Participants completed a 24-hour dietary intake recall and behaviour questionnaire at age 11-13yrs, and then again at age 21-23yrs. Body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugar were measured. The researchers found that dietary behaviours such as skipping breakfast and a low intake of fruit and vegetables were common. Rates of skipping breakfast and low fruit and vegetable consumption were highest among Black African and Black Caribbean participants. BMI and cholesterol levels in young adults were higher among those who regularly skipped breakfast. The researchers concluded that skipping breakfast is more common in certain ethnic groups and is associated with risk factors for chronic disease in young adults. They suggest that interventions to improve dietary habits could be targeted at specific population groups.
Abstract
Unfavourable dietary habits, such as skipping breakfast, are common among ethnic minority children and may contribute to inequalities in cardiometabolic disease. We conducted a longitudinal follow-up of a subsample of the UK multi-ethnic Determinants of Adolescent Social well-being and Health cohort, which represents the main UK ethnic groups and is now aged 21-23 years. We aimed to describe longitudinal patterns of dietary intake and investigate their impact on cardiometabolic risk in young adulthood. Participants completed a dietary behaviour questionnaire and a 24 h dietary intake recall; anthropometry, blood pressure, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol and HbA1c were measured. The cohort consisted of 107 White British, 102 Black Caribbean, 132 Black African, 98 Indian, 111 Bangladeshi/Pakistani and 115 other/mixed ethnicity. Unhealthful dietary behaviours such as skipping breakfast and low intake of fruits and vegetables were common (56, 57 and 63 %, respectively). Rates of skipping breakfast and low fruit and vegetable consumption were highest among Black African and Black Caribbean participants. BMI and cholesterol levels at 21-23 years were higher among those who regularly skipped breakfast at 11-13 years (BMI 1·41 (95 % CI 0·57, 2·26), P=0·001; cholesterol 0·15 (95 % CI -0·01, 0·31), P=0·063) and at 21-23 years (BMI 1·05 (95 % CI 0·22, 1·89), P=0·014; cholesterol 0·22 (95 % CI 0·06, 0·37), P=0·007). Childhood breakfast skipping is more common in certain ethnic groups and is associated with cardiometabolic risk factors in young adulthood. Our findings highlight the importance of targeting interventions to improve dietary behaviours such as breakfast consumption at specific population groups.

This study includes the prospective results from the first six months of the CEBA project (chronic fatigue following acute Epstein-Barr virus infection in adolescents), which encompasses a prospective, a cross-sectional and a randomized controlled design with a total follow-up time of 21 months. A total of 200 adolescents with EBV and 70 healthy controls were included. Results indicate that fatigue six months after acute EBV infection is significantly and independently predicted by baseline clinical symptoms, functional impairments, negative emotions, verbal memory, plasma c-reactive protein (CRP) and plasma vitamin B12. On average, baseline CRP levels were significantly lower in the acute EBV infection group as compared to healthy controls. Authors conclude that development of fatigue is to a larger extent predicted by baseline variables related to symptoms and functions than to baseline variables reflecting infectious and immune processes.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION Acute Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is a trigger of chronic fatigue and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). This study investigated baseline predictors of chronic fatigue six months after an acute EBV infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 200 adolescents (12-20 years old) with acute EBV infection were assessed for 149 possible baseline predictors and followed prospectively. We performed linear regression to assess possible associations between baseline predictors and fatigue (Chalder Fatigue Questionnaire total score) six months after the acute EBV infection. A total of 70 healthy controls were included for cross-sectional reference. This study is part of the CEBA-project (Chronic fatigue following acute Epstein-Barr virus infection in adolescents). RESULTS In the final multiple linear regression model, fatigue six months after acute EBV infection was significantly and independently predicted by the following baseline variables (regression coefficient B[95% CI]): Sensory sensitivity (0.8[0.09-1.6]), pain severity (0.2[0.02-0.3]), functional impairment (1000 steps/day) (-0.3[-0.5 to -0.08]), negative emotions (anxiety) (0.4[0.2-0.6]), verbal memory (correct word recognition) (1.7[0.1-3.3]), plasma C-reactive protein (2.8[1.1-4.4] for CRP values >0.86) and plasma Vitamin B12 (-0.005[-0.01 to -0.001]). CONCLUSIONS Development of fatigue after acute EBV infection is to a larger extent predicted by baseline variables related to symptoms and functions than to baseline variables reflecting infectious and immune processes. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can trigger chronic fatigue (CF) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) in individuals who are predisposed. However, how fatigue develops and how infections may trigger this is not fully understood. This exploratory cross-sectional study of 200 fatigued and non-fatigued adolescents 6 months after EBV aimed to understand symptoms and potential markers for disease. The results showed that all symptoms (not just fatigue) were more pronounced in those individuals suffering from fatigue, despite no increases in viral load. Those with fatigue only had slight changes in immune, nerve and hormonal markers and none correlated with severity of symptoms. It was concluded that there is a discrepancy between symptoms and viral load and alterations to several markers were only marginal. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand the possible limitations of using several biomarkers as a diagnostic tool for CF and CFS.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION Acute Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is a trigger of chronic fatigue (CF) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). The aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore clinical symptoms as well as markers of disease mechanisms in fatigued and non-fatigued adolescents 6 months after EBV-infection, and in healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 200 adolescents (12-20 years old) with acute EBV infection were assessed 6 months after the initial infectious event and divided into fatigued (EBV CF+) and non-fatigued (EBV CF-) cases based on questionnaire score. The EBV CF+ cases were further sub-divided according to case definitions of CFS. In addition, a group of 70 healthy controls with similar distribution of sex and age was included. Symptoms were mapped with a questionnaire. Laboratory assays included EBV PCR and serology; detailed blood leukocyte phenotyping and serum high-sensitive C-reactive protein; and plasma and urine cortisol and catecholamines. Assessment of autonomic activity was performed with continuous, non-invasive monitoring of cardiovascular variables during supine rest, controlled breathing and upright standing. Differences between EBV CF+ and EBV CF- were assessed by simple and multiple linear regression adjusting for sex as well as symptoms of depression and anxiety. A p-value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. This study is part of the CEBA-project (Chronic fatigue following acute Epstein-Barr virus infection in adolescents). RESULTS The EBV CF+ group had significantly higher scores for all clinical symptoms. All markers of infection and most immune, neuroendocrine and autonomic markers were similar across the EBV CF+ and EBV CF- group. However, the EBV CF+ group had slightly higher serum C-reactive protein (0.48 vs 0.43 mg/L, p = 0.031, high-sensitive assay), total T cell (CD3+) count (median 1573 vs 1481 × 106 cells/L, p = 0.012), plasma norepinephrine (1420 vs 1113 pmol/L, p = 0.01) and plasma epinephrine (363 vs 237 nmol/L, p = 0.032); lower low-frequency:high frequency (LF/HF) ratio of heart rate variability at supine rest (0.63 vs 0.76, p = 0.008); and an attenuated decline in LF/HF ratio during controlled breathing (-0.11 vs -0.25, p = 0.002). Subgrouping according to different CFS diagnostic criteria did not significantly alter the results. Within the EBV CF+ group, there were no strong correlations between clinical symptoms and markers of disease mechanisms. In a multiple regression analysis, serum CRP levels were independently associated with serum cortisol (B = 4.5 × 10-4, p < 0.001), urine norepinephrine (B = 9.6 × 10-2, p = 0.044) and high-frequency power of heart rate variability (B = -3.7 × 10-2, p = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS In adolescents, CF and CFS 6 months after acute EBV infection are associated with high symptom burden, but no signs of increased viral load and only subtle alterations of immune, autonomic, and neuroendocrine markers of which no one is strongly correlated with symptom scores. A slight sympathetic over parasympathetic predominance is evident in CF and might explain slightly increased CRP levels.

L-theanine (γ-glutamylethylamide) is a unique non-protein amino acid found in green tea (Camellia sinensis), a widely consumed beverage associated with human health. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of four weeks L-theanine administration (200 mg/day, four weeks) in a healthy population, i.e., individuals without any major psychiatric disorder. This study is a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover, and double-blind trial. The study enrolled thirty individuals (n = 9 men and n = 21 women). Participants received either an enzymatic synthetic product L-theanine or placebo tablets who had to orally self-administer before sleep each night for four weeks. Results show that four weeks L-theanine administration has positive effects on stress-related symptoms and cognitive function in a healthy population. Furthermore, the reduction in sleep quality problems (disturbances in sleep latency, sleep disturbance and use of sleep medication) was greater in the L-theanine administration compared to the placebo administration, while verbal fluency, especially letter fluency, was improved in the L-theanine administration among individuals who showed relatively low performance at pre-treatment. Authors conclude that L-theanine may be a suitable nutraceutical ingredient for improving mental conditions in a healthy population.
Abstract
This randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover, and double-blind trial aimed to examine the possible effects of four weeks L-theanine administration on stress-related symptoms and cognitive functions in healthy adults. Participants were 30 individuals (nine men and 21 women; age: 48.3 ± 11.9 years) who had no major psychiatric illness. L-theanine (200 mg/day) or placebo tablets were randomly and blindly assigned for four-week administration. For stress-related symptoms, Self-rating Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-trait, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores decreased after L-theanine administration (p = 0.019, 0.006, and 0.013, respectively). The PSQI subscale scores for sleep latency, sleep disturbance, and use of sleep medication reduced after L-theanine administration, compared to the placebo administration (all p < 0.05). For cognitive functions, verbal fluency and executive function scores improved after L-theanine administration (p = 0.001 and 0.031, respectively). Stratified analyses revealed that scores for verbal fluency (p = 0.002), especially letter fluency (p = 0.002), increased after L-theanine administration, compared to the placebo administration, in individuals who were sub-grouped into the lower half by the median split based on the mean pretreatment scores. Our findings suggest that L-theanine has the potential to promote mental health in the general population with stress-related ailments and cognitive impairments.

Colorectal cancer is associated with higher intakes of meat and lower consumption of fibre. Fibre may alter cholesterol and bile acid production and high bile acids may cause changes in the cells of the colon. Vegan diets high in fibre and low in fat may affect bile acid production and this observational study of 72 people aimed to compare bile acids in the faeces and blood of vegans and omnivores. The results showed that vegans had higher fibre and lower fat intakes, compared to omnivores, and although bile acids in the faeces were lower in vegans, blood levels were higher. Fat intake was associated with increased bile acids in the faeces whereas fibre intake was associated with lower levels. Coffee, fish, margarine, fried potatoes, bread, and processed meat were all associated with increased bile acids in the faeces and muesli was associated with lower levels. It was concluded that high fibre, low-fat intakes characteristic of vegan diets, are associated with lower bile acids in the faeces and this could impact colorectal cancer incidence. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to recommend a vegan diet high in fibre and low in saturated fat to individuals with colorectal cancer or those who are at an increased risk.
Abstract
Bile acids play an active role in fat metabolism and, in high-fat diets, elevated concentrations of fecal bile acids may be related to an increased risk of colorectal cancer. This study investigated concentrations of fecal and serum bile acids in 36 vegans and 36 omnivores. The reduced rank regression was used to identify dietary patterns associated with fecal bile acids. Dietary patterns were derived with secondary and conjugated fecal bile acids as response variables and 53 food groups as predictors. Vegans had higher fiber (p < 0.01) and lower fat (p = 0.0024) intake than omnivores. In serum, primary and glycine-conjugated bile acids were higher in vegans than in omnivores (p ≤ 0.01). All fecal bile acids were significantly lower in vegans compared to omnivores (p < 0.01). Processed meat, fried potatoes, fish, margarine, and coffee contributed most positively, whereas muesli most negatively to a dietary pattern that was directly associated with all fecal bile acids. According to the pattern, fat intake was positively and fiber intake was inversely correlated with bile acids. The findings contribute to the evidence that, in particular, animal products and fat may play a part in higher levels of fecal bile acids.

Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) represents an important and essential water-soluble nutrient involved in the formation of erythrocytes, in the maintenance of the central nervous system, and in cognitive performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of two different doses (350ug/week vs 2000 mg/week) of sublingual supplements in improving the nutritional status of cyanocobalamin in a group of vegans and vegetarians with a marginal deficiency. Forty subjects were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups of 20 subjects each for a 12-week double-blind (participants and outcome assessors), randomised, controlled, parallel dietary intervention study. Results indicate that as a little as 350ug per week of vitamin B12 supplementation was enough to correct a marginal deficiency of cobalamin and to improve biomarkers of cobalamin status in a group of vegans and vegetarians. Authors conclude that even though vitamin B12 supplementation is important for vegetarians and vegans with a marginal deficiency, the absence of a consensus on vitamin B12 cut-off values and the high individual variability make it difficult to identify the real needs for vegans and vegetarians.
Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Vegetarians and vegans are more vulnerable to vitamin B12 deficiency with severe risks of megaloblastic anemia, cognitive decline, neuropathy, and depression. An easy and simple method of supplementation consists of taking one weekly dosage of 2000 μg. However, single large oral doses of vitamin B12 are poorly absorbed. The present research evaluates the ability of two different sublingual dosages of vitamin B12 (350 μg/week vs 2000 μg/week) in improving cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) nutritional status in vegans and vegetarians with a marginal deficiency. METHODS A 12-week randomized, double-blind, controlled, parallel intervention trial was performed. Forty subjects with marginal vitamin B12 deficiency were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups: test group Ld (low dose, 350 μg/week) and control group Hd (high dose, 2000 μg/week) vitamin B12 supplementation. Blood samples were collected at baseline and after 15, 30, 60, and 90 days from the intervention for the determination of vitamin B12, related metabolic markers, and blood cell counts. RESULTS Two-way analysis of variance showed a significant effect of time (P < 0.0001) and of time × treatment interaction (P = 0.012) on serum concentration of vitamin B12 that increased after 90-day supplementation (Ld and Hd) compared to baseline. Both the supplements increased (P < 0.0001, time effect) the levels of holotranscobalamin, succinic acid, methionine and wellness parameter, while decreased (P < 0.0001, time effect) the levels of methylmalonic acid, homocysteine and folate compared to baseline. No difference was observed between groups (Ld vs Hd). No effect was detected for vitamin B6 and blood cell count. CONCLUSIONS In our experimental conditions, both supplements were able to restore adequate serum concentrations of vitamin B12 and to improve the levels of related metabolic blood markers in subjects with a marginal deficiency. The results support the use of a sublingual dosage of 50 μg/day (350 μg/week) of cobalamin, instead of 2000 μg/week (provided as a single dose), to reach a state of nutritional adequacy of vitamin B12 in this target population. Major depressive disorder (MDD) has historically been recognised as a brain disease, however more recently it is being recognised as a whole-body disorder. The immune system and the gut microbiota have been implicated in MDD with particular focus on the gut wall integrity and the resultant immune reaction and its influence on the brain. Gluten may incite an immune reaction in certain individuals and a gluten free diet may be of benefit to symptoms of depression in those who have gluten-related disorders. This randomised prospective control trial of 120 patients with MDD aims to determine the effect of a gluten free diet and probiotic supplementation in symptom management over 12 weeks. As this was a prospective study, no results were achieved. However, the study does indicate that randomised control trials on the effect of diet in MDD are advancing and there may be scientifically proven avenues to support standard therapies.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Current treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) often does not achieve full remission of symptoms. Therefore, new forms of treatment and/or adjunct therapy are needed. Evidence has confirmed the modulation of the gut-brain-microbiota axis as a promising approach in MDD patients. The overall purpose of the SANGUT study-a 12-week, randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled Study Evaluating the Effect of Probiotic Supplementation on the Mental Status, Inflammation, and Intestinal Barrier in Major Depressive Disorder Patients Using Gluten-free or Gluten-containing Diet - is to determine the effect of interventions focused on the gut-brain-microbiota axis in a group of MDD patients. METHODS A total of 120 outpatients will be equally allocated into one of four groups: (1) probiotic supplementation+gluten-free diet group (PRO-GFD), (2) placebo supplementation+ gluten-free diet group (PLA-GFD), (3) probiotic supplementation+ gluten containing diet group (PRO-GD), and (4) placebo supplementation+gluten containing diet group (PLA-GD). PRO groups will receive a mixture of psychobiotics (Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175), and GFD groups will follow a gluten-free diet. The intervention will last 12 weeks. The primary outcome measure is change in wellbeing, whereas the secondary outcome measures include physiological parameters. DISCUSSION Microbiota and its metabolites have the potential to influence CNS function. Probiotics may restore the eubiosis within the gut while a gluten-free diet, via changes in the microbiota profile and modulation of intestinal permeability, may alter the activity of microbiota-gut-brain axis previously found to be associated with the pathophysiology of depression. It is also noteworthy that microbiota being able to digest gluten may play a role in formation of peptides with different immunogenic capacities. Thus, the combination of a gluten-free diet and probiotic supplementation may inhibit the immune-inflammatory cascade in MDD course and improve both psychiatric and gut barrier-associated traits. Adipokines are proteins secreted by adipose tissue which play a role in fat and glucose metabolism. In obese people they promote insulin resistance and inflammation. Two such compounds are apelin-12 and apelin-36. The purpose of this randomised controlled study was to investigate the association of apelin-12 and apelin-36 with aerobic and resistance exercise in middle-aged obese women in Seoul, Korea. 24 women who had not engaged in exercise for the previous six months were randomised to a resistance exercise, aerobic exercise or control group (no exercise). Participants took part in four 50 minute exercise sessions per week for eight weeks. Both exercise groups, but not the control group, had significant reductions in weight, waist circumference, body mass index and body fat percentage. Both exercise groups showed a significant reduction in apelin-12 whilst this marker increased in the control group. There were no significant changes in apelin-36.
Abstract
BACKGROUND The risk for obesity-related diseases increases with the prevalence of obesity. In obesity, adipokines secreted from adipose tissue induce inflammation, causing adverse effects. Recently, adipokines such as apelin, visfatin, and chemerin have been studied. Long-term resistance training improves health in middle-aged women by improving metabolic risk factors, body composition, and muscle strength. However, there is still a lack of evidence on the association of apelin concentration with different exercise types in middle-aged obese women This study aimed to investigate the effects of 8 weeks of aerobic and resistance exercises on apelin-12 and apelin-36 levels and thereby verify the effects of different exercise types in obese, middle-aged women. METHODS Participants were middle-aged women aged 50-61 years, with no experience of systematic exercise in the last 6 months, and met the WHO obesity criteria for the Asia-Pacific region of waist circumference ≥ 80 cm and body fat percentage ≥ 30%. Subjects were selected and allocated to the aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, or no exercise group by block randomization. Body weight, body fat, and body mass index were measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Analysis of variance, the t-test, and Tukey's post-hoc test were performed. RESULTS A total of 24 participants were selected with eight participants in each group. Both aerobic and resistance exercises were effective in altering the physical composition, showing significant decreases in weight, waist circumference, BMI, and body fat. The aerobic and resistance exercise group showed a significant, positive change in apelin-12 levels. CONCLUSIONS In obese individuals, aerobic and resistance exercise were effective in improving obesity and reducing blood apelin-12 concentration, which is closely correlated with indicators of metabolic syndrome. Future research should focus on comparing the response of apelin to exercise in obese subjects treated with only dietary control and the response in the obese subjects of different ages and sex. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with an eightfold increase in the risk of myocardial infarction (MI), and MI patients who have MetS have an increased risk of other cardiovascular events and recurrent MI. Exercise can improve MetS and is also recommended for patients after MI for rehabilitation. The aim of this retrospective study was to examine the effect of supervised high intensity interval training (HIIT) on MetS and body composition in overweight patients with MI. Of 56 patients who took part in a multidisciplinary rehabilitation program, 42 had engaged in HIIT and 14 in moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT), both groups had 36 supervised sessions over 12 weeks. Compared to MICT, the HIIT group demonstrated greater reductions in MetS. Better improvements in the HIIT group were seen in waist circumference, fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, diastolic blood pressure, body fat and lean mass, compared to the MICT group. There were no significant differences between groups in changes in BMI, HDL cholesterol and systolic blood pressure. The authors concluded that their findings support the use of HIIT to improve MetS in MI patients
Abstract
BACKGROUND To examine the effect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on metabolic syndrome (MetS) and body composition in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) patients with myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS We retrospectively screened 174 consecutive patients with MetS enrolled in CR following MI between 2015 and 2018. We included 56 patients who completed 36 CR sessions and pre-post dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Of these patients, 42 engaged in HIIT and 14 in moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT). HIIT included 4-8 intervals of high-intensity (30-60 s at RPE 15-17 [Borg 6-20]) and low-intensity (1-5 min at RPE < 14), and MICT included 20-45 min of exercise at RPE 12-14. MetS and body composition variables were compared between MICT and HIIT groups. RESULTS Compared to MICT, HIIT demonstrated greater reductions in MetS (relative risk = 0.5, 95% CI 0.33-0.75, P < .001), MetS z-score (- 3.6 ± 2.9 vs. - 0.8 ± 3.8, P < .001) and improved MetS components: waist circumference (- 3 ± 5 vs. 1 ± 5 cm, P = .01), fasting blood glucose (- 25.8 ± 34.8 vs. - 3.9 ± 25.8 mg/dl, P < .001), triglycerides (- 67.8 ± 86.7 vs. - 10.4 ± 105.3 mg/dl, P < .001), and diastolic blood pressure (- 7 ± 11 vs. 0 ± 13 mmHg, P = .001). HIIT group demonstrated greater reductions in body fat mass (- 2.1 ± 2.1 vs. 0 ± 2.2 kg, P = .002), with increased body lean mass (0.9 ± 1.9 vs. - 0.9 ± 3.2 kg, P = .01) than the MICT. After matching for exercise energy expenditure, HIIT-induced improvements persisted for MetS z-score (P < .001), MetS components (P < .05), body fat mass (P = .002), body fat (P = .01), and lean mass (P = .03). CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that, compared to MICT, supervised HIIT results in greater improvements in MetS and body composition in MI patients with MetS undergoing CR.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) alongside other related risk factors has been implicated as increasing an individual’s risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. MetS is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation and raised blood lipid levels, which have been shown to improve in individuals when put on a Nordic diet (ND). In this sub-study of the SYSDIET study, which was a 18-24 week randomised controlled multi centre study, the aim was to examine the effect of a ND compared to a control diet (CD) on genes that are involved in the production of inflammatory molecules and lipids. Blood samples of 88 obese participants from the SYSDIET study were analysed for various inflammatory molecule producing genes and lipid molecule producing genes. The results showed that compared to CD, ND increased the presence of the inflammatory gene RELA, but decreased the presence of inflammatory gene TNFRSF1A. No differences were observed in other inflammatory genes and no differences were observed in lipid producing genes. It was concluded that consuming a ND compared to a CD may affect the production of inflammatory genes; however further studies are required to determine if the ND improves the amount of blood lipids because of an altered presence of lipid producing genes. The implication of this for practitioners is that further research of the SYSDIET is needed. In addition, a Nordic diet may improve inflammation in obese individuals because of a reduction in the production of inflammatory genes.
Abstract
A healthy dietary pattern is associated with a lower risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and reduced inflammation. To explore this at the molecular level, we investigated the effect of a Nordic diet (ND) on changes in the gene expression profiles of inflammatory and lipid-related genes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of individuals with MetS. We hypothesized that the intake of an ND compared to a control diet (CD) would alter the expression of inflammatory genes and genes involved in lipid metabolism. The individuals with MetS underwent an 18/24-week randomized intervention to compare a ND with a CD. Eighty-eight participants (66% women) were included in this sub-study of the larger SYSDIET study. Fasting PBMCs were collected before and after the intervention and changes in gene expression levels were measured using TaqMan Array Micro Fluidic Cards. Forty-eight pre-determined inflammatory and lipid related gene transcripts were analyzed. The expression level of the gene tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor superfamily member 1A (TNFRSF1A) was down-regulated (p = 0.004), whereas the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) subunit, RELA proto-oncogene, was up-regulated (p = 0.016) in the ND group compared to the CD group. In conclusion, intake of an ND in individuals with the MetS may affect immune function.
