Following the psychosocial changes in this period of life, there is considerable evidence that reproductive hormones, especially oestrogen, may influence mood. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of saffron tea on the postmenopausal women’s happiness This study was a randomised controlled trial which enrolled postmenopausal women. Participants (n=72) were randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. The intervention was the use of 30 mg dried stigmas of the saffron plant which was boiled once; one cup of saffron tea was consumed daily with white rock candy. Whereas the control group consumed lukewarm water and white rock candy. Results show that saffron herbal tea significantly increased the mean score of happiness in postmenopausal women, and there was a statistically significant difference between the intervention and control groups. Authors conclude that people should consult with their doctor, and in case he/she approves, use complementary therapies such as saffron herbal teas along with other drugs prescribed by the doctor.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that menopause can be associated with a variety of negative psychological changes such as depression and anxiety, and improving the mental health status of women during menopause is one of the important priorities and challenges of the health system. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of saffron (Crocus sativus L., Iridaceae) herbal tea on happiness in postmenopausal women. METHODS In this randomized clinical trial which was conducted in 2021, 72 postmenopausal women were enrolled and divided into intervention and control groups. The randomization blocks method was used for random allocation, and the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire was utilized to measure the scores. The intervention included the use of 30 mg of dried stigmas of the saffron plant, which was boiled once (in the morning, in 300 ml of boiling water for 10-15 min) and consumed with white rock candy as one cup of saffron tea daily. To compare the trend of changes and after removing the effect of other variables, generalized estimating equation (GEE) was used. RESULTS There was no significant difference between the intervention and control groups in any of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics (p > 0.05). The results of paired samples t-test showed that the happiness mean score in the intervention group increased significantly (p < 0.001) from 42.93 ± 8.54 to 61.58 ± 8.24, while in the control group, there was no significant difference between the happiness mean score at the beginning and end of the study (p = 0.861). Also, after applying the treatment program in the intervention group, there was a significant difference between the two groups in terms of the happiness mean scores (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Saffron herbal tea had a positive effect on reducing depression and increasing the happiness score; thus, it is recommended that it should be used as a complementary treatment in consultation with the treating physician. TRIAL REGISTRATION The present study was registered with the code of IRCT20210403050818N1 (Registration date: 09/04/2021) in the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials. It was also approved by the Ethics Committee of Larestan University of Medical Sciences (Approval ID: IR.LARUMS.REC.1399.017).

Tea from the leaves of the tea plant (Camelia sinensis) is consumed around the world. Tea has many health benefits, and in part, this is due to its rich content in compounds classed as polyphenols. Through the fermentation process, black tea is particularly high in polyphenols. Previous studies around respiratory infections indicated that regular consumption of black tea appeared to improve immune defence mechanisms that protect mucous membranes, called mucosal immunity. As this mucosal immunity is closely influenced by gut bacteria, the authors speculated whether the previously seen impact of improved mucosal immunity is related to the ability of black tea to also modulate bacteria in the gut. A previously run randomised single-blinded, placebo-controlled trial with 72 Japanese participants who consumed three cups of black tea (2g) or a placebo of barley tea for 12 weeks provided the data for this study. Data gathered included gut flora analysis, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) levels - fats that play a role in maintaining gut health, and saliva IgA (SIgA) concentrations - which are antibodies made in the lymph tissue of the gut. The results showed that black tea consumption led to a significant increase in the abundance of Prevotella bacteria, which mediate SCFA production and are involved in normalising immune function. Furthermore, tea increased butyrate-producing bacteria. Butyrate is associated with improved barrier function of the gut walls but also helps to manage pathogens and immune responses. Black tea consumption also increased salivary SIgA concentration - a type of antibody on the mucous membranes that prevents pathogens from entering the body -, and a decrease in stool acetic acid concentration, which may be due to the increase in butyrate-producing bacteria which use acetic acid to make butyrate. Notably, participants with low salivary SIgA levels at the start had a more pronounced positive change in total bacteria, after consuming black tea compared to the placebo group. The authors concluded that regular consumption of black tea may help to improve mucosal immunity by increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria in the gut.
Abstract
We previously reported that black tea consumption for 12 wk reduced the risk of acute upper respiratory tract inflammation, and improved secretory capacity in individuals with low salivary SIgA levels (Tanaka Y et al. 2021. Jpn Pharmacol Ther 49: 273-288). These results suggested that habitual black tea consumption improves mucosal immunity. Therefore, in this study we evaluated the effect of black tea intake on gut microbiota, which is known to be involved in mucosal immunity, by analyzing the bacterial flora and the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) concentration of feces collected during the above clinical study. The clinical design was a randomized, single-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled study with 72 healthy Japanese adult males and females, who consumed three cups of black tea (Black Tea Polymerized Polyphenols 76.2 mg per day) or placebo per day for 12 wk. In all subjects intake of black tea significantly increased abundance of Prevotella and decreased fecal acetic acid concentration. Particularly in the subjects with low salivary SIgA levels, the change over time of total bacteria, Prevotella, and butyrate-producing bacteria, which are involved in normalizing immune function, were higher in the black tea group than in the placebo group. In subjects with low abundance of Flavonifractor plautii a butyrate-producing bacteria, black tea consumption significantly increased salivary SIgA concentration and the absolute number of Flavonifractor plautii. In conclusion, our results suggest that improvement of mucosal immunity via an increase in butyrate-producing bacteria in the gut may partly contribute to the suppressive effect of black tea consumption on acute upper respiratory tract inflammation observed in our previous report.

The beneficial effects of green tea and its components are well known. The ingredient L-Theanine is the most abundant water soluble non-proteinous amino acid component in green tea. The second most abundant ingredient is L-Arginine. It also exhibits a high stress-reducing effect. The hypothesis of this study was that the combined ingestion of L-arginine and L-theanine could have beneficial clinical effects for psychological stress compared with ingestion of theanine alone. This study was a randomised placebo-controlled, single-blinded study in healthy young adults. Participants (n=120) were randomly assigned to one of the three groups (1:1:1); L-theanine alone, L-theanine and L-arginine or placebo. Results show that combined ingestion of L-theanine and L-arginine tended to have greater stress reducing effects than ingestion of L-theanine alone. However, the difference was not statistically significant. Authors conclude that their findings are suggestive of synergistic effects of L-theanine and L-arginine against stress in young adults.
Abstract
l-Theanine, the most abundant amino acid component in green tea, has anti-stress effects and refreshes the mental state. A recent study demonstrated that l-arginine, the second most abundant amino acid in green tea, might enhance the anti-stress effects of l-theanine. The aim of this study was to evaluated the effects of combined ingestion of l-theanine and l-arginine on psychological stress in humans. A randomized placebo-controlled trial was conducted including 120 healthy young adults (mean age 22.4 y, 63.3% female). Subjects were randomly assigned to theanine (200 mg l-theanine), combined theanine/arginine (200 mg l-theanine, 50 mg l-arginine), or placebo groups. After consuming a test beverage, we administered a stress-loading test (Uchida-Kraepelin performance test) and performed salivary alpha-amylase activity (sAA) measurements to assess the physiological stress response at 0 min (immediately after), 5 min, and 15 min. The changes in sAA at 15 min after the stress-loading test were -2.75 (11.2) kIU/L in the theanine/arginine group, -0.40 (11.5) kIU/L in the theanine group, and 6.95 (18.6) kIU/L in the placebo group. The values in the theanine/arginine (p=0.007) and theanine (p=0.02) groups differed significantly from those in the placebo group. However, the difference between theanine/arginine and theanine groups, was not statistically significant (p=0.74). From this study, no clear conclusion could be drawn regarding the potentiating effect of theanine and arginine combined ingestion on anti-stress effects in human.

Ageing and the emergence of age-associated illnesses are currently one of the main health challenges in our society. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is closely associated with ageing and is characterized by progressive memory loss and severe dementia. Currently, there are no therapy options available that halt the progression of the disease. Despite the condition being known for decades, the definitive causes and pathways of the disease and its development are not fully understood. Many drug developments that target some of the known aspects of the disease have failed in the clinical stages, and for nearly 20 years, no new drugs have met FDA approval for the treatment of AD. As increasing evidence suggests diet is an influencing risk factor for AD, the concept of exploring cost-effective, food-derived novel substances with low adverse effects has become more attractive. The first part of this work discusses AD, the prevalence of cognitive decline, limitations of current therapies, the three hallmarks of the disease (autophagy, neuroinflammation, and senescence) and the potential role of food derived substances (nutraceuticals). The second part introduces three nutraceuticals of interest, being epigallocatechin gallate, fisetin, and spermidine. All three compounds have captured scientific interest in regards to aspects of longevity over the recent years. In detail are discussed the current evidence of these compounds concerning autophagy, neuroinflammation, and senescence. This article yields a comprehensive summary of the current evidence from epigallocatechin gallate, fisetin, and spermidine and their potential role in the clinical management of AD.
Abstract

The results imply a positive outlook for the reviewed substances to qualify as a novel treatment option for AD. A combination of nutraceutical substances and other preventive measures could have significant clinical impact in a multi-layered therapy approach to counter AD.

Brewed tea is obtained from the infusion of leaves and buds of Camellia sinensis. The most consumed types of tea are green and black tea. Due to the high content of antioxidant compounds, a great deal of attention has been given to green tea regarding the possible prevention of chronic diseases and cancer, as well as possible beneficial effects on cardiovascular disease, insulin sensitivity and lipid profiles. The main aim of this review was to assess the association between green tea consumption and the risk of developing cancer in epidemiologic studies. This study is an update of a previously published Cochrane review based on studies in which participants consumed green tea orally, either as drinkable tea or as extracts. One hundred and forty-two epidemiological studies of experimental and nonexperimental design were included with a total of 1,100,000 participants. Findings yielded inconsistent results for the effect of green tea consumption on cancer risk, despite some indications of a beneficial effect of green tea on a few site-specific cancers. Authors conclude that the epidemiological evidence appears to be still inadequate to support a beneficial effect of green tea on cancer risk.
Abstract
BACKGROUND This review is an update of a previously published review in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (2009, Issue 3).Tea is one of the most commonly consumed beverages worldwide. Teas from the plant Camellia sinensis can be grouped into green, black and oolong tea, and drinking habits vary cross-culturally. C sinensis contains polyphenols, one subgroup being catechins. Catechins are powerful antioxidants, and laboratory studies have suggested that these compounds may inhibit cancer cell proliferation. Some experimental and nonexperimental epidemiological studies have suggested that green tea may have cancer-preventative effects. OBJECTIVES To assess possible associations between green tea consumption and the risk of cancer incidence and mortality as primary outcomes, and safety data and quality of life as secondary outcomes. SEARCH METHODS We searched eligible studies up to January 2019 in CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov, and reference lists of previous reviews and included studies. SELECTION CRITERIA We included all epidemiological studies, experimental (i.e. randomised controlled trials (RCTs)) and nonexperimental (non-randomised studies, i.e. observational studies with both cohort and case-control design) that investigated the association of green tea consumption with cancer risk or quality of life, or both. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two or more review authors independently applied the study criteria, extracted data and assessed methodological quality of studies. We summarised the results according to diagnosis of cancer type. MAIN RESULTS In this review update, we included in total 142 completed studies (11 experimental and 131 nonexperimental) and two ongoing studies. This is an additional 10 experimental and 85 nonexperimental studies from those included in the previous version of the review. Eleven experimental studies allocated a total of 1795 participants to either green tea extract or placebo, all demonstrating an overall high methodological quality based on 'Risk of bias' assessment. For incident prostate cancer, the summary risk ratio (RR) in the green tea-supplemented participants was 0.50 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.18 to 1.36), based on three studies and involving 201 participants (low-certainty evidence). The summary RR for gynaecological cancer was 1.50 (95% CI 0.41 to 5.48; 2 studies, 1157 participants; low-certainty evidence). No evidence of effect of non-melanoma skin cancer emerged (summary RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.06 to 15.92; 1 study, 1075 participants; low-certainty evidence). In addition, adverse effects of green tea extract intake were reported, including gastrointestinal disorders, elevation of liver enzymes, and, more rarely, insomnia, raised blood pressure and skin/subcutaneous reactions. Consumption of green tea extracts induced a slight improvement in quality of life, compared with placebo, based on three experimental studies. In nonexperimental studies, we included over 1,100,000 participants from 46 cohort studies and 85 case-control studies, which were on average of intermediate to high methodological quality based on Newcastle-Ottawa Scale 'Risk of bias' assessment. When comparing the highest intake of green tea with the lowest, we found a lower overall cancer incidence (summary RR 0.83, 95% CI 0.65 to 1.07), based on three studies, involving 52,479 participants (low-certainty evidence). Conversely, we found no association between green tea consumption and cancer-related mortality (summary RR 0.99, 95% CI 0.91 to 1.07), based on eight studies and 504,366 participants (low-certainty evidence). For most of the site-specific cancers we observed a decreased RR in the highest category of green tea consumption compared with the lowest one. After stratifying the analysis according to study design, we found strongly conflicting results for some cancer sites: oesophageal, prostate and urinary tract cancer, and leukaemia showed an increased RR in cohort studies and a decreased RR or no difference in case-control studies. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Overall, findings from experimental and nonexperimental epidemiological studies yielded inconsistent results, thus providing limited evidence for the beneficial effect of green tea consumption on the overall risk of cancer or on specific cancer sites. Some evidence of a beneficial effect of green tea at some cancer sites emerged from the RCTs and from case-control studies, but their methodological limitations, such as the low number and size of the studies, and the inconsistencies with the results of cohort studies, limit the interpretability of the RR estimates. The studies also indicated the occurrence of several side effects associated with high intakes of green tea. In addition, the majority of included studies were carried out in Asian populations characterised by a high intake of green tea, thus limiting the generalisability of the findings to other populations. Well conducted and adequately powered RCTs would be needed to draw conclusions on the possible beneficial effects of green tea consumption on cancer risk.

In this systematic review, the authors reviewed eight previous studies examining the effects of green tea on dementia. Six of the eight studies supported a preventative effect of green tea intake. Abstract
Dementia has become a major issue that requires urgent measures. The prevention of dementia may be influenced by dietary factors. We focused on green tea and performed a systematic review of observational studies that examined the association between green tea intake and dementia, Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, or cognitive impairment. We searched for articles registered up to 23 August 2018, in the PubMed database and then for references of original articles or reviews that examined tea and cognition. Subsequently, the extracted articles were examined regarding whether they included original data assessing an association of green tea intake and dementia, Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, or cognitive impairment. Finally, we included three cohort studies and five cross-sectional studies. One cohort study and three cross-sectional studies supported the positive effects of green tea intake. One cohort study and one cross-sectional study reported partial positive effects. The remaining one cohort study and one cross-sectional study showed no significant association of green tea intake. These results seem to support the hypothesis that green tea intake might reduce the risk for dementia, Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, or cognitive impairment. Further results from well-designed and well-conducted cohort studies are required to derive robust evidence.

This meta-analysis and literature review looked at previous human, animal and laboratory studies that might give an indication of the mechanisms by which drinking tea can lead to a reduced depression risk. Tea contains many different active compounds such as L-theanine, various polyphenols and polyphenol metabolites that have effects on the immune system, stress response, brain neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, and gut bacteria. Different types of tea such as black, green or oolong tea contain different amounts of active compounds. The authors found that these compounds are capable of functioning through multiple pathways simultaneously that together reduce the risk of depression. The authors concluded that daily consumption of moderate amounts of different types of tea may offer significant potential benefit in the risk reduction of depression.
Abstract
This article is a comprehensive review of the literature pertaining to the antidepressant effects and mechanisms of regular tea consumption. Meta-data supplemented with recent observational studies were first analyzed to assess the association between tea consumption and depression risk. The literature reported risk ratios (RR) were 0.69 with 95% confidence intervals of 0.62-0.77. Next, we thoroughly reviewed human trials, mouse models, and in vitro experiments to determine the predominant mechanisms underlying the observed linear relationship between tea consumption and reduced risk of depression. Current theories on the neurobiology of depression were utilized to map tea-mediated mechanisms of antidepressant activity onto an integrated framework of depression pathology. The major nodes within the network framework of depression included hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hyperactivity, inflammation, weakened monoaminergic systems, reduced neurogenesis/neuroplasticity, and poor microbiome diversity affecting the gut-brain axis. We detailed how each node has subsystems within them, including signaling pathways, specific target proteins, or transporters that interface with compounds in tea, mediating their antidepressant effects. A major pathway was found to be the ERK/CREB/BDNF signaling pathway, up-regulated by a number of compounds in tea including teasaponin, L-theanine, EGCG and combinations of tea catechins and their metabolites. Black tea theaflavins and EGCG are potent anti-inflammatory agents via down-regulation of NF-κB signaling. Multiple compounds in tea are effective modulators of dopaminergic activity and the gut-brain axis. Taken together, our findings show that constituents found in all major tea types, predominantly L-theanine, polyphenols and polyphenol metabolites, are capable of functioning through multiple pathways simultaneously to collectively reduce the risk of depression.

The prevalence of obesity and related chronic diseases is continuously increasing. Insulin resistance is a major risk factor for the progression of obesity toward chronic metabolic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Polyphenols were identified as dietary ingredients with antioxidant properties decades ago. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which is most abundant in green tea, and resveratrol (RS), which is present in grape skins, have been implicated in the prevention of body weight gain and improvements in markers of insulin sensitivity in human and animal studies. The aim of this randomised control study was to investigate the longer-term effect of EGCG and RES (EGCG+RES) supplementation on metabolic profile, mitochondrial capacity, fat oxidation, lipolysis, and tissue-specific insulin sensitivity. 38 overweight and obese men and women received supplementation with either EGCG+RES (282 and 80 mg/d, respectively) or a placebo for 12 weeks. Before and after the intervention, oxidative capacity, lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity were measured. EGCG+RES supplementation did not affect the fasting plasma metabolic profile. Although whole-body fat mass was not affected, visceral adipose tissue mass decreased after the intervention compared with placebo. EGCG+RES supplementation significantly increased oxidative capacity in muscle fibres. Fat oxidation and energy expenditure were not significantly affected by EGCG+RES. Finally, EGCG+RES had no effect on insulin-stimulated glucose disposal, suppression of endogenous glucose production, or lipolysis. The authors concluded that 12 weeks of EGCG+RES supplementation increased mitochondrial capacity and stimulated fat oxidation compared with placebo, and this may improve physical condition and play a role in the prevention of weight gain and worsening of insulin resistance in the long term.

- 38 overweight and obese subjects (active ingredient cohort n = 18; placebo n = 20) received 282 mg/d EGCG and 80 mg/d resveratrol; one capsule of each was taken at breakfast and dinner. Subjects were medically screened 10 times in total, including: 3 times before starting supplementation, 3 times during the supplementation period, and 3 in the last week of supplementation.
- EGCG capsules contained 94% epigallocatechin-3-gallate (141 mg/capsule) and resveratrol capsules contained 20% trans-resveratrol (40 mg trans-resveratrol in Polygonum cuspidatum extract/capsule).

Considerations for future research:
- The EGCG+RES supplementation had no effect on postprandial glucose, insulin and FFA concentrations or local interstitial glucose and glycerol concentrations. Altering the study parameters in the future might identify changes of these markers.
- There was a tendency toward visceral adipose tissue mass decrease that was not considered significant, but altering dosage and length of time of a similar study might result in a more notable outcome related to weight loss, which was a targeted endpoint
- The combined supplements were not found to affect energy expenditure, contrary to a previous study by the same team, which was for a much shorter time period. It would be interesting to identify why this was.
- Complex and numerous gene set enrichment analyses were performed indicating that the most upregulated pathways after EGCG+RES supplementation were related to the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain, whereas pathways related to CHO metabolism were upregulated in the placebo group. This was taken to indicate that the increased mitochondrial capacity after EGCG +RES supplementation is accompanied by changes at the transcriptional and translational levels; further follow-up of this would be useful to know what clinical impact this has longer term
Abstract
BACKGROUND The obese insulin-resistant state is characterized by impairments in lipid metabolism. We previously showed that 3-d supplementation of combined epigallocatechin-3-gallate and resveratrol (EGCG+RES) increased energy expenditure and improved the capacity to switch from fat toward carbohydrate oxidation with a high-fat mixed meal (HFMM) test in men. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to investigate the longer-term effect of EGCG+RES supplementation on metabolic profile, mitochondrial capacity, fat oxidation, lipolysis, and tissue-specific insulin sensitivity. DESIGN In this randomized double-blind study, 38 overweight and obese subjects [18 men; aged 38 ± 2 y; body mass index (kg/m(2)): 29.7 ± 0.5] received either EGCG+RES (282 and 80 mg/d, respectively) or placebo for 12 wk. Before and after the intervention, oxidative capacity and gene expression were assessed in skeletal muscle. Fasting and postprandial (HFMM) lipid metabolism was assessed by using indirect calorimetry, blood sampling, and microdialysis. Tissue-specific insulin sensitivity was assessed by a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp with [6,6-(2)H2]-glucose infusion. RESULTS EGCG+RES supplementation did not affect the fasting plasma metabolic profile. Although whole-body fat mass was not affected, visceral adipose tissue mass tended to decrease after the intervention compared with placebo (P-time × treatment = 0.09). EGCG+RES supplementation significantly increased oxidative capacity in permeabilized muscle fibers (P-time × treatment < 0.05, P-EGCG+RES < 0.05). Moreover, EGCG+RES reduced fasting (P-time × treatment = 0.03) and postprandial respiratory quotient (P-time × treatment = 0.01) compared with placebo. Fasting and postprandial fat oxidation was not significantly affected by EGCG+RES (P-EGCG+RES = 0.46 and 0.38, respectively) but declined after placebo (P-placebo = 0.05 and 0.03, respectively). Energy expenditure was not altered (P-time × treatment = 0.96). Furthermore, EGCG+RES supplementation attenuated the increase in plasma triacylglycerol concentrations during the HFMM test that was observed after placebo (P-time × treatment = 0.04, P-placebo = 0.01). Finally, EGCG+RES had no effect on insulin-stimulated glucose disposal, suppression of endogenous glucose production, or lipolysis. CONCLUSION Twelve weeks of EGCG+RES supplementation increased mitochondrial capacity and stimulated fat oxidation compared with placebo, but this did not translate into increased tissue-specific insulin sensitivity in overweight and obese subjects. Green tea catechins have been shown to play a role in body weight regulation though the mechanism is poorly understood. Few studies have investigated the effect of catechins on the gut microbiota. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether green tea supplementation induces changes in the composition of the human gut microbiota. 58 participants were randomised to consume either green tea or placebo capsules for 12 weeks. Faecal samples were collected and total bacterial profiles were analysed at the baseline and end of the trial. According to this study, there were no significant changes in the composition of the gut microbiota, nor in body weight and body fat, among those receiving the green tea capsules compared with the control group. The authors conclude that this may be due to the gut microbiota differences among overweight and normal weight individuals.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Green tea catechins may play a role in body weight regulation through interactions with the gut microbiota. AIM: We examined whether green tea supplementation for 12 weeks induces changes in composition of the human gut microbiota. METHODS 58 Caucasian men and women were included in a randomized, placebo-controlled design. For 12 weeks, subjects consumed either green tea (>0.56 g/d epigallocatechin-gallate + 0.28 ∼ 0.45 g/d caffeine) or placebo capsules. Fecal samples were collected twice (baseline, vs. week 12) for analyses of total bacterial profiles by means of IS-profiling, a 16S-23S interspacer region-based profiling method. RESULTS No significant changes between baseline and week 12 in subjects receiving green tea or placebo capsules, and no significant interactions between treatment (green tea or placebo) and time (baseline and week 12) were observed for body composition. Analysis of the fecal samples in subjects receiving green tea and placebo showed similar bacterial diversity and community structures, indicating there were no significant changes in bacterial diversity between baseline and week 12 in subjects receiving green tea capsules or in subjects receiving placebo capsules. No significant interactions were observed between treatment (green tea or placebo) and time (baseline and week 12) for the gut microbial diversity. Although, there were no significant differences between normal weight and overweight subjects in response to green tea, we did observe a reduced bacterial alpha diversity in overweight as compared to normal weight subjects (p = 0.002). CONCLUSION Green tea supplementation for 12 weeks did not have a significant effect on composition of the gut microbiota. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01556321.

The most investigated risk factors for Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (Liver cancer) are alcohol, diet and obesity. This cohort study looks at tea and coffee (caffeinated and decaffeinated) consumption with HCC risk using data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and nutrition study (EPIC). The EPIC study recruited 521,000 apparently healthy participants, aged 25-70 years, from 10 European countries between 1992 and 2000. Their diets were assessed by questionnaire alongside biometric data and other lifestyle factors. The researchers were able to identify 201 HCC cases among 486,799 men/women, after a median follow-up of 11 years. Some data had to be excluded based on cultural tea and coffee drinking habits (particularly lack of data from certain nationalities). There was coffee data from 163,672 participants drinking an overall median of 354 ml/d among men and 290 ml/d among women. The results found that increased coffee intake in participants in the highest compared to the lowest quintile had a lower HCC risk by 72%. There was no significant data for decaffeinated coffee. Tea drinkers represented just 66% of the total cohort and median intakes were 107 ml/d for men and 190 ml/d for women. Tea intake was also inversely associated with HCC incidence with 60% lower HCC risk. The study concludes that intakes of coffee and, to a lesser extent, tea are associated with lower HCC incidence. The incidence of HCC in participants was low so further studies are necessary.
Abstract
Inverse associations of coffee and/or tea in relation to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk have been consistently identified in studies conducted mostly in Asia where consumption patterns of such beverages differ from Europe. In the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and nutrition (EPIC), we identified 201 HCC cases among 486,799 men/women, after a median follow-up of 11 years. We calculated adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for HCC incidence in relation to quintiles/categories of coffee/tea intakes. We found that increased coffee and tea intakes were consistently associated with lower HCC risk. The inverse associations were substantial, monotonic and statistically significant. Coffee consumers in the highest compared to the lowest quintile had lower HCC risk by 72% [HR: 0.28; 95% confidence intervals (CIs): 0.16-0.50, p-trend < 0.001]. The corresponding association of tea with HCC risk was 0.41 (95% CI: 0.22-0.78, p-trend = 0.003). There was no compelling evidence of heterogeneity of these associations across strata of important HCC risk factors, including hepatitis B or hepatitis C status (available in a nested case-control study). The inverse, monotonic associations of coffee intake with HCC were apparent for caffeinated (p-trend = 0.009), but not decaffeinated (p-trend = 0.45) coffee for which, however, data were available for a fraction of subjects. Results from this multicentre, European cohort study strengthen the existing evidence regarding the inverse association between coffee/tea and HCC risk. Given the apparent lack of heterogeneity of these associations by HCC risk factors and that coffee/tea are universal exposures, our results could have important implications for high HCC risk subjects.
