Abstract
Obesity is a major worldwide health threat. It is characterized by an abnormal adipose tissue overgrowth together with increased monocytes infiltration, causing inflammation and oxidative stress, events associated with several illnesses. Investigations have focused on the benefits of native fruit consumption, claiming these to be natural sources of bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics. It has been widely stated that berries are a source of the most antioxidant compounds, and, thus, seem highly promising to endure research efforts on these vegetal matrices. The present article describes botanical, chemical and biomedical features of the Chilean native berries, Aristotelia chilensis, Ugni molinae, and Berberis microphylla. This work aims to potentiate incoming research focused on the search for novel treatments for first-order diseases with these particular plant sources.

Transcutaneous carbon dioxide measurements in fruits, vegetables and humans: A prospective observational study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transcutaneous carbon dioxide measurement (TcCO2) is frequently used as a surrogate for arterial blood gas sampling in adults and children with critical illness. Data from noninvasive TcCO2 monitoring assists with clinical decisions regarding mechanical ventilation settings, estimation of metabolic consumption and determination of adequate end-organ tissue perfusion. OBJECTIVES To report TcCO2 values obtained from various fruits, vegetables and elite critical care medicine specialists. DESIGN Prospective, observational, nonblinded cohort study. SETTINGS Single-centre, tertiary paediatric referral centre and organic farmers' market. PARTICIPANTS Vegetables and fruits included 10 samples of each of the following: red delicious apple (Malus domestica), manzano banana (Musa sapientum), key lime (Citrus aurantiifolia), miniature sweet bell pepper (Capsicum annuum), sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) and avocado (Persea americana). Ten human controls were studied including a paediatric intensivist, a paediatric inpatient hospital physician, four paediatric resident physicians and four paediatric critical care nurses. INTERVENTIONS None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES TcCO2 values for each species and device response times. RESULTS TcCO2 readings were measurable in all study species except the sweet potato. Mean ± SD values of TcCO2 for human controls [4.34 ± 0.37 kPa (32.6 ± 2.8 mmHg)] were greater than apples [3.09 ± 0.19 kPa (23.2 ± 1.4 mmHg), P < 0.01], bananas [2.73 ± 0.28 kPa (20.5 ± 2.1 mmHg), P < 0.01] and limes [2.76 ± 0.52 kPa (20.7 ± 3.9 mmHg), P < 0.01] but no different to those of avocados [4.29 ± 0.44 kPa (32.2 ± 3.3 mmHg), P = 0.77] and bell peppers [4.19 ± 1.13 kPa (31.4 ± 8.5 mmHg), P = 0.68]. Transcutaneous response times did not differ between research cohorts and human controls. CONCLUSION We found nonroot, nontuberous vegetables to have TcCO2 values similar to that of healthy, human controls. Fruits yield TcCO2 readings, but substantially lower than human controls.

Abstract
Fungal diseases result in significant losses of fruits and vegetables during handling, transportation and storage. At present, post-production fungal spoilage is predominantly controlled by using synthetic fungicides. Under the global climate change scenario and with the need for sustainable agriculture, biological control methods of fungal diseases, using antagonistic microorganisms, are emerging as ecofriendly alternatives to the use of fungicides. The potential of microbial antagonists, isolated from a diversity of natural habitats, for postharvest disease suppression has been investigated. Postharvest biocontrol systems involve tripartite interaction between microbial antagonists, the pathogen and the host, affected by environmental conditions. Several modes for fungistatic activities of microbial antagonists have been suggested, including competition for nutrients and space, mycoparasitism, secretion of antifungal antibiotics and volatile metabolites and induction of host resistance. Postharvest application of microbial antagonists is more successful for efficient disease control in comparison to pre-harvest application. Attempts have also been made to improve the overall efficacy of antagonists by combining them with different physical and chemical substances and methods. Globally, many microbe-based biocontrol products have been developed and registered for commercial use. The present review provides a brief overview on the use of microbial antagonists as postharvest biocontrol agents and summarises information on their isolation, mechanisms of action, application methods, efficacy enhancement, product formulation and commercialisation.

Environmental sustainability of fruit and vegetable production supply chains in the face of climate change: A review.

Abstract
This study discusses importance of assessing environmental sustainability of fruits and vegetable (F&V) production sector in future climate change (CC) scenarios. For the current production scenario, life cycle environmental footprints of F&V supply chain are discussed considering the influences of: agro-climates, production systems, raw material inputs, post-harvest managements to the products' yield and quality. Potential risks of CC to the sector are discussed in the context of elevated global temperature and carbon dioxide level, ozone depletion and changes in precipitation patterns. Potential risks due to CC are on the productivity and the quality of F&V products, such as texture, color, maturity and nutrients. Increased risk of failure of the current crop protection strategies, e.g. due to pest infestations and different crop-water and nutrient stresses are among the short and long-term risks. It also discusses potential adaptation and mitigation measures to CC, and therefrom argues on the related environmental consequences in the supply chain. From the LCA studies, it was revealed that environmental impacts of F&V supply chain varied as per agro-ecological characteristics and farming systems, e.g. greenhouse vs open-field, organic vs conventional, and grown in different agro-climatic conditions. The nexus among the climatic stresses, potential adaptation and mitigation measures, hence were in the form of potential changes in the raw material inputs and resource flows depending on the preferred future agro-management strategies and farming practices. Adaptation and other management options, included are, changes in: crop calendar, nutrient and pest management strategies, post-harvest handling and improved preservation of F&V products. These are argued eventually being determining factors leading to different environmental footprints compared to the existing management scenarios. Prospective life cycle environmental evaluation of F&V supply chain considering the relationship among product yield and qualities, CC stresses and potential adaptation and mitigation measures is thus a new thrust and direction.

Contribution of Berry Polyphenols to the Human Metabolome.

Abstract
Diets rich in berries provide health benefits, however, the contribution of berry phytochemicals to the human metabolome is largely unknown. The present study aimed to establish the impact of berry phytochemicals on the human metabolome. A "systematic review strategy" was utilized to characterize the phytochemical composition of the berries most commonly consumed in the USA; (poly)phenols, primarily anthocyanins, comprised the majority of reported plant secondary metabolites. A reference standard library and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) quantitative metabolomics methodology were developed and applied to serum/plasma samples from a blueberry and a strawberry intervention, revealing a diversity of benzoic, cinnamic, phenylacetic, 3-(phenyl)propanoic and hippuric acids, and benzyldehydes. 3-Phenylpropanoic, 2-hydroxybenzoic, and hippuric acid were highly abundant (mean > 1 µM). Few metabolites at concentrations above 100 nM changed significantly in either intervention. Significant intervention effects (P < 0.05) were observed for plasma/serum 2-hydroxybenzoic acid and hippuric acid in the blueberry intervention, and for 3-methoxyphenylacetic acid and 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid in the strawberry intervention. However, significant within-group effects for change from baseline were prevalent, suggesting that high inter-individual variability precluded significant treatment effects. Berry consumption in general appears to cause a fluctuation in the pools of small molecule metabolites already present at baseline, rather than the appearance of unique berry-derived metabolites, which likely reflects the ubiquitous nature of (poly)phenols in the background diet.

Phenylpropanoid derivatives from the fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge and their distinctive effects on human hepatoma cells.

Abstract
Ten undescribed phenylpropanoid derivatives including four pairs of enantiomers and two 8-9' linked neolignans, together with fifteen known ones were isolated from the fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge. Their structures were established by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses. Enantiomers were separated successfully by chiral chromatographic column and their absolute configurations were determined by comparison of the experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. The in vitro cytotoxicity of the isolates were evaluated against two human hepatocellular carcinoma, HepG2 and Hep3B cells. Among them, (±)-crataegusanoid A, (±)-crataegusanoid B and crataegusanoid F exhibited moderate cytotoxicity. Interestingly, the different absolute configurations of (±)-crataegusanoid A and B demonstrated enantioselective cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells. Further flow cytometry analysis indicated that both (-)-crataegusanoid A and (-)-crataegusanoid B performed more significant effects on cell apoptosis, autophagy, and cell cycle progression compared with their enantiomers (+)-crataegusanoid A and (+)-crataegusanoid B. In addition, the results revealed that these two pairs of enantiomers induced protective autophagy in HepG2 cells.

Genomic, Morphological and Biological Traits of the Viruses Infecting Major Fruit Trees.

Abstract
Banana trees, citrus fruit trees, pome fruit trees, grapevines, mango trees, and stone fruit trees are major fruit trees cultured worldwide and correspond to nearly 90% of the global production of woody fruit trees. In light of the above, the present manuscript summarizes the viruses that infect the major fruit trees, including their taxonomy and morphology, and highlights selected viruses that significantly affect fruit production, including their genomic and biological features. The results showed that a total of 163 viruses, belonging to 45 genera classified into 23 families have been reported to infect the major woody fruit trees. It is clear that there is higher accumulation of viruses in grapevine (80/163) compared to the other fruit trees (each corresponding to less than 35/163), while only one virus species has been reported infecting mango. Most of the viruses (over 70%) infecting woody fruit trees are positive-sense single-stranded RNA (+ssRNA), and the remainder belong to the -ssRNA, ssRNA-RT, dsRNA, ssDNA and dsDNA-RT groups (each corresponding to less than 8%). Most of the viruses are icosahedral or isometric (79/163), and their diameter ranges from 16 to 80 nm with the majority being 25-30 nm. Cross-infection has occurred in a high frequency among pome and stone fruit trees, whereas no or little cross-infection has occurred among banana, citrus and grapevine. The viruses infecting woody fruit trees are mostly transmitted by vegetative propagation, grafting, and root grafting in orchards and are usually vectored by mealybug, soft scale, aphids, mites or thrips. These viruses cause adverse effects in their fruit tree hosts, inducing a wide range of symptoms and significant damage, such as reduced yield, quality, vigor and longevity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aronia melanocarpa is a rich source of (poly)phenols. Previous research has demonstrated that these berries may provide cardiovascular health benefits in high-risk populations. However, very few studies have investigated the effects of daily consumption of dietary achievable amounts of the berries in healthy subjects. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of aronia berries on vascular function and gut microbiota composition in a healthy population. METHODS A double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel designed study was conducted in 66 healthy men randomly allocated to consume a (poly)phenol-rich extract (116 mg, 75 g berries), a whole fruit powder (12 mg, 10 g berries), or placebo (maltodextrin) for 12 wk. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD), arterial stiffness, blood pressure, heart rate, and serum biochemistry were assessed. Plasma (poly)phenol metabolites were analyzed by LC-MS. Gut microbiota composition was determined via 16S rRNA sequencing in stool samples. RESULTS Consumption of aronia whole fruit and extract powder for 12 wk led to a significant increase in FMD over control of 0.9% ± 0.4% (95% CI: 0.13%, 1.72%) and 1.2% ± 0.4% (95% CI: 0.36%, 1.97%), respectively. Acute improvements in FMD were also observed 2 h after consumption of aronia extract on day 1 (1.1% ± 0.3%, P = 0.003) and 12 wk later (1.5% ± 0.4%, P = 0.0001). Circulating plasma phenolic metabolites increased upon consumption of the aronia treatments. Although no changes were found in gut microbiota diversity, consumption of aronia extract increased the growth of Anaerostipes (+10.6%, P = 0.01), whereas aronia whole fruit showed significant increases in Bacteroides (+193%, P = 0.01). Correlation analysis identified significant associations between changes in FMD, aronia-derived phenolic metabolites, and specific gut microbial genera. CONCLUSIONS In healthy men, consumption of aronia berry (poly)phenols improved endothelial function and modulated gut microbiota composition, indicating that regular aronia consumption has the potential to maintain cardiovascular health in individuals at low risk of cardiovascular disease. Effects of flavonoid-rich fruits on hypertension in adults: a systematic review.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this systematic review was to synthesize the best available research evidence on the effectiveness of flavonoid-rich fruits in the treatment of hypertension. INTRODUCTION Hypertension is a serious public health concern as it contributes to a significant burden of disease, leading to millions of deaths globally. Complementary therapies including flavonoids have generated interest in assisting the treatment of hypertension. Flavonoids are a type of polyphenol abundant in fruits and a growing body of evidence suggests antihypertensive effects of the flavonoids due to their antioxidant properties. To date, no systematic review has been performed to collate the evidence on the effects of flavonoid-rich fruits on hypertension in adults. INCLUSION CRITERIA This systematic review included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared the administration of any type of flavonoid-rich fruit or equivalent supplement with a placebo or other intervention in adults with hypertension. Trials that measured blood pressure using objective outcome measures such as a manual mercury sphygmomanometer were included. Studies that did not specify the flavonoid component of the fruit or fruit supplement were excluded from the review. Secondary outcomes, including change in weight, blood glucose level, triglycerides and total blood cholesterol levels, were also assessed. METHODS A three-step search was undertaken, including a comprehensive search of the MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Trials (CENTRAL) and CINAHL databases, in September 2018. We also searched Dissertation Abstracts International, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, MedNar and ClinicalTrials.gov to identify unpublished studies. The title and abstracts of the studies were reviewed by two independent reviewers against the inclusion/exclusion criteria. The methodological quality of the potential studies for inclusion were assessed using the critical appraisal checklist for randomized controlled trials as recommended by JBI. Data were pooled in a statistical meta-analysis model. Subgroup-analysis according to type of intervention and length of intervention period was performed. Where statistical pooling was not possible, the findings have been presented in a narrative form. RESULTS Fifteen randomized controlled trials involving 572 participants were included in the review. The subclasses of flavonoids assessed included: anthocyanins, naringin, narirutin and flavan-3-ols. The overall methodological quality of the trials was high. Six trials investigated the effect of the flavonoid intervention on blood pressure within four weeks. Meta-analysis of four of the trials demonstrated no effect of flavonoids on systolic or diastolic blood pressure when compared to placebo (systolic mean difference = -1.02, 95% confidence interval [CI] -3.12, 1.07; p = 0.34, I = 0%; diastolic mean difference = -0.90, 95% CI -2.10, 0.31; p = 0.15, I = 0%). Similarly, pooled results from two crossover RCTs with two-timed dosed interventions in a 24-hour period demonstrated no effect on a reduction in diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.38) but did reveal evidence of a reduction in systolic blood pressure (p = 0). Six trials assessed blood pressure following the flavonoid intervention at more than four weeks follow-up. Meta-analysis of five of the trials demonstrated evidence of no effect on either systolic blood pressure (mean difference = -0.95, 95%CI -3.58, 1.68; p = 0.478, I = 0%) or diastolic blood pressure (mean difference = 0.86, 95%CI -1.11, 2.82; p = 0.393, I = 0%). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this systematic review should be interpreted with caution, given that the results are obtained from single-center trials with small sample sizes. Flavonoids have no effect on systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Further robust RCTs using sample sizes based on power calculations are needed to provide evidence for the use of flavonoid-rich fruits for the management of hypertension.

Abstract
The major quantitative trait loci associated with bunch weight and its component traits in the East African highland banana-breeding population are located on chromosome 3. Bunch weight increase is one of the major objectives of banana improvement programs, but little is known about the loci controlling bunch weight and its component traits. Here we report for the first time some genomic loci associated with bunch weight and its component traits in banana as revealed through a genome-wide association study. A banana-breeding population of 307 genotypes varying in ploidy was phenotyped in three locations under different environmental conditions, and data were collected on bunch weight, number of hands and fruits; fruit length and circumference; and diameter of both fruit and pulp for three crop cycles. The population was genotyped with genotyping by sequencing and 27,178 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were generated. The association between SNPs and the best linear unbiased predictors of traits was performed with TASSEL v5 using a mixed linear model accounting for population structure and kinship. Using Bonferroni correction, false discovery rate, and long-range linkage disequilibrium (LD), 25 genomic loci were identified with significant SNPs and most were localized on chromosome 3. Most SNPs were located in genes encoding uncharacterized and hypothetical proteins, but some mapped to transcription factors and genes involved in cell cycle regulation. Inter-chromosomal LD of SNPs was present in the population, but none of the SNPs were significantly associated with the traits. The clustering of significant SNPs on chromosome 3 supported our hypothesis that fruit filling in this population was under control of a few quantitative trait loci with major effects.
