The aim of this study was to clarify the potential effects of antioxidant vitamins supplementation on endometriosis. This study was a systematic review and meta-analysis of eleven studies, comprising a total of 589 patients. Results showed that antioxidant vitamins supplementation can effectively alleviate endometriosis-related pain and reduce inflammatory markers. Authors conclude that antioxidant vitamins supplementation can be considered as an alternative treatment either on its own or in combination with other methods for managing endometriosis-related pain. However, further research would help to provide a clearer understanding of the role of antioxidant vitamins supplementation in women with endometriosis.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to clarify the effect of antioxidant vitamins supplementation on endometriosis-related pain. METHODS A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNK) databases was conducted to identify relevant studies published in English and Chinese up to 16 March 2023. The search terms used were "endometriosis" OR "endometrioma" OR "endometrium" AND "antioxidant" OR "Vitamin C" OR "Vitamin E" OR "Vitamin D" OR "25-OHD" OR "25(OH)D" OR "25-hydroxyvitamin D". Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed pain scores using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Mean differences or odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to evaluate the effect of antioxidant vitamins supplementation on endometriosis. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. The study was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. RESULTS A total of 13 RCTs involving 589 patients were included in this meta-analysis. We identified 11 studies that evaluated the effect of antioxidant vitamins supplementation on endometriosis-related pain. The results indicated that the supplementation of antioxidant vitamins can effectively alleviate endometriosis-related pain. Subgroup analysis showed that the supplementation of vitamin E (with or without vitamin C) had a positive effect on improving clinical pelvic pain in patients with chronic pelvic pain. Conversely, supplementation of vitamin D was associated with a reduction in pelvic pain in endometriosis patients, but the difference was not statistically significant compared to the placebo. Additionally, we observed changes in oxidative stress markers following vitamin supplementation. Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration decreased in patients with endometriosis after antioxidant vitamin supplementation, and the plasma MDA level was inversely correlated with the time and dose of vitamin E and C supplementation. Furthermore, the inflammatory markers in peritoneal fluid, including RANTES, interleukin-6, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, significantly decreased after antioxidant therapy. These findings suggest that antioxidant vitamins may alleviate pain in endometriosis patients by reducing inflammation. CONCLUSIONS The included studies support the potential role of antioxidant vitamins in the management of endometriosis. Supplementation with antioxidant vitamins effectively reduced the severity of dysmenorrhea, improved dyspareunia and pelvic pain, and enhanced quality of life in these patients. Therefore, antioxidant vitamin therapy could be considered as an alternative treatment method, either alone or in combination with other approaches, for endometriosis-related pain. Menopause means both that the ovaries stop producing eggs and that there is a sharp decline in the production of female hormones such as progesterone and oestrogen. The aim of this study was to discuss the benefits of exercise and dietary supplements during menopause. This study was a systematic review of ten articles. Results showed that: - both strength and aerobic training, as well as supplementation with calcium and vitamin D, increase bone mineral density. - combined strength and resistance training provide cardiovascular benefits, increase strength and muscle mass, and reduce the risk of sarcopenia. - physical exercise has a synergistic effect with some supplements, enhancing their effectiveness. Authors concluded that physical exercise can help combat many of the symptoms associated with menopause, providing benefits for a more vital menopause and a more vital old age.
Abstract
UNLABELLED With the aging of the population in developed countries, the number of middle-aged and older women is progressively increasing. During this stage, women suffer from a number of signs and symptoms that could be reduced or treated with physical exercise and dietary supplements. The main objective of this study was to analyse the benefits of exercise and dietary supplements during menopause. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic review of the scientific literature was performed according to the PRISMA 2020 protocol, searching the PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, and WOS databases. Studies that met the inclusion criteria were assessed for methodological quality using the PEDro or AMSTAR-2 scales. RESULTS The searches yielded a total of 104 results, of which 10 were selected, with methodological quality ranging from fair to excellent. Each article examined the combination of a dietary supplement plan versus a placebo; plus an exercise routine versus another routine or a sedentary lifestyle. The results showed the benefits of combining a nutritional supplementation plan with an exercise routine during menopause. CONCLUSIONS The practice of weekly strength and endurance exercises, together with the consumption of certain dietary supplements, may be a good resource for coping with menopause in a healthy way.

Pre-eclampsia is hypertension that becomes present after 20 weeks of gestation combined with proteinuria or another maternal organ dysfunction. It causes problems in 3%–5% of all pregnancies and is estimated to cause at least 42 000 maternal deaths annually. Other than early delivery of the fetus, there is no cure for pre-eclampsia. There is little published information on diet and pre-eclampsia, so the aim of this review is to look at a number of dietary factors and to develop a set of nutritional guidelines to reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia in pregnancy. This dietary review looks at: obesity and gestational weight gain and the discussion of weight management interventions. Fibre, probiotics and prebiotics. Specific dietary patterns such as: diets high in fruit and vegetables, western dietary patterns, New Nordic diet, dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH diet) and the Mediterranean style diet. Evidence for vitamin D, calcium, selenium, folic acid, B12 and multivitamins/minerals is looked at. The authors have summarised their conclusions in a table. However, it is emphasised that dietary recommendations should be considered in combination with other preventive actions such as a screening policy or pharmacological agents that may be appropriate for high-risk groups.
Abstract
Pre-eclampsia affects 3%-5% of pregnant women worldwide and is associated with a range of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes, including maternal and/or fetal death. It particularly affects those with chronic hypertension, pregestational diabetes mellitus or a family history of pre-eclampsia. Other than early delivery of the fetus, there is no cure for pre-eclampsia. Since diet or dietary supplements may affect the risk, we have carried out an up-to-date, narrative literature review to assess the relationship between nutrition and pre-eclampsia. Several nutrients and dietary factors previously believed to be implicated in the risk of pre-eclampsia have now been shown to have no effect on risk; these include vitamins C and E, magnesium, salt, ω-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (fish oils) and zinc. Body mass index is proportionally correlated with pre-eclampsia risk, therefore women should aim for a healthy pre-pregnancy body weight and avoid excessive gestational and interpregnancy weight gain. The association between the risk and progression of the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia may explain the apparent benefit of dietary modifications resulting from increased consumption of fruits and vegetables (≥400 g/day), plant-based foods and vegetable oils and a limited intake of foods high in fat, sugar and salt. Consuming a high-fibre diet (25-30 g/day) may attenuate dyslipidaemia and reduce blood pressure and inflammation. Other key nutrients that may mitigate the risk include increased calcium intake, a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement and an adequate vitamin D status. For those with a low selenium intake (such as those living in Europe), fish/seafood intake could be increased to improve selenium intake or selenium could be supplemented in the recommended multivitamin/mineral supplement. Milk-based probiotics have also been found to be beneficial in pregnant women at risk. Our recommendations are summarised in a table of guidance for women at particular risk of developing pre-eclampsia.

Thyroid hormones play a vital role in regulating metabolism. Adequate thyroid hormone levels are also critical during pregnancy for optimal fetal growth and development. The foetus is dependent on maternal thyroid hormones until its own thyroid gland matured in the second half of pregnancy. Furthermore, pregnancy impacts thyroid function leading to an increased demand for thyroid hormones. Thyroid disease has been associated with Vitamin D deficiency. During pregnancy, both thyroid disorders and Vitamin D deficiency can have adverse effects on pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes, hence a potential link between Vitamin D status and thyroid function has been postulated. To fill the gaps in previous research, this retrospective cohort study aimed to explore the associations between Vitamin D status and thyroid function throughout the pregnancy, in each trimester. The analysis of hospital data collected in Beijing demonstrated an association between Vitamin D levels and thyroid function throughout pregnancy. Such interlink appeared to be dynamic and changed depending on the stage of pregnancy. The author's findings affirmed that maintenance of adequate Vitamin D levels supports normal thyroid function which is an important nutritional strategy for a healthy pregnancy.
Abstract
Optimal Vitamin D (VitD) status and thyroid function are essential for pregnant women. This study aimed to explore associations between dynamic VitD status and thyroid function parameters in each trimester and throughout the pregnancy period. Information on all 8828 eligible participants was extracted from the Peking University Retrospective Birth Cohort in Tongzhou. Dynamic VitD status was represented as a combination of deficiency/sufficiency in the first and second trimesters. Thyroid function was assessed in three trimesters. The associations between VitD and thyroid function were assessed by multiple linear regression and generalized estimating equation models in each trimester and throughout the pregnancy period, respectively. The results indicated that both free thyroxine (fT4; β = 0.004; 95%CI: 0.003, 0.006; p < 0.001) and free triiodothyronine (fT3; β = 0.009; 95%CI: 0.004, 0.015; p = 0.001) had positive associations with VitD status in the first trimester. A VitD status that was sufficient in the first trimester and deficient in the second trimester had a lower TSH (β = -0.370; 95%CI: -0.710, -0.031; p = 0.033) compared with the group with sufficient VitD for both first and second trimesters. In conclusion, the associations between VitD and thyroid parameters existed throughout the pregnancy. Maintaining an adequate concentration of VitD is critical to support optimal thyroid function during pregnancy.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), also called chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, is the most prevalent organ-specific autoimmune disorder as well as the most common cause of thyroid hypofunction. The main purpose of HT treatment is the control of hypothyroidism, including oral administration of a synthetic hormone to achieve normal circulating thyrotropin levels. The aim of this study was to review the association between vitamin D treatment in patients with HT by assessing patients’ serum circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D - 25(OH)D - level to evaluate whether a change occurs in the course of disease. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of seven cohorts of patients from six studies (3 prospective cohort studies and 3 randomised controlled trials). Results show that vitamin D might significantly increase the serum 25(OH)D levels and produce changes in thyroid peroxidase antibodies titres. However, there wasn't a significant association between serum vitamin D supplementation and the levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroglobulin antibodies, free triiodothyronine and free thyroxine. Authors conclude that their findings suggest that vitamin D is not associated with the function of the thyroid in patients with HT. Thus, further well-designed randomised controlled trials with sufficient sample sizes investigating the effect of vitamin D on thyroid function are still warranted.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION Recent evidence suggested that vitamin D deficiency was associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) pathogenesis and thyroid hypofunction. This study aimed to investigate whether vitamin D supplementation would be effective in the prevention and progression of hypothyroidism in patients with HT. METHODS PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane library were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and prospective cohort studies published from inception to August 2021. RESULTS A total of 7 cohorts of patients from six clinical trials with 258 patients with HT were included. Significant difference was found (WMD = 19.00, 95% CI: 12.43, 25.58, p < 0.001; I2 = 90.0%, pheterogeneity < 0.001) between the vitamin D group and control group in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level. And the combined results indicated vitamin D supplementation significantly reduced the level of thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO-Ab) compared to the control group (WMD = -158.18, 95% CI: -301.92, -14.45, p = 0.031; I2 = 68.8%, pheterogeneity = 0.007). Whereas no significant differences were found on the levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4) compared to the control group (p > 0.05). WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated that vitamin D treatment might significantly increase the serum 25(OH)D levels and produce changes in TPO-Ab titres. No significant association was found between serum vitamin D treatment and the levels of TG-Ab, TSH, FT3 and FT4, suggesting that vitamin D is not associated with the function of the thyroid in patients with HT.

Early reports have shown that individuals with diabetes who contract Covid-19 have higher hospital admissions and mortality rates, classing them as a vulnerable group. This review paper aimed to explain why this group of people are vulnerable and what measures could be recommended. The paper outlined that individuals with diabetes have a compromised immune system due to uncontrolled blood sugar levels. In addition to this, individuals with diabetes and Covid-19 may have a higher risk of organ damage due to the effects of the body's immune response combined with the disordered biological processes associated with their pre-existing condition. Conversely, it was discussed that Covid-19 could exacerbate diabetes progression if the Covid-19 virus entered the cells of the pancreas, causing a blood sugar imbalance. As a result, the importance of optimal blood sugar control was outlined. Several medications were addressed and their benefits/disadvantages discussed. Amongst those reviewed were medications such as GLP-1 agonists, which may help with controlling blood sugar levels and may prevent Covid-19 entering the body's own cells, and metformin, which was initially developed as an anti-influenza drug. Finally the paper discussed diabetes specific precautions to avoid contracting Covid-19. Vitamin D supplementation, regular blood sugar checks, lifestyle measures such as exercise and dietary requirements and allowing individuals with diabetes to have large supplies of their medications to avoid leaving the house were discussed. It was concluded that during the Covid-19 pandemic, individuals with diabetes require particular care in order to avoid additional burden on healthcare systems. For those individuals with diabetes who haven’t contracted Covid-19, this paper could be used to recommend any extra precautions to take to avoid contracting this virus.
Abstract
BACKGROUND The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has taken the world by storm. Alongside COVID-19, diabetes is a long-standing global epidemic. The diabetes population has been reported to suffer adverse outcomes if infected by COVID-19. The aim was to summarise information and resources available on diabetes and COVID-19, highlighting special measures that individuals with diabetes need to follow. METHODS A search using keywords "COVID-19" and "Diabetes" was performed using different sources, including PubMed and World Health Organization. RESULTS COVID-19 may enhance complications in individuals with diabetes through an imbalance in angiotension-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) activation pathways leading to an inflammatory response. ACE2 imbalance in the pancreas causes acute β-cell dysfunction and a resultant hyperglycemic state. These individuals may be prone to worsened COVID-19 complications including vasculopathy, coagulopathy as well as psychological stress. Apart from general preventive measures, remaining hydrated, monitoring blood glucose regularly and monitoring ketone bodies in urine if on insulin is essential. All this while concurrently maintaining physical activity and a healthy diet. Different supporting entities are being set up to help this population. CONCLUSION COVID-19 is a top priority. It is important to remember that a substantial proportion of the world's population is affected by other co-morbidities such as diabetes. These require special attention during this pandemic to avoid adding on to the burden of countries' healthcare systems.

This very large review paper looked at over 100 studies and outlined the interrelationship between Covid-19 infection and several endocrine diseases. Diabetes, obesity, pituitary-hypothalamic function, thyroid function, Cushing's syndrome and adrenal function were all reviewed. No aim was stated. Data on individuals with obesity and diabetes indicated an increased risk for severe Covid-19 infection, hospitalisation and mortality. Data surrounding pituitary-hypothalamic function, thyroid function, Cushing's syndrome and adrenal function was less abundant, however neurological issues in Covid-19 patients suggested an involvement of the pituitary and hypothalamus. In lieu of sufficient data the author commented on the possible similarities between severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus with the Covid-19 virus. A number of management strategies were discussed such as the use of vitamin D, oxytocin and melatonin, however the authors commented on the lack of data regarding oxytocin and melatonin in Covid-19 patients, but mechanistic data suggested they might be of use. No overall conclusions were drawn on the findings. Clinicians could use this paper to understand how patients with pre-existing endocrine and metabolic conditions may be at a higher risk of more severe Covid-19 and if contracted could exacerbate their pre-existing condition. These patients could require constant monitoring and additional measures to avoid contracting Covid-19. Supplements such as vitamin D, oxytocin or melatonin could be therapeutic, however more data needs to be reviewed.
Abstract
COVID-19 infection has tremendously impacted our daily clinical practice as well as our social living organization. Virtually all organs and biological systems suffer from this new coronavirus infection, either because the virus targets directly specific tissues or because of indirect effects. Endocrine diseases are not an exception and some of endocrine organs are at risk of direct or indirect lesion by COVID-19. Although there is still no evidence of higher predisposition to contract the infection in patients with diabetes and/or obesity, the coexistence of these conditions contributes to a worse prognosis because both conditions confer an impaired immunologic system. Cytokines storm can be amplified by these two latter conditions thereby leading to multisystemic failure and death. Glycaemic control has been demonstrated to be crucial to avoiding long hospital stays, ICU requirement and also prevention of excessive mortality. Endocrine treatment modifications as a consequence of COVID-19 infection are required in a proactive manner, in order to avoid decompensation and eventual hospital admission. This is the case of diabetes and adrenal insufficiency in which prompt increase of insulin dosage and substitutive adrenal steroids through adoption of the sick day's rules should be warranted, as well as easy contact with the health care provider through telematic different modalities. New possible endocrinological targets of COVID-19 have been recently described and warrant a full study in the next future.

Current quarantine measures aim to reduce transmission of Covid-19 to prevent deaths and ensure healthcare systems do not become overwhelmed. However the long term effects of quarantine can have negative consequences on an individual’s health. Stress, increased heart related diseases and affected mental health have all been implicated as outcomes of extended quarantine. This review paper aimed to assess the impact of quarantine on lifestyle factors such as nutrition, physical activity and the role of technology in a Covid-19 adapting world. The paper outlines that quarantine may increase chronic stress, which activates certain nervous and hormonal systems, resulting in adverse affects on the heart. However physical data on this in relation to quarantine is lacking. Quarantine can also lead to changes in lifestyle habits, such as an increased intake of sugar-rich food, alcohol and a decrease in physical activity, which may be maintained after quarantine has lifted in response to economic crisis. Stress related eating, the availability of fresh foods and restricted shop opening hours were implicated as reasons why many people switch to unhealthy eating habits. Prevention of Covid-19 through the use of vitamin D was discussed, due to its ability to protect against infection and inflammation, especially in those who are deficient. Preventative measures to quarantine related stress and reducing the risk of heart related diseases were also highlighted through staying physically active and healthy eating strategies. The paper concluded that after the Covid-19 pandemic it is likely that there will be an increase in heart related diseases. Clinicians could use this paper to encourage healthy eating and exercise in patients who have heart related diseases or to decrease the risk of heart related diseases in patients who are suffering from stress as a direct result of quarantine.
Abstract
AIMS: CoV-19/SARS-CoV-2 is a highly pathogenic virus that is causing a global pandemic with a high number of deaths and infected people. To contain the diffusion of infection, several governments have enforced restrictions on outdoor activities or even collective quarantine on the population. The present commentary briefly analyzes the effects of quarantine on lifestyle, including nutrition and physical activity and the impact of new technologies in dealing with this situation. DATA SYNTHESIS Quarantine is associated with stress and depression leading to unhealthy diet and reduced physical activity. A diet poor in fruit and vegetables is frequent during isolation, with a consequent low intake of antioxidants and vitamins. However, vitamins have recently been identified as a principal weapon in the fight against the Cov-19 virus. Some reports suggest that Vitamin D could exert a protective effect on such infection. During quarantine, strategies to further increase home-based physical activity and to encourage adherence to a healthy diet should be implemented. The WHO has just released guidance for people in self-quarantine, those without any symptoms or diagnosis of acute respiratory illness, which provides practical advice on how to stay active and reduce sedentary behavior while at home. CONCLUSION Quarantine carries some long-term effects on cardiovascular disease, mainly related to unhealthy lifestyle and anxiety. Following quarantine, a global action supporting healthy diet and physical activity is mandatory to encourage people to return to a good lifestyle routine.

The authors goal is to raise Vitamin D concentrations to 100-150 nmol/l. Abstract
The world is in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic. Public health measures that can reduce the risk of infection and death in addition to quarantines are desperately needed. This article reviews the roles of vitamin D in reducing the risk of respiratory tract infections, knowledge about the epidemiology of influenza and COVID-19, and how vitamin D supplementation might be a useful measure to reduce risk. Through several mechanisms, vitamin D can reduce risk of infections. Those mechanisms include inducing cathelicidins and defensins that can lower viral replication rates and reducing concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines that produce the inflammation that injures the lining of the lungs, leading to pneumonia, as well as increasing concentrations of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Several observational studies and clinical trials reported that vitamin D supplementation reduced the risk of influenza, whereas others did not. Evidence supporting the role of vitamin D in reducing risk of COVID-19 includes that the outbreak occurred in winter, a time when 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations are lowest; that the number of cases in the Southern Hemisphere near the end of summer are low; that vitamin D deficiency has been found to contribute to acute respiratory distress syndrome; and that case-fatality rates increase with age and with chronic disease comorbidity, both of which are associated with lower 25(OH)D concentration. To reduce the risk of infection, it is recommended that people at risk of influenza and/or COVID-19 consider taking 10,000 IU/d of vitamin D3 for a few weeks to rapidly raise 25(OH)D concentrations, followed by 5000 IU/d. The goal should be to raise 25(OH)D concentrations above 40-60 ng/mL (100-150 nmol/L). For treatment of people who become infected with COVID-19, higher vitamin D3 doses might be useful. Randomized controlled trials and large population studies should be conducted to evaluate these recommendations.

Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, and low vitamin D status is associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Ethnic minority populations with darker skin are considered as a high-risk group for vitamin D deficiency, owing mainly to having less ability to synthesise vitamin D from sunlight due to the skin pigment melanin and/or reduced skin exposure due to clothing required by religious or cultural traditions. The aim of this literature review was to evaluate vitamin D intake and status of ethnic minority populations with darker skin. The authors examined previous observational studies and randomised controlled trials. Ethnic minority populations generally have a lower vitamin D status than white populations. Compared with Caucasians, there is evidence that Asians require approximately three times longer periods of sunlight exposure, and Africans six times the same exposure, to achieve the same blood levels of vitamin D. The main food sources for dietary vitamin D intake were different for ethnic minority populations and white populations. There is limited evidence on the impact of vitamin D supplementation on different ethnic groups. The authors concluded that food fortification could be explored to increase dietary vitamin D intake in ethnic minority populations who generally have lower levels of vitamin D.
Abstract
In recent years, vitamin D deficiency has attracted attention worldwide. Especially many ethnic minority populations are considered at high-risk of vitamin D deficiency, owing to a lesser ability to synthesis vitamin D from sunlight (ultraviolet B), due to the skin pigment melanin and/or reduced skin exposure due to coverage required by religious and cultural restrictions. Therefore, vitamin D intake from dietary sources has become increasingly important for many ethnic minority populations to achieve adequate vitamin D status compared with the majority of the population. The aim of the study was critically evaluate the vitamin D intake and vitamin D status of the ethnic minority populations with darker skin, and also vitamin D absorption from supplements and ultraviolet B. Pubmed, Embaase and Scopus were searched for articles published up to October 2018. The available evidence showed ethnic minority populations generally have a lower vitamin D status than the majority populations. The main contributory food sources for dietary vitamin D intake were different for ethnic minority populations and majority populations, due to vary dietary patterns. Future strategies to increase dietary vitamin D intake by food fortification or biofortification needs to be explored, not only for the majority population but more specifically for ethnic minority populations who are generally of lower vitamin D status.
