk group had a greater significant reduction in serum insulin(-3.44 ± 5.02 vs. -1.09 ± 3.77 μIU/ml, P = 0.04), HOMA-IR (-0.45±0.64 vs -0.14 ± 0.47, P = 0.03), systolic (-3.81±4.15 vs -1.48±2.93 mmHg, P = 0.01) and diastolic (-2.39±2.80 vs. -0.94±2.76 mmHg, P = 0.04) BP, and also, a significant increase in QUICKI (0.02± 0.032 vs. 0.008±0.018, P = 0.04) compared to the control group. While, changes in the FBS, HOMA-β%, fibrinogen, and MDA were not significantly different between the study groups. CONCLUSION A low-calorie diet containing soy milk had beneficial effects on serum insulin, HOMA-IR, QUICKI, and BP in patients with NAFLD.

Inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters as potential early biomarkers for silicosis.

Abstract
Workers involved in mining activities are exposed to crystalline silica, which leads to constant pulmonary inflammatory reactions and severe oxidative damage, resulting in silicosis. In this work, we aimed to evaluate inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters as potential early biomarkers of effect to assess crystalline silica toxicity in workers who had occupational exposure during mining. We enrolled 38 workers exposed to crystalline silica (WECS), 24 individuals with silicosis (IWS), and 30 occupationally unexposed workers (OUW), a total of 92 participants. The WECS were divided into 2 groups, according to the time of exposure: 19 workers with 1-15 years of occupational exposure (WECS I) and 19 workers with >16 years of occupational exposure (WECS II). The inflammatory parameters assessed were L-selectin, β-2 integrin, and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) surface protein expression in lymphocytes and monocytes, complement C3 and C4, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and adenosine deaminase (ADA) in serum. Plasma levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and serum levels of vitamin C were determined as biomarkers of oxidative stress. Biochemical and hematological parameters were also investigated. L-selectin surface protein expression was significantly decreased in the WECS II group (p < 0.05), indicating the importance of this immune system component as a potential marker of crystalline-silica-induced toxicity. The MDA levels were significantly increased in the WECS I, WECS II, and IWS groups compared to the OUW group (p < 0.05). Vitamin C levels were decreased, while C3, hsCRP, ADA, and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were increased in the IWS group compared to the OUW group (p < 0.05). Glucose and urea levels were significantly higher in the WECS I, II, and IWS groups compared to the OUW group (p < 0.05). Negative partial association was found between L-selectin and time of exposure (p < 0.001), supporting the relevance of this biomarker evaluation in long-term exposure to crystalline silica. Significant associations were also observed among inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers. Therefore, our results demonstrated the relevance of L-selectin as a potential peripheral biomarker for monitoring crystalline silica-induced toxicity in miners after chronic exposure, before silicosis has developed. However, more studies are necessary for better understanding of the use L-selectin as an early biomarker in exposed workers.

[Effect of oxytocin on the levels of malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, and s100b protein in newborns].

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of the administration of oxytocin during labor management on the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), and S100B protein in newborns. MATERIALS AND METHODS We selected 80 term pregnant women without obstetric and fetal pathology, forming two groups: pregnant women with normal delivery and pregnant women conducted with oxytocin. Blood was collected immediately after delivery from the umbilical cord vein to measure MDA, ON and from the artery for protein S100B. The concentration of MDA and ON was quantified by spectroscopic methods and the protein S100B by ELISA. RESULTS Values of 3.4 uMol/L and 3.6 uMol/L of MDA and 1.4 uMol/L and 1.8 uMol/L of NO were obtained in the oxytocin and control group, respectively, without significant difference; S100B levels were higher in the oxytocin managed group, with a median of 1.36 μg/L compared to the normal delivery group 1.11 μg/L (p=0.03). There was no relationship between the dose of oxytocin administered and the levels of MDA, ON, and S100B. CONCLUSIONS There is no difference between MDA and NO levels between pregnant women undergoing a normal or managed birth. There is a significant difference in S100B protein levels in newborns born via an oxytocin-managed delivery. There is no relationship between oxytocin dose and levels of oxidative stress and S100B protein.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine the effects of green tea extract on working memory in healthy younger (21 - 29 y) and older (50 - 63 y) women. DESIGN A single-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design was used. SETTING A university laboratory. PARTICIPANTS Twenty non-smoking Caucasian women were recruited in the younger (10) and older (10) age group. INTERVENTION Subjects received 5.4 g green tea extract (at least 45% epigallocatechin-3-gallate) or placebo (cornstarch) within a 24-hour period. MEASUREMENTS Working memory was measured by reading span and N-back task paradigm. Blood sample (20 mL) was collected and measured for plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant capacity (TEAC) concentration. A 24-hour recall was conducted for each treatment period to ensure similar dietary patterns. RESULTS Green tea extract significantly improved reading span performance in older women, indicated by higher absolute and partial scores of reading span. No significant changes were observed in the younger group. N-back latencies and accuracies were not significantly different after green tea treatment in either age group. Plasma concentration of MDA and TEAC were not different after green tea extract in either group. CONCLUSION Acute supplementation of decaffeinated green tea extract may enhance working memory capacity of women between 50 to 63 years of age. This study provides preliminary evidence that consumption of green tea extract may enhance the cognitive performance in older adults and thus provide potential chemopreventive benefits in this group. The mechanism should be explored in future research.
