Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. Several studies have found bidirectional associations between ADHD and diabetes mellitus (DM). The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of ADHD in DM patients as well as the prevalence of DM in ADHD patients compared with those without ADHD, and to explore the impacts of ADHD on glycaemic control in patients with DM. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 17 articles; five were cohort studies, three were case-control studies, and nine were cross-sectional studies. Results through the pooled analyses suggest an important comorbid relationship between diabetes and ADHD. Overall, there was an increase in T2DM of 166% and 51% in children and adults with ADHD, respectively, relative to those without ADHD. Furthermore, there was an overall 37% increase in T1DM in children with ADHD. Authors conclude that further studies are needed to better understand the relationship between ADHD and DM. Additionally, it is important to take into consideration the type of DM if this association is different in various age groups (children and adults).
Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to investigate the prevalence estimate of diabetes mellitus (DM) among people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as well as the prevalence of ADHD among those with DM. In addition, the impact of ADHD on glycemic control in patients with DM was also assessed using a systematic review and meta-analysis of currently available published data. MATERIALS AND METHODS The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and PsycInfo databases were searched for potential studies. Two reviewers independently selected studies according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. All pooled analyses were conducted using the random-effects models on Review Manager 5.3. RESULTS Seventeen observational studies were included. The pooled results showed an increase in the prevalence of DM among patients with ADHD versus those without ADHD [type 1 DM OR 1.37 (95% CI: 1.17-1.61); type 2 DM OR 2.05 (95% CI: 1.37-3.07)]. There was an overall 35% increase in the prevalence of ADHD among patients with type 1 DM [OR: 1.35 (95% CI: 1.08-1.73)]. Children with type 1 DM and ADHD had higher levels of hemoglobin A1c [standardized mean of differences: 0.67 (95% CI: 0.48-0.86)], and prevalence of hypoglycemic and ketoacidosis index compared with those without ADHD. CONCLUSION Our study revealed the bidirectional associations between ADHD and DM. Patients with ADHD and type 1 DM comorbidities were more likely to have poorer diabetes control. More studies are needed to confirm this association and elucidate the underlying mechanism.

Symptoms, signs, or abnormal clinical parameters persisting two or more weeks after COVID-19 onset that do not return to a healthy baseline can potentially be considered long-term effects of the disease. The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of all the symptoms, signs, or abnormal laboratory parameters extending beyond the acute phase of COVID-19 reported to date. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 15 peer-reviewed studies that reported symptoms, signs, or laboratory parameters of patients at a post-COVID-19 stage (assessed two weeks or more after initial symptoms) in cohorts of COVID-19 patients. Results indicate that 80% (95% CI 65–92) of individuals with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis continued to have at least one overall effect beyond two weeks following acute infection. In total, 55 effects, including symptoms, signs, and laboratory parameters, were identified, with fatigue, anosmia [partial or complete loss of the sense of smell], lung dysfunction, abnormal chest X-ray/CT scan, and neurological disorders being the most common. Authors conclude that physicians should be aware of the symptoms, signs, and biomarkers present in patients previously affected by COVID-19 to promptly assess, identify and halt long COVID-19 progression, minimize the risk of chronic effects and help re-establish pre-COVID-19 health.
Abstract
Background. COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, can involve sequelae and other medical complications that last weeks to months after initial recovery, which has come to be called Long-COVID or COVID long-haulers. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to identify studies assessing long-term effects of COVID-19 and estimates the prevalence of each symptom, sign, or laboratory parameter of patients at a post-COVID-19 stage. Methods . LitCOVID (PubMed and Medline) and Embase were searched by two independent researchers. All articles with original data for detecting long-term COVID-19 published before 1 st of January 2021 and with a minimum of 100 patients were included. For effects reported in two or more studies, meta-analyses using a random-effects model were performed using the MetaXL software to estimate the pooled prevalence with 95% CI. Heterogeneity was assessed using I 2 statistics. This systematic review followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviewers and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, although the study protocol was not registered. Results. A total of 18,251 publications were identified, of which 15 met the inclusion criteria. The prevalence of 55 long-term effects was estimated, 21 meta-analyses were performed, and 47,910 patients were included. The follow-up time ranged from 14 to 110 days post-viral infection. The age of the study participants ranged between 17 and 87 years. It was estimated that 80% (95% CI 65-92) of the patients that were infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed one or more long-term symptoms. The five most common symptoms were fatigue (58%), headache (44%), attention disorder (27%), hair loss (25%), and dyspnea (24%). All meta-analyses showed medium (n=2) to high heterogeneity (n=13). Conclusions . In order to have a better understanding, future studies need to stratify by sex, age, previous comorbidities, the severity of COVID-19 (ranging from asymptomatic to severe), and duration of each symptom. From the clinical perspective, multi-disciplinary teams are crucial to developing preventive measures, rehabilitation techniques, and clinical management strategies with whole-patient perspectives designed to address long COVID-19 care.

Mediterranean Diet (MD) is currently considered one of the healthiest dietary models worldwide due to the high intake of antioxidants, dietary fibre, monounsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids, phytosterols and probiotics. The aim of this review was to present current literature showing evidence on the possible impact of MD on health and mental health. The review was based on 27 articles of which 13 were carried out in Spain, 3 in the USA, 3 in Italy, 4 in Australia and 4 in other EU countries. Literature shows that MD improves: - metabolic cardiovascular parameters with a reduced incidence of major cardiovascular events by approximately 30%. - metabolic balance in patients affected by type 2 diabetes mellitus. - biochemical markers for metabolic disorders as well as in patients at risk of specific cancer diseases. Additionally, not enough data is available on the MD effects on specific psychopathological issues. In fact, besides adherence to MD, other factors - which should be further investigated - also play a role in the effectiveness of the MD. Authors conclude that further studies are needed to address the efficacy of diet as an adjunctive treatment for mental disorders as well as for the management of comorbid cardiovascular and metabolic issues.
Abstract
Mediterranean Diet (MD) is currently considered one of the most healthy dietary models worldwide. It is generally based on the daily intake of fruit and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fish, white meats, and olive oil. It may also include moderate consumption of fermented dairy products, a low intake of red meat, and red/white wine during the main course. Even if the effect of MD on cancer prevention as well as on human metabolic and cardiovascular balance has been discussed, including the quality of life of the exposed population, the putative effects on mental health are still not properly investigated. This narrative review reports on some emerging pieces of evidence on the possible impact of MD on general health and the outcome of psychiatric disorders (e.g., major depression, anxiety) and encourages further studies to test the benefits of healthy food selection on the health of the general population.

Depression and obesity are significant global health concerns. Depression can significantly impact physical health and reduced immune function. The aim of this study was to examine the potential benefits of a novel group psychological intervention program. The study is a preliminary quasi-experimental (single-arm) before-after pilot trial of a newly developed group-based psychological intervention program for people with depression and comorbid obesity. The program consisted of 10 two-hour group sessions held weekly. A total of 24 participants were recruited to the program across two pilot groups. Results indicate that there was a significant reduction in participants’ depression and anxiety scores by program-end. Some evidence also shows improvements in weight-related negative cognitions. Authors conclude that the group therapy program therefore has considerable potential to be effective in helping people enjoy better mental health and improve health outcomes.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression and obesity are significant global health concerns that commonly occur together. An integrated group cognitive behavioural therapy program was therefore developed to simultaneously address comorbid depression and obesity. METHODS Twenty-four participants (63% women, mean age 46 years) who screened positively for depression with a body mass index ≥25 were recruited from a self-referred general population sample. The group therapy program (10 two-hour weekly sessions) was examined in a single-arm, before-after pilot trial, conducted in a behavioural health clinic in Adelaide, Australia. Primary outcomes included survey and assessment-based analyses of depression, anxiety, body image, self-esteem, and weight (kg), assessed at four time-points: baseline, post-intervention, three-months and 12-months post program. Eighteen participants (75%) completed the program and all assessments. RESULTS Significant improvements in depression, anxiety, self-esteem and body shape concern scores, several quality of life domains, eating behaviours and total physical activity (among others) - but not weight - were observed over the course of the trial. CONCLUSIONS Results from this pilot trial suggest that combining interventions for depression and obesity may be useful. Further development of the program, particularly regarding the potential for physical health benefits, and a randomised controlled trial, are warranted. Retrospectively registered after date of the first consent (6 July 2017), but before the date of the first intervention session (20 July 2017).
