Body weight regulation and obesity are highly influenced by several factors such as genetics, physiology, and socioeconomic factors. The aim of this study was to elucidate the association of meal timing with anthropometry body composition and cardiometabolic risk factors in young adults. This study was a cross-sectional study of 118 young adults (n=82 women). Results showed that meal timing is not related to anthropometry or body composition parameters in young adults. Similarly, caloric midpoint, eating jetlag and the time from last food intake to midsleep point are not associated with cardiometabolic risk factors. However, a longer daily eating window and a shorter time from midsleep point to first food intake (i.e., earlier first food intake in a 24 h cycle) are associated with a healthier cardiometabolic profile in young men. Authors concluded that eating early in alignment with circadian rhythms may improve cardiometabolic health.
Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the association of meal timing with body composition and cardiometabolic risk factors in young adults. METHODS In this cross-sectional study participated 118 young adults (82 women; 22 ± 2 years old; BMI: 25.1 ± 4.6 kg/m2). Meal timing was determined via three non-consecutive 24-h dietary recalls. Sleep outcomes were objectively assessed using accelerometry. The eating window (time between first and last caloric intake), caloric midpoint (local time at which ≥ 50% of daily calories are consumed), eating jetlag (variability of the eating midpoint between non-working and working days), time from the midsleep point to first food intake, and time from last food intake to midsleep point were calculated. Body composition was determined by DXA. Blood pressure and fasting cardiometabolic risk factors (i.e., triglycerides, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and insulin resistance) were measured. RESULTS Meal timing was not associated with body composition (p > 0.05). The eating window was negatively related to HOMA-IR and cardiometabolic risk score in men (R2 = 0.348, β = - 0.605; R2 = 0.234, β = - 0.508; all p ≤ 0.003). The time from midsleep point to first food intake was positively related to HOMA-IR and cardiometabolic risk score in men (R2 = 0.212, β = 0.485; R2 = 0.228, β = 0.502; all p = 0.003). These associations remained after adjusting for confounders and multiplicity (all p ≤ 0.011). CONCLUSIONS Meal timing seems unrelated to body composition in young adults. However, a longer daily eating window and a shorter time from midsleep point to first food intake (i.e., earlier first food intake in a 24 h cycle) are associated with better cardiometabolic health in young men. Obesity is linked to premature brain ageing and subsequent development of diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Weight loss through lifestyle modifications may be able to attenuate brain ageing. This sub-study of 102 individuals from a randomised control trial known as the Dietary Intervention Randomised Controlled Trial Polyphenols Unprocessed Study (DIRECT-PLUS), aimed to determine the effect of 18 months lifestyle modifications and weight loss on brain age. The results showed that a decrease in BMI attenuated brain ageing and that 1% body weight loss reduced brain ageing by 8.9 months. Reduced brain age was also associated with decreased waist circumference and fat mass. Interestingly, reduced consumption of processed foods was also associated with reduced brain age. It was concluded that weight loss can be of benefit to brain health. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand that people with obesity are at a higher risk of brain related diseases, and that weight loss may be an effective way to prevent their development.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity negatively impacts multiple bodily systems, including the central nervous system. Retrospective studies that estimated chronological age from neuroimaging have found accelerated brain aging in obesity, but it is unclear how this estimation would be affected by weight loss following a lifestyle intervention. METHODS In a sub-study of 102 participants of the Dietary Intervention Randomized Controlled Trial Polyphenols Unprocessed Study (DIRECT-PLUS) trial, we tested the effect of weight loss following 18 months of lifestyle intervention on predicted brain age based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-assessed resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC). We further examined how dynamics in multiple health factors, including anthropometric measurements, blood biomarkers, and fat deposition, can account for changes in brain age. RESULTS To establish our method, we first demonstrated that our model could successfully predict chronological age from RSFC in three cohorts (n=291;358;102). We then found that among the DIRECT-PLUS participants, 1% of body weight loss resulted in an 8.9 months' attenuation of brain age. Attenuation of brain age was significantly associated with improved liver biomarkers, decreased liver fat, and visceral and deep subcutaneous adipose tissues after 18 months of intervention. Finally, we showed that lower consumption of processed food, sweets and beverages were associated with attenuated brain age. CONCLUSIONS Successful weight loss following lifestyle intervention might have a beneficial effect on the trajectory of brain aging. Obesity is linked with the brain aging faster than would normally be expected. Researchers are able to capture this process by calculating a person’s ‘brain age’ – how old their brain appears on detailed scans, regardless of chronological age. This approach also helps to monitor how certain factors, such as lifestyle, can influence brain aging over relatively short time scales. It is not clear whether lifestyle interventions that promote weight loss can help to slow obesity-driven brain aging. To answer this question, Levakov et al. studied 102 individuals who met the criteria for obesity and took part in a lifestyle intervention aimed to improve diet and physical activity levels over 18 months. The participants received a brain scan at the beginning and the end of the program; additional tests and measurements were also conducted at these times to capture other biological processes impacted by obesity, such as liver health. Levakov et al. used the brain scans taken at the start and end of the study to examine the impact of the lifestyle intervention on the aging trajectory. The results revealed that a reduction in body weight of 1% led to the participants’ brain age being nearly 9 months younger than the expected brain age after 18 months. This attenuated aging was associated with changes in other biological measures, such as decreased liver fat and liver enzymes. Increases in liver fat and production of specific liver enzymes were previously shown to negatively impact brain health in Alzheimer’s disease. Finally, examining more closely the food consumption reports completed by participants showed that reduced consumption of processed food, sweets and beverages were linked to attenuated brain aging. The findings show that lifestyle interventions which promote weight loss can have a beneficial impact on the aging trajectory of the brain observed with obesity. The next steps will include determining whether slowing down obesity-driven brain aging results in better clinical outcomes for patients. In addition, the work by Levakov et al. demonstrates a potential strategy to evaluate the success of lifestyle changes on brain health. With global rates of obesity rising, identifying interventions that have a positive impact on brain health could have important clinical, educational and social impacts.

Postmenopausal women are at a higher risk of obesity due to lower levels of oestrogen, which acts to protect the body against fat storage. Resistance training is recommended for healthy ageing in postmenopausal women. It can be of benefit for fitness and prevent chronic disease. This systematic review and meta-analysis of 20 randomised control trials aimed to determine the effects of low (44 sets per week) and high volume (77 sets per week) resistance training on body fat, inflammation, and risk for metabolic disease in postmenopausal women. The results showed that regardless of whether postmenopausal women undertook high or low volume resistance training, total body fat, fat around the middle, metabolic risk, and inflammation were improved compared to not undertaking any resistance training at all. High volume resistance training had a greater benefit than low volume resistance exercise to blood sugar levels and a certain measure of inflammation known as C-reactive protein. It was concluded that resistance training is effective for improving measures of body fat, inflammation, and metabolic risk in postmenopausal women. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to recommend resistance training to postmenopausal women as part of a fat loss programme and to reduce risk of metabolic disease.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE This meta-analytical study explored the effects of resistance training (RT) volume on body adiposity, metabolic risk, and inflammation in postmenopausal and older females. METHODS A systematic search was performed for randomized controlled trials in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO. Randomized controlled trials with postmenopausal and older females that compared RT effects on body adiposity, metabolic risk, and inflammation with a control group (CG) were included. Independent reviewers selected the studies, extracted the data, and performed the risk of bias and certainty of the evidence (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE)) evaluations. Total body and abdominal adiposity, blood lipids, glucose, and C-reactive protein were included for meta-analysis. A random-effects model, standardized mean difference (Hedges' g), and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were used for meta-analysis. RESULTS Twenty randomized controlled trials (overall risk of bias: some concerns; GRADE low to very low) with overweight/obese postmenopausal and older females were included. RT groups were divided into low-volume RT (LVRT, ∼44 sets/week) and high-volume RT (HVRT, ∼77 sets/week). Both RT groups presented improved body adiposity, metabolic risk, and inflammation when compared to CG. However, HVRT demonstrated higher effect sizes than LVRT for glucose (HVRT = -1.19; 95%CI: -1.63 to -0.74; LVRT = -0.78; 95%CI:-1.15 to -0.41) and C-reactive protein (HVRT = -1.00;95%CI: -1.32 to -0.67; LVRT = -0.34;95%CI, -0.63 to -0.04)) when compared to CG. CONCLUSION Compared to CG, HVRT protocols elicit greater improvements in metabolic risk and inflammation outcomes than LVRT in overweight/obese postmenopausal and older females.

Dietary patterns based on the substitution of meals made with unprocessed or minimally processed foods for the consumption of ultra-processed items can be partly blamed for the exponential global growth in the incidence of obesity. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a nutritional intervention based on encouraging the consumption of unprocessed and minimally processed foods rather than ultra-processed products. This study is a two-armed parallel randomised controlled trial conducted among overweight, pregnant women receiving prenatal care in seven primary health units. Participants (n=350) were randomly allocated into the intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). The women allocated into the IG, in addition to the usual prenatal care, were invited to participate in three individualised nutritional counselling sessions conducted by trained nutritionists. Results show that even though there were more women in the IG who had increased their daily intake of minimally processed foods and vegetables at lunch time when compared to the CG, this was not statistically significant. Additionally, there weren’t any differences between the groups in relation to physical activity. Authors conclude that their study was unprecedented in demonstrating that a nutritional counselling intervention based on the NOVA food classification system, together with the practice of physical activity, is effective in preventing excessive gestational weight gain in overweight pregnant women.
Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of a nutritional counselling intervention based on encouraging the consumption of unprocessed and minimally processed foods, rather than ultra-processed products, and the practice of physical activities to prevent excessive gestational weight gain in overweight pregnant women. METHODS This was a two-armed, parallel, randomized controlled trial conducted in primary health units of a Brazilian municipality from 2018 to 2021. Overweight, adult pregnant women (n = 350) were randomly assigned to control (CG) or intervention groups (IG). The intervention consisted of three individualized nutritional counselling sessions based on encouraging the consumption of unprocessed and minimally processed foods rather than ultra-processed products, following the NOVA food classification system, and the practice of physical activities. The primary outcome was the proportion of women whose weekly gestational weight gain (GWG) exceeded the Institute of Medicine guidelines. Adjusted logistic regression models were employed. RESULTS Complete data on weight gain were available for 121 women of the IG and 139 of the CG. In modified intention-to-treat analysis, there was a lower chance of the IG women having excessive GWG [OR 0.56 (95% CI 0.32, 0.98), p = .04], when compared to the CG. No between-group differences were observed for the other maternal outcomes investigated. CONCLUSION The present study was unprecedented in demonstrating that nutritional counselling based on the NOVA food classification system, together with encouraging the practice of physical activity, is effective in preventing excessive weight gain in overweight pregnant women. Short sleep duration, defined as less than 6 hours/night, is associated with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Sleep restriction causes metabolic and behavioural changes suggesting that short sleep duration may contribute to the development of obesity. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between short sleep duration or poor sleep quality and weight regain after weight loss. This study is based on data from the S-LiTE randomised, controlled trial. Participants followed a low-calorie diet (800 kcal/day) for eight weeks prior to randomisation. Those who lost at least 5% of initial weight were randomised to the control or intervention group. Results showed that participants with objectively measured short sleep duration after a diet-induced weight loss had less success during weight loss maintenance than those with longer sleep duration. Worse sleep quality was associated with less weight loss during a low-calorie diet and subsequent weight maintenance. Authors conclude that insufficient sleep predicts weight regain during interventional efforts to maintain weight loss. Exercise maintained low-calorie diet-induced improvements in sleep quality during 1 year of weight loss maintenance, and liraglutide transiently increased sleep duration.
Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Insufficient sleep may attenuate weight loss, but the role of sleep in weight loss maintenance is unknown. Since weight regain after weight loss remains a major obstacle in obesity treatment, we investigated whether insufficient sleep predicts weight regain during weight loss maintenance. METHODS In a randomized, controlled, two-by-two factorial study, 195 adults with obesity completed an 8-week low-calorie diet and were randomly assigned to 1-year weight loss maintenance with or without exercise and liraglutide 3.0 mg/day or placebo. Sleep duration and quality were measured before and after the low-calorie diet and during weight maintenance using wrist-worn accelerometers (GENEActiv) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). To test associations between insufficient sleep and weight regain, participants were stratified at randomization into subgroups according to sleep duration (≥6 h/night) or sleep quality (PSQI score ≤/>5). RESULTS After a diet-induced 13.1 kg weight loss, participants with short sleep duration at randomization regained 5.3 kg body weight (p = .0008) and had less reduction in body fat percentage compared with participants with normal sleep duration (p = .007) during the 1-year weight maintenance phase. Participants with poor sleep quality before the weight loss regained 3.5 kg body weight compared with good quality sleepers (p = .010). During the weight maintenance phase, participants undergoing liraglutide treatment displayed increased sleep duration compared with placebo after 26 weeks (5 vs. -15 min/night) but not after 1 year. Participants undergoing exercise treatment preserved the sleep quality improvements attained from the initial weight loss. CONCLUSIONS Short sleep duration or poor sleep quality was associated with weight regain after weight loss in adults with obesity.

Effective interventions for obesity involve multiple components that combine educational, environmental, and behavioural strategies to promote healthy eating and physical activity. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies, such as smartphone apps and wearable devices, have been used widely as promising strategies to enhance the effectiveness of weight loss interventions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of combining weight management apps with health coaching on clinical outcomes among people with overweight and obesity. This study was a systematic review and meta-analysis of fourteen studies. The included studies represent 2478 participants with a mean age of 39.1 years. Results did not show any evidence of improvement in physical activity related to the use of smartphone apps with or without health coaching. Furthermore, combining smartphone apps with health coaching only yields a significantly greater reduction in waist circumference but not weight loss as compared to using a self-monitoring app alone. Authors conclude that combined intervention could improve weight-related outcomes, but more research is needed to examine its added benefits to using an app.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-monitoring smartphone apps and health coaching have both individually been shown to improve weight-related outcomes, but their combined effects remain unclear. OBJECTIVE This study aims to examine the effectiveness of combining self-monitoring apps with health coaching on anthropometric, cardiometabolic, and lifestyle outcomes in people with overweight and obesity. METHODS Relevant articles published from inception till June 9, 2022, were searched through 8 databases (Embase, CINAHL, PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, The Cochrane Library, and Web of Science). Effect sizes were pooled using random-effects models. Behavioral strategies used were coded using the behavior change techniques taxonomy V1. RESULTS A total of 14 articles were included, representing 2478 participants with a mean age of 39.1 years and a BMI of 31.8 kg/m2. Using combined intervention significantly improved weight loss by 2.15 kg (95% CI -3.17 kg to -1.12 kg; P<.001; I2=60.3%), waist circumference by 2.48 cm (95% CI -3.51 cm to -1.44 cm; P<.001; I2=29%), triglyceride by 0.22 mg/dL (95% CI -0.33 mg/dL to 0.11 mg/dL; P=.008; I2=0%), glycated hemoglobin by 0.12% (95% CI -0.21 to -0.02; P=.03; I2=0%), and total calorie consumption per day by 128.30 kcal (95% CI -182.67 kcal to -73.94 kcal; P=.003; I2=0%) kcal, but not BMI, blood pressure, body fat percentage, cholesterol, and physical activity. Combined interventional effectiveness was superior to receiving usual care and apps for waist circumference but only superior to usual care for weight loss. Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are two of the most common chronic diseases and lifestyle modification, including diet, exercise and weight management, are recognised as important for prevention. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has been shown to contribute to lifestyle modification. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the effect of CBT, compared to no intervention/standard care only, in patients with obesity and/or T2DM, with a focus on health outcomes and implementation of changes long-term. Nine randomised controlled trials (RCT) with 902 participants were included in this meta-analysis. The health outcomes included weight loss and maintenance and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c, a measure of blood glucose control) whilst the lifestyle changes included diet, physical activity, smoking, and compliance with treatments. There was a statistically significant benefit of CBT for weight loss and weight maintenance (based on 3 RCTs each) with a medium effect size, but no significant effect on HbA1c (based on 3 RCTs). In all 3 RCTs that evaluated depression, a significant benefit was observed. As the behavioural outcomes were too heterogenous to be pooled for a meta-analysis, they were reviewed in a descriptive manner only. Benefits were reported in terms of better dietary choices/reduced energy intake, increased physical activity, better adherence to medication and glucose monitoring as well as a reduction in smoking. The authors suggest that CBT appears to be moderately effective in promoting lifestyle modifications and weight loss.
Abstract
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the contribution of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to the implementation of lifestyle changes, considering health-related and behavioral outcomes. A systematic literature review was performed using multiple databases (PsycInfo, PubMed and MEDLINE). The inclusion criteria comprised randomised controlled trials of CBT for lifestyle changes in patients with obesity and/or type 2 diabetes. The quality of study reporting was assessed with the revised Cochrane Collaboration's risk of bias tool. A meta-analysis was conducted on studies with appropriate outcomes. Nine randomised controlled trials, with a total sample size of 902 participants, met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis has shown a medium, significant effect size of CBT interventions for weight loss and weight maintenance, and a low, non-significant effect size of CBT interventions for reducing glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. A separate, combined, meta-analysis for all nine calculated effect sizes has yielded a medium and significant overall effect size for the model. Our review of the studies about the effectiveness of CBT in implementing lifestyle changes has, in comparison to usual control groups, proven the efficacy of CBT interventions in implementing lifestyle changes, especially for weight loss and weight maintenance.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the main cause of chronic liver disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in the microbiota associated with changes in biochemical markers of NAFLD/NASH after an intervention. This substudy was conducted in the frame of the PREDIMED-Plus study, a 6-year, multicentre, randomised clinical trial for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) conducted in men aged 55–75 years and women aged 60–75 years with overweight or obesity and metabolic syndrome. Results showed a relationship between liver disease biochemical indexes changes and gut microbiota changes within a context of a Mediterranean lifestyle. In fact, two noninvasive scores for liver steatosis and liver fibrosis, usually used in clinical practice, could differentiate gut microbiota populations. Authors conclude that their findings highlight the importance of lifestyle intervention in the modulation of gut microbiota and the management of metabolic syndrome and its hepatic manifestations.
Abstract
To evaluate the changes in the gut microbiota associated with changes in the biochemical markers of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) after a lifestyle intervention with the Mediterranean diet. Participants (n = 297) from two centers of PREDIMED-Plus trial (Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea) were divided into three different groups based on the change tertile in the Hepatic Steatosis Index (HSI) or the Fibrosis-4 score (FIB-4) between baseline and one year of intervention. One-year changes in HSI were: tertile 1 (T1) (-24.9 to -7.51), T2 (-7.5 to -1.86), T3 (-1.85 to 13.64). The most significant differences in gut microbiota within the year of intervention were observed in the T1 and T3. According to the FIB-4, participants were categorized in non-suspected fibrosis (NSF) and with indeterminate or suspected fibrosis (SF). NSF participants showed higher abundances of Alcaligenaceae, Bacteroidaceae, Bifidobacteriaceae, Clostridiaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Peptostreptococcaceae, Verrucomicrobiaceae compared to those with SF. Then, participants were divided depending on the FIB-4 tertile of change: T1 (-89.60 to -5.57), T2 (-5.56 to 11.4), and T3 (11.41 to 206.24). FIB-4 T1 showed a decrease in Akkermansia and an increase in Desulfovibrio. T2 had an increase in Victivallaceae, Clostridiaceae, and Desulfovibrio. T3 showed a decrease in Enterobacteriaceae, and an increase in Sutterella, Faecalibacterium, and Blautia. A relation between biochemical index changes of NAFLD/NASH (HSI and FIB-4) and gut microbiota changes were found. These observations highlight the importance of lifestyle intervention in the modulation of gut microbiota and the management of metabolic syndrome and its hepatic manifestations. The aim of this study was to determine whether, compared with placebo, vitamin D3 supplementation (4000 IU/day) taken prior to and during a 12-week exercise program improves physical function, body composition or metabolic health, in overweight or obese older adults with vitamin D deficiency. This study is a 24-week parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot randomised controlled trial. Fifty overweight or obese participants were enrolled for the study, and randomised to either 4000 IU/day of oral vitamin D3 or identical placebo. Results demonstrated that 4000 IU/day vitamin D3 supplementation: - did not affect gait speed when taken with or without exercise, - helped achieve optimal serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and decreased waist circumference (compared with placebo) following multi-modal exercise. - taken alone without exercise reduced stair climb times. However, vitamin D3 supplementation did not have any beneficial effects on other biochemical, body composition or physical function parameters when taken alone or during exercise. Authors conclude that future studies should focus on populations with moderate or severe vitamin D deficiency as they are more likely to experience therapeutic benefits from vitamin D supplementation.
Abstract
PURPOSE Vitamin D supplementation may have non-skeletal health benefits and enhance exercise responsiveness, particularly in those with low vitamin D levels. We determined whether, compared with placebo, vitamin D supplementation taken prior to and during a 12-week exercise program improves physical function, body composition or metabolic health, in overweight and obese older adults with vitamin D deficiency. METHODS Fifty overweight or obese older adults (mean ± SD age: 60 ± 6 years; BMI 30.6 ± 5.7 kg/m2) with vitamin D deficiency (25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] < 50 nmol/L) were recruited. Participants were randomly allocated to receive either vitamin D3 (4000 IU/day) or matching placebo for 24 weeks. Between weeks 12 and 24, all participants completed multi-modal exercise three days per week while continuing with vitamin D/placebo. Mean changes in physical function (primary outcome: gait speed), body composition and biochemical parameters at weeks 12 and 24 were compared between groups. RESULTS Vitamin D supplementation, with or without exercise, had no effect on gait speed. From baseline to week 12, vitamin D supplementation increased serum 25(OH)D levels (placebo: 2.5 ± 14.7 nmol/L; treatment: 43.4 ± 18.4 nmol/L; P < 0.001) and reduced stair climb times (placebo: 0.3 ± 1.0 s; treatment: - 0.2 ± 1.0 s; P = 0.046). From 12 to 24 weeks, vitamin D supplementation combined with exercise decreased waist circumference (placebo: 1.3 ± 7.3 cm; treatment: - 3.0 ± 6.1 cm; P = 0.02) and waist-to-hip ratio (placebo: 0.01 ± 0.05; treatment: - 0.03 ± 0.05; P = 0.01) relative to placebo. Vitamin D supplementation, with or without exercise, had no effect on other physical function, body composition or metabolic health outcomes. CONCLUSION Vitamin D supplementation had no effect on most physical function, body composition or metabolic health parameters when taken alone, or during exercise, in overweight or obese older adults with vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D-related improvements in stair climb times and waist circumference suggest that future trials should explore the effects of vitamin D on muscle power, and its effects on body composition when combined with exercise, in populations with moderate or severe vitamin D deficiency.

The aim of this study was to assess the acute effects of morning and evening cycling exercise on appetite, post-exercise ad-libitum energy intake, substrate metabolism, voluntary performance, and subjective responses to exercise, in young, healthy males and females. Sixteen healthy participants (eight males and eight females) were recruited to the study. Each participant completed two preliminary trials, followed by two experimental trials which involved exercising at 10:30 or 18:30. Results show that: - post-exercise energy intake was greater after acute cycling exercise performed in the evening compared to the morning, despite no post-exercise differences in subjective appetite. - there wasn’t any difference in exercise performance between morning and evening exercise. - exercise timing did not affect performance during a 15-min all-out performance test. Authors conclude that their findings demonstrate a disconnect between subjective appetite and ad-libitum energy intake but provide some evidence that exercise can offset circadian-related appetite profiles.
Abstract
Exercise is an important component of a weight management strategy. However, little is known about whether circadian variations in physiological and behavioural processes can influence the appetite and energy balance responses to exercise performed at different times of the day. This study compared the effects of morning and evening exercise on appetite, post-exercise energy intake, and voluntary performance. In randomised, counterbalanced order, 16 healthy males and females (n = 8 each) completed two trials, performing morning exercise at 10:30 (AMEx) or evening exercise at 18:30 (PMEx). Exercise consisted of 30 min steady-state cycling (60% V˙ O2peak), and a 15-min performance test. A standardised meal (543 ± 86 kcal) was consumed 2-h before exercise and ad-libitum energy intake was assessed 15 min after exercise, with subjective appetite measured throughout. Absolute ad-libitum energy intake was 152 ± 126 kcal greater during PMEx (P < 0.001), but there was no differences in subjective appetite between trials immediately pre-exercise, or immediately before the post-exercise meal (P ≥ 0.060). Resting energy expenditure (P < 0.01) and carbohydrate oxidation (P < 0.05) were greater during AMEx, but there were no differences in substrate oxidation or energy expenditure during exercise (P ≥ 0.155). Exercise performance was not different between trials (P = 0.628). In conclusion, acute morning and evening exercise prompt similar appetite responses, but post-exercise ad-libitum energy intake is greater following evening exercise. These findings demonstrate discordant responses between subjective appetite and ad-libitum energy intake but suggest that exercise might offset circadian variations in appetite. Longer-term studies are required to determine how exercise timing affects adherence and weight management outcomes to exercise interventions. TRIAL REGISTRATION NCT04742530, February 8, 2021.
