Arenibacter aquaticus sp. nov., a marine bacterium isolated from surface sea water in the South China Sea.

Abstract
A Gram-stain-negative and facultatively anaerobic bacterial strain, designated GUOT, was isolated from surface water collected from the South China Sea. Cells were non-flagellate, yellow, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped. The 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons with species in the genus Arenibacter showed that strain GUOT shares the highest similarity of 97.5 % with Arenibacter echinorum and Arenibacter palladensis. Average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain GUOT and its related type strains were 77.1-78.4% and 20.8-26.2 % respectively. Growth of strain GUOT occurred at 15-50°C (optimum, 20-25°C), pH 5-7.5 (pH 6) and in media containing 0-7 % NaCl (optimum, 0-1 %). Cells contained methanol-soluble yellow-coloured pigments but flexirubin-type pigments were absent. The major fatty acids (>5 %) were iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, summed feature 3, iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The dominant polar lipids comprised phosphatidylethanolamine and some unidentified polar lipids. The main respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6. The DNA G+C content of strain GUOT was 40.1 %. Based on the presented data, we consider strain GUOT to represent a novel species of the genus Arenibacter, for which the name Arenibacter aquaticus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GUOT (=KCTC 62629T=MCCC 1K03559T).

Nitrincola iocasae sp. nov., a bacterium isolated from sediment collected at a cold seep field in the South China Sea.

Abstract
A novel bacterium, designated strain KXZD1103T, was isolated from sediment collected at a cold seep field of the Formosa Ridge in the South China Sea. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, motile, oxidase- and catalase-positive, and grew optimally at 28 °C, pH 6.0-pH 7.0 and in the presence of 1-3 % (w/v) NaCl. The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c/C18 : 1 ω6c), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c/C16 : 1 ω6c) and C16 : 0. The major respiratory ubiquinone was Q-8. The predominant polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain KXZD1103T grouped with members of the genus Nitrincola, with Nitrincola lacisaponensis 4CAT (98.1 % sequence similarity) and Nitrincola schmidtii R4-8T (97.7 %) as its closest neighbours. Genome sequencing revealed a genome size of 4.17 Mb and a DNA G+C content of 50.1 %. Genomic average nucleotide identity values for strain KXZD1103T with the type strains within the genus Nitrincola ranged from 71.0 to 75.7 %, while the in silico DNA-DNA hybridization values for strain KXZD1103T with these strains ranged from 16.1 to 21.6 %. On the basis of the results of phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses, strain KXZD1103T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Nitrincola, for which the name Nitrincola iocasae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KXZD1103T (=KCTC 72678T=MCCC 1K04283T).

Upwelling Bays: How Coastal Upwelling Controls Circulation, Habitat, and Productivity in Bays.

Abstract
Bays in coastal upwelling regions are physically driven and biochemically fueled by their interaction with open coastal waters. Wind-driven flow over the shelf imposes a circulation in the bay, which is also influenced by local wind stress and thermal bay-ocean density differences. Three types of bays are recognized based on the degree of exposure to coastal currents and winds (wide-open bays, square bays, and elongated bays), and the characteristic circulation and stratification patterns of each type are described. Retention of upwelled waters in bays allows for dense phytoplankton blooms that support productive bay ecosystems. Retention is also important for the accumulation of larvae, which accounts for high recruitment in bays. In addition, bays are coupled to the shelf ecosystem through export of plankton-rich waters during relaxation events. Ocean acidification and deoxygenation are a concern in bays because local extrema can develop beneath strong stratification.

Sphingosinithalassobacter tenebrarum sp. nov., isolated from a deep-sea cold seep.

Abstract
A Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, yellow-pigmented, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated zrk23T, was isolated from a deep-sea cold seep. The strain was characterized by a polyphasic approach to clarify its taxonomic position. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences placed zrk23T within the genus Sphingosinithalassobacter and showed the highest similarity to Sphingosinithalassobacter portus FM6T (97.93 %). Growth occurs at temperatures from 16 to 45 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH values between pH 6.0 and 8.5 (optimum, pH 7.0) and in 0-5.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 1.5 %). The major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C14 : 0 2-OH and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c). The major isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-10. Predominant polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified phosphoglycolipid, three unidentified glycolipids and three unidentified phospholipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 64.69 %. The average nucleotide identity values between zrk23T and the most closely related available genome, of Sphingosinithalassobacter portus FM6T, was 82.21 %, indicating that zrk23T was clearly distinguished from S. portus. The analysis of genome sequence of zrk23T revealed that there were many genes associated with degradation of aromatic compounds existing in the genome of zrk23T. As a result of the combination of the results of phylogenetic analysis and phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data, zrk23T was considered to represent a novel species of the genus Sphingosinithalassobacter, for which the name Sphingosinithalassobacter tenebrarum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is zrk23T (=KCTC 72896T=MCCC 1K04416T).

Drinking Refined Deep-Sea Water Improves the Gut Ecosystem with Beneficial Effects on Intestinal Health in Humans: A Randomized Double-Blind Controlled Trial.

Abstract
World health trends are focusing on a balanced food and beverage intake for healthy life. Refined deep-sea water (RDSW), obtained from deep-sea water collected offshore in Muroto (Japan), is mineral-rich drinking water. We previously reported that drinking RDSW improves human gut health. Here, we analyzed the effect of drinking RDSW on the gut ecosystem to understand this effect. This was a randomized double-blind controlled trial. Ninety-eight healthy adults were divided into two groups: RDSW or mineral water (control). The participants consumed 1 L of either water type daily for 12 weeks. A self-administered questionnaire and stool and urine samples were collected through the intervention. The following were determined: fecal biomarkers of secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA), five putrefactive products, and nine short-chain-fatty-acids (SCFAs) as the primary outcomes; and three urinary isoflavones and the questionnaire as secondary outcomes. In post-intervention in the RDSW group, we found increased concentrations of five SCFAs and decreased concentrations of phenol and sIgA (p < 0.05). The multiple logistic analysis demonstrated that RDSW significantly affected two biomarkers (acetic and 3-methylbutanoic acids) of the five SCFAs mentioned above (p < 0.05). Similarly, the concentrations of urinary isoflavones tended to increase in post-intervention in the RDSW group. Constipation was significantly alleviated in the RDSW group (94%) compared with the control group (60%). Drinking RDSW improves the intestinal environment, increasing fecal SCFAs and urinary isoflavones, which leads to broad beneficial effects in human.

Progress in the Study and Use of Seawater Vegetables.

Abstract
As global soil salinization increases, halophytes that can grow in saline soils are the primary choice for improving soil quality. Some halophytes can even be irrigated with seawater and used as vegetables. These so-called seawater vegetables include those that can be planted on saline and alkali soils and some edible halophytes and ordinary vegetables that are salt-tolerant. The cultivation of seawater vegetables on saline soil has become a matter of increasing interest. In this review, we focus on the salt-tolerance mechanisms and potential applications of some seawater vegetables. We also summarize their value to health, medicine, industry, and the economy as a whole. Further improvement and development to support the use of seawater vegetables will require in-depth research at the cellular and molecular levels.

GEOTRACES: Accelerating Research on the Marine Biogeochemical Cycles of Trace Elements and Their Isotopes.

Abstract
The biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and their isotopes (TEIs) constitute an active area of oceanographic research due to their role as essential nutrients for marine organisms and their use as tracers of oceanographic processes. Selected TEIs also provide diagnostic information about the physical, geological, and chemical processes that supply or remove solutes in the ocean. Many of these same TEIs provide information about ocean conditions in the past, as their imprint on marine sediments can be interpreted to reflect changes in ocean circulation, biological productivity, the ocean carbon cycle, and more. Other TEIs have been introduced as the result of human activities and are considered contaminants. The development and implementation of contamination-free methods for collecting and analyzing samples for TEIs revolutionized marine chemistry, revealing trace element distributions with oceanographically consistent features and new insights about the processes regulating them. Despite these advances, the volume and geographic coverage of high-quality TEI data by the end of the twentieth century were insufficient to constrain their global biogeochemical cycles. To accelerate progress in this field of research, marine geochemists developed a coordinated international effort to systematically study the marine biogeochemical cycles of TEIs-the GEOTRACES program. Following a decade of planning and implementation, GEOTRACES launched its main field effort in 2010. This review, roughly midway through the field program, summarizes the steps involved in designing the program, its management structure, and selected findings.

A Lower Sodium Neapolitan Pizza Prepared with Seawater in Place of Salt: Nutritional Properties, Sensory Characteristics, and Metabolic Effects.

Abstract
Seawater is rich in minerals which may help confer good palatability to foods, favouring the use of smaller amounts of salt, a recognized measure of cardiovascular prevention. The aim of this study was to investigate the nutritional properties, sensory characteristics and metabolic effects of a typical Neapolitan pizza prepared with seawater (SWP) in place of common salt, in comparison with Standard traditional Pizza (StP). The nutritional characteristics and the chemical profile of the SWP and StP were assessed by chemical analyses and the use of Food Composition Tables. Twelve healthy volunteers were recruited for a Randomized Controlled Trial, with the consumption of one StP and one SWP using a balanced crossover design. The satiating power and palatability of the two pizzas were tested by the administration of Visual Analogue Scales. Serum glucose, insulin and sodium were measured every 30 min and 3 h urines were collected after each meal. SWP contained nearly 50% less NaCl and a larger amount of micronutrients compared with StP. No significant differences were detected between the two pizzas with regard to satiating power, pleasantness and glycemic and insulinemic response. However, a significant difference was found in the urine volume collected over the 3 h after the two meals (194 mL after StP vs. 292 mL after SWP, p = 0.018) and in the 3 h sodium balance (+1.6 g after StP vs. +0.5 g after SWP, p = 0.002). Conclusions: SWP appears to be a food with favourable nutritional characteristics, very good acceptability and healthy metabolic properties: these results warrant confirmation by a larger intervention trial.

Aequoribacter fuscus gen. nov., sp. nov., a new member of the family Halieaceae, isolated from coastal seawater.

Abstract
A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, obligately aerobic, nonflagellated, and chemoheterotrophic bacterium, designated IMCC3088T, was isolated from coastal seawater of the Yellow Sea. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that this strain belonged to the family Halieaceae which shared the highest sequence similarities with Luminiphilus syltensis NOR5-1BT (94.5%) and Halioglobus pacificus S1-72T (94.5%), followed by 92.3-94.3% sequence similarities with other species within the aforementioned family. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that strain IMCC3088T was robustly clustered with Luminiphilus syltensis NOR5-1BT within the family Halieaceae. However, average amino acid identity (AAI), percentages of conserved proteins (POCP), average nucleotide identity (ANI), and alignment fraction (AF) between strain IMCC3088T and Luminiphilus syltensis NOR5-1BT were 54.5%, 47.7%, 68.0%, and 16.5%, respectively, suggesting that they belonged to different genera. Whole-genome sequencing of strain IMCC3088T revealed a 3.1 Mbp genome size with a DNA G + C content of 51.7 mol%. The genome encoded diverse metabolic pathways including sulfur oxidation, phenol degradation, and proteorhodopsin phototrophy. Mono-unsaturated fatty acids were found to be the predominant cellular fatty acid components in the strain. Phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, and diphosphatidylglycerol were the primarily identified polar lipids, and ubiquinone-8 was identified as a major respiratory quinone. The taxonomic data collected herein suggested that strain IMCC3088T represented a novel genus and species of the family Halieaceae, for which the name Aequoribacter fuscus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain (= KACC 15529T = NBRC 108213T).

Impacts of Zn and Cu enrichment under ocean acidification scenario on a phytoplankton community from tropical upwelling system.

Abstract
Increasing dissolution of CO2 in the surface ocean is rapidly decreasing its pH and changing carbon chemistry which is further affecting marine biota in several ways. Phytoplankton response studies under the combination of elevated CO2 and trace metals are rare. We have conducted two consecutive onboard incubation experiments (R. V. Sindhu Sadhana; August 2017) in the eastern Arabian Sea (SW coast of India) during an upwelling event. A nutrient enriched diatom bloom was initiated onboard and grown under ambient (≈400 μatm, A-CO2) and high CO2 levels (≈1000 μatm; H-CO2) with different zinc (Zn; 1 nM) and copper (Cu) concentrations (1 nM, 2 nM and 8 nM). Phytoplankton community composition and the dominant genera were different during these two experiments. CO2 enrichment alone did not show any significant growth stimulating impact on the experimental community except enhanced cell density in the first experiment. Addition of Zn at A-CO2 level revealed no noticeable responses; whereas, the same treatment under H-CO2 level significantly reduced cell number. Considerably high protein content under H-CO2+Zn treatment was possibly counteracting Zn toxicity which also caused slower growth rate. Cu addition did not show any noticeable impact on growth and biomass production except increased protein content as well as decreased carbohydrate: protein ratio. This can be attributed to relatively higher protein synthesis than carbohydrate to alleviate oxidative stress generated by Cu. The centric diatom Chaetoceros and toxin producing pennate diatom Pseudo-nitzschia showed no significant response to either CO2 or Zn enrichment. Large centric diatom Leptocylindrus and Skeletonema responded positively to Zn addition in both CO2 levels. The former species showed the most sensitive response at the highest Cu and H-CO2 treatment; whereas, the pennate diatoms Nitzschia and Pseudo-nitzschia (toxigenic diatom) showed higher resilience under elevated CO2 and Cu levels. This observation indicated that in future ocean, increasing CO2 concentrations and trace metal pollution may potentially alter phytoplankton community structure and may facilitate toxigenic diatom bloom in the coastal waters.
