Preterm birth (PTB) is the primary cause of infant mortality worldwide; and infants who survive have a higher risk of child disability. A recent Cochrane Review concluded that there is strong evidence that omega-3 fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), reduce early PTB (EPTB, <34 weeks gestation) and PTB (<37 weeks gestation) by 42% and 11%, respectively. The aim of this study was to investigate whether DHA intake at baseline alone could identify pregnancies for which high dose DHA supplementation lowered risk of EPTB and PTB. This study used the results from two randomised clinical trials of DHA supplementation during pregnancy in which participants completed the DHA-Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) before randomisation to 200mg/day or high dose DHA, i.e., 800mg/day or 1000mg/day. A total of 1400 participants were enrolled in the two trials. Results show that the DHA-FFQ predicted participants whose risk of EPTB and PTB was reduced by consuming a DHA supplement of 800mg/day or 1000mg/day compared to 200mg/day. In fact, participants who started the study with an average daily DHA intake of <150mg had a 64% lower rate of EPTB and a 24% lower rate of PTB if they were assigned to 800mg/day or 1000mg/day compared to 200mg/day DHA. Authors conclude that the DHA-FFQ identifies women who could benefit from high dose DHA supplementation at least as effectively as a blood measure of DHA but with far fewer barriers for clinical implementation.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Two randomized trials found women with low blood docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; an omega 3 fatty acid) had fewer early preterm births (<34 weeks gestation) if they were assigned to high dose DHA supplementation, however, there is currently no capacity for clinicians who care for pregnancies to obtain a blood assessment of DHA. Determining a way to identify women with low DHA intake whose risk could be lowered by high dose DHA supplementation is desired. OBJECTIVE To determine if assessing DHA intake can identify pregnancies that benefit from high dose DHA supplementation. STUDY DESIGN This secondary analysis used birth data from 1310 pregnant women who completed a 7-question food frequency questionnaire (DHA-FFQ) at 16.8 ± 2.5 weeks gestation that is validated to assess DHA status. They were then randomly assigned to a standard (200 mg/day) or high dose (800 or 1000 mg/day) DHA supplement for the remainder of pregnancy. Bayesian logistic regressions were fitted for early preterm birth and preterm birth as a function of DHA intake and assigned DHA dose. RESULTS Participants who consumed less than 150 mg/day DHA prior to 20 weeks' gestation (n = 810/1310, 58.1%) had a lower Bayesian posterior probability (pp) of early preterm birth if they were assigned to high dose DHA supplementation (1.4% vs 3.9%, pp = 0.99). The effect on preterm birth (<37 weeks) was also significant (11.3% vs 14.8%, pp = 0.97). CONCLUSION The DHA-FFQ can identify pregnancies that will benefit most from high dose DHA supplementation and reduce the risk of preterm birth. The DHA-FFQ is low burden to providers and patients and could be easily implemented in obstetrical practice.

The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the efficacy of vitamin and mineral supplements in the management of glycaemic control and lipid metabolism for type 2 diabetic patients to inform clinical practice. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of one hundred and seventy articles with a total of 4223 adults with T2DM. Participants were randomised to either the placebo/no treatment group (n= 6345) or to the treatment group (n= 7878). Results show that: - chromium was the most effective micronutrient for decreasing fasting blood glucose and insulin resistance. - vitamin K was the top-ranked micronutrient in reducing haemoglobin A1C and fasting insulin levels. - vanadium was the top-ranked micronutrient in total cholesterol reductions. - niacin was ranked as the most effective in triglycerides reductions and increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. - vitamin E was the top-ranked micronutrient in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol reductions. Abstract
Medical nutrition treatment can manage diabetes and slow or prevent its complications. The comparative effects of micronutrient supplements, however, have not yet been well established. We aimed at evaluating the comparative effects of vitamin and mineral supplements on managing glycemic control and lipid metabolism for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to inform clinical practice. Electronic and hand searches for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were performed until June 1, 2022. We selected RCTs enrolling patients with T2DM who were treated with vitamin supplements, mineral supplements, or placebo/no treatment. Data were pooled via frequentist random-effects network meta-analyses. A total of 170 eligible trials and 14223 participants were included. Low to very low certainty evidence established chromium supplements as the most effective in reducing fasting blood glucose levels and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (SUCRAs: 90.4% and 78.3%, respectively). Vitamin K supplements ranked best in reducing glycated hemoglobin A1c and fasting insulin levels (SUCRAs: 97.0% and 82.3%, respectively), with moderate to very low certainty evidence. Menopause means both that the ovaries stop producing eggs and that there is a sharp decline in the production of female hormones such as progesterone and oestrogen. The aim of this study was to discuss the benefits of exercise and dietary supplements during menopause. This study was a systematic review of ten articles. Results showed that: - both strength and aerobic training, as well as supplementation with calcium and vitamin D, increase bone mineral density. - combined strength and resistance training provide cardiovascular benefits, increase strength and muscle mass, and reduce the risk of sarcopenia. - physical exercise has a synergistic effect with some supplements, enhancing their effectiveness. Authors concluded that physical exercise can help combat many of the symptoms associated with menopause, providing benefits for a more vital menopause and a more vital old age.
Abstract
UNLABELLED With the aging of the population in developed countries, the number of middle-aged and older women is progressively increasing. During this stage, women suffer from a number of signs and symptoms that could be reduced or treated with physical exercise and dietary supplements. The main objective of this study was to analyse the benefits of exercise and dietary supplements during menopause. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic review of the scientific literature was performed according to the PRISMA 2020 protocol, searching the PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, and WOS databases. Studies that met the inclusion criteria were assessed for methodological quality using the PEDro or AMSTAR-2 scales. RESULTS The searches yielded a total of 104 results, of which 10 were selected, with methodological quality ranging from fair to excellent. Each article examined the combination of a dietary supplement plan versus a placebo; plus an exercise routine versus another routine or a sedentary lifestyle. The results showed the benefits of combining a nutritional supplementation plan with an exercise routine during menopause. CONCLUSIONS The practice of weekly strength and endurance exercises, together with the consumption of certain dietary supplements, may be a good resource for coping with menopause in a healthy way.

Observational data show preterm birth risk is increased with low maternal selenium serum levels. Selenium is routinely included in supplements marketed to pregnant women, although studies have drawn conflicting findings about whether it provides benefit. The aim of this study was to identify and analyse the available interventional and observational evidence of the effect of selenium supplementation during pregnancy on preterm birth (PTB) prevention. This study was a systematic review of thirty-two studies - 5 observational studies and 27 randomised trials. Results showed that there was no association between selenium supplementation and any clinical outcome. Authors concluded that since there was insufficient evidence in all outcomes, selenium supplementation during pregnancy cannot be recommended as a part of routine antenatal care.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE Low maternal selenium status has been associated with poor pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth. This study aimed to evaluate available evidence of the effects of selenium supplementation during pregnancy on preterm birth and related maternal, fetal, and newborn outcomes. DATA SOURCES MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Global Index Medicus, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched on June 23, 2022, without language or time restrictions. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Randomized controlled trials and nonrandomized interventional studies were included if they compared the effects of selenium supplementation with placebo or no treatment among pregnant women. The review protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (identification number: CRD42022383669). METHODS For outcomes reported by ≥1 study, a meta-analysis was conducted. Because of the small number of studies and high clinical heterogeneity between populations, random-effects models were used. The Risk of Bias 2 and Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies - of Interventions tools were used to assess study quality, and Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation analysis was used to determine the certainty of evidence for each outcome. RESULTS Literature searches identified 5105 unique records, and 32 studies met the eligibility criteria. Of note, 11 reports were not included for analysis following research integrity assessments. Moreover, 10 trials and 3 observational studies met the inclusion criteria; however, only 8 trials (1851 women) and 1 prospective cohort study (71,728 women) reported on at least 1 review outcome. Our results could not determine the effect of selenium supplementation on preterm birth at <37 weeks of gestation (relative risk, 0.65; 95% confidence interval, 0.26-1.63; very low certainty evidence) and <34 weeks of gestation (relative risk, 1.05; 95% confidence interval, 0.59-1.44; very low certainty evidence). CONCLUSION There is limited evidence on the effects of selenium supplementation during pregnancy. Further trials, with larger sample sizes, more representative populations, and reliable assessment of maternal selenium status at trial entry, are required.

A deficiency of the thyroid hormone causes hypothyroidism (HT), whereas Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is mainly an organ-specific autoimmune condition. Both HT and AIT are characterised by low-grade inflammation and inflammation in the thyroid gland. Dietary supplements may offer health benefits; however, previous research findings are inconclusive. This systematic review evaluated twenty-two controlled studies to understand the effectiveness of dietary supplements in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress and improving antioxidant and thyroid parameters in patients with HT or AIT. The efficacy of dietary supplements in improving thyroid health and reducing inflammation and oxidative stress was inconclusive due to the low quality of the included studies and the limited number of available studies. Selenium supplements might be beneficial in improving thyroid parameters and inflammation in patients with HT or AIT. Even though the therapeutic benefits of dietary supplements in treating thyroid disease were inconclusive, healthcare professionals can use them to address the common nutritional deficiencies in people with HT and AIT. Further, large, long-term, robust studies are required to assess the therapeutic utility of different dietary supplements in promoting the health of the thyroid gland.
Abstract
This systematic review aims to summarise the results of controlled trials on dietary supplements (DS) usage and inflammation, oxidative stress, antioxidant status, and thyroid parameter improvement in hypothyroidism (HT)/Hashimoto's thyroiditis (AIT) patients. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (no. CRD42022365149). A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases resulted in the identification of nineteen randomised controlled trials and three non-randomised studies for the review; three studies examined the effect of supplementation with vitamin D, twelve studies-with selenium, and seven studies-with other DS. Based on very limited evidence, the lack of influence of vitamin D supplementation on inflammatory parameters was found, while no studies have examined oxidative stress and antioxidant status parameters, and only one provided results for a single thyroid parameter after an intervention. Some evidence was found proving that selenium supplementation may decrease inflammation and improve thyroid parameters, but reaching a conclusion about its influence on oxidative stress and antioxidant status is not possible because of the insufficient number of studies. Additionally, due to examining other DS (e.g., multicomponent, Nigella sativa, and genistein) only in single studies, conclusions cannot be drawn. Further long-term, high-quality randomised controlled trials are necessary to better understand the influence of DS on inflammation, oxidative stress, and antioxidant status, as well as their potential to improve thyroid gland function in HT/AIT patients.

Sirtuins (SIRT1) are NAD+-dependent deacetylases, an enzyme that plays a key role in enhancing metabolic efficiency. Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a precursor to NAD+. NMN supplementation may help to reduce the risk of developing metabolic diseases and cardiovascular diseases. This randomised, double-blinded, and placebo-controlled, parallel trial investigated the effects of 12 weeks of 125 mg NMN supplementation on metabolic health parameters, including CVD risk factors, blood NAD+ metabolites level, and SIRT1 expression in middle-aged men and women. Serum nicotinamide was significantly higher and arterial stiffness was lower in the NMN test group of middle-aged men and women after 12 weeks of NMN supplementation. The results of the study indicate that the administration of 250mg of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) daily for an extended period is considered safe and well-tolerated. Healthcare professionals can use this finding to understand the significant implications of the use of NMN as a potential therapeutic agent in individuals seeking to improve their metabolic and cardiovascular health. Further robust studies are required to evaluate the effects of NMN supplementation due to the limitations and high baseline variability between the participants of this study.

Summary Review:
Introduction
- Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a coenzyme involved in metabolism. When we age, NAD+ levels decline resulting in poorer metabolism and age-related disease such as cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a precursor in the biosynthesis of NAD+.
- This double-blind, randomised control trial aimed to determine the effect of supplementing NMN on NAD+ levels, CVD risk factors and sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) expression, which relies on NAD+ for adequate functioning.
Methods
- 36 healthy male and female individuals aged between 40-65 years of age were assigned to either NMN (125mg/day) or placebo for 12 weeks.
- One capsule was taken twice per day after meals.
- Serum nicotinamide (NAM), NAD+, NMN, advanced glycation end products (AGES), 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and SIRT1 mRNA expression were measured.
- The condition of blood vessels (arterial stiffness) was also assessed using the ankle brachial index (ABI).
- In a sub-analysis, individuals with hypertension, above average body mass index (BMI), or blood glucose level were also assessed for blood vessel condition using the ABI.
Results
- The results showed that from baseline serum NAM decreased in the placebo group (P=0.014), whereas it increased in the NMN group (P=0.006). This resulted in an increase in the NMN group compared to placebo (P=0.037).
- Interestingly serum NAM was lower in the NMN group compared to placebo at baseline (P=0.001).
- There was no statistically significant difference in ABI with NMN supplementation.
- Amongst those with hypertension there was also no change in ABI. However, those with high BMI or blood glucose, there was an improvement in vascular condition compared to placebo (P=<0.007 and P=0.019 respectively).

Abstract
Many animal studies have shown that oral administration of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) precursor nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) prevents the reduction of NAD+ levels in organs and tissues, helping alleviate aging-related diseases. However, there are very few clinical reports of NMN supplementation in humans. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the influence of a 12-week NMN oral supplementation on biochemical and metabolic health parameters. A 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group clinical trial was conducted. A total of 36 healthy middle-aged participants received one capsule of either 125 mg NMN or placebo twice a day. Among the NAD+ metabolites, the levels of nicotinamide in the serum were significantly higher in the NMN intake group than in the placebo group. Pulse wave velocity values indicating arterial stiffness tended to decrease in the NMN intake group. However, no significant difference was found between the two groups. Long-term NMN supplementation at 250 mg/day was well tolerated and did not cause adverse events. NMN safely and effectively elevated NAD+ metabolism in healthy middle-aged adults. Additionally, NMN supplementation showed potential in alleviating arterial stiffness.

The effects of probiotics supplementation on glycaemic control among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised clinical trials.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), an endocrine and metabolic disease, is influenced by host physiology and environmental factors. Recent studies have shown that the gut microbiota plays a key role in the maintenance of host homeostasis and pathogenesis of T2DM. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a probiotic intervention on glycaemic control in T2DM patients and to evaluate the variations in these effects due to participant characteristics and intervention characteristics. This study was a systematic review and meta-analysis of thirty randomised-controlled studies including a total of 1,827 individuals. Results showed that probiotic supplementation had favourable effects on glycaemic control in T2DM patients. Bifdobacterium and food-type probiotics had greater glucose-lowering effects than other probiotic genera and types of vehicles used to deliver the probiotics. Authors concluded that the administration of probiotics may be a promising adjuvant therapy for glycaemic control in T2DM patients.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review and meta-analysis study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of probiotics supplementation on glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) based on the data from the randomised clinical trials (RCTs). METHODS PubMed, Web of Sciences, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched from the inception to October 2022, and RCTs about probiotics and T2DM were collected. The standardised mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to estimate the effects of probiotics supplementation on glycaemic control related parameters, e.g. fasting blood glucose (FBG), insulin, haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and homeostasis model of assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). RESULTS Thirty RCTs including 1,827 T2MD patients were identified. Compared with the placebo group, the probiotics supplementation group had a significant decrease in the parameters of glycaemic control, including FBG (SMD = - 0.331, 95% CI - 0.424 to - 0.238, Peffect < 0.001), insulin (SMD = - 0.185, 95% CI - 0.313 to - 0.056, Peffect = 0.005), HbA1c (SMD = - 0.421, 95% CI - 0.584 to - 0.258, Peffect < 0.001), and HOMA-IR (SMD = - 0.224, 95% CI - 0.342 to - 0.105, Peffect < 0.001). Further subgroup analyses showed that the effect was larger in the subgroups of Caucasians, high baseline body mass index (BMI ≥ 30.0 kg/m2), Bifidobacterium and food-type probiotics (Psubgroup < 0.050). CONCLUSION This study supported that probiotics supplementation had favourable effects on glycaemic control in T2DM patients. It may be a promising adjuvant therapy for patients with T2DM.

Reductions in food intake can lead to the activation of neurological pathways that increase hunger and food cravings. Adjusting nutrient intake has the potential to serve as an effective strategy for increasing feelings of satiety, which can lead to improved appetite control. The aim of this study was to determine if greater weight loss and greater changes in body composition and metabolic outcomes could be achieved following a 12-wk energy-restricted diet that included twice-daily consumption of a protein and fibre-based multi-ingredient nutritional supplement shake (HPF) compared with an isocaloric low-protein/lower-fibre placebo (LPF) in adults with overweight and obesity. This study is a double-blind randomised placebo-controlled study. Two hundred and six healthy adults were recruited and randomly assigned to intervention groups in a 1:1 ratio. Results show that the habitual consumption of an HPF preload 30 min before breakfast and lunch resulted in greater weight loss compared with an isocaloric LPF preload in overweight/obese adults. In addition, improved metabolic outcomes were observed in the HPF group throughout the 84-d randomized controlled trial. Authors conclude that diet composition rather than energy reduction alone may influence the success of a weight-loss regimen, potentially including protein and fibre content.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Higher protein and fiber diets promote weight management and metabolic health. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine if greater weight loss and positive changes in metabolic outcomes could be achieved with twice-daily consumption of a high-protein and fiber-based multi-ingredient nutritional shake (HPF) compared with an isocaloric low-protein, lower fiber-based placebo (LPF). METHODS Study procedures were conducted by an independent research organization under clinicaltrials.gov registration NCT03057873. Healthy overweight and obese adults [n = 206; BMI (kg/m2): 27-35; 70% female] were randomly assigned to HPF or LPF. All participants were prescribed an energy-restricted diet (500 kcal/d less than energy needs) and consumed a HPF (17 g protein, 6 g fiber) or LPF (1 g protein, 3 g fiber) shake 30 min before breakfast and lunch for 12 wk. Primary outcomes included body weight and total body fat percentage. Blood samples were collected at days (D) 0, 28, 56, and 84 for secondary analyses related to metabolic markers of health. RESULTS Although weight loss occurred in both groups, HPF had greater weight loss at D84 compared with LPF (-3.3 kg vs. -1.8 kg, P < 0.05). Percentage body fat decreased in both groups (HPF: -1.33%, LPF: -1.09%; P < 0.001) with no differences between groups. Serum total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and oxidized LDL decreased between -5.1% to -8.3%, whereas adiponectin increased over time in both groups; these changes occurred to a greater extent in HPF compared with LPF (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS A multi-ingredient HPF nutritional supplement shake consumed as a preload before breakfast and lunch positively influenced weight management and metabolic outcomes in overweight adults compared with an LPF placebo. These findings suggest that specific nutrient factors (i.e., potentially including protein, fiber, and bioactive content) other than calorie reduction alone influence the success of a weight-loss regimen. Vitamin D is an important fat-soluble vitamin with steroid hormone function. It is predominately known for its essential role in calcium homeostasis and bone mineralisation. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a vitamin D supplementation with 1600 IU Vitamin D3 per day starting in early pregnancy versus placebo on maternal and foetal lipid parameters, body fat distribution as well as pregnancy outcomes. This study is a secondary analysis of the vitamin D And LIfestyle for gestational diabetes prevention trial (DALI) Vitamin D study, including overweight/obese pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance at randomization before 20 weeks’ gestation. Results show a significant increase of maternal vitamin D levels throughout pregnancy and in cord blood in the supplementation group compared with the placebo group. However, there weren’t any significant differences between the treatment arms in maternal lipid parameters nor in foetal lipid parameters or birth outcomes. Authors conclude that daily vitamin D3 supplementation in overweight/obese pregnant women with high levels of vitamin D sufficiency does not improve maternal or foetal lipid parameters, body fat distribution or pregnancy outcomes and should not be used in pregnancy for these indications.
Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is a common finding in overweight/obese pregnant women and is associated with increased risk for adverse pregnancy outcome. Both maternal vitamin D deficiency and maternal obesity contribute to metabolic derangements in pregnancy. We aimed to assess the effects of vitamin D3 supplementation in pregnancy versus placebo on maternal and fetal lipids. Main inclusion criteria were: women <20 weeks' gestation, BMI ≥ 29 kg/m2. Eligible women (n = 154) were randomized to receive vitamin D3 (1600 IU/day) or placebo. Assessments were performed <20, 24-28 and 35-37 weeks and at birth. Linear regression models were used to assess effects of vitamin D on maternal and cord blood lipids. In the vitamin D group significantly higher total 25-OHD and 25-OHD3 levels were found in maternal and cord blood compared with placebo. Adjusted regression models did not reveal any differences in triglycerides, LDL-C, HDL-C, free fatty acids, ketone bodies or leptin between groups. Neonatal sum of skinfolds was comparable between the two groups, but correlated positively with cord blood 25-OH-D3 (r = 0.34, p = 0.012). Vitamin D supplementation in pregnancy increases maternal and cord blood vitamin D significantly resulting in high rates of vitamin D sufficiency. Maternal and cord blood lipid parameters were unaffected by Vitamin D3 supplementation.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and dysmenorrhea are common cyclical and recurrent gynaecologic complications of women in the reproductive age and can adversely affect their wellbeing and quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of curcumin on Vitamin D in women who suffered from both PMS and dysmenorrhea. This study is a 3-month, triple-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Participants were randomly allocated to one of the two arms: the curcumin group (n=38) or placebo group (n=38). Results demonstrate that supplementation of curcuminoids plus piperine for three menstrual cycles, significantly improved the vitamin D status in women with PMS and dysmenorrhea. Additionally, curcumin treatment was associated with a significant reduction in the serum levels of aspartate transaminase [enzyme] and direct bilirubin, suggesting that curcumin may affect liver health even in healthy subjects. Authors conclude that future studies should investigate the dose-response association for the beneficial effect of curcuminoids on Vitamin D deficiency.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D has an established role in female reproduction. There is also evidence for an association between vitamin D levels and menstrual problems such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and dysmenorrhea. Curcumin, is a bioactive polyphenol constituent of turmeric, that can potentially interact with vitamin D receptors and its molecular targets. This study evaluated the effects of curcumin on vitamin D levels in young women with PMS and dysmenorrhea. METHODS In this randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial, women with PMS and dysmenorrhea were divided randomly into experimental and control groups to receive one capsule (500 mg of curcuminoid+ 5 mg piperine, or placebo) daily, from approximately 7 days before until 3 days after menstruation for three consecutive menstrual cycles. Serum vitamin D levels, renal function, and liver enzymes were also measured before and after intervention. RESULTS A total of 76 subjects (38 in each group) were recruited into the trial. Curcumin significantly increased the median (IQR) serum levels of vitamin D [from 12.8 ng/ml (7.0-24.6) to 16.2 ng/ml (6.4-28.8); P = 0.045], compared with placebo [from 18.6 ng/ml (2.2-26.8) to 21.3 ng/ml (5.2-27.1); P = 0.17]. Serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase and direct bilirubin were reduced by the end of trial in the curcumin group (p < 0.05), but did not change significantly in the control group (p > 0.05). Finally, no significant differences in levels of fasting blood glucose were detected between curcumin and placebo groups. CONCLUSION Curcumin supplementation in women with PMS and dysmenorrhea led to a significant improvement of vitamin D, liver function enzyme test, but did not affect blood glucose.
