Current Understanding of Leaf Senescence in Rice.

Abstract
Leaf senescence, which is the last developmental phase of plant growth, is controlled by multiple genetic and environmental factors. Leaf yellowing is a visual indicator of senescence due to the loss of the green pigment chlorophyll. During senescence, the methodical disassembly of macromolecules occurs, facilitating nutrient recycling and translocation from the sink to the source organs, which is critical for plant fitness and productivity. Leaf senescence is a complex and tightly regulated process, with coordinated actions of multiple pathways, responding to a sophisticated integration of leaf age and various environmental signals. Many studies have been carried out to understand the leaf senescence-associated molecular mechanisms including the chlorophyll breakdown, phytohormonal and transcriptional regulation, interaction with environmental signals, and associated metabolic changes. The metabolic reprogramming and nutrient recycling occurring during leaf senescence highlight the fundamental role of this developmental stage for the nutrient economy at the whole plant level. The strong impact of the senescence-associated nutrient remobilization on cereal productivity and grain quality is of interest in many breeding programs. This review summarizes our current knowledge in rice on (i) the actors of chlorophyll degradation, (ii) the identification of stay-green genotypes, (iii) the identification of transcription factors involved in the regulation of leaf senescence, (iv) the roles of leaf-senescence-associated nitrogen enzymes on plant performance, and (v) stress-induced senescence. Compiling the different advances obtained on rice leaf senescence will provide a framework for future rice breeding strategies to improve grain yield.

Genome-wide identification of Pistacia R2R3-MYB gene family and function characterization of PcMYB113 during autumn leaf coloration in Pistacia chinensis.

Abstract
Pistacia chinensis is known for its biodiesel production. Several varieties of this plant have leaves that produce anthocyanin, which is responsible for their reddish coloration in autumn. This reddish hue is what makes them useful as ornamental plants. However, the mechanism of anthocyanin accumulation during autumn leaf coloration remains unclear. R2R3-MYB proteins reportedly regulated anthocyanin biosynthesis in many plant species. Here, we performed a genome-wide analysis and expression profiles of R2R3-MYB transcription factor in Pistacia. A total of 158 R2R3-MYB proteins were identified and grouped into 32 clades. Combining the data from RNA-seq and qRT-PCR, one key gene, EVM0016534, was screened and identified to have the highest correlation with anthocyanin accumulation. It was named PcMYB113 due to its sequence similarity to AtMYB113 and it could bind to the promoter of PcF3H. Furthermore, ectopic expression of PcMYB113 in Arabidopsis promoted the accumulation of anthocyanin in the seed coat, cotyledon, and mature leaves, thus confirming the function of PcMYB113 in anthocyanin biosynthesis. In addition, PcMYB113 had a specifically higher expression in senesced red leaves than in mature green leaves and young red leaves in P. chinensis, thereby suggesting the potential role of PcMYB113 in promoting anthocyanin biosynthesis during autumn leaf coloration. These findings enrich our understanding of the function of R2R3-MYB genes in anthocyanin biosynthesis and autumn leaf coloration.

Review of the Phytochemistry and Biological Activity of Cissus incisa Leaves.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cissus incisa is a Vitaceae with a pantropical distribution. In northern Mexico, its leaves have traditionally been used to treat skin infections, abscesses and tumors. Despite its medicinal uses, few studies have been reported. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to summarize the phytochemical and biological studies carried out so far on the leaves of C. incisa, since this part of the plant is the one frequently used, and awaken scientific interest towards the plant. METHODS Since C. incisa was an undocumented species, most of the information comes from reports of our research group. Databases, books, and websites were also consulted. The information collected was organized and presented in a synthesized way. Plant name was checked with the database "The Plant List". RESULTS 171, 260, and 114 metabolites were identified by UHPLC-QFTOF-MS in the hexane, chloroform/ methanol, and aqueous extracts, respectively. Fatty acyls, sphingolipids, sterols, glycerolipids, prenol lipids, and terpenes are common metabolites found in these extracts. 2-(2´-hydroxydecanoyl amino)-1,3,4-hexadecanotriol-8-ene, 2,3-dihydroxypropyl tetracosanoate, β-sitosterol, β-sitosterol-D-glucopyranoside, α-amyrin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside were also isolated and characterized. Extracts, phytocompounds and semi-synthetic derivatives showed antimicrobial activity against multi-drug resistant bacteria and various cancer cell lines. Results from Perturbation- Theory-Machine Learning-Information-Fusion model (PTMLIF), molecular docking, and vesicular contents assay identified potential targets on the cell membrane, suggesting an antibacterial mechanism of action for ceramides from C. incisa leaves. CONCLUSION This review reports the efforts of the scientific community in authenticating species used in traditional medicine. Moreover, it gives a compendium of phytochemistry and the biological activities of the components from C. incisa leaves.

Abstract
The plant leaf is the main site of photosynthesis. This process converts light energy and inorganic nutrients into chemical energy and organic building blocks for the biosynthesis and maintenance of cellular components and to support the growth of the rest of the plant. The leaf is also the site of gas-water exchange and due to its large surface, it is particularly vulnerable to pathogen attacks. Therefore, the leaf's performance and metabolic modes are inherently determined by its interaction with the environment. Mathematical models of plant metabolism have been successfully applied to study various aspects of photosynthesis, carbon and nitrogen assimilation and metabolism, aided suggesting metabolic intervention strategies for optimized leaf performance, and gave us insights into evolutionary drivers of plant metabolism in various environments. With the increasing pressure to improve agricultural performance in current and future climates, these models have become important tools to improve our understanding of plant-environment interactions and to propel plant breeders efforts. This overview article reviews applications of large-scale metabolic models of leaf metabolism to study plant-environment interactions by means of flux-balance analysis. The presented studies are organized in two ways - by the way the environment interactions are modelled - via external constraints or data-integration and by the studied environmental interactions - abiotic or biotic.

Probing into the Effects of Grapevine Leafroll-Associated Viruses on the Physiology, Fruit Quality and Gene Expression of Grapes.

Abstract
Grapevine leafroll is one of the most widespread and highly destructive grapevine diseases that is responsible for great economic losses to the grape and wine industries throughout the world. Six distinct viruses have been implicated in this disease complex. They belong to three genera, all in the family Closteroviridae. For the sake of convenience, these viruses are named as grapevine leafroll-associated viruses (GLRaV-1, -2, -3, -4, -7, and -13). However, their etiological role in the disease has yet to be established. Furthermore, how infections with each GLRaV induce the characteristic disease symptoms remains unresolved. Here, we first provide a brief overview on each of these GLRaVs with a focus on genome structure, expression strategies and gene functions, where available. We then provide a review on the effects of GLRaV infection on the physiology, fruit quality, fruit chemical composition, and gene expression of grapevine based on the limited information so far reported in the literature. We outline key methodologies that have been used to study how GLRaV infections alter gene expression in the grapevine host at the transcriptomic level. Finally, we present a working model as an initial attempt to explain how infections with GLRaVs lead to the characteristic symptoms of grapevine leafroll disease: leaf discoloration and downward rolling. It is our hope that this review will serve as a starting point for grapevine virology and the related research community to tackle this vastly important and yet virtually uncharted territory in virus-host interactions involving woody and perennial fruit crops.

Plasticity of photosynthetic processes and the accumulation of secondary metabolites in plants in response to monochromatic light environments: A review.

Abstract
Light spectra significantly influence plant metabolism, growth and development. Here, we review the effects of monochromatic blue, red and green light compared to those of multispectral light sources on the morpho-anatomical, photosynthetic and molecular traits of herbaceous plants. Emphasis is given to the effect of light spectra on the accumulation of secondary metabolites, which are important bioactive phytochemicals that determine the nutritional quality of vegetables. Overall, blue light may promote the accumulation of phenylpropanoid-based compounds without substantially affecting plant morpho-anatomical traits compared to the effects of white light. Red light, conversely, strongly alters plant morphology and physiology compared to that under white light without showing a consistent positive effect on secondary metabolism. Due to species-specific effects and the small shifts in the spectral band within the same color that can substantially affect plant growth and metabolism, it is conceivable that monochromatic light significantly affects not only plant photosynthetic performance but also the "quality" of plants by modulating the biosynthesis of photoprotective compounds.

Bio-actives of betel leaf (Piper betle L.): A comprehensive review on extraction, isolation, characterization, and biological activity.

Abstract
Piper betle L., belonging to Piperaceae family, known as a traditional herbal medicinal plant and used for several health benefits in Asian countries. Currently, demand for its products such as herbal drugs, medicines, and natural herbal formulations has increased. The beneficial effects of betel leaves and its products have traditionally exploited for the treatment of several diseases like bad breath, cuts, injuries, inflammations, cold cough, indigestion, etc. Till now, a broad range of bioactive compounds including polyphenols, terpenes, etc., has been identified from the extracts and essential oil (EO) of betel leaves. The structural and functional characterization of the extract and EO bio-actives has been derived by various advanced standard methods. Most of the health-related benefits of betel leaves have been associated with their bioactive phenolic compounds. The extract of this highly perishable product can be used in organic synthesis, food, and beverage industry, pharmaceuticals, etc., to the environmental issues. The present review provides information on extraction techniques, identification of bioactive compounds, and their biological activities. That apart, information on processing, preservation, and health benefits along with their mechanisms has also been added.

An overview of plant-based natural biostimulants for sustainable horticulture with a particular focus on moringa leaf extracts.

Abstract
The horticulture sector is facing various challenges in the near future. Aside from maintaining or even improving yields, sustainable horticulture production is crucial to achieve food security. Reducing the reliance on agro-chemicals and/or increasing the efficiency of use under a changing climate is crucial. Natural biostimulants can play an important role in this regard, increasing production at a relatively low cost sustainably. Natural biostimulant feedstocks include leaf, root or seed extracts, either individually or in combination with others. Their positive effect on horticultural production is mostly due to plant growth-enhancing bioactive compounds such as phytohormones, amino acids, and nutrients. Here we review recent progress made in research and applications on plant-derived extracts with an emphasis on the use of these renewable biochemicals as biostimulants in sustainable horticulture. Moringa leaf extracts in particular have been shown to improve seed germination, plant growth and yield, nutrient use efficiency, crop and product quality traits (pre- and post-harvest), as well as tolerance to abiotic stresses. Although horticulture production relies on synthetic fertilisers to maintain and improve production, the use of plant-derived biostimulants such as moringa leaf extracts may be an option to reduce quantities needed and thus contribute in achieving global food security sustainably.

Abstract
For land plants, water is the principal governor of growth. Photosynthetic performance is highly dependent on the stable and suitable water status of leaves, which is balanced by the water transport capacity, the water loss rate as well as the water capacitance of the plant. This review discusses the links between leaf water status and photosynthesis, specifically focussing on the coordination of CO2 and water transport within leaves, and the potential role of leaf capacitance and elasticity on CO2 and water transport.

Metabolic acclimation-a key to enhancing photosynthesis in changing environments?

Abstract
Plants adjust their photosynthetic capacity in response to their environment in a way that optimizes their yield and fitness. There is growing evidence that this acclimation is a response to changes in the leaf metabolome, but the extent to which these are linked and how this is optimized remain poorly understood. Using as an example the metabolic perturbations occurring in response to cold, we define the different stages required for acclimation, discuss the evidence for a metabolic temperature sensor, and suggest further work towards designing climate-smart crops. In particular, we discuss how constraint-based and kinetic metabolic modelling approaches can be used to generate targeted hypotheses about relevant pathways, and argue that a stronger integration of experimental and in silico studies will help us to understand the tightly regulated interplay of carbon partitioning and resource allocation required for photosynthetic acclimation to different environmental conditions.
