The fatty acids fulfil many vital roles in the body, such as creating cell membranes, supporting brain functions and being associated with many disease-protective benefits. These fatty acids also influence sleep in children and young adults, but less is known about their effect in older people. Hence, this Japanese study investigated the impact of EPA and DHA on sleep quality in people above the age of ≥ 45. 66 males and females with poor sleep participated in this randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, parallel-grouped study. They either received 860 mg of combined DHA/EPA per day (576 mg DHA/284 mg EPA) or a placebo of corn oil for 12 weeks. The outcome was assessed subjectively via sleep quality and mood questionnaires, as well as objectively with a sleep scanner and blood samples. Blood samples and blood pressure where also monitored as a safety measure. Upon completion of the study there was a subjective improvement, which was backed-up by the results of the sleep scanner. This study confirmed that DHA/EPA improves sleep quality in the middle aged and older population and does so at doses lower than those administered in previous studies. The authors had set the daily minimum intake of DHA/EPA at 860 mg/day for this trial, as previous research showed no effects at lower doses. They also noted that poor responders tended to be people with pre-existing conditions or those who were pregnant. This population may require higher dosages of DHA/EPA than healthy patients. Overall, the intervention was well tolerated. Ensuring adequate DHA and EPA levels and intake could be part of nutritional strategies for sleep support.
Abstract
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-omega-3 fatty acids with various functions-influence sleep in children and young adults. However, only limited studies on their effects on sleep in middle- and old-aged adults have been reported. Therefore, we investigated the effects of DHA and EPA on sleep quality in subjects aged ≥ 45 years. We performed a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, parallel-grouped study, in which we randomly assigned 66 healthy Japanese males and females. Each individual received six 480 mg capsules containing 576 mg DHA and 284 mg EPA per day (DHA/EPA group, n = 33), or corn oil (placebo group, n = 33), for 12 weeks. Before and after the intervention, the Oguri-Shirakawa-Azumi sleep inventory MA version (OSA-MA) and the sleep state test were conducted. In the DHA/EPA group, factor III (frequent dreaming) scores among the OSA-MA scores were significantly improved compared to the placebo group. Additionally, sleep state tests revealed that sleep efficiency improved in the DHA/EPA group. To our knowledge, this study is the first to report that DHA/EPA improves sleep quality in middle- and old-aged individuals, even at doses lower than those administered in previous studies.

Thirty-seven healthy master athletes, aged 40–50, who performed aerobic sports at least four times a week at moderate-high performance were enrolled in the study. Results show that HBOT may significantly enhance physical performance beyond training in healthy master athletes. Moreover, HBOT may directly improve mitochondrial respiration and increase mitochondrial mass. Thus, the main improvements include maximal oxygen consumption, power and the anaerobic threshold. Authors conclude that HBOT can enhance physical performance in healthy adults.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been used to increase endurance performance but has yet to be evaluated in placebo-controlled clinical trials. The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of an intermittent HBOT protocol on maximal physical performance and mitochondrial function in middle-aged master athletes. METHODS A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study on 37 healthy middle-aged (40-50) master athletes was performed between 2018 and 2020. The subjects were exposed to 40 repeated sessions of either HBOT [two absolute atmospheres (ATA), breathing 100% oxygen for 1 h] or SHAM (1.02ATA, breathing air for 1 h). RESULTS Out of 37 athletes, 16 HBOT and 15 SHAM allocated athletes were included in the final analysis. Following HBOT, there was a significant increase in the maximal oxygen consumption (VO2Max) (p = 0.010, effect size(es) = 0.989) and in the oxygen consumption measured at the anaerobic threshold (VO2AT)(es = 0.837) compared to the SHAM group. Following HBOT, there were significant increases in both maximal oxygen phosphorylation capacity (es = 1.085, p = 0.04), maximal uncoupled capacity (es = 0.956, p = 0.02) and mitochondrial mass marker MTG (p = 0.0002) compared to the SHAM sessions. CONCLUSION HBOT enhances physical performance in healthy middle-age master athletes, including VO2max, power and VO2AT. The mechanisms may be related to significant improvements in mitochondrial respiration and increased mitochondrial mass. The ketogenic diet (KD) has been shown in several studies to result in weight loss compared to a conventional high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet (HCLF). It is thought that this sort of diet may inhibit the appetite and increase feelings of being fuller for longer. However, its effects on other biological functions which can lead to weight loss are unclear. This randomised control trial of 11 individuals aimed to determine the effect of the KD on thyroid function, which controls the conversion of calories into energy and therefore has a role in fat storage. The results showed that KD resulted in a higher loss of body mass than the HCLF diet and one of the thyroid hormones (T3) was decreased. However, hormones which stimulate thyroid function remained unchanged. It was concluded that changes in metabolism can occur following the KD, which may contribute to a greater loss of weight compared to a HCLF diet. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand that the ketogenic diet may be more effective at weight loss than a standard HCLF diet. However larger scale trials are warranted.
Abstract
BACKGROUND The ketogenic diet (KD) has been shown to result in body mass loss in people with disease as well as healthy people, yet the effect of the KD on thyroid function and metabolism are unknown. OBJECTIVE We aimed to determine the effects of a KD, compared with an isocaloric high-carbohydrate low-fat (HCLF) diet, on resting metabolic rate and thyroid function in healthy individuals. DESIGN Eleven healthy, normal-weight participants (mean(SD) age: 30(9) years) completed this randomized crossover-controlled study. For a minimum of three weeks on each, participants followed two isocaloric diets: a HCLF diet (55%carbohydrate, 20%fat, 25%protein) and a KD (15%carbohydrate, 60%fat, 25% protein), with a one-week washout period in-between. Importantly, while on the KD, the participants were required to remain in a state of nutritional ketosis for three consecutive weeks. Crossover analyses and linear mixed models were used to assess effect of diet on body mass, thyroid function and resting metabolic rate. RESULTS Both dietary interventions resulted in significant body mass loss (p<0.05) however three weeks of sustained ketosis (KD) resulted in a greater loss of body mass (mean (95%CI): -2.9 (-3.5, -2.4) kg) than did three weeks on the HCLF diet (-0.4 (-1.0, 0.1) kg, p < 0.0001). Compared to pre-diet levels, the change in plasma T3 concentration was significantly different between the two diets (p = 0.003), such that plasma T3 concentration was significantly lower following the KD diet (4.1 (3.8, 4.4) pmol/L, p<0.0001) but not different following the HCLF diet (4.8 (4.5, 5.2) pmol/L, p = 0.171. There was a significant increase in T4 concentration from pre-diet levels following the KD diet (19.3 (17.8, 20.9) pmol/L, p < 0.0001), but not following the HCLF diet (17.3 (15.7, 18.8) pmol.L, p = 0.28). The magnitude of change in plasma T4 concentration was not different between the two diets (p = 0.4). There was no effect of diet on plasma thyroid stimulating hormone concentration (p = 0.27). There was a significantly greater T3:T4 ratio following the HCLF diet (0.41 (0.27, 0.55), p < 0.0001) compared to pre-diet levels but not following the KD diet (0.25 (0.12, 0.39), p = 0.80). CONCLUSIONS Although the diets were isocaloric and physical activity and resting metabolic rate remained constant, the participants lost more mass after the KD than after the HCLF diet. The observed significant changes in triiodothyronine concentration suggest that unknown metabolic changes occur in nutritional ketosis, changes that warrant further investigation. The aim of this randomised control trial of 36 morbidly obese individuals was to compare the effectiveness of Mediterranean diets and low-carbohydrate diets to improve metabolic measures such as blood sugar levels, pre-diabetes, and the body’s ability to use sugar. The results showed that in the short-term both diets were equally effective at improving biochemical dysfunctions that contribute to type 2 diabetes. The low-carbohydrate diet did result in higher weight loss than the Mediterranean diet. Studies on long-term effects are warranted. It was concluded that a low-carbohydrate diet is in the short-term a feasible alternative to the Mediterranean diet for improved weight loss and biological contributors to type 2 diabetes. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand that the Mediterranean diet and low-carbohydrate diet are both effective in the short-term for improvements to contributors to type 2 diabetes, however the low-carbohydrate diet may be superior if weight loss is required.
Abstract
Low-calorie Mediterranean-style or low-carbohydrate dietary regimens are widely used nutritional strategies against obesity and associated metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a balanced Mediterranean diet with a low-carbohydrate diet on weight loss and glucose homeostasis in morbidly obese individuals at high risk to develop diabetes. Insulin secretion, insulin clearance, and different β-cell function components were estimated by modeling plasma glucose, insulin and C-peptide profiles during 75-g oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) performed at baseline and after 4 weeks of each dietary intervention. The average weight loss was 5%, being 58% greater in the low-carbohydrate-group than Mediterranean-group. Fasting plasma glucose and glucose tolerance were not affected by the diets. The two dietary regimens proved similarly effective in improving insulin resistance and fasting hyperinsulinemia, while enhancing endogenous insulin clearance and β-cell glucose sensitivity. In summary, we demonstrated that a low-carbohydrate diet is a successful short-term approach for weight loss in morbidly obese patients and a feasible alternative to the Mediterranean diet for its glucometabolic benefits, including improvements in insulin resistance, insulin clearance and β-cell function. Further studies are needed to compare the long-term efficacy and safety of the two diets.

However, it is unclear as to the exact effects with some previous research reporting that morning exercise is more beneficial to blood sugar levels and others reporting that evening exercise is. This 12-week randomised control trial of 25 overweight/obese men aimed to determine the effect of a 6-day high fat diet followed by 5 days of either morning or evening exercise on several health measures, including blood sugar. The results showed that improvements to heart and lung fitness were similar regardless of the timing of exercise, however improvements to blood sugar and reversal of several indicators of poor heart health were only observed when participants engaged in evening exercise. It was concluded that late afternoon/evening exercise may be of greater benefit to health. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to recommend evening as an optimal time to exercise for people who are overweight/obese and who are wanting to confer the greatest benefits to their health.
Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS We determined whether the time of day of exercise training (morning vs evening) would modulate the effects of consumption of a high-fat diet (HFD) on glycaemic control, whole-body health markers and serum metabolomics. METHODS In this three-armed parallel-group randomised trial undertaken at a university in Melbourne, Australia, overweight/obese men consumed an HFD (65% of energy from fat) for 11 consecutive days. Participants were recruited via social media and community advertisements. Eligibility criteria for participation were male sex, age 30-45 years, BMI 27.0-35.0 kg/m2 and sedentary lifestyle. The main exclusion criteria were known CVD or type 2 diabetes, taking prescription medications, and shift-work. After 5 days, participants were allocated using a computer random generator to either exercise in the morning (06:30 hours), exercise in the evening (18:30 hours) or no exercise for the subsequent 5 days. Participants and researchers were not blinded to group assignment. Changes in serum metabolites, circulating lipids, cardiorespiratory fitness, BP, and glycaemic control (from continuous glucose monitoring) were compared between groups. RESULTS Twenty-five participants were randomised (morning exercise n = 9; evening exercise n = 8; no exercise n = 8) and 24 participants completed the study and were included in analyses (n = 8 per group). Five days of HFD induced marked perturbations in serum metabolites related to lipid and amino acid metabolism. Exercise training had a smaller impact than the HFD on changes in circulating metabolites, and only exercise undertaken in the evening was able to partly reverse some of the HFD-induced changes in metabolomic profiles. Twenty-four-hour glucose concentrations were lower after 5 days of HFD compared with the participants' habitual diet (5.3 ± 0.4 vs 5.6 ± 0.4 mmol/l, p = 0.001). There were no significant changes in 24 h glucose concentrations for either exercise group but lower nocturnal glucose levels were observed in participants who trained in the evening, compared with when they consumed the HFD alone (4.9 ± 0.4 vs 5.3 ± 0.3 mmol/l, p = 0.04). Compared with the no-exercise group, peak oxygen uptake improved after both morning (estimated effect 1.3 ml min-1 kg-1 [95% CI 0.5, 2.0], p = 0.003) and evening exercise (estimated effect 1.4 ml min-1 kg-1 [95% CI 0.6, 2.2], p = 0.001). Fasting blood glucose, insulin, cholesterol, triacylglycerol and LDL-cholesterol concentrations decreased only in participants allocated to evening exercise training. There were no unintended or adverse effects. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION A short-term HFD in overweight/obese men induced substantial alterations in lipid- and amino acid-related serum metabolites. Improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness were similar regardless of the time of day of exercise training. However, improvements in glycaemic control and partial reversal of HFD-induced changes in metabolic profiles were only observed when participants exercise trained in the evening. In recent years, erythritol, a non-calorie sweetener, has gained popularity due to the rise in obesity and Type 2 diabetes worldwide. The purpose of this randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, cross-over trial was to assess the effects of erythritol on the release of gut hormones, speed of gastric emptying, and the release of glucagon, motilin, and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide after erythritol administration. Erythritol in doses of ten, twenty-five, and fifty grams was well tolerated by the participants. The administration of erythritol induced a statistically significant dose-dependent stimulation of gut hormones such as plasma cholecystokinin, active glucagon‐like peptide‐1 and peptide tyrosine. Compared to the placebo, participants had slower gastric emptying with erythritol. Erythritol had no effect on the levels of motilin, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, blood glucose, insulin, glucagon, blood lipids, or uric acid. Erythritol should be evaluated in larger, robust studies to determine whether it improves glycaemic control. However, healthcare professionals can use the results of this study to understand the potential uses of erythritol in the management of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Abstract
AIM: To determine whether a dose-dependent effect in the stimulation of gut hormone release (plasma cholecystokinin [CCK], active glucagon-like peptide-1 [aGLP-1] and peptide tyrosine tyrosine [PYY]) is found for the natural sweetener erythritol. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twelve healthy, lean volunteers received solutions with 10, 25 or 50 g erythritol, or tap water enriched with 13 C-sodium acetate on four study days via a nasogastric tube in this randomized (active treatments), placebo-controlled, double-blind, cross-over trial. Blood samples and breath samples (13 C-sodium acetate method for measurement of gastric emptying [GE]) were taken at regular intervals, and sensations of appetite and gastrointestinal symptoms were rated. RESULTS We found (a) a dose-dependent stimulation of CCK, aGLP-1 and PYY, and slowing of GE, (b) no effect on blood glucose, insulin, motilin, glucagon or glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, (c) no effect on blood lipids and uric acid, and (d) no abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting. CONCLUSIONS Solutions with 10 and 50 g of erythritol stimulated gut hormone release. Emptying of erythritol-containing solutions from the stomach was slower compared with placebo. There was no effect on plasma glucose, insulin, glucagon, blood lipids or uric acid. All doses were well tolerated.

Intermittent exercise, where small bouts of exercise are performed over a short period of time and endurance exercise, has been shown to be particularly effective at improving different aspects of lung function. This randomised control trial aimed to determine the effects of intense endurance training compared too moderate endurance training on lung function. The results showed that lung function was improved following intense endurance training but not moderate endurance training. It was concluded that training intensity may be the most important factor when increasing lung function in athletes. This study could be used by professionals to recommend intense endurance training to improve exercise capacity in athletes.
Abstract
This study compared the effects of varying aerobic training programs on pulmonary diffusing capacity (TLCO), pulmonary diffusing capacity for nitric oxide (TLNO), lung capillary blood volume (Vc) and alveolar-capillary membrane diffusing capacity (DM) of gases at rest and just after maximal exercise in young athletes. Sixteen healthy young runners (16-18 years) were randomly assigned to an intense endurance training program (IET, n = 8) or to a moderate endurance training program (MET, n = 8). The training volume was similar in IET and MET but with different work intensities, and each lasted for 8 weeks. Participants performed a maximal graded cycle bicycle ergometer test to measure maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and maximal aerobic power (MAP) before and after the training programs. Moreover, TLCO, TLNO and Vc were measured during a single breath maneuver. After eight weeks of training, all pulmonary parameters with the exception of alveolar volume (VA) and inspiratory volume (VI) (0.104 < p < 0889; 0.001 < ES < 0.091), measured at rest and at the end of maximal exercise, showed significant group × time interactions (p < 0.05, 0.2 < ES < 4.0). Post hoc analyses revealed significant pre-to-post decreases for maximal heart rates (p < 0.0001, ES = 3.1) and improvements for VO2max (p = 0.006, ES = 2.22) in the IET group. Moreover, post hoc analyses revealed significant pre-to-post improvements in the IET for DM, TLNO, TLCO and Vc (0.001 < p < 0.0022; 2.68 < ES < 6.45). In addition, there were increases in Vc at rest, VO2max, TLNO and DM in the IET but not in the MET participants after eight weeks of training with varying exercise intensities. Our findings suggest that the intensity of training may represent the most important factor in increasing pulmonary vascular function in young athletes.

Dietary modification to improve exercise endurance has become a popular strategy. The reduction of carbohydrates to enhance adaptations due to training has been shown on a cellular level. In low carbohydrate diets, fat is the usual substitute, however long-term adherence to this is often difficult. Using protein instead of fat may be an alternative, but there is little research on this. This study aimed to investigate the impact of a short-term high-protein, reduced carbohydrate diet compared to a high-carbohydrate diet in combination with endurance running on exercise performance and cellular adaptations. The results showed that any cellular adaptations were due to fuel availability, rather than the fuel type and that a high protein diet compromised high intensity exercise performance. It was concluded that a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet in combination with endurance training is of no benefit to endurance running performance. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to recommend that athletes and especially runners who wish to improve endurance do not switch to a high-protein, low carbohydrate diet and that other dietary modifications are investigated.
Abstract
Manipulating dietary macronutrient intake may modulate adaptive responses to exercise, and improve endurance performance. However, there is controversy as to the impact of short-term dietary modification on athletic performance. In a parallel-groups, repeated measures study, 16 trained endurance runners (maximal oxygen uptake (V˙O2max): 64.2 ± 5.6 mL·kg-1·min-1) were randomly assigned to, and provided with, either a high-protein, reduced-carbohydrate (PRO) or a high-carbohydrate (CHO) isocaloric-matched diet. Participants maintained their training load over 21-consecutive days with dietary intake consisting of 7-days habitual intake (T1), 7-days intervention diet (T2) and 7-days return to habitual intake (T3). Following each 7-day dietary period (T1-T3), a micro-muscle biopsy was taken for assessment of gene expression, before participants underwent laboratory assessment of a 10 km treadmill run at 75% V˙O2max, followed by a 95% V˙O2max time to exhaustion (TTE) trial. The PRO diet resulted in a modest change (1.37-fold increase, p = 0.016) in AMPK expression, coupled with a significant increase in fat oxidation (0.29 ± 0.05 to 0.59 ± 0.05 g·min-1, p < 0.0001). However, a significant reduction of 23.3% (p = 0.0003) in TTE post intervention was observed; this reverted back to pre levels following a return to the habitual diet. In the CHO group, whilst no change in sub-maximal fuel utilisation occurred at T2, a significant 6.5% increase in TTE performance (p = 0.05), and a modest, but significant, increase in AMPK (p = 0.042) and PPAR (p = 0.029) mRNA expression compared to T1 were observed; with AMPK (p = 0.011) and PPAR (p = 0.044) remaining significantly elevated at T3. In conclusion, a 7-day isocaloric high protein diet significantly compromised high intensity exercise performance in trained runners with no real benefit on gene markers of training adaptation. A significant increase in fat oxidation during submaximal exercise was observed post PRO intervention, but this returned to pre levels once the habitual diet was re-introduced, suggesting that the response was driven via fuel availability rather than cellular adaptation. A short-term high protein, low carbohydrate diet in combination with endurance training is not preferential for endurance running performance.

Compared to sedentary people, athletes exhibit a much more abundant and diverse composition of gut bacteria. Hence the relationship between gut microbes and energy usage and exercise performance has attracted much attention in recent years. Probiotics and prebiotic-related products have demonstrated the potential to enhance metabolic pathways and influence energy levels, energy consumption and exercise performance. And previous studies demonstrated positive effects on exercise endurance associated with the consumption of kefir, a fermented dairy product containing Lactobacilli species as part of the microbial symbiosis. This study investigated whether kefir can promote changes in the gut microbiota, improve exercise endurance performance, and influences fatigue during and after exercise. The study enrolled sixteen, untrained 20–30-year-old for a double-blind crossover design study, supplementing with SYNKEFIR™ for 28 days whilst observing changes in metabolic markers, body composition, exercise endurance and faecal gut bacteria. In summary, supplementation with SYNKEFIR™ significantly improved exercise performance and reduced the production of lactic acid after exercise. In addition, kefir supplementation seemed to reduce fatigue and accelerated the recovery from fatigue after exercise, with a marked reduction in lactic acid production after exercise. Though kefir supplementation had no significant effect on other post-exercise fatigue biochemical indicators nor did it induce notable changes in gut bacteria composition. As SYNKEFIR™ is a starter culture isolated from traditional kefir it could be expected that other traditional kefir products would have similar effects. Kefir as a food product is suited to a wide range of people, and it could be considered part of a healthy diet plan for untrained individuals wishing to support their exercise performance.
Abstract
Kefir is an acidic, carbonated, and fermented dairy product produced by fermenting milk with kefir grains. The Lactobacillus species constitutes an important part of kefir grains. In a previous animal study, kefir effectively improved exercise performance and had anti-fatigue effects. The purpose of this research was to explore the benefits of applying kefir to improve exercise performance, reduce fatigue, and improve physiological adaptability in humans. The test used a double-blind crossover design and supplementation for 28 days. Sixteen 20-30 year-old subjects were divided into two groups in a balanced order according to each individual's initial maximal oxygen uptake and were assigned to receive a placebo (equal flavor, equal calories, 20 g/day) or SYNKEFIR™ (20 g/day) every morning. After the intervention, there were 28 days of wash-out, during which time the subjects did not receive further interventions. After supplementation with SYNKEFIR™, the exercise time to exhaustion was significantly greater than that before ingestion (p = 0.0001) and higher than that in the Placebo group by 1.29-fold (p = 0.0004). In addition, compared with the Placebo group, the SYNKEFIR™ administration group had significantly lower lactate levels in the exercise and recovery (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was observed in the changes in the gut microbiota. Although no significant changes in body composition were found, SYNKEFIR™ did not cause adverse reactions or harm to the participants' bodies. In summary, 28 days of supplementation with SYNKEFIR™ significantly improved exercise performance, reduced the production of lactic acid after exercise, and accelerated recovery while also not causing any adverse reactions.

Ageing populations have increased in recent years increasing the prevalence of chronic diseases. Chronic diseases can impact the elderly in many ways and see them unable to perform day to day activities. Maintaining fitness may prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease from developing and ensure that these individuals maintain their independence. This randomised control trial of fifty-four middle-aged and older women aimed to compare the effects of high-intensity interval circuit training (HIICT) versus moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on measures of fitness over 18 weeks. The results showed that measures of aerobic fitness were improved with both HIICT and MICT, however HIICT showed slightly greater improvements than MICT. Blood pressure was improved in both exercise groups compared to control. It was concluded that both types of exercise can increase aerobic fitness, although HIICT may have a slightly greater benefit. This study could be used by practitioners to recommend the use of either HIICT or MICT to increase fitness, prevent chronic diseases and ensure that independence is maintained in middle-aged and older female patients.
Abstract
High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has similar or better effects than moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) in increasing peak oxygen consumption (VO2max), however, it has not been studied when HIIT is applied in a circuit (HIICT). The aim of this study was to compare the effects of a HIICT versus MICT on VO2max estimated (VO2max-ES), heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) of middle-aged and older women. A quasi-experimental randomized controlled trial was used. Fifty-four women (67.8 ± 6.2 years) were randomized to either HIICT (n = 18), MICT (n = 18) or non-exercise control group (CG; n = 18) for 18 weeks. Participants in HIICT and MICT trained two days/week (one hour/session). Forty-one participants were assessed (HIICT; n = 17, MICT; n = 12, CG; n = 12). Five adverse events were reported. Cardiorespiratory fitness, HR and BP were measured. The tests were performed before and after the exercise intervention programs. VO2max-ES showed significant training x group interaction, in which HIICT and MICT were statistically superior to CG. Moreover, HIICT and MICT were statistically better than CG in the diastolic blood pressure after exercise (DBPex) interaction. For the systolic blood pressure after exercise (SBPex), HIICT was statistically better than CG. In conclusion, both HIICT and MICT generated adaptations in VO2max-ES and DBPex. Furthermore, only HIICT generated positive effects on the SBPex. Therefore, both training methods can be considered for use in exercise programs involving middle-aged and older women.
