Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate skin barrier and hydration effects of a new rebalancing moisture treatment (TRMT) and to assess efficacy and tolerability in subjects with photodamaged skin. METHODS In an epidermal skin model, tissues (n = 5/group) were topically treated with 25 µL of TRMT, 25 µL of a market-leading moisturizer (MLM), or untreated for 60 minutes. Hydration was measured at 0, 15, and 30 minutes. Tissues were harvested for gene expression analysis of markers associated with skin barrier and hydration: Claudin (CLD), Aquaporin (AQP), Hyaluronic Acid Syntheses (HAS), and Hyaluronidase (HYAL). A clinical study evaluated twice-daily application of TRMT, assessing changes in fine lines/wrinkles, brightness, texture, erythema, and tolerability from baseline through week 8. Hydration was measured using electrical impedance. RESULTS TRMT and MLM demonstrated significant increases in hydration vs untreated tissue at each timepoint (P < .005), with greater hydration effects observed for TRMT vs MLM. TRMT-treated tissues demonstrated greater expression of CLD, AQP, and HA, and reduced expression of HYAL vs untreated and MLM-treated tissues. Twice-daily application of TRMT demonstrated significant improvements at 2 weeks in fine lines/wrinkles (P < .001), brightness (P < .0001), texture (P < .0004), and hydration (P < .004). At 8 weeks, statistically significant improvements were achieved in all categories. CONCLUSION In an epidermal skin model, TRMT demonstrated significant increases in hydration, greater hydration effects, and expression of key markers associated with skin barrier and hydration vs a MLM. Twice-daily application of TRMT was well tolerated and resulted in early, significant improvements in hydration and visible improvements in skin brightness, texture, fine lines/wrinkles, and erythema at 8 weeks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both topical and oral probiotics are becoming widely used. There is increasing interest in the cosmetic potential in topical probiotics. Nitrosomonas eutropha is an ammonia-oxidizing bacteria. AIM: The purpose of this study was to assess whether there is any improvement in facial wrinkles with the use of Nitrosomonas eutropha, a topical probiotic. METHODS In this prospective study, high-resolution photographs were obtained in twenty-nine participants at baseline and after using topical Nitrosomonas eutropha for seven days. RESULTS There was a significant difference in wrinkle depth and severity in the high concentration probiotic group. There was also a statistically significant improvement in pigmentation of the forehead and glabella in the higher concentration group. CONCLUSIONS Nitrosomonas eutropha may have aesthetic benefits in terms of reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Larger studies with longer treatment and follow-up periods are required.

An Advanced, Physician-Strength Retinol Peel Improves Signs of Aging and Acne Across a Range of Skin Types Including Melasma and Skin of Color.

Abstract
Background: Facial chemical peels are highly sought after by patients with photodamage, acne, and melasma. An advanced, physician-strength superficial peel, containing 3% retinol with other firming and volumizing ingredients was developed to exfoliate, improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and plump and firm skin, while promoting a bright, even complexion. Objective: A clinical study was conducted to evaluate the tolerability, safety, and efficacy of the 3% retinol peel with a supportive homecare regimen across a range of peel candidates, females aged 18-65 years, with photodamage, acne, hyperpigmentation or melasma, and skin of color, over a series of 2-4 peels. Method: The 3% retinol peel formulation was administered under physician direction in 6-week intervals. Subjects with photodamaged skin, acne, hyperpigmentation/melasma, or skin of color (Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI) received 2-4 peels along with a supportive homecare regimen. Dermatologist grading, self-assessment, and digital photography documented tolerability and efficacy parameters. Results: 24 subjects participated in the study with a total of 78 peels administered (Photodamage group, n=14 [with an Acne subgroup, n=5]; Melasma group, n=5; Skin of Color, n=5). The 3% retinol peel along with the homecare regimen was well tolerated under physician direction in all skin types and conditions assessed. Obvious peeling was noticeable in many subjects 3 days post-peel and resolved by day 7. In the photodamaged group, dermatologist clinical grading of fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, laxity, mottled pigmentation, lack of clarity/radiance, and overall photodamage was significantly improved (P<0.05). Benefits were observed in all groups and supported by self-assessment. Digital photography demonstrated tolerability in the days immediately post-peel, along with benefits to photodamage. Conclusion: The 3% retinol superficial peel was well tolerated and an efficacious cosmetic treatment under physician supervision in subjects of all skin types to firm skin, improve fine lines and wrinkles, and promote a bright, even complexion. Evaluation of Efficacy of a Skin Care Regimen Containing Methyl Estradiolpropanoate (MEP) for Treating Estrogen Deficient Skin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging is a complex process due to the interplay of intrinsic factors (such as genetics and hormones) and extrinsic factors (including ultraviolet radiation and pollution). A significant cause of intrinsic aging in women is the loss of estrogen as a result of the onset of menopause. OBJECTIVE A single site experience trial to assess the efficacy of Emepelle (Biopelle, Ferndale Pharma Group, Ferndale, MI), a skin care regimen containing Methyl Estradiolpropanoate (MEP)®, for the treatment of Estrogen Deficient Skin (EDS). The secondary objective was to assess patient tolerability and satisfaction. METHODS Fourteen female subjects aged 53-68 years who were amenorrheic for 1-10 years (mean, 5 years), with at least a Grade II in Wrinkling (fine to moderate-depth wrinkles, moderate number of lines) and score of at least 5 (of 9; moderate-to-severe) in elastosis on the clinician-assessed Fitzpatrick-Goldman Classification of Wrinkling and Elastosis Scale, and a 3 or greater on the Investigator Facial Skin Hydration Scale, were included in the study. The subjects were instructed to apply the product Emepelle Serum in the morning, and the product Emepelle Night Cream in the evening to the entire freshly washed and dried face. Follow up visits were performed at 8 weeks, 14 weeks, and 20 weeks to evaluate efficacy and safety. Canfield Visia Complexion Analysis and standard photography was performed at baseline and at each follow up visit. RESULTS On a 0-4 Facial Hydration Scale, 100% of study participants by week 20 showed at least one-grade improvement and 93% saw two grades or more improvement in hydration. 100% of study participants showed aesthetic improvements per investigator-assessed Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) at week 14. By week 20, 93% of study participants responded that the combination of Emepelle Serum and Night Cream regimen helped improve wrinkles, texture, and color, and 86% of study participants responded that Emepelle helped improve sun-damage, thickness, and integrity. In the Quality of Life questionnaire, 86% responded that Emepelle helped alleviate some or all of the skin issues they developed since entering menopause. Investigator clinical assessment scored patients with a 53% improvement in texture, 21% improvement in keratoses, and 15% improvement in laxity on the Alexiades-Armenakas Comprehensive Grading Scale for Assessment of Skin Aging and Photodamage by the end of the study at week 20. CONCLUSIONS Patients in the study indicated satisfaction with the formulations of Emepelle Serum and Night Cream. Younger patients showed significant improvement by about 8 weeks. For patients who have been in menopause longer, significant improvement was seen by week 20, suggesting MEP’s potential ability to reactivate dormant estrogen receptors. Abstract
BACKGROUND Maintaining a youthful appearance is a priority for many people. Global eye rejuvenation is sought more frequently and at a younger age than other treatments. Major concerns around the eye area are periorbital hyperpigmentation, puffiness, and lines and wrinkles. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are complex carbohydrates that modulate skin health, repair and renew skin's appearance. Heparan sulfate (HS) is the most biologically active GAG, although it is too large and polar to penetrate the skin. Low Molecular Weight Heparan Sulfate (LMW-HS) is a smaller version of HS designed for skin penetration while preserving its activity. In this study, we investigated the effects of a topical eye cream containing LMW-HS and a blend of naturally derived extracts to address global periorbital rejuvenation. METHOD A single-center, open-label study including female and male subjects (n = 15) was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of an eye cream containing LMW-HS and a blend of naturally derived extracts applied twice daily for 12 weeks. RESULTS Improvements in the appearance of periorbital hyperpigmentation and fine and coarse wrinkles were observed as early as week 2 with continuous improvement up to 12 weeks. Decrease in puffiness (73%) and dark circles (93%) were reported by subjects. The test product was highly rated by subjects on performance and attributes and was well tolerated by all the subjects in this study. CONCLUSION Results demonstrated that an eye cream containing LMW-HS and a blend of naturally derived extracts achieved global skin rejuvenation by improving appearance of periorbital hyperpigmentation, puffiness, and fine and coarse wrinkles.

Evaluation of tolerability and skin changes after application of topical antiaging products based on Sibanid SG®, plant stem cells and regenerative and biostimulating active ingredients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The oxidative stress, the UV radiations, the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and the hyaluronidase enzyme play an extremly important role in skin aging processes, leading an increasing production of elastase, collagenase and hyaluronidase that brings to degradation of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid respectively. They are responsible to provide strength, elasticity and moisture to the skin. Innovative devices were developed based on the effective ingredients against hyaluronidase and MMP. The inhibition of the destructuring enzymes of the dermis is the main mechanism of action of Bioliftan treatment, and this process is mainly addressed to hyaluronidase and MMP inhibition. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy, tolerability and skin changes induced by antiaging topical based on Sibanid SG®, plant stem cells and regenerative and biostimulating active ingredients. The products tested are Bioliftan Day cream and Bioliftan concentrate. METHODS All parameters were evaluated before the beginning of treatment (T0), and 60 (T1) days later. The evaluation of the effectiveness of the products was performed by clinical examination, photographic and instrumental documentation by corneometry, X-rite, elastometry, Moisture Meter EpiD, Confocal microscopy. RESULTS The products tested after 60 days have induced an increase of hydration of the external cutaneous layers (P<0.0001), skin hydration (P<0.0001), skin brightness (P<0.01), skin elasticity (P<0.0001). All results were statistically significant. All volunteers completed the study. No patients reported side-effects. All results were confirmed by confocal microscopy. CONCLUSIONS Our study evaluated efficacy, tolerability and skin changes after 60 days of Bioliftan day cream and Bioliftan serum concentrate application on the skin aged. Our study has shown an excellent skin tollerance of the products tested.

Evaluation of the effectiveness and safety of peppermint peel (PMP) soft peeling for skin ageing.

Abstract
Turning to peeling in a dermatological sphere is extensively common and has been used for a long time. From the use of single acids moving on to the so-called compound peelings (associations of more than one substance in the same product) and the combined peelings which take advantage of the action of different substances in a synergistic manner (different products are applied sequentially) in order to best guarantee a greater effectiveness of the treatment for the recommended target. Superficial peelings, combined and not, have led to a drastic reduction in the percentage of incidence of adverse events typical of medium and deep peels. Nevertheless, it has been demonstrated that superficial peels bring about a rejuvenating effect through the mechanical stimulation of the Skin Stress Response System (SSRS), system designated to repairing the damaged tissue and restoring of the normal homeostasis. Clinical trials aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the peppermint peel (PMP) medical device in subjects with different ageing expressions both in qualitative terms (different blemishes such as discolouration, fine wrinkles, elastosis, atony and skin inelasticity, laxity, scarce superficial hydration) and in quantitative terms (degree, extension and number of lesions). A non-controlled multi-centric clinical trial was done in 121 subjects. The use protocol calls for a session every 2 weeks for a total of 4 sessions. Subjects were evaluated before each subsequent session at the first and at 2-4-8 weeks of the fourth and last treatment. During the study there were no adverse events. Only a minimal scurfy flaking and a very slight redness were reported. From an effectiveness point of view, the percentage of therapeutic failure, judged with a score equal to or greater than 4 or 5 in Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) scale was 0%. Best score was obtained in subjects ranging in ages between 38 and 57 (2.02) and in women (2.02) years, while the less satisfactory one was obtained in males (2.14). The study has demonstrated that PMP and the proposed protocol are effective and safe to treat subject with skin signs of chrono and photo ageing, thanks to its capabilities of carrying out a mechanic action indicated as a coadjuvant in the treatment of the dermoepidermic revitalisation through chemical exfoliation and hydration.

Abstract
Resveratrol is an effective anti-aging molecule with diverse biologic activity. It functions as a dual antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals and increase intrinsic antioxidant capacity. Additionally resveratrol increases mitochondrial biogenesis and has anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and anti-cancer activity. In this paper we will focus on the use of topically applied resveratrol using a proprietary blend containing 1% resveratrol, 0.5% baicalin, and 1% vitamin E. This stabilized high concentration formulation demonstrates percutaneous absorption and alterations in gene expression such as hemoxygenase-1 (HO-1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGFA), and collagen 3 (COL3A1). Clinical assessment showed a statistically significant improvement in fine lines and wrinkles, skin firmness, skin elasticity, skin laxity, hyperpigmentation, radiance, and skin roughness over baseline in 12 weeks. Ultrasound measurements in the periorbital area showed an average improvement of 18.9% in dermal thickness suggesting significant dermal remodeling. These studies confirm that topical resveratrol, baicalin, and vitamin E are valuable ingredient that can be used for skin rejuvenation.

Abstract
No study has yet determined the anti-wrinkle efficacy of green tea plus lotus in Asian subjects using skin image analysis technique. In this study, the efficacy of two cosmetic active formulations intended for the treatment of facial wrinkles (green tea and lotus extract) has been evaluated in healthy subjects using a non-invasive device, the Visioscan(®) VC, and software for surface evaluation of living skin (SELS). Thirty-three healthy Asian subjects, all men, were enrolled after consent in a placebo-controlled comparative study with a split face design. One group applied multiple emulsions with green tea. The second group applied multiple emulsions with lotus extract, while a third group applied a multiple emulsion with a combination of both extracts. In all three groups, active formulations were applied to one side of the face and the placebo to the other side, once daily over the 60-day treatment course. Non-invasive measurements were performed at baseline and on days 30 and 60. Interesting and significant improvements were observed for the treatment effects on skin roughness (SEr), scaliness (SEsc), smoothness (SEsm), and wrinkling (SEw). For example, a 49.99% improvement in skin smoothness (SEsm) from baseline value and -23.22% and perfection in facial wrinkles (SEw) substantiated that combined treatment is superior over single treatments. Green tea and lotus combined in multiple emulsions brought a superior synergistic anti-aging effect. We conclude that diverse anti-oxidant constituents in both plants have a potential influence on skin surface parameters, thus indicating these plants as the future of new anti-aging products.

Abstract
Prevention of skin aging and its treatment is an emerging field for development of new formulations in cosmetics. Accordingly, plant extracts with antioxidant properties are beneficial cosmetic ingredients for this purpose. This study was aimed at developing a stable and easily manufactured emulgel including green tea extract and rose oil that is effective on the barrier function and hydration of the skin. An emulgel formulation containing 20 % green tea extract and 5 % rose oil was designed as a result of pre-formulation studies. Physicochemical characterization, in vitro stability studies, in vivo water content of the stratum corneum and transepidermal water loss studies were carried out afterwards. In vivo studies on ten female subjects were evaluated by using non-invasive skin bioengineering techniques. Finally, a cosmetically acceptable, stable and effective emulgel formulation for skin barrier function with good hydrating properties was obtained for skin hydration, protection and anti-aging purposes.
