Diets high in poor quality carbohydrates and fats and low in fibre are believed to play an integral role in the formation of many different chronic diseases. Calorie restricted diets have previously shown to have health benefits, but these are stringent and hard to maintain. More recently low-carbohydrate diets have shown that they may be better tolerated. This randomised control trial aimed to compare a calorie restricted diet (MixD) with a calorie restricted moderate-carbohydrate diet (MCD) on indicators for chronic disease in 60 overweight and obese men over four weeks. The results showed that MCD resulted in significant loss of body fat without loss of muscle mass compared to MixD and significantly decreased markers for heart disease risk. It was concluded that the amount of body fat can be attributed to the amount and quality of carbohydrates consumed and that consumption of a MCD is more effective for weight loss without compromising muscle mass than a MixD. This study could be used by health professionals to recommend a MCD to middle aged obese men in order to lose body fat, retain muscle mass and reduce their risk of heart disease.
Abstract
Carbohydrate-restricted diets have become very popular due to their numerous health benefits. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of 4 weeks of a well-planned, low-energy moderate-carbohydrate diet (MCD) and a low-energy mixed diet (MixD) on the lipoprotein profile, glucose and C-reactive protein concentrations, body mass, and body composition in middle-aged males. Sixty middle-aged males were randomly assigned to the following groups: hypocaloric MCD (32% carbohydrates, 28% proteins, and 40% fat), hypocaloric MixD (50% carbohydrates, 20% proteins, and 30% fat), and a conventional (control) diet (CD; 48% carbohydrates, 15% proteins, and 37% fat). The participants who were classified into the MCD and MixD groups consumed 20% fewer calories daily than the total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). Baseline and postintervention fasting triacylglycerol (TG), LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol (LDL-C), HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol (HDL-C), total cholesterol (tCh), glucose (Gl), and C-reactive protein were evaluated. Body mass (BM) and body composition changes, including body fat (BF), % body fat (PBF), and muscle mass (MM), were monitored. Compared with MixD and CD, MCD significantly changed the fasting serum concentrations of TG (p < 0.05), HDL-C (p < 0.05), LDL-C (p < 0.05), tCh (p < 0.05), and glucose (p < 0.01). Additionally, body fat content (kg and %) was significantly reduced (p < 0.05) after MCD compared with MixD and CD. After the MixD intervention, BM and MM decreased (p < 0.05) compared with baseline values. Compared with baseline, after the MixD, BM, MM, tCh, LDL-C, and TG changed significantly. The 4 week low-energy MCD intervention changed lipoproteins, glucose, and body fat to a greater extent than the low-energy MixD. A hypocaloric MCD may be suggested for middle-aged male subjects who want to lose weight by reducing body fat content without compromising muscle mass.

Upon retirement, underground coal miners who previously expended a lot of energy in their work, do not change their eating habits, resulting in weight gain. Increasing moderate intensity physical activity and adjusting the diet may combat this. However, introduction at the same time may be difficult and demotivating for some individuals. This 12-week intervention study aimed to assess the effect of Nordic walking (NW) or a reduced calorie diet on 30 overweight and obese coal miners. The results showed that both low calorie diet and NW improved body measurements, however low-calorie diet was more successful. NW did improve indicators of lower cardiovascular disease risk compared to low-calorie diet, but this was not sustained. It was concluded that although both treatments were effective in improving body measurements and fats, calorie restriction was more effective. This study could be used by physicians to recommend a calorie restricted diet to overweight and obese individuals; however, the combined effect of diet and exercise should not be underestimated, and exercise should be considered after successful introduction of a modified diet.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Overweight and obesity after retirement are likely to be caused by unhealthy eating habits and the energy intake exceeding the energy expenditure. OBJECTIVES This study was designed to assess the effects of two 12-week interventions involving, respectively, either regular physical activity or a modified lower-calorie diet on the anthropometric parameters and blood lipid profiles in overweight and obese retired miners with lipid disorders. DESIGN The study participants (n = 30, aged 58.7 ± 4.1 years, body height 174.8 ± 7.3 cm, body weight 96.6 ± 13.9 kg) were randomly assigned to 2 intervention groups: the Nordic walking group (NW), which exercised with intensity from 60 to 70% of participants' maximal heart rates for 1 h 3 times a week, and the modified diet group (MD). Modification of the diet consisted of reducing the daily energy intake by 30%, increasing the dietary content of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids and dietary fiber, and reducing the proportion of saturated fatty acids. The variables assessed at baseline and after 6 and 12 weeks were: anthropometric parameters (body weight, fat mass content [FM], fat percentage [BF], BMI, waist circumference [WC], hip circumference [HC], and waist-to-hip ratio [WHR]) and blood lipid indicators (total cholesterol [TC], triglycerides [TG], low density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C], and high density lip-oprotein cholesterol [HDL-C]). RESULTS The body weight of the participants in the NW was lower at week 12 by an average of 5 kg, BMI by 6%, FB by 19%, FM by 15%, WC by 8%, HC by 6%, and WHR by 3%. In the MD, the respective decreases were 8 kg and 8, 25, 20, 6, 2, and 7%. In the MD, the postintervention concentrations of TC and TG were within the reference range. CONCLUSION Both 12-week interventions improved the anthropometric parameters and blood lipid profiles of retired heavy manual workers, with the improvements being more pronounced in the dieting group.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition linked to obesity and is characterised by high amounts of fat in the liver. This can lead to a high rate of mortality, but it can be improved by diet and exercise. It is unclear as to the best form of exercise for the improvement of NAFLD. This randomised control trial aimed to assess the effects of high-intensity interval exercise (HII) versus moderate-intensity exercise on liver fat content in 47 diabetic obese patients with NAFLD over 8 weeks. The results showed that regardless of exercise treatment, both improved measures of NAFLD and there were no differences between the two groups. Interestingly blood sugar control was also improved with both exercise treatments. It was concluded that both exercise regimes improved contributors to NAFLD, with no differences between the two treatments. This study would be useful to health professionals when recommending exercise to diabetic obese patients especially those with NAFLD, giving them the option of HII or MIC to improve their condition.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Some studies assessed the effect of aerobic exercise on diabetic obese patients with hepatic disease, while very limited studies compared high-intensity interval (HII) versus moderate-intensity continuous (MIC) on diabetic obese patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). OBJECTIVES This study was designed to assess the effects of HII versus MIC on intrahepatic triglycerides (IHTG) and visceral lipids in diabetic obese patients with NAFLD. DESIGN Randomized controlled trial. METHODS Forty-seven diabetic obese individuals with NAFLD were enrolled in this study. The individuals were randomly divided into 16 in HII group, 15 in MIC group, and 16 in the controls. HII group received HII exercise, MIC group received 8-week MIC exercise while the control group did not receive any exercise intervention. IHTG and visceral lipids were assessed pre- and post-intervention. RESULTS Baseline and clinical characteristics showed nonsignificant difference among the 3 groups (P > .05). Both HII and MIC groups showed a significant reduction in hepatic fat and visceral lipids (P < .05), while the controls showed nonsignificant difference (P > .05) after completing the study intervention. Postintervention analysis showed nonsignificant changes between the HII and MIC groups (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS Exercise training wither HII or MIC aerobic exercise reduces IHGT and visceral lipids in diabetic obese patients with NAFLD. No differences were observed between the effects of both exercise programs on diabetic obese patients with NAFLD.

Effective long-term weight loss strategies to reduce the risk of death and diseases associated with being obese or overweight are required, as restrictive programmes are difficult to sustain, and weight loss may be heavily influenced by behavioural factors. This randomised control trial of 101 premenopausal women with obesity or overweight aimed to compare a lower-fat and moderate-fat diets, both with nutrition education for 12 months. The results showed that both treatment groups lost weight. Both groups consumed the same amount of fat but increased their diet quality. Diet quality and greater attendance at nutritional education sessions were associated with greater weight loss. Cholesterol was significantly lower in both groups, but blood pressure remained unchanged. Interestingly there were a large number of women who did not complete the trial. It was concluded that irrespective of the amount of fat consumed, nutrition education can help to achieve sustained weight loss, improve diet quality and decrease heart disease risk for at least 12 months. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand that recommending fat-based targets for weight loss may be ineffective and the importance of emotional and behavioural support for individuals on a weight loss regime to improve their risk for heart disease.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare two energy-restricted, nutrient-dense diets at the upper or lower ends of the dietary fat recommendation range (lower fat [20% energy from fat] versus moderate fat [35%]) on weight loss using behavioral theory-based nutrition education. METHODS A total of 101 premenopausal women with overweight or obesity were randomized to an energy-restricted lower-fat or moderate-fat diet for 1 year. Interventions included 28 behavioral theory-based nutrition education sessions plus weekly exercise sessions. RESULTS Both treatment groups experienced weight loss (-5.0 kg for lower fat and -4.3 kg for moderate fat; P < 0.0001), but there was no difference in weight loss or fat intake between groups. Total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased (-3. 4 mg/dL and -3.8 mg/dL; P < 0.05), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased (1.9 mg/dL; P < 0.05) in both groups at 12 months. Diet quality, assessed by the Healthy Eating Index, increased significantly at 4 months versus baseline (70.8 [0.9] vs. 77.8 [1.0]) and was maintained through 12 months. Higher Healthy Eating Index scores were associated with greater weight loss at 4 months (r = -0.2; P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In the context of a well-resourced, free-living weight-loss intervention, total fat intake did not change; however, theory-based nutrition education underpinned by food-based recommendations resulted in caloric deficits, improvements in diet quality, and weight loss that was sustained for 1 year.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common complication of obesity and is associated with multiorgan insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia and an increased risk of diabetes and coronary heart disease. The aims of this study were to (a) determine hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL) [the liver’s biochemical process of synthesising fatty acids] in 3 distinct cohorts, (b) determine the relationships among hepatic DNL and intrahepatic [within the liver] triglyceride (IHTG) content, and (c) determine the effect of moderate (10%) weight loss. This study is a cross-sectional study which included a total of 67 men and women (mean age: 39 ± 1 years; 14 men and 53 women). Results highlight the importance of DNL in the pathogenesis of hepatic steatosis [build up of fats in the liver] and suggest that increases in daily 24-hour plasma glucose and insulin concentrations are major drivers of increased DNL in individuals with obesity and NAFLD. Additionally, moderate (10%) weight loss caused a marked decrease in both hepatic DNL and IHTG content. Authors conclude that increases in circulating glucose and insulin promote hepatic DNL in individuals with NAFLD. Whereas an improvement in insulin sensitivity and a decrease in hepatic DNL, are potentially important contributors to the decline in IHTG content associated with moderate weight loss.
Abstract
BACKGROUNDAn increase in intrahepatic triglyceride (IHTG) is the hallmark feature of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and is decreased by weight loss. Hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL) contributes to steatosis in individuals with NAFLD. The physiological factors that stimulate hepatic DNL and the effect of weight loss on hepatic DNL are not clear.METHODSHepatic DNL, 24-hour integrated plasma insulin and glucose concentrations, and both liver and whole-body insulin sensitivity were determined in individuals who were lean (n = 14), obese with normal IHTG content (n = 26), or obese with NAFLD (n = 27). Hepatic DNL was assessed using the deuterated water method corrected for the potential confounding contribution of adipose tissue DNL. Liver and whole-body insulin sensitivity was assessed using the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp procedure in conjunction with glucose tracer infusion. Six subjects in the obese-NAFLD group were also evaluated before and after a diet-induced weight loss of 10%.RESULTSThe contribution of hepatic DNL to IHTG-palmitate was 11%, 19%, and 38% in the lean, obese, and obese-NAFLD groups, respectively. Hepatic DNL was inversely correlated with hepatic and whole-body insulin sensitivity, but directly correlated with 24-hour plasma glucose and insulin concentrations. Weight loss decreased IHTG content, in conjunction with a decrease in hepatic DNL and 24-hour plasma glucose and insulin concentrations.CONCLUSIONSThese data suggest hepatic DNL is an important regulator of IHTG content and that increases in circulating glucose and insulin stimulate hepatic DNL in individuals with NAFLD. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential causal relationship between alcohol consumption and 8 CVDs. A secondary aim was to explore the associations of genetically predicted alcohol consumption with possible mediators and confounders of the alcohol-CVD associations. This study is a mendelian randomization study [an epidemiological technique that utilizes genetic variants that are reliably associated with a potentially modifiable risk factor to determine its causal role for disease risk]. Results indicate that higher alcohol consumption may be associated with increased risk of stroke and peripheral artery disease. Furthermore, alcohol consumption was also associated with higher blood pressure and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and with lower triglyceride levels.
Abstract
BACKGROUND The causal role of alcohol consumption for cardiovascular disease remains unclear. We used Mendelian randomization (MR) to predict the effect of alcohol consumption on 8 cardiovascular diseases. METHODS Up to 94 single-nucleotide polymorphisms were used as instrumental variables for alcohol consumption. Genetic association estimates for cardiovascular diseases were obtained from large-scale consortia and UK Biobank. Analyses were conducted using the inverse variance-weighted, weighted median, MR-PRESSO, MR-Egger, and multivariable MR methods. RESULTS Genetically predicted alcohol consumption was consistently associated with stroke and peripheral artery disease across the different analyses. The odds ratios (ORs) per 1-SD increase of log-transformed alcoholic drinks per week were 1.27 ([95% CI, 1.12-1.45] P=2.87×10-4) for stroke and 3.05 ([95% CI, 1.92-4.85] P=2.30×10-6) for peripheral artery disease in the inverse variance-weighted analysis. There was some evidence for positive associations of genetically predicted alcohol consumption with coronary artery disease (OR, 1.16 [95% CI, 1.00-1.36]; P=0.052), atrial fibrillation (OR, 1.17 [95% CI, 1.00-1.37]; P=0.050), and abdominal aortic aneurysm (OR, 2.60 [95% CI, 1.15-5.89]; P=0.022) in the inverse variance-weighted analysis. These associations were somewhat attenuated in multivariable MR analysis adjusted for smoking initiation. There was no evidence of associations of genetically predicted alcohol consumption with heart failure (OR, 1.00 [95% CI, 0.68-1.47]; P=0.996), venous thromboembolism (OR, 1.04 [95% CI, 0.77-1.39]; P=0.810), and aortic valve stenosis (OR, 1.03 [95% CI, 0.56-1.90]; P=0.926). CONCLUSIONS This study provides evidence of a causal relationship between higher alcohol consumption and increased risk of stroke and peripheral artery disease. The causal role of alcohol consumption for other cardiovascular diseases requires further research.

The increased addition of ultra-processed ingredients to the food of children and adolescents is related to dislipidemia. This is where there are abnormal levels of fats in the blood. This study is a systemic review on the link between consumption of ultra-processed foods and the blood lipid profiles of children and adolescents. 14 studies were included. 9 showed that consuming ultra-processed food is related to increased LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides and a reduction in HDL cholesterol. 3 studies found no relationship and 2 studies demonstrated an improved lipid profile with an increased intake of ready-to-eat cereals. Overall, where there was a high consumption of ultra-processed foods, there was a harmful effect on the blood lipid profiles among children and adolescents. Further studies are needed and interventions such as nutritional education must be considered to reducing the intake of these ultra-processed foods.
Abstract
The increase in the input of ultra-processed ingredients in the food of children and adolescents is related to the development of noncommunicable diseases such as dyslipidemia. The scope of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the relationship of consumption of ultra-processed foods in the lipid profile of children and adolescents. A search in the PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane and LILACS databases was carried out to locate cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, with or without intervention, in apparently healthy children and/or adolescents, who had the intake of ultra-processed food as an exposure variable and the lipid profile as an outcome. After screening, 14 studies were included, of which nine demonstrated that ultra-processed food consumption was related to increased LDL-c, total cholesterol, triglycerides and a reduction in HDL-c. Three studies found no relationship and two demonstrated that the increased intake of ready-to-eat cereals was related to the decrease in total cholesterol and LDL-c. There was a high consumption of ultra-processed foods and positive relation with blood lipids among children and adolescents, which calls attention to interventions, such as nutritional education, with a view to reducing the intake of these foods. O aumento da participação de alimentos ultraprocessados na alimentação de crianças e adolescentes está relacionado ao desenvolvimento de agravos não transmissíveis, como dislipidemia. Objetivou-se realizar uma revisão sistemática da literatura sobre a relação do consumo de alimentos ultraprocessados e o perfil lipídico de crianças e adolescentes. Realizou-se uma busca nas bases de dados PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane e LILACS por estudos com desenhos transversais e longitudinais, com ou sem intervenção; em crianças e/ou adolescentes aparentemente saudáveis, que tivessem a ingestão de alimento ultraprocessado como variável de exposição e o perfil lipídico como desfecho. Após triagem, 14 estudos foram incluídos, destes, nove demonstraram que o consumo de ultraprocessados estava relacionado com o aumento do LDL-c, colesterol total, triglicerídeos e diminuição do HDL-c. Três estudos não encontraram nenhuma relação e dois demonstraram que a maior ingestão de cereais prontos estava relacionada com a diminuição de colesterol total e LDL-c. Observou-se elevado consumo de alimentos ultraprocessados e relação positiva com lipídios sanguíneos em crianças e adolescentes o que chama atenção para a realização de intervenções, como educação nutricional, com vistas a reduzir a ingestão desses alimentos.

A plant-based diet (PBD) has been shown to benefit cardiovascular health. However previous research has reported incidences of gout, questioning its safety in certain individuals. Previous studies have mainly focused on the outcomes of short-term changes to a PBD. This study aimed to determine the effects of a whole- food PBD (WFPBD) on cardiovascular health in the short, medium and long-terms. This cross-sectional study split 151 healthy adults depending on how long they had followed a PBD. The results showed that regardless of the amount of time on a WFPBD, markers for cardiovascular health are improved. Long-term PBD (5-10 years) in women was associated with significantly lower LDL-cholesterol, which is a cholesterol that can increase heart attack risk. Significant improvements to blood pressure were also observed in women but again this was not time dependent. Indicators of gout development were not significant, although they were raised in a small number of participants. It was concluded that regardless of time, a WFPBD may be associated with long-term cardiovascular health. This study could be used by practitioners to recommend a WFPBD to healthy individuals who would like to reduce their cardiovascular risk. However, caution should be taken in individuals with gout.
Abstract
An effective lifestyle strategy to reduce cardiovascular diseases risk (CVD) factors is needed. We examined the effects of a whole-food plant-based (WFPB) lifestyle program on dietary intake and cardiovascular (CV) risk factors in 151 adults (mean 39.6 (SD 12.5) years). Adherence was categorised into short-, medium- and long-term (years: (0.5-<2), (2-<5) and (5-10)), for both genders separately. Dietary intakes were assessed, fasting blood lipids and blood pressure (BP) were measured, and % participants reaching guideline recommended targets for LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and BP in the primary CVD prevention was assessed. There were no statistically significant differences in intakes of energy and most nutrients among participants (both genders), that were short-, medium- and long term in our program. Diet was mainly composed of unprocessed vegetables/fruits, whole grains, legumes, potatoes, and nuts/seeds. LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, systolic and diastolic BP were within targets for: 93%, 97%, 88% and 95% participants, respectively. In females (vs. males), total- and HDL-cholesterol were higher (mean): 3.8 (SD 0.7) vs. 3.4 (SD 0.9), p = 0.002 and 1.5 (SD 0.3) vs. 1.1 (SD 0.2) mmol/L, p < 0.001), systolic BP was lower (113 (SD 11) vs. 120 (SD 10) mmHg, p = 0.001), while there was no difference in diastolic BP (71 (SD 9) vs. 72 (SD 8) mmHg, p = 0.143). More females vs. males reached target triglycerides (99% vs. 91%, p = 0.021) and systolic BP (92% vs. 79%, p = 0.046), while similar females and males reached target LDL-cholesterol (94% vs. 91%, p = 0.500) and diastolic BP (93% vs. 100%, p = 0.107). Participation in our WFPB lifestyle program is associated with favourable dietary intakes, safety markers, and CV risk factor profiles.

Psoriasis is as an immune-mediated, inflammatory dermatological disease characterized by a chronic-relapsing course and associated with multifactorial inheritance. The elevation of inflammatory markers is characteristic in peripheral blood of patients with psoriasis. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy and safety of a probiotic mixture in the reduction of psoriasis severity. This study is a double-blind, randomised (1:1) placebo-controlled trial. Ninety patients were recruited, evaluated by 3 dermatologists and randomly assigned to one of the two trial arms (probiotics or control). Results show: - a beneficial effect of the probiotic blend, in reducing the severity of psoriasis when administered as coadjutant therapy together with topical corticosteroid. - the efficacy of the probiotic in modulation of the composition of the microbiota. - that patients previously treated with the probiotic mixture have a lower risk of relapse than those who previously received placebo. Authors conclude that more studies are required with the inclusion of patients younger than 18 years, the use of different doses of probiotics, different durations of probiotic administration and different strains, for comparison with the current results.
Abstract
The aim of this 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was to determine the efficacy and safety of a probiotic mixture in the reduction of psoriasis severity. Ninety 18-70-year-old adults with plaque psoriasis were randomized into probiotic and placebo groups. At 12-week follow-up, 66.7% of patients in the probiotic group and 41.9% in the placebo group showed a reduction in Psoriasis Area and Severity Index of up to 75% (p < 0.05). A clinically relevant difference was observed in Physician Global Assessment index: 48.9% in the probiotic group achieved a score of 0 or 1, compared with 30.2% in the placebo group. The results of follow-up 6 months after the end of the study showed a lower risk of relapse after the intake of the probiotic mixture. Analysis of gut microbiota confirmed the efficacy of the probiotic in modulation of the microbiota composition.

Cardiovascular disease generally refers to the narrowing or blockage of the arteries of the heart, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke and is the major cause of death in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Identifying individuals with type 2 diabetes who are at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease could ensure better management of these patients. This retrospective observational study of 3524 individuals with type 2 diabetes aimed to investigate if the amount of sugar found in the blood over the last few months, known as haemaglobin A1c (HbA1c) can predict cardiovascular disease in individuals with type 2 diabetes. In addition, the study looked at the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and its relationship to cardiovascular disease outcomes. The results showed that several factors were associated with cardiovascular disease, however of main note was that the TyG index and the amount of sugar in the blood following a fast were associated with increased cardiovascular events in individuals with type 2 diabetes, but HbA1c was not. It was concluded that TyG and the blood sugar level could be used to allow early identification and management of type 2 diabetics to prevent cardiovascular events. Clinicians could use this study to justify the use of measuring the TyG index and blood sugar levels as a predictor for cardiovascular events to ensure that patients are managed not only for type 2 diabetes but also to reduce their risk of cardiovascular events in the future.
Abstract
The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has been correlated with insulin resistance. We aim to investigate the role of the TyG index on cardiovascular (CV) events in type 2 diabetes mellitus and compare the roles of fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and the TyG index in predicting CV events. This retrospective study enrolled 3524 patients with type 2 diabetes from the Kaohsiung Medical University Research Database in 2009 in this longitudinal study and followed them until 2015. The TyG index was calculated as log (fasting triglyceride level (mg/dL) × fasting glucose level (mg/dL)/2). CV events included myocardial infarction, unstable angina, stroke, hospitalization for coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and CV-related death. The association between variables and CV events was assessed using a multivariable stepwise Cox proportional hazard analysis. Two hundred and fifteen CV events (6.1%) were recorded during a follow-up period of 5.93 years. The multivariable stepwise analysis showed that high fasting glucose (HR, 1.007; p < 0.001) and a high TyG index (HR, 1.521; p = 0.004) but not hemoglobin A1c or triglycerides were associated with a higher rate of CV events. Adding fasting glucose and the TyG index to the basic model improved the predictive ability of progression to a CV event (p < 0.001 and p = 0.018, respectively), over that of hemoglobin A1c (p = 0.084) and triglyceride (p = 0.221). Fasting glucose and the TyG index are useful parameters and stronger predictive factors than hemoglobin A1c and triglyceride for CV events and may offer an additional prognostic benefit in patients with type 2 diabetes.
