Depression can considerably impair daily function. However, although medications and psychological therapy can be effective in treating depression, non‐compliance with and/or side effects of antidepressants are common. Thus, identifying alternative or adjunctive therapies to prevent or treat depression may help to overcome some limitations of current management strategies. The aim of this study was to examine whether supplementing older Australians with monthly doses of 60,000 IU of vitamin D3 for 5 years would reduce depressive symptoms or incidence of antidepressant use, as a surrogate for a formal diagnosis of depression. This study used data from the D‐Health Trial, a large population‐based randomised controlled trial. Authors randomly selected potential participants aged between 60 and 79 years from the Australian Commonwealth Electoral Roll. The participants who accepted the invitation were randomly allocated to either 60,000 IU of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) or placebo in a 1:1 ratio. Results show that there wasn’t an overall benefit of monthly supplementation with 60,000 IU of vitamin D for up to 5 years on measures of depression. However, pre‐specified subgroup analyses suggested a potential beneficial effect of vitamin D supplementation in people taking antidepressants at baseline or with lower predicted baseline vitamin D3 concentration. However there was an unfavourable effect in participants with a body mass index <25 kg/m2 or those with higher predicted baseline vitamin D3 concentration. Authors conclude that routine supplementation with vitamin D in populations with a low prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is unlikely to be of benefit for depression and may cause harm in people with low body mass index or normal vitamin D status.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate whether vitamin D supplementation reduces depressive symptoms and incidence of antidepressant use. METHODS We used data from the D-Health Trial (N = 21,315), a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of monthly vitamin D3 for the prevention of all-cause mortality. Participants were Australians aged 60-84 years. Participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) at 1, 2 and 5 years after randomization to measure depressive symptoms; national prescribing records were used to capture antidepressant use. We used mixed models and survival models. RESULTS Analyses of PHQ-9 scores included 20,487 participants (mean age 69·3 years, 46% women); the mean difference (MD) in PHQ-9 score (vitamin D vs. placebo) was 0·02 (95% CI -0·06, 0·11). There was negligible difference in the prevalence of clinically relevant depression (PHQ-9 score ≥10) (odds ratio 0·99; 95% CI 0·90, 1·08). We included 16,670 participants in the analyses of incident antidepressant use (mean age 69·4 years, 43% women). Incidence of antidepressant use was similar between the groups (hazard ratio [HR] 1·04; 95% CI 0·96, 1·12). In subgroup analyses, vitamin D improved PHQ-9 scores in those taking antidepressants at baseline (MD -0·25; 95% CI -0·49, -0·01; p-interaction = 0·02). It decreased risk of antidepressant use in participants with predicted 25(OH)D concentration <50 nmol/L (HR 0·88; 95% CI 0·75, 1·02; p-interaction = 0·01) and increased risk in those with predicted 25(OH)D ≥ 50 nmol/L (HR 1·10; 95% CI 1·01, 1·20). CONCLUSION Monthly supplementation with high-dose vitamin D3 was not of benefit for measures of depression overall, but there was some evidence of benefit in subgroup analyses. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. Several studies have found bidirectional associations between ADHD and diabetes mellitus (DM). The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of ADHD in DM patients as well as the prevalence of DM in ADHD patients compared with those without ADHD, and to explore the impacts of ADHD on glycaemic control in patients with DM. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 17 articles; five were cohort studies, three were case-control studies, and nine were cross-sectional studies. Results through the pooled analyses suggest an important comorbid relationship between diabetes and ADHD. Overall, there was an increase in T2DM of 166% and 51% in children and adults with ADHD, respectively, relative to those without ADHD. Furthermore, there was an overall 37% increase in T1DM in children with ADHD. Authors conclude that further studies are needed to better understand the relationship between ADHD and DM. Additionally, it is important to take into consideration the type of DM if this association is different in various age groups (children and adults).
Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to investigate the prevalence estimate of diabetes mellitus (DM) among people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as well as the prevalence of ADHD among those with DM. In addition, the impact of ADHD on glycemic control in patients with DM was also assessed using a systematic review and meta-analysis of currently available published data. MATERIALS AND METHODS The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and PsycInfo databases were searched for potential studies. Two reviewers independently selected studies according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. All pooled analyses were conducted using the random-effects models on Review Manager 5.3. RESULTS Seventeen observational studies were included. The pooled results showed an increase in the prevalence of DM among patients with ADHD versus those without ADHD [type 1 DM OR 1.37 (95% CI: 1.17-1.61); type 2 DM OR 2.05 (95% CI: 1.37-3.07)]. There was an overall 35% increase in the prevalence of ADHD among patients with type 1 DM [OR: 1.35 (95% CI: 1.08-1.73)]. Children with type 1 DM and ADHD had higher levels of hemoglobin A1c [standardized mean of differences: 0.67 (95% CI: 0.48-0.86)], and prevalence of hypoglycemic and ketoacidosis index compared with those without ADHD. CONCLUSION Our study revealed the bidirectional associations between ADHD and DM. Patients with ADHD and type 1 DM comorbidities were more likely to have poorer diabetes control. More studies are needed to confirm this association and elucidate the underlying mechanism.

Introduction
OSA represents one of the most common and serious sleep-related breathing disorders, with a high worldwide prevalence of almost 1 billion people. OSA has numerous well-established cardiometabolic consequences.
The authors highlight that weight loss is essential for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) management. However, the optimal degree of weight loss for improving OSA severity or eliminating sleep-disordered breathing has not been extensively studied. The aim of this study was to explore the dose-response relationship between the degree of weight loss and improvements in OSA severity.
Methods
This is a secondary analysis of the Mediterranean diet/lifestyle Intervention for the Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (MIMOSA) study. This study was designed as a single-center, single-blind, parallel, randomised, controlled clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a weight-loss Mediterranean dietary/lifestyle intervention on managing OSA.
This 6-month long clinical trial included 180 adult, overweight/obese moderate-to-severe OSA patients (45 patients per study group plus a 29% dropout rate). All patients were prescribed the standard of care continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy and were randomised to 3 arms: standard care; Mediterranean diet; Mediterranean lifestyle
Based on percent change in weight at 6 months, participants were categorised into a weight-stable/gain (WS/GG) group or one of 3 weight-loss groups (WLG): < 5%WLG; 5%–10%WLG; ≥ 10%WLG. Polysomnographic data and OSA symptoms were also evaluated preintervention and postintervention.
Results
Results confirm a dose-response relationship between the degree of weight loss achieved through a dietary/lifestyle intervention and improvements in OSA severity.
- Respiratory events and oximetry indices improved only in patients who lost weight. Improvements were proportional to the degree of weight loss.
- Median percent change in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was −11.7%, − 37.9%, and − 49.3% in the < 5%WLG, 5%–10%WLG, and ≥ 10%WLG, respectively (P < .001).
- Compared to the WS/GG, the age-, sex-, baseline-, and CPAP use–adjusted relative risk (95% confidence interval) of severe OSA (AHI ≥ 30 events/h) was 0.45 (0.23–0.87) in the 5%–10%WLG and 0.32 (0.17–0.64) in the ≥ 10%WLG; the risk was also lower in the ≥ 10%WLG vs the < 5%WLG (0.42 [0.22–0.82]).

Conclusions
The authors conclude that even a < 5% weight loss was sufficient for improvements in respiratory events and oximetry indices, but the prevalence of severe OSA reduced only after a ≥ 5% weight loss, and patients achieving a ≥ 10% weight loss exhibited the greatest benefits compared to weight-stable/gain patients.

These findings might be useful for Nutritional Therapists and Clinical Practitioners:
- Clinicians should aim for a ≥ 5% weight loss, and ideally a ≥ 10% weight loss, to achieve clinically meaningful reductions in OSA severity.
- Improvements after weight loss were significant even though a healthy body weight was not achieved.
Considerations for future research:
- The study sample consisted of predominantly male, overweight, otherwise healthy patients with moderate-to-severe OSA. Therefore, findings cannot be generalised to the whole OSA population and further research is required with broader, diverse, study samples.
- 6 months is a short duration period, therefore longer trials are required.
- Self-reported CPAP use by participants is a limitation of this study. Further robust analysis methods should be considered for future trials.
- Participants were advised to abstain from CPAP therapy for 2 days prior to the follow-up PSG but this was not evaluated or confirmed in this study and should be in future research.

Exercise has been shown to improve fitness, wellbeing, and health. However, strenuous exercise may be detrimental physiologically, as well as affecting psychological health. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of daily probiotic supplementation on anxiety, stress, mood and fitness levels among competitive badminton players. This study was a randomised, placebo-controlled study. Recruited participants (n=30) were randomly divided into the probiotic group and the control group. The participants were given treatments for six weeks without altering the training schedule of the athletes. Results showed that stress and anxiety in badminton players could be alleviated with the daily consumption of probiotics for six weeks. Additionally, probiotics supplementation increased aerobic capacity. Authors conclude that probiotic supplements could be beneficial for athletes to enhance their mental state and physical performance. Thus, probiotic supplementation that may influence the regulation of pathways (neuro-endocrine) and mechanism of action in response to physical and psychological stressors encountered by badminton players should further studied.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Reports of probiotic consumption on athletes' performance are debatable due to their equivocal results. There is a need for more evidence on the effects of probiotic intake on psychological state and fitness level. Thus, this study determined the effects of daily probiotic consumption on competitive anxiety, perceived stress and mood among university badminton players, besides their fitness like aerobic capacity, strength, speed, leg power and agility. METHODS Thirty university badminton players aged from 19 to 22 years old were randomly divided equally into two groups, where the probiotic group (PG; n = 15) received a drink that contained Lactobacillus casei Shirota (3 × 1010 CFU) and placebo group (CG; n = 15) a placebo drink for six weeks. Anxiety, stress and mood levels were determined using the CSAI-2R, PSS and BRUMS questionnaires, respectively. Fitness levels were measured using by subjecting the players to 20-m shuttle runs (aerobic capacity), handgrips (muscular strength), vertical jumps (leg power), 40-m dash (speed) and T-test (agility). The Student's t-test (p < 0.05) was used to determine the differences between PG and CG players. RESULTS After six weeks, the anxiety and stress levels of PG players significantly decreased by 16% (p < 0.001) and 20% (p < 0.001), respectively, but there were no significant changes detected in CG players. Supplementation of probiotics also improved aerobic capacity in PG players by 5.9% (p < 0.001) but did not influence the speed, strength, leg power and agility. CONCLUSIONS Probiotics supplementation showed improved aerobic capacity and relieve anxiety and stress. However, further studies need to be carried out to determine the mechanisms through which probiotic intake produces these effects.

Dementia is a chronic condition characterised as a decline in cognitive functioning that leads to dependence in the performance of daily activities, including nutritional sufficiency. As the dis-ease progresses, eating and drinking may become more difficult. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of oral nutrition supplements (ONS) on nutritional intake and clinical outcomes in older persons with dementia. This study is a systemic review which included ten studies of which 9 where experimental studies (n=6 RCTs; n=3 non RCTs) based on patients with dementia who were undernourished. Results indicate that ONS improved daily intake of energy and protein, compliance was high, and more persons met the recommended nutrition intake. In fact, intervention with ONS improved nutritional status; however, no effects on cognitive or functional outcomes were reported. Authors conclude that there is the need for a more comprehensive intervention plan for people with cognitive impairments that addresses the individual nutritional challenges in order to systematically meet nutritional needs.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE Persons with dementia are at risk of malnutrition, evidenced by low dietary intake, which has consequences for nutritional status, activity of daily living and disease progression. The effects of oral nutrition supplements (ONS) on nutritional intake, nutritional status, and cognitive and physical outcomes in older persons with dementia were evaluated. METHODS PubMed, Medline, Embase, CINAHL and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched in December 2017, and this was repeated in May 2019. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Analysis (PRISMA) checklist was used. Papers were considered if they presented experimental clinical trials using oral nutritional supplements to persons diagnosed with dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment, and conducted in hospitals, nursing homes or homes. RESULTS We included ten articles reporting nine clinical trials. A total of 407 persons with dementia were included, of whom 228 used ONS for 7 to 180 days. Nutritional intake improved by 201 to 600 kcal/day. Energy intake from ordinary foods was not affected, thus ONS improved the persons daily intake of energy and protein. Body weight, muscle mass, and nutritional biomarkers in blood improved in the intervention groups compared with the control groups. No effects on cognition or physical outcomes were observed. CONCLUSION ONS increases the intake of energy and protein and improves nutritional status in persons with dementia; however, RCTs with longer intervention periods are needed to investigate the impact on cognitive and functional outcomes.

The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in national lockdowns, which resulted in isolation within people’s homes. This cross-sectional survey examined changes in eating patterns and behaviour during lockdown. Of the 620 participants included in the study, eating higher energy density foods was more common in females with a higher BMI and higher health anxiety. Although there was a change in emotional eating behaviours across the sample as a whole, it was not in the expected direction, with many participants reporting a decrease in emotional eating after the implementation of lockdown. There were also increases in fruit and vegetable consumption and home prepared foods. Many of these behavioural responses were influenced by pre-lockdown tendencies. Therefore, it is important to consider these when understanding coping strategies during lockdown, and how to support clients as we come out of lockdown.

Summary Review:
The role of eating behaviours and psychological responses during lockdown has become an area of interest, particularly with the uncertainty of going into future lockdowns. With Covid-19, and individual’s responses to it, being a relatively new research topic, there is not yet enough evidence for longitudinal outcomes of the findings in these studies. It is also difficult to ascertain the influence of confounding variables prior to the national lockdown, such as food insecurity, not accounted for due to the unpredictable start to the pandemic. There has also been disproportionate risks between certain demographics and their Covid-19 risk, therefore further research on the impact of this on health anxiety and subsequent eating behaviours is required. This highlights a wider need for continued research on the topic.
Clinical practice applications:
Those who had problematic eating behaviours and higher BMI pre lockdown will need to be supported with healthier coping practices if subsequent lockdowns occur, to prevent health related anxiety and consumption of high energy density foods. Furthermore, those who were shielding in their homes were also more likely to show an increase in emotional eating post lockdown. Therefore, clients who spent a large amount of lockdown shielding will need additional support, to develop coping strategies to prevent risk of emotional eating and health anxiety.
Considerations for future research:
Both retrospective and longitudinal studies monitoring the impact of eating behaviours and health anxiety pre and post lockdown are needed. This will help further the evidence base of the potential role of Covid-19 related health anxiety on eating patterns, coping strategies and dietary choices.
Abstract
The global coronavirus pandemic (Covid 19) resulted in national lockdowns where individuals were asked to isolate in their homes to stop the spread of the disease. Using a cross-sectional survey, the current paper aimed to examine self-reported changes in eating patterns and behaviour during the lockdown in the UK, and associations with BMI, demographic variables, eating styles, health anxiety, food insecurity and coping strategies. Participants (N = 620) were recruited online through social media advertising. The results showed that there were self-reported changes to food consumption during the lockdown across the sample. Increases in consumption of HED (high energy density) snack foods during the lockdown was associated with sex, pre-lockdown eating behaviour (emotional eating and uncontrolled eating), and Covid-specific health anxiety. Increases in positive eating practices such as eating more home prepared foods, and fruits and vegetables, were associated with adaptive coping strategies. Higher emotional eating (EE) during the lockdown was associated with a higher BMI, higher pre-lockdown EE and maladaptive coping strategies. Maladaptive coping strategies moderated the relationship between BMI and EE during the lockdown. In particular a higher BMI was associated with higher EE during the lockdown if an individual also had higher maladaptive coping strategies. These findings suggest that changes to eating behaviour may be part of a wider style of maladaptive or adaptive coping, particularly in those with a history of EE or uncontrolled eating. Preparing individuals to adopt more adaptive coping strategies during lockdown situations may be crucial to improving health during subsequent the lockdown events.

However, the psychosocial repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic have not yet been fully considered. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional attitudes and habits that changed during the COVID-19 pandemic due to fear and anxiety status. The study included 1012 individuals (n=827 female, n=185 male) living in Turkey with an age range between 18 and 65 years. Results indicate: - that 26·7 % of the participants used nutritional supplements in particular vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and zinc. - an inverse association between anxiety, fear and nutrition habits during the COVID-19 pandemic. - differences in shopping preferences, processes applied to foods and vegetables and fruits due to the fear of virus contamination from the surfaces. Authors conclude that continuous surveillance of the psychological consequences for outbreaks should become routine as part of preparedness efforts worldwide.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of fear and anxiety on nutrition during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN Participants were recruited by an online survey in this cross-sectional study. The questionnaire included general demographic characteristics, level of fear and anxiety, and nutritional habits. The Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 test (GAD-7) were used to determine fear and anxiety. SETTING Turkey. PARTICIPANTS A total sample consisted of 1012 adults. RESULTS In pandemic, fear and anxiety caused individuals to skip breakfast and snacks less, but more at lunch. A positive significant correlation was observed between the increased consumption of yoghurt, cheese and water and FCV-19S scores. There was a positive significant correlation between cheese, legume, nuts-seeds, cake-cookies, dessert and tea consumption and GAD-7 scores. A 1-unit increase in FCV-19S scores affected 1·04 times of increased consumption of yoghurt, kefir, cheese, nuts-seeds, fruit (dry) and rice-pasta. A 1-unit increase in GAD-7 scores affected 1·03 times of increased consumption of egg and fruit (fresh); 1·04 times of increased consumption of cheese and other vegetables; 1·05 times of increased consumption of milk, meat, poultry, fish, legume, nuts-seeds, fruit (dry), cake-cookies and tea; 1·07 times of increased consumption of rice-pasta and coffee and 1·08 times of increased consumption of bread and dessert. CONCLUSIONS In pandemic, anxiety and fear led to changes in individuals' nutritional habits and food preferences. Continuous surveillance of psychological consequences for outbreaks should become routine as part of preparedness efforts worldwide. In addition, the effects of these psychological problems on nutrition should be evaluated.

Recent research has showed that the prevalence of insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms among Chinese middle school students was 21.90%, 43.70% and 37.40%, respectively, during the COVID-19 period. The aims of this study were: (1) to explore the prevalence of insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms among Chinese adolescents during the COVID-19 outbreak; (2) to investigate associations of socio-demographic factors and COVID-fear with insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms; (3) to investigate associations of nutrition and physical activity with insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms after adjusting socio-demographic factors and COVID-fear. This study included 1,794 students (males n= 56.20% and females n= 43.80%) aged 15 and 18 years. Results indicate that prevalence of insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms was high in the participating cohort. The highest prevalence was among female participants, left behind children and students with higher COVID-fear. Both better nutritional status, moderately and highly active physical activity levels were protective factors for depression and anxiety, while highly active physical activity level was significantly associated with lower level of insomnia symptoms. Authors conclude by emphasising on the important role of psychology counsellors in schools, health authorities and educators to carry out early psychological interventions.
Abstract
Mental health problems are common among adolescents and greatly influenced by stressful events. This study sought to assess the prevalence and correlates of insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms among Chinese adolescents during the COVID-19. METHOD Cross-sectional study (N = 1,794 adolescents, mean age = 15.26) was conducted in May 2020. An online survey was used to collect socio-demographic data, COVID-related fear (COVID-fear), nutrition, physical activity (PA) level and the symptoms of insomnia, depression and anxiety. RESULTS The prevalence of insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms was 37.80%, 48.20% and 36.70%, respectively, among Chinese adolescents during the pandemic. Generalized linear models revealed that female, left behind children, and students with greater COVID-fear tended to report symptoms of insomnia, depression and anxiety concurrently. After adjusting for socio-demographic factors and COVID-fear, better nutritional status and moderately active PA were both associated with lower levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms, while highly active PA was associated with lower levels of insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that more attention should be paid to psychological health among adolescents while combating COVID-19. To promote adolescents' mental health, educators should help adolescents develop a healthy lifestyle with balanced diet and regular exercise. Los problemas de salud mental son comunes en adolescentes y están influenciados por eventos estresantes. Se evaluó prevalencia y correlatos de síntomas de insomnio, depresión y ansiedad en adolescentes chinos durante el COVID-19. Método: En mayo de 2020 se realizó un estudio transversal (N = 1.794 adolescentes, edad media = 15,26) mediante una encuesta en línea para recopilar datos sociodemográficos, miedo relacionado con COVID-19, nutrición, actividad física (AF) y síntomas de insomnio, depresión y ansiedad. Resultados: La prevalencia de síntomas de insomnio, depresión y ansiedad fue del 37,80%, 48,20% y 36,70%, respectivamente. Modelos lineales generalizados revelaron que mujeres, niños abandonados y estudiantes con más miedo al COVID-19 tendían a informar síntomas de insomnio, depresión y ansiedad simultaneamente. Después de ajustar los factores sociodemográficos y el miedo al COVID-19, mejor estado nutricional y AF moderadamente activa se asociaron con niveles más bajos de síntomas de depresión y ansiedad, mientras que AF muy activa se asoció con niveles más bajos de insomnio, síntomas depresivos y de ansiedad. Conclusiones: Se debe prestar más atención a la salud psicológica de los adolescentes mientras se combate el COVID-19. Para promover su salud mental, los educadores deben ayudarles a desarrollar un estilo de vida saludable con una dieta equilibrada y ejercicio regular.

COVID-19 has been spreading to a growing number of countries and is recognized as a global health concern that has set global public health institutions on high alert. Improving health literacy is a strategic approach to preventing and controlling diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of suspected COVID-19 symptoms (S-COVID-19-S) with depression and health related quality of life (HRQoL), and the effect modification of health literacy on the associations among people who visited outpatient departments. This is a cross-sectional study which recruited participants (aged between 18 and 85 years) from outpatient departments of six hospitals and three health centers across Vietnam. Results indicate that participants with S-COVID-19-S had a higher likelihood of depression and lower HRQoL. Whereas, those participants having S-COVID-19-S and with higher health literacy had a low occurrence of depression and better HRQoL compared to those people with lower health literacy. Authors conclude that health literacy can help to protect the mental health and HRQoL of people with S-COVID-19-S during the pandemic.
Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic affects people's health and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), especially in those who have suspected COVID-19 symptoms (S-COVID-19-S). We examined the effect of modifications of health literacy (HL) on depression and HRQoL. A cross-sectional study was conducted from 14 February to 2 March 2020. 3947 participants were recruited from outpatient departments of nine hospitals and health centers across Vietnam. The interviews were conducted using printed questionnaires including participants' characteristics, clinical parameters, health behaviors, HL, depression, and HRQoL. People with S-COVID-19-S had a higher depression likelihood (OR, 2.88; p < 0.001), lower HRQoL-score (B, -7.92; p < 0.001). In comparison to people without S-COVID-19-S and low HL, those with S-COVID-19-S and low HL had 9.70 times higher depression likelihood (p < 0.001), 20.62 lower HRQoL-score (p < 0.001), for the people without S-COVID-19-S, 1 score increment of HL resulted in 5% lower depression likelihood (p < 0.001) and 0.45 higher HRQoL-score (p < 0.001), while for those people with S-COVID-19-S, 1 score increment of HL resulted in a 4% lower depression likelihood (p = 0.004) and 0.43 higher HRQoL-score (p < 0.001). People with S-COVID-19-S had a higher depression likelihood and lower HRQoL than those without. HL shows a protective effect on depression and HRQoL during the epidemic.

Depression and obesity are significant global health concerns. Depression can significantly impact physical health and reduced immune function. The aim of this study was to examine the potential benefits of a novel group psychological intervention program. The study is a preliminary quasi-experimental (single-arm) before-after pilot trial of a newly developed group-based psychological intervention program for people with depression and comorbid obesity. The program consisted of 10 two-hour group sessions held weekly. A total of 24 participants were recruited to the program across two pilot groups. Results indicate that there was a significant reduction in participants’ depression and anxiety scores by program-end. Some evidence also shows improvements in weight-related negative cognitions. Authors conclude that the group therapy program therefore has considerable potential to be effective in helping people enjoy better mental health and improve health outcomes.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression and obesity are significant global health concerns that commonly occur together. An integrated group cognitive behavioural therapy program was therefore developed to simultaneously address comorbid depression and obesity. METHODS Twenty-four participants (63% women, mean age 46 years) who screened positively for depression with a body mass index ≥25 were recruited from a self-referred general population sample. The group therapy program (10 two-hour weekly sessions) was examined in a single-arm, before-after pilot trial, conducted in a behavioural health clinic in Adelaide, Australia. Primary outcomes included survey and assessment-based analyses of depression, anxiety, body image, self-esteem, and weight (kg), assessed at four time-points: baseline, post-intervention, three-months and 12-months post program. Eighteen participants (75%) completed the program and all assessments. RESULTS Significant improvements in depression, anxiety, self-esteem and body shape concern scores, several quality of life domains, eating behaviours and total physical activity (among others) - but not weight - were observed over the course of the trial. CONCLUSIONS Results from this pilot trial suggest that combining interventions for depression and obesity may be useful. Further development of the program, particularly regarding the potential for physical health benefits, and a randomised controlled trial, are warranted. TRIAL REGISTRATION Trial registration: ANZCTR, ACTRN12617001079336, 13 July 2017. Retrospectively registered after date of the first consent (6 July 2017), but before the date of the first intervention session (20 July 2017).
