The relationships between macronutrient and micronutrient intakes and type 2 diabetes mellitus in South Asians: A review.

Abstract
BACKGROUND South Asians (SA) have increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The role of nutrient intakes in T2DM in SA is not well understood, however. OBJECTIVE The paper reviewed the relationship between macronutrient and micronutrients intakes and T2DM in SA. METHODS The MEDLINE database was searched for relevant papers on this topic in SA. RESULTS There was some evidence that dietary fiber and linoleic acid intake may reduce but carbohydrates may increase the risk of T2DM. Some studies found higher energy from protein and fat in subjects with T2DM versus controls. Other studies, however, found lower carbohydrate intake among those with T2DM or no relationship between diet composition and T2DM. Several vitamins and minerals were also inversely related to T2DM. CONCLUSIONS The data were limited to a few epidemiological studies. Most studies did not distinguish between undiagnosed and known T2DM. Subjects with known T2DM are more likely to have changed their diet. Prospective cohort or randomized controlled studies examining the role of diet composition, using precise image-assisted dietary assessment method and blood biomarkers, in the development of T2DM among migrant and native SA are needed. Lastly, a more complete nutrient database for foods consumed by SA is needed.

Novel FBN1 Heterozygous Mutations Identified in Chinese Families with Marfan Syndrome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To detect the mutations in the fibronectin-1 gene (FBN1) of four Chinese families with autosomal dominant Marfan syndrome (MFS), and to discuss the associated phenotypes. METHODS We examined ten patients, and five non-carriers, in four Chinese families with autosomal dominant Marfan syndrome (MFS) for FBN1 mutations. Comprehensive physical, ophthalmic, and cardiovascular examinations were performed on the family members. The FBN1 gene was amplified with PCR from the DNA of the patients and their relatives. The amplified products were sequenced and compared with a reference sequence from the GenBank database. The changes in the structure and function of the protein caused by the amino acid substitution were investigated with a bioinformatics analysis. RESULTS In our study, sequencing FBN1 revealed three novel mutations, and one mutation which was found earlier in 2012. One of the novel mutations is c.649T>C in exon 7, which results in the substitution tryptophan by arginine at codon 217 (p.Trp217Arg), the other is a splice defect in intron 39 (c.4816+1G>A), and the third one is c.407G>T in exon 5, which altered an amino acid at residue 136 from Cysteine to Phenylalanine (p.Cys136Phe). The recurrent mutation was c.4151T>C in exon 34, resulting in methionine being replaced by threonine (p.Met1384Thr). The occurrence of the mutations correlated strongly with the phenotypes of the patients, and no mutation was detected in the normal relatives of the affected patients. CONCLUSIONS In this study, three novel and a recurrent FBN1 mutations were detected. The results expand the mutation spectrum of FBN1, helping in the study of molecular pathogenesis of MFS and Marfan-related disorders.

Abstract
To investigate the major causes and predictive factors of death in a middle-aged and elderly Chinese population. A total of 6591 residents aged ≥ 45 years from Shanghai Changfeng community were followed up for an average of 5.4 years. The causes of death were coded according to the 10th Revision of International Classification of Diseases. The mortality rate was calculated by person-years of follow up and age-standardized according to the 2010 Chinese census data. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards model was performed to investigate the predictors of all-cause and cause-specific mortality. During the total follow-up of 35,739 person-years, 370 deaths were documented (157 from malignant neoplasms, 70 from heart diseases, 68 from cerebrovascular diseases, 75 from other causes). The age-standardized all-cause mortality rate was 798.2 per 100,000 person-years (927.9 among men and 716.7 among women). Results from multivariable analyses showed that aging, diabetes, and osteoporosis at baseline were independent predictors of all-cause mortality, with hazard ratios (HR) of 1.11 (95% CI 1.10-1.13), 1.91 (1.51-2.42), and 1.71 (1.24-2.35), respectively. The population attributable risk percent of diabetes and osteoporosis was 19.7% and 11.7%, respectively. Cigarette smoking was associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality in men (HR and 95%CI 1.44, 1.01-2.06). In women, diabetes and osteoporosis were related to a higher risk of cardiovascular mortality (3.27, 1.82-5.88 and 1.89, 1.04-3.46, respectively). While in men, osteoporosis was related to a higher risk of malignant neoplasms mortality (2.39, 1.07-5.33). Malignant neoplasms, heart diseases, and cerebrovascular diseases are the leading causes of death. Aging, smoking, underweight, diabetes, and osteoporosis are independent predictors of premature death among middle-aged and elderly Chinese community population. Moreover, there may have been some differences in the causes and predictors of premature death between men and women.

Abstract
Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in protein-coding regions of genes which were previously reported to be associated with nonsyndromic cleft lip, with or without palate involvement (NSCL/P), were investigated. Twelve candidate loci [platelet-derived growth factor C (PDGFC), platelet-derived growth factor subunit A (PDGFA), platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRA), glycine receptor alpha 2 (GLRA2), glycine receptor beta (GLRB), ATP binding cassette subfamily A member 4 (ABCA4), MAF bZIP transcription factor B (MAFB), interferon regulatory factor 6 (IRF6), CCDC26 long non-coding RNA (CCDC26), paired box 7 (PAX7), ventral anterior homeobox 1 (VAX1), and netrin 1 (NTN1)] covering 1.5 Mbp were sequenced in 136 NSCL/P patients and 54 healthy controls. Twenty-five genomic variants identified were further validated in another 400 NSCL/P and 200 controls. Two SNPs in IRF6 showed a protective effect against the development of NSCL/P (rs12405750, OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.41-0.69; and rs2235371, OR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.43-0.71). The missense variant, rs2235371, alters the conserved amino acid valine to isoleucine at codon 274 (V274I). We observed that SNPs at IRF6 (rs2235371 and rs12405750) and GLRB (rs73856838 and rs72685584) show consistent interaction effects. The association between the missense SNP rs2235371 in gene IRF6 and NSCL/P suggests that this SNP may play an important role as a risk factor for NSCL/P in the Han Chinese populations. The marginal signal near 4q31 detected in previous genome-wide association studies might be caused by an interaction between the IRF6 and GLRB genes. This interaction needs to be further validated by experimentation in follow-up studies.

Association of maternal iron deficiency anemia with the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: a meta-analysis.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study was to conduct a meta-analysis investigating the association of maternal iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS Literature search was conducted in various database websites such as PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science up to 17 June 2018 for related publications written in English. Selected data were extracted from the included studies and were subjected to statistical analysis. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed, pooled, and interpreted. Subgroup analysis by ethnicity (Asians vs. Caucasians) was also performed. RESULTS Six studies with a total sample size of 15,157 from various countries were included in this meta-analysis. Pooled ORs of all publications included show that pregnant women with IDA have a reduced risk of developing GDM (OR 0.61; 95% CI 0.47-0.80; PA = 0.0003). Subgroup analysis, on the other hand, showed significant associations among Asians (OR 0.60; 95% CI 0.45-0.79; PA = 0.0003) than Caucasians (OR 0.76; 95% CI 0.32-1.76; PA = 0.52). CONCLUSION Results of this meta-analysis suggests that pregnant women with IDA are 39% less likely to develop GDM. However, more studies are needed to confirm the claims of our results.

Cultural Moderation of Unconscious Hedonic Responses to Food.

Abstract
Previous psychological studies have shown that images of food elicit hedonic responses, either consciously or unconsciously, and that participants' cultural experiences moderate conscious hedonic ratings of food. However, whether cultural factors moderate unconscious hedonic responses to food remains unknown. We investigated this issue in Polish and Japanese participants using the subliminal affective priming paradigm. Images of international fast food and domestic Japanese food were presented subliminally as prime stimuli. Participants rated their preferences for the subsequently presented target ideographs. Participants also rated their preferences for supraliminally presented food images. In the subliminal rating task, Polish participants showed higher preference ratings for fast food primes than for Japanese food primes, whereas Japanese participants showed comparable preference ratings across these two conditions. In the supraliminal rating task, both Polish and Japanese participants reported comparable preferences for fast and Japanese food stimuli. These results suggest that cultural experiences moderate unconscious hedonic responses to food, which may not be detected based on explicit ratings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acupuncture is effective for reducing body weight; however, evidence in Asian populations is lacking. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture for body weight reduction in Asians. METHODS The Medline, Embase, Cochrane library, and Chinese databases were searched for relevant studies through October 20, 2018. Publications describing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing acupuncture with other treatments for the reduction of body weight were compiled. Reviewers assessed bias and collected data on trial characteristics and outcomes. The study was conducted based on the reporting items of the guidelines for systematic evaluation and meta-analysis (PRISMA). Review Manager 5.2 software was used to calculate weight mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Twelve RCTs involving 1151 subjects were included. Compared with the control groups, the acupuncture groups exhibited significantly greater reductions of body mass index (BMI)(WMD -1.20kg/m2; 95% CI -1.91, -0.48)and waist circumference (WMD -1.85 cm; 95% CI -3.20, -0.49) In the subgroup analyses, significant differences in the reduction of BMI was observed between the acupuncture and sham acupuncture groups, the acupuncture plus diet and exercise, and the diet and exercise groups, and the acupuncture and no intervention groups, but not between the acupuncture plus exercise and exercise groups [corrected]. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrates that acupuncture is effective in the intervention of overweight/obesity in Asians; however, compared with exercise alone, acupuncture combined with exercise had no effect on the BMI or waist circumstance in the short term. Long-term studies are needed to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture in weight reduction in Asians.

Associations between twelve common gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to hepatocellular carcinoma: evidence from a meta-analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Associations between polymorphisms in vitamin D receptor (VDR)/vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)/interleukin-18 (IL-18)/mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and susceptibility to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were already explored by many studies, yet the results of these studies were inconsistent. The aim of this meta-analysis was to better clarify associations between polymorphisms in VDR/VEGF/IL-18/MBL and HCC by combing the results of all relevant studies. METHODS Eligible publications were searched from PubMed, Embase, WOS, and CNKI. We used Review Manager to combine the results of individual studies. RESULTS Thirty studies were included in this study. Combined results revealed that VDR rs7975232, VDR rs2228570, VEGF rs699947, VEGF rs3025039, IL-18 rs1946518, and MBL rs7096206 polymorphisms were all significantly associated with HCC in the overall pooled population. We also obtained similar significant associations for VDR rs7975232, VDR rs2228570, IL-18 rs1946518, and MBL rs7096206 polymorphisms in Asians. CONCLUSIONS Collectively, this meta-analysis proved that VDR rs7975232, VDR rs2228570, VEGF rs699947, VEGF rs3025039, IL-18 rs1946518, and MBL rs7096206 polymorphisms may confer susceptibility to HCC in certain populations.

The impact on glycemic control through progressive resistance training with bioDensityTM in Chinese elderly patients with type 2 diabetes: The PReTTy2 (Progressive Resistance Training in Type 2 Diabetes) Trial.

Abstract
AIMS: To evaluate the effects of a novel, low-volume, high-intensity Progressive Resistance Training (PRT) technique on blood glucose control in elderly Chinese patients with Type 2 Diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS The PReTTy2 trial enrolled 300 male and female patients with Type 2 Diabetes in a randomized resistance training program with the bioDensity™ technique. 100 were control patients with no training intervention and 200 had resistance training. Anthropometry, biochemical parameters, HbA1c and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) were measured at baseline, 3-month and 6-month intervals. RESULTS 265 patients completed the study with no adverse events. There were no statistically significant differences in HbA1c for all patients, control and PRT groups, at baseline (p = 0.60), 3 months (p = 0.42) and 6-months (p = 0.45). Subgroup analysis with baseline HbA1c > 7.5% (58 mmol/mol), showed statistically significant differences in HbA1c and FPG between groups at 6 months (p < 0.05). All PRT group patients had statistically significant differences from baseline at 6 months for HDL (1.25 + 0.32 vs. 1.17 + 0.26 mmol/L, p < 0.001), LDL (3.23 ± 0.89 vs. 2.93 ± 0.80 mmol/L, p < 0.001) and total cholesterol (4.97 ± 1.22 vs. 4.58 ± 1.03 mmol/L, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS PRT improves glycemic indices in elderly patients with Type 2 Diabetes with poor glucose control as an adjunct to diet and medication. Progressive Resistance Training with bioDensity™ is feasible, safe and effective in elderly patients with Type 2 Diabetes.
