The consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is high in today's society, which may lead to weight gain, inflammation, and a number of obesity-associated diseases. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the associations and causal links between the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and cancer, stroke, depression, and cause-specific mortality. Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages significantly increased the risk of cancer, strokes, depression, and cause-specific mortality when compared with the consumption of low or no-sugar-sweetened beverages. As little as a 250ml increment of sugar-sweetened beverages was associated with an increase in risk. Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages increases the risk of ischemic stroke by 10%, CVD-caused mortality by 13%, and cancer-caused mortality by 6.0% compared to those who consume less or no sugar-sweetened beverages. These findings can be used by healthcare professionals to understand the clinical significance of intervention strategies that reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. It is imperative to conduct additional robust studies as there is an insufficient amount of evidence at present to establish a causal connection between the consumption of sugary beverages and the risk of depression, stroke, cancer, and cause-specific mortality.
Abstract
The associations between sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption and the risk of stroke, depression, cancer, and cause-specific mortality have not been determined, and the quantitative aspects of this link remain unclear. This meta-analysis therefore conducted a systematic review and dose-response analysis to determine their causal links. The database searches were conducted in PubMed, Cochrane library, Embase, Web of Science up to 10 November 2021. The intervention effects were evaluated by relative risk (RR) with 95% confidences (CI). Thirty-two articles met the inclusion criteria. Higher levels of SSB consumption significantly increased the risk of stroke (RR 1.12, 95% CI 1.03-1.23), depression (1.25, 1.11-1.41), cancer (1.10, 1.03-1.17), and all-cause mortality (1.08, 1.05-1.11) compared with none or lower SSB intake. The associations were dose-dependent, with per 250 mL increment of SSB intake daily increasing the risk of stroke, depression, cancer, and all-cause mortality by RR 1.09 (1.03-1.15), 1.08 (1.06-1.10), 1.17 (1.04-1.32), and 1.07 (1.03-1.11), respectively. The link was curved for depression and cancer risk (pnon-linear < 0.05). Subgroup analysis suggested that higher SSB intake increased ischemic stroke by 10%, CVD-caused mortality by 13%, and cancer-caused mortality by 6.0% than none or lower SSB consumption. It is suggested that SSB accounts for a leading risk factor of stroke, depression, cancer, and mortality, and that the risk rises in parallel with the increment of SSB intake (and is affected by participant characteristics).

Authors conclude that the results cannot be generalised to all women suffering from PMS since the study recruited only medical students. Furthermore, the long-term effectiveness of the intervention is unknown because the participants were only followed for two menstrual cycles after the end of the intervention.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the effect of internet-based counselling with a cognitive-behavioural approach on symptom severity of women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and their quality of life during the perimenstrual and late follicular phases of the menstrual cycle. Moreover, the PMS-related disability and attitude toward menstruation were investigated as secondary outcomes. DATA DESCRIPTION We provide data generated in a randomized controlled trial with two-parallel arms carried out on 92 female university students aged 18-35 years who had moderate to severe PMS, residing at halls of the Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. PMS severity was assessed during two menstrual cycles before intervention (baseline) and during two cycles just after ending the two-month intervention using Daily Record of Severity of Problems (DRSP) and the quality of life using the Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire-Short Form (Q-LES-Q-SF) on days 1-2 and 11-13 of the menstrual cycle at the baseline and post-intervention. Also, the PMS-related disability was assessed using Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) and attitude toward menstruation using Menstrual Attitude Questionnaire (MAQ) at the baseline and post-intervention. Participant satisfaction and views on intervention effectiveness were also assessed using a single Likert question.

Changes in creatine homeostasis naturally occur across the lifecycle, and recent findings suggest supplementation may be important during different phases of a woman's lifespan. The aim of this review was to highlight the current findings around creatine metabolism in females from young adulthood to old age. The literature indicates creatine supplementation in females may improve exercise performance, pregnancy outcomes, cognitive performance, and reduce mental fatigue. Based on these findings, the authors conclude creatine supplementation has a potentially positive implication for numerous metabolic, hormonal, and neurological outcomes for females. They suggest future studies should evaluate creatine supplementation and metabolism with respect to the menstrual and reproductive cycle.
Abstract
Despite extensive research on creatine, evidence for use among females is understudied. Creatine characteristics vary between males and females, with females exhibiting 70-80% lower endogenous creatine stores compared to males. Understanding creatine metabolism pre- and post-menopause yields important implications for creatine supplementation for performance and health among females. Due to the hormone-related changes to creatine kinetics and phosphocreatine resynthesis, supplementation may be particularly important during menses, pregnancy, post-partum, during and post-menopause. Creatine supplementation among pre-menopausal females appears to be effective for improving strength and exercise performance. Post-menopausal females may also experience benefits in skeletal muscle size and function when consuming high doses of creatine (0.3 g·kg-1·d-1); and favorable effects on bone when combined with resistance training. Pre-clinical and clinical evidence indicates positive effects from creatine supplementation on mood and cognition, possibly by restoring brain energy levels and homeostasis. Creatine supplementation may be even more effective for females by supporting a pro-energetic environment in the brain. The purpose of this review was to highlight the use of creatine in females across the lifespan with particular emphasis on performance, body composition, mood, and dosing strategies.

While precise communication pathways are not yet clear, it is hypothesised this pathway may be an important therapeutic target in complex psychiatric and gastrointestinal disorders. The aim of this review is to summarize the role of gut hormones in the GBA and focus on how the microbiota interact with these hormones in health and disease. The literature shows the gut microbiota can affect the metabolism of various gut hormones, and these hormones can influence the microbiota. Evidence suggests this cross-talk may be a key regulator in appetite, immune response, stress response, and metabolism. Based on this review, the authors conclude the gut microbiota-hormone homeostatic relationship provides insight on the complex communication between the gut and the brain. They suggest future research should target the microbiota-hormones-gut-brain axis to develop new therapeutic strategies to psychiatric disorders.
Abstract
The homeostasis of the gut-brain axis has been shown to exert several effects on physiological and psychological health. The gut hormones released by enteroendocrine cells scattered throughout the gastrointestinal tract are important signaling molecules within the gut-brain axis. The interaction between gut microbiota and gut hormones has been greatly appreciated in gut-brain cross-talk. The microbiota plays an essential role in modulating many gut-brain axis-related diseases, ranging from gastrointestinal disorders to psychiatric diseases. Similarly, gut hormones also play pleiotropic and important roles in maintaining health, and are key signals involved in gut-brain axis. More importantly, gut microbiota can affect the release and functions of gut hormones. This review highlights the role of gut microbiota in the gut-brain axis and focuses on how microbiota-related gut hormones modulate various physiological functions. Future studies could target the microbiota-hormones-gut brain axis to develop novel therapeutics for different psychiatric and gastrointestinal disorders, such as obesity, anxiety, and depression.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder affecting women in their reproductive years. The condition is often associated with higher rates of depression and anxiety, particularly with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of >30. As weight-loss has shown to improve a host of symptoms experienced in PCOS, the authors sought to investigate whether weight-loss would also lead to a reduction in depressive symptoms. This secondary analysis of a longitudinal, randomised trial of 155 women, compared a combined lifestyle intervention of diet advice, eating behaviour, exercise and standardised Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) to standard advice for weight reduction. Over a 12-months the chosen lifestyle interventions demonstrated a sustained improvement in self-assessed depression scores, though independent of weight-loss. However, weight-loss itself was closely linked with improved body image and self-esteem. Additional monitoring of hormones (androgens, insulin, cortisol) and calculations for insulin sensitivity (HOMA-IR ) did not show any direct link with depressive scores. This study affirms the benefit of integrative lifestyle approaches on emotional well-being in women with PCOS. Practitioners might find it of interest that improvements in emotional well-being can occur independent of weight loss in individuals experiencing depressive symptoms with PCOS.
Abstract
Many women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) report high depression rates. The relationship between PCOS and these high depression rates is unclear. Two-component lifestyle interventions have revealed short-term effects on depression scores in this group of women. In general, 3-component interventions including diet, exercise, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) are more effective in the long-term to improve emotional well-being. This has not yet been studied in women with PCOS. This study examined the effect of 20 CBT lifestyle (LS) sessions combined with a healthy diet and physical therapy with or without 9 months additional feedback through Short Message Service (SMS) via mobile phone, compared to care as usual (CAU, involving advice to lose weight). In this secondary analysis, 155 women with PCOS and a BMI above 25 kg/m2 were eligible. Depression scores decreased significantly in the LS programme compared to CAU (P = 0.045). In both the LS programme without SMS (P = 0.036) and the LS programme with SMS (P = 0.011) depression scores decreased while no change was observed in CAU (P = 0.875). Self-esteem scores improved significantly in the LS programme compared to CAU (P = 0.027). No differences in body image scores were observed in LS participants compared to CAU (P = 0.087), although body image improved significantly in both the LS without SMS (P = 0.001) and with SMS (P = 0.008) study arms. We found no significant mediating role by androgens in the relationship between LS participants and emotional well-being. Only weight-loss mediated the relationship between LS and self-esteem. To conclude, a three-component lifestyle intervention programme with or without additional SMS resulted in significant improvements in depression and self-esteem compared to CAU, in women with PCOS, obesity, and a wish to achieve a pregnancy. Testosterone, androstenedione, DHEA, insulin, HOMA-IR, and cortisol did not mediate this effect. Weight loss mediated the effects on self-esteem but not on depression and body-image. This suggests that lifestyle treatment independent of weight loss can reduce depression and body-image, but both lifestyle treatment and weight loss can improve self-esteem. Thus, a three-component lifestyle intervention based on CBT could prove successful in improving mood in women with PCOS who are overweight or obese and attempting to become pregnant.

The natural decline of estrogen that occurs around menopause contributes to depressive symptoms, and the severity of symptoms depends on many sociodemographic and genetic factors. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of various factors on the development of depression in women through the lifespan and establish the relationship between the severity of depression and presence of specific genes. This study analyzed 1453 women in the three different stages of menopause (pre-, peri- and post-menopause) who completed a validated questionnaire for measuring severity of depression and had blood samples taken to identify gene fragments. The results indicated depressive symptoms to be present in 27% of women. The predictive sociodemographic factors for depressive symptoms in this population are unemployment and the postmenopausal stage. Associations between the 5-HTT and MOA-A gene and depressive symptoms were also found. Based on these results, the authors conclude that while menopause is natural, the severity of symptoms is associated with various sociodemographic and genetic factors.
Abstract
Menopause is an important event in a woman's life associated with hormonal changes that play a substantial role in the functioning of her body. A decline in the level of estrogens contributes to depressive symptoms and mood disorders during this period. The severity of depressive symptoms experienced by middle-aged women depends on many factors, including sociodemographic data (e.g., menopause, employment status, and marital status) and genetic variables (MAO-A and 5-HTT gene polymorphisms). In order to assess their influence on the development of depression in females, we analyzed 1453 healthy Polish women in different stages of menopause. Based on the results, we found that the l/l + l/s inheritance model for the 5-HTT gene polymorphism was more common in women without and with moderate depressive symptoms according to the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), while the l/s model was more often observed in women with mild depression. Moreover, the overdominant 3/3 + 4/4 genotype of the MAO-A gene polymorphism was more often found in respondents without depressive symptoms, while women with depressive symptoms had more often the overdominant 3/4 genotype.

The mental health of farmers can be affected by several factors, including pesticide exposure, financial problems, climate issues, and poor physical health. A total of 167 studies are included in this systematic review incorporating data from the studies conducted in 34 countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia. There is a need for risk assessment that influences farmers' mental health, according to this systematic review. There is a need for more robust studies to evaluate the impact of climate change and pesticide exposure on farmers' mental health and to determine which strategies can be used to help them find therapies. Using the results of this systematic review, healthcare professionals can raise awareness about mental health issues and assist farmers in identifying the symptoms, allowing them to seek help.
Abstract
Recently, concern has increased globally over farmers' mental health issues. We present a systematic review of the outcomes, locations, study designs, and methods of current studies on farmers' mental health. In particular, this review aims to fill an important gap in understanding of the potential key risk factors affecting farmers' mental health around the world. 167 articles on farmer mental health were included in a final systematic review using a standardized electronic literature search strategy and PRISMA guidelines. The four most-cited influences on farmers' mental health in the reviewed literature respectively were pesticide exposure, financial difficulties, climate variabilities/drought, and poor physical health/past injuries. The majority of studies were from developed countries, most specifically from the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Comparative studies on the mental health of farmers and other occupational workers showed mixed results, with a larger portion identifying that psychological health disturbances were more common in farmers and farm-workers. Knowledge of farmer psychological disorder risk factors and its impacts are essential for reducing the burden of mental illness. Further research will be required on climate change impacts, developing country farmers' mental health, and information on how to reduce help-seeking barriers amongst farmers.

This review assesses the current literature on intestinal microbiome and its association with stress, anxiety and depression in patients with IBS. Based on existing studies, the authors found the gut microbiota forms a crucial link between the intestine and nervous system. Therapies targeted at both modulating the gut microbiome and psychological interventions are recommended. The authors conclude further randomised clinical trials are needed to better understand which therapies work best for patients with IBS.

Psychological comorbidity is highly present in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Recent research points to a role of intestinal microbiota in visceral hypersensitivity, anxiety, and depression. Increased disease reactivity to psychological stress has been described too. A few clinical studies have attempted to identify features of dysbiosis in IBS. While animal studies revealed strong associations between stress and gut microbiota, studies in humans are rare. This review covers the most important studies on intestinal microbial correlates of psychological and clinical features in IBS, including stress, anxiety, and depression.

With age, the occurrence of total testosterone (TT) deficiency in men also increases. Such deficiency can have a detrimental impact on the musculoskeletal system leading to bone and muscle loss, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. Hence muscle weakness is a known a predicitve factor for chronic disease. Whereby reference ranges have been set for testosterone levels in young healthy men, uncertainty exists about optimal levels throughout different age ranges, ethnicities and in concurrence with diseases. This observational study evaluated how TT deficiency and muscle weakness assessed via grip strength, relates to chronic health conditions in men. The study included 2399 young, middle-aged, and older men in the US, with a diverse ethnic backgrounds, who presented with and without testosterone deficiency. The findings indicated that TT levels were highest amongst young men, yet no particular difference was seen in levels between middle-aged and older men. Grip strength decreased in the higher age categories. Chronic health conditions were more common in young and older men who displayed testosterone deficiencies, whilst low testosterone and reduced grip strength were linked to the presence of chronic disease in all age groups. Overall the study confirmed previous research, that in men with testosterone deficiency chronic disease was much more prevalent, even after accounting for other variables. The study also observed a much lower average of TT levels in young men compared to previous research, in mostly white males. Thus testosterone deficiency appears much more common in men of all ages when including a variety of ethnic groups. As low testosterone may play an early, causal role in the chronic disease process, continuous monitoring of testosterone levels through the life span may aid the early identification of chronic disease development or disease progression. Further research is needed on the independent and joint effects of low TT and muscular weakness. From a clinical perspective, this study affirms that low testosterone in men is a presenting risk factor for chronic disease and that chronic disease is commonly accompanied by low testosterone. It also highlights some unsettled aspects around reference ranges of testosterone
Abstract
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the association between total testosterone (TT) deficiency and weakness on multimorbidity in men. Analyses were performed to examine the prevalence of multimobidity among young, middle-aged, and older men, with and without testosterone deficiency. Multivariate logistic models were also used to determine the association between age-specific TT tertiles and multimorbidity, adjusting for key sociodemographic variables, as well as a secondary analysis adjusted for grip strength. Multimorbidity was more prevalent among men with testosterone deficiency, compared to normal TT in the entire group (36.6% vs 55.2%; p < 0.001); however, differences were only seen within young (testosterone deficiency: 36.4%; normal TT: 13.5%; p < 0.001) and older men (testosterone deficiency: 75.0%; normal TT: 61.5%; p < 0.001). Robust associations were found between the age-specific low-TT (OR: 2.87; 95%CI: 2.14-3.83) and moderate-TT (OR: 1.67; 95%CI: 1.27-2.20) tertiles (reference high-TT) and multimorbidity. Secondary analysis demonstrated that both low TT (OR: 1.82; 95%CI: 1.29-2.55) and moderate-TT (OR: 1.31; 95%CI: 1.01-1.69) were associated with multimorbidity, even after adjusting for obesity (OR: 1.75; 95%CI: 1.07-2.87) and NGS (OR: 1.21 per 0.05 unit lower NGS). Low TT and weakness in men were independently associated with multimorbidity at all ages; however, multimorbidity was more prevalent among young and older men with testosterone deficiency.

Side effects of hormonal treatments may encourage women to seek alternative therapies for menopausal symptoms. This systematic review aimed to determine the effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fats on symptoms such as depression and hot flushes, which are often associated with menopause. The studies on menopausal depression and hot flushes were inconclusive and often small. As a result, definitive recommendations regarding the use of omega-3 fats for the treatment of major depressive episodes and hot flushes in menopausal women was difficult. It was concluded that larger, higher quality studies on the use of Omega-3 for the management of symptoms of depression and hot flushing in menopausal women. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand that there may be a lack of research to support the use of omega-3 for the management of symptoms in menopausal women.
Abstract
Depression is one of the most important health problems worldwide. Women are 2.5 times more likely to experience major depression than men. Evidence suggests that some women might experience an increased risk for developing depression during “windows of vulnerability”, i.e., when exposed to intense hormone fluctuations, such as the menopause transition. Indeed, this period is associated with different symptoms, including vasomotor, depressive, and cognitive symptoms, which have all been shown to worsen as women approach menopause. Even though hormonal therapy represents the most effective treatment, side effects have been reported by several studies. Therefore, an increased number of women might prefer the use of alternative medicine for treating menopausal symptoms. N-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFAs) are included among these alternative treatments. We here provide a review of studies investigating the effects of n-3 LCPUFAs on hot flashes and depressive and cognitive disorders in menopausal women. The reported results are scattered and heterogeneous. In conclusion, a beneficial role of n-3 LCPUFAs in hot flashes, and depressive and cognitive symptoms related to menopausal transition is still far from conclusive.
