Upon retirement, underground coal miners who previously expended a lot of energy in their work, do not change their eating habits, resulting in weight gain. Increasing moderate intensity physical activity and adjusting the diet may combat this. However, introduction at the same time may be difficult and demotivating for some individuals. This 12-week intervention study aimed to assess the effect of Nordic walking (NW) or a reduced calorie diet on 30 overweight and obese coal miners. The results showed that both low calorie diet and NW improved body measurements, however low-calorie diet was more successful. NW did improve indicators of lower cardiovascular disease risk compared to low-calorie diet, but this was not sustained. It was concluded that although both treatments were effective in improving body measurements and fats, calorie restriction was more effective. This study could be used by physicians to recommend a calorie restricted diet to overweight and obese individuals; however, the combined effect of diet and exercise should not be underestimated, and exercise should be considered after successful introduction of a modified diet.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Overweight and obesity after retirement are likely to be caused by unhealthy eating habits and the energy intake exceeding the energy expenditure. OBJECTIVES This study was designed to assess the effects of two 12-week interventions involving, respectively, either regular physical activity or a modified lower-calorie diet on the anthropometric parameters and blood lipid profiles in overweight and obese retired miners with lipid disorders. DESIGN The study participants (n = 30, aged 58.7 ± 4.1 years, body height 174.8 ± 7.3 cm, body weight 96.6 ± 13.9 kg) were randomly assigned to 2 intervention groups: the Nordic walking group (NW), which exercised with intensity from 60 to 70% of participants' maximal heart rates for 1 h 3 times a week, and the modified diet group (MD). Modification of the diet consisted of reducing the daily energy intake by 30%, increasing the dietary content of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids and dietary fiber, and reducing the proportion of saturated fatty acids. The variables assessed at baseline and after 6 and 12 weeks were: anthropometric parameters (body weight, fat mass content [FM], fat percentage [BF], BMI, waist circumference [WC], hip circumference [HC], and waist-to-hip ratio [WHR]) and blood lipid indicators (total cholesterol [TC], triglycerides [TG], low density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C], and high density lip-oprotein cholesterol [HDL-C]). RESULTS The body weight of the participants in the NW was lower at week 12 by an average of 5 kg, BMI by 6%, FB by 19%, FM by 15%, WC by 8%, HC by 6%, and WHR by 3%. In the MD, the respective decreases were 8 kg and 8, 25, 20, 6, 2, and 7%. In the MD, the postintervention concentrations of TC and TG were within the reference range. CONCLUSION Both 12-week interventions improved the anthropometric parameters and blood lipid profiles of retired heavy manual workers, with the improvements being more pronounced in the dieting group.

Studies have shown that green tea extract (GTE) and exercise may help manage obesity. This randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial study aimed to assess the role of GTE plus exercise on the amount of cholesterol in the blood and in the treatment of chronic diseases in 24 overweight and obese men over 12 weeks. The results showed that although cholesterol levels did not improve with GTE, they were maintained, whereas the placebo groups increased. There was an improvement in liver function in the GTE group, which was not observed with placebo. It was concluded that GTE plus exercise maintained but did not improve cholesterol levels in overweight and obese men contrary to previous study results. This could be due to a lower dose of GTE in the present study. GTE plus exercise did improve liver function. This study could be used by practitioners to recommend GTE supplementation and exercise in the management of cholesterol and to improve liver function in overweight and obese patients.
Abstract
This study was aimed to investigate the effect of green tea extract (GTE) combined with brisk walking on lipid profiles and the liver function in overweight and obese men. Twenty-four participants were randomized to either the GTE group or the placebo group for 12 weeks with a 4-week follow-up. The walking program consisted of four 60-min-sessions/week and all participants were asked to consume two GTE (150mg) or placebo tablets daily. After 12-week intervention, GTE group resulted in a significant difference in the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC) levels when compared to placebo group (P < 0.01). There was also a significant reduction in the aspartate aminotransferase levels (P < 0.01) in the GTE group, but no change in the placebo group (P >0.05). There was no change in the triglyceride or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels in the placebo group, but a significant reduction was noted in the HDL-C levels in the GTE group (P < 0.05). GTE combined with brisk walking resulted in a significant change in the LDL-C and TC levels, however, a significant reduce in HDL-C in the GTE group. The study has a more positive effect on the liver function than brisk walking alone.

Excess fat in the liver, known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has been shown to increase the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Standard treatment regimens consist of low-calorie (LC) diets and exercise, however these may be ineffective at reversing fat accumulation in the liver. A very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) has been proposed as an alternative treatment for NAFLD. This randomised control pilot study of 39 individuals with obesity aimed to compare LC diet and VLCKD on fat accumulation and indicators for NAFLD for two months. The results showed greater weight loss, abdominal fat reduction, liver fat reduction and improvements in liver function with VLCKD compared to the LC diet. Cholesterol was significantly reduced by both diets. However liver stiffness remained unchanged. The authors concluded that VLCKD was more successful at reducing liver fat and abdominal fat accumulation than current standard therapy and has the potential to improve NAFLD. Health care professionals could use this study to improve liver and abdominal fat loss in patients with obesity to improve NAFLD, when standard therapy has been inadequate.
Abstract
Background: Currently the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is based on weight loss through lifestyle changes, such as exercise combined with calorie-restricted dieting. Objectives: To assess the effects of a commercially available weight loss program based on a very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) on visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and liver fat content compared to a standard low-calorie (LC) diet. As a secondary aim, we evaluated the effect on liver stiffness measurements. Methods: Open, randomized controlled, prospective pilot study. Patients were randomized and treated either with an LC or a VLCKD and received orientation and encouragement to physical activity equally for both groups. VAT, liver fat fraction, and liver stiffness were measured at baseline and after 2 months of treatment using magnetic resonance imaging. Paired t-tests were used for comparison of continuous variables between visits and unpaired test between groups. Categorical variables were compared using the χ2-test. Pearson correlation was used to assess the association between VAT, anthropometric measures, and hepatic fat fraction. A significance level of the results was established at p < 0.05. Results: Thirty-nine patients (20 with VLCKD and 19 with LC) were evaluated at baseline and 2 months of intervention. Relative weight loss at 2 months was -9.59 ± 2.87% in the VLCKD group and -1.87 ± 2.4% in the LC group (p < 0.001). Mean reductions in VAT were -32.0 cm2 for VLCKD group and -12.58 cm2 for LC group (p < 0.05). Reductions in liver fat fraction were significantly more pronounced in the VLCKD group than in the LC group (4.77 vs. 0.79%; p < 0.005). Conclusion: Patients undergoing a VLCKD achieved superior weight loss, with significant VAT and liver fat fraction reductions when compared to the standard LC diet. The weight loss and rapid mobilization of liver fat demonstrated with VLCKD could serve as an effective alternative for the treatment of NAFLD. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common in people with obesity and is characterised by high amounts of fat stored in the liver. Diet and exercise are the standard treatments, however recent studies have indicated that the gut microbiota may have an important role. This randomised control trial of 140 patients with NAFLD, aimed to assess the effect of probiotics when added to standard therapy for 3 months. The results showed that although gut microbiota, some aspects of liver function, blood lipids and blood sugars were all improved in individuals on standard therapy, there were additional improvements in those on standard therapy plus probiotics. It was concluded that although standard therapy alone is adequate to improve NAFLD, probiotics plus standard therapy was superior to standard therapy alone and effective in treatment of NAFLD. This study could be used by health professionals to justify the addition of probiotics to standard therapy to further improve NAFLD outcomes.
Abstract
To investigate the effects of probiotics on liver function, glucose and lipids metabolism, and hepatic fatty deposition in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).Totally 140 NAFLD cases diagnosed in our hospital from March 2017 to March 2019 were randomly divided into the observation group and control group, 70 cases in each. The control group received the diet and exercise therapy, while the observation group received oral probiotics based on the control group, and the intervention in 2 groups lasted for 3 months. The indexes of liver function, glucose and lipids metabolism, NAFLD activity score (NAS), and conditions of fecal flora in 2 groups were compared before and after the treatment.Before the treatment, there were no significant differences on alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), glutamine transferase (GGT), total bilirubin (TBIL), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), NAFLD activity score (NAS), and conditions of fecal flora in 2 groups (P > .05). After the treatment, ALT, AST, GGT, TC, TG, HOMA-IR, NAS, and conditions of fecal flora in the observation group were better than those in the control group, and the observation group was better after treatment than before. All these above differences were statistically significant (P < .05).Probiotics can improve some liver functions, glucose and lipids metabolism, hepatic fatty deposition in patients with NAFLD, which will enhance the therapeutic effects of NAFLD.

Effective long-term weight loss strategies to reduce the risk of death and diseases associated with being obese or overweight are required, as restrictive programmes are difficult to sustain, and weight loss may be heavily influenced by behavioural factors. This randomised control trial of 101 premenopausal women with obesity or overweight aimed to compare a lower-fat and moderate-fat diets, both with nutrition education for 12 months. The results showed that both treatment groups lost weight. Both groups consumed the same amount of fat but increased their diet quality. Diet quality and greater attendance at nutritional education sessions were associated with greater weight loss. Cholesterol was significantly lower in both groups, but blood pressure remained unchanged. Interestingly there were a large number of women who did not complete the trial. It was concluded that irrespective of the amount of fat consumed, nutrition education can help to achieve sustained weight loss, improve diet quality and decrease heart disease risk for at least 12 months. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand that recommending fat-based targets for weight loss may be ineffective and the importance of emotional and behavioural support for individuals on a weight loss regime to improve their risk for heart disease.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare two energy-restricted, nutrient-dense diets at the upper or lower ends of the dietary fat recommendation range (lower fat [20% energy from fat] versus moderate fat [35%]) on weight loss using behavioral theory-based nutrition education. METHODS A total of 101 premenopausal women with overweight or obesity were randomized to an energy-restricted lower-fat or moderate-fat diet for 1 year. Interventions included 28 behavioral theory-based nutrition education sessions plus weekly exercise sessions. RESULTS Both treatment groups experienced weight loss (-5.0 kg for lower fat and -4.3 kg for moderate fat; P < 0.0001), but there was no difference in weight loss or fat intake between groups. Total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased (-3. 4 mg/dL and -3.8 mg/dL; P < 0.05), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased (1.9 mg/dL; P < 0.05) in both groups at 12 months. Diet quality, assessed by the Healthy Eating Index, increased significantly at 4 months versus baseline (70.8 [0.9] vs. 77.8 [1.0]) and was maintained through 12 months. Higher Healthy Eating Index scores were associated with greater weight loss at 4 months (r = -0.2; P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In the context of a well-resourced, free-living weight-loss intervention, total fat intake did not change; however, theory-based nutrition education underpinned by food-based recommendations resulted in caloric deficits, improvements in diet quality, and weight loss that was sustained for 1 year.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the longitudinal effect of smartphone-based health care app on metabolic parameters in a sample of the general population with moderate metabolic abnormalities. The study is a single-blind 3-arm parallel-design randomized controlled trial delivering a 6-month primary prevention program via mobile app. One hundred twenty-nine smartphone users, aged between 30-59 years with at least 2 metabolic abnormalities, have been recruited. Results showed that the simultaneous diet/exercise logging and lifestyle coaching yielded greater body weight reduction, specifically via body fat mass reduction. On the other hand, the systolic blood pressure did not change notably between the 3 groups at any follow-up examinations. Authors conclude that future studies focusing on comparative effectiveness using alternative study designs are needed to integrate these apps in everyday lives and clinic practice.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic disorders are established precursors to cardiovascular diseases, yet they can be readily prevented with sustained lifestyle modifications. OBJECTIVE We assessed the effectiveness of a smartphone-based weight management app on metabolic parameters in adults at high-risk, yet without physician diagnosis nor pharmacological treatment for metabolic syndrome, in a community setting. METHODS In this 3-arm parallel-group, single-blind, randomized controlled trial, we recruited participants aged 30 to 59 years with at least 2 conditions defined by the Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program expert panel (abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high fasting glucose level). Participants were randomly assigned (1:1:1) by block randomization to either the nonuser group (control), the app-based diet and exercise self-logging group (app only), or the app-based self-logging and personalized coaching from professional dieticians and exercise coordinators group (app with personalized coaching). Assessments were performed at baseline, week 6, week 12, and week 24. The primary outcome was change in systolic blood pressure (between baseline and follow-up assessments). Secondary outcomes were changes in diastolic blood pressure, body weight, body fat mass, waist circumference, homeostatic model of assessment of insulin resistance, triglyceride level, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level between baseline and follow-up assessments. Analysis was performed using intention-to-treat. RESULTS Between October 28, 2017 and May 28, 2018, 160 participants participated in the baseline screening examination. Participants (129/160, 80.6%) who satisfied the eligibility criteria were assigned to control (n=41), app only (n=45), or app with personalized coaching (n=43) group. In each group, systolic blood pressure showed decreasing trends from baseline (control: mean -10.95, SD 2.09 mmHg; app only: mean -7.29, SD 1.83 mmHg; app with personalized coaching: mean -7.19, SD 1.66 mmHg), yet without significant difference among the groups (app only: P=.19; app with personalized coaching: P=.16). Instead, those in the app with personalized coaching group had greater body weight reductions (control: mean -0.12, SD 0.30 kg; app only: mean -0.35, SD 0.36 kg, P=.67; app with personalized coaching: mean -0.96, SD 0.37 kg; P=.08), specifically by body fat mass reduction (control: mean -0.13, SD 0.34 kg; app only: mean -0.64, SD 0.38 kg, P=.22; app with personalized coaching: mean -0.79, SD 0.38 kg; P=.08). CONCLUSIONS Simultaneous diet and exercise self-logging and persistent lifestyle modification coaching were ineffective in lowering systolic blood pressure but effective in losing weight and reducing body fat mass. These results warrant future implementation studies of similar models of care on a broader scale in the context of primary prevention. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a Diabetes Prevention Programme-based lifestyle modification program focused on overweight/obese Saudi adults with impaired fasting glucose. This study is a 12-month two-arm randomized controlled (1:1) lifestyle intervention. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either an intensive lifestyle modification program or general advice at the time of recruitment. Results showed that participants following the intensive lifestyle modification program had significant changes in body weight, body mass index and glycaemic indices post-intervention. Authors conclude that for Saudi adults with impaired fasting glucose, a self-monitoring-based lifestyle intervention may be a significant tool for weight loss and to reverse to normoglycemia [normal concentration of sugar in the blood].
Abstract
This 12-month, randomized, controlled lifestyle intervention study was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of a lifestyle intervention in terms of (1) the reduction of at least 5% of body weight compared to baseline and (2) the percentage of participants in which fasting blood glucose (FBG) normalizes (<5.6 mmol/L) post-intervention, in predominantly overweight/obese Saudi adults with impaired fasting glucose. A total of 300 Saudi adults with prediabetes at baseline (FBG 5.6-6.9 mmol/L) were enrolled to receive either general advice (GA) or a rigorous, self-monitored, lifestyle modification program (intervention group, IG) for 12 months, focused on food choices, physical activity, and weight loss. Anthropometric and biochemical estimations were analyzed at baseline, 6, and 12 months. At baseline, 136/150 in the GA group (90.7%) and 127/150 in the IG group (84.7%) were either overweight or obese. A total of 14% (n = 21) of the subjects in the IG arm discontinued, compared to 8% (n = 12) in the GA arm. Data from completers (92% (n = 138) and 86% (n= 129) participants in GA and IG arms, respectively) were considered for the final analysis. Post-intervention, 37.2% (n = 48) of participants in the IG group had ≥5% weight reduction, as compared to 12.3% (n = 17) in the GA group (p < 0.01). Similarly, the percentage of participants who normalized their FBG post-intervention was 46.5% (n = 60) in the IG group compared to 21.7% (n = 30) in the GA group (p < 0.01). A 12-month Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)-styled intensive lifestyle program translated effectively in decreasing weight and improving fasting glucose compared to the GA group in predominantly overweight/obese Saudi adults with prediabetes, suggesting that in the case of guided intervention programs, people are willing to participate and possibly change a sedentary lifestyle.

Restriction of sugar intake is among the most commonly advocated public health strategies, as it is believed to prevent the development of chronic diseases. Unlike sugar, honey has been shown to have various positive health benefits from increasing antioxidant status to lowering postprandial [after a meal] glycaemia and insulinaemia in healthy subjects when compared to responses of more highly refined sugar mixtures. The aim of this study was to assess responses to both short-term (1 week) and relatively long-term (1 month) ingestion of clover honey consumption versus sucrose on changes in dietary intake and serum lipid concentrations in young to middle-aged adults. This study is a crossover design randomised controlled study for which 40 participants were recruited (male [n = 21] and female [n = 19]) with an age range between 25 and 57 years. Results indicate that consumption of clover honey (1.2 g of carbohydrate per kilogram body weight) for up to 1 month produced modestly positive dietary and triglyceride effects compared to sucrose. - there were no positive lipid effects within the clover honey trial. - compared to sucrose, clover honey consumption resulted in a significantly lower intake of energy, carbohydrate, sugars and fat as well as lower triglycerides concentrations at the end of 4 weeks. Authors conclude that honey produces limited, modest health benefits relative to sucrose. Future studies are needed to investigate the possible mechanisms by which honey influences triglyceride production and/or clearance and the metabolic and hormonal regulators of food intake.
Abstract
Consumption of added sugars in the US is estimated to be approximately 1.5 times recommended levels and has been linked to increased risk for developing chronic diseases. We hypothesized that relative to sugar, honey would reduce energy intake and improve serum lipid profiles. To test this, we assessed the short-term (1-week) and relatively long-term (1-month) effects of honey versus sucrose on changes in dietary intake and serum lipid concentrations. Thirty-seven apparently healthy subjects (21 males; 16 females) aged 24-57 years (BMI = 17.6-37.2 kg/m2) completed two 4-week trials in a randomized, cross-over design separated by ≥4-week washout. During each trial, subjects consumed either clover honey or sucrose providing 1.2 g/kg/day of carbohydrate under free-living conditions with instructions to avoid changing their habitual food intake. Serum triglyceride (TG) concentrations were elevated (P < .05) after 1 week for both trials but only remained elevated (P < .05) at the 4-week time-point during sucrose consumption. The elevation after 1 week during the honey trial was concurrent with a transient increase (P < .05) in body weight. No effects on serum concentrations of insulin, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, or high density lipoprotein-cholesterol were detected for either trial. Subjects consumed significantly less energy (P < .05), carbohydrate (P < .005), sugars (P < .05), and saturated fat (P < .05) during the honey trial. These data suggest that honey may serve as a favorable substitute for sucrose with regard to reduced energy intake, carbohydrate and sugars, without negatively influencing serum lipid concentrations.

Menopause is the absence of menstruation due to the loss of ovarian activity with ageing. During this transition period, changes in hormones, primarily the decline in the oestrogen estradiol, give rise to altered lipid metabolism. An unfavourable lipid profile presents a risk for metabolic disorders, such as cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Post-menopausal changes also lead to shifts in body fat and fat distribution, resulting in an increased tendency for central fat accumulation and obesity. Obesity is associated with insulin resistance. This susceptibility for weight accumulation is possibly also driven by the age-associated decline in skeletal muscle, which reduces metabolic energy expenditure. This review summarizes the physiology of menopause and postmenopause and the consequential impact on lipid metabolism. In addition, there is a discussion of dietary recommendations, nutritional and plant-derived compounds that could support the management of menopause associated changes in lipid levels, metabolic risk factors and obesity. The recommendations discussed include traditional healthy diets and low-calorie diets, with attention drawn to adequate protein intake. Furthermore, the role of probiotics, nutritional and plant-sourced constituents are considered, including Vitamin D, Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants like Vitamin A, β-carotene, Vitamin C and E, genistein, resveratrol, flavonoids, indoles and capsaicin. The authors advocate sourcing these compounds from a varied whole-foods diet, which would minimize nutrient interactions and absorption issues that can occur with supplementation. This review may be of interest to those supporting the nutritional needs of menopausal and post-menopausal women, that are experiencing or are at risk of experiencing metabolic disorders.
Abstract
Menopause is clinically diagnosed as a condition when a woman has not menstruated for one year. During the menopausal transition period, there is an emergence of various lipid metabolic disorders due to hormonal changes, such as decreased levels of estrogens and increased levels of circulating androgens; these may lead to the development of metabolic syndromes including cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Dysregulation of lipid metabolism affects the body fat mass, fat-free mass, fatty acid metabolism, and various aspects of energy metabolism, such as basal metabolic ratio, adiposity, and obesity. Moreover, menopause is also associated with alterations in the levels of various lipids circulating in the blood, such as lipoproteins, apolipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and triacylglycerol (TG). Alterations in lipid metabolism and excessive adipose tissue play a key role in the synthesis of excess fatty acids, adipocytokines, proinflammatory cytokines, and reactive oxygen species, which cause lipid peroxidation and result in the development of insulin resistance, abdominal adiposity, and dyslipidemia. This review discusses dietary recommendations and beneficial compounds, such as vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, phytochemicals-and their food sources-to aid the management of abnormal lipid metabolism in postmenopausal women.

A plant-based diet (PBD) has been shown to benefit cardiovascular health. However previous research has reported incidences of gout, questioning its safety in certain individuals. Previous studies have mainly focused on the outcomes of short-term changes to a PBD. This study aimed to determine the effects of a whole- food PBD (WFPBD) on cardiovascular health in the short, medium and long-terms. This cross-sectional study split 151 healthy adults depending on how long they had followed a PBD. The results showed that regardless of the amount of time on a WFPBD, markers for cardiovascular health are improved. Long-term PBD (5-10 years) in women was associated with significantly lower LDL-cholesterol, which is a cholesterol that can increase heart attack risk. Significant improvements to blood pressure were also observed in women but again this was not time dependent. Indicators of gout development were not significant, although they were raised in a small number of participants. It was concluded that regardless of time, a WFPBD may be associated with long-term cardiovascular health. This study could be used by practitioners to recommend a WFPBD to healthy individuals who would like to reduce their cardiovascular risk. However, caution should be taken in individuals with gout.
Abstract
An effective lifestyle strategy to reduce cardiovascular diseases risk (CVD) factors is needed. We examined the effects of a whole-food plant-based (WFPB) lifestyle program on dietary intake and cardiovascular (CV) risk factors in 151 adults (mean 39.6 (SD 12.5) years). Adherence was categorised into short-, medium- and long-term (years: (0.5-<2), (2-<5) and (5-10)), for both genders separately. Dietary intakes were assessed, fasting blood lipids and blood pressure (BP) were measured, and % participants reaching guideline recommended targets for LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and BP in the primary CVD prevention was assessed. There were no statistically significant differences in intakes of energy and most nutrients among participants (both genders), that were short-, medium- and long term in our program. Diet was mainly composed of unprocessed vegetables/fruits, whole grains, legumes, potatoes, and nuts/seeds. LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, systolic and diastolic BP were within targets for: 93%, 97%, 88% and 95% participants, respectively. In females (vs. males), total- and HDL-cholesterol were higher (mean): 3.8 (SD 0.7) vs. 3.4 (SD 0.9), p = 0.002 and 1.5 (SD 0.3) vs. 1.1 (SD 0.2) mmol/L, p < 0.001), systolic BP was lower (113 (SD 11) vs. 120 (SD 10) mmHg, p = 0.001), while there was no difference in diastolic BP (71 (SD 9) vs. 72 (SD 8) mmHg, p = 0.143). More females vs. males reached target triglycerides (99% vs. 91%, p = 0.021) and systolic BP (92% vs. 79%, p = 0.046), while similar females and males reached target LDL-cholesterol (94% vs. 91%, p = 0.500) and diastolic BP (93% vs. 100%, p = 0.107). Participation in our WFPB lifestyle program is associated with favourable dietary intakes, safety markers, and CV risk factor profiles.
