The aim of this review was to explore the possible association between ethnicity, incidence and outcomes of COVID-19 using both recent COVID-19 studies and studies of previous pandemics. Findings show that: - ethnic minorities have lower lung function compared to their Caucasian counterparts. - Black, Asian and Minority Ethnics communities are prone to higher rates of cardiovascular disease and are subject to adverse healthcare disparities. - ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected, and experience worse health outcomes compared to other groups. They are also more likely to be socioeconomically disadvantaged compared to white communities. - Africans are at a higher risk of receiving later and more indigent healthcare compared to other ethnic groups. Authors conclude that data on ethnicity should be routinely collected by governments to robustly determine magnitude of association. In addition, governments should also recommend strategies to mitigate risks on minority ethnicities due to socioeconomic disadvantages.
Abstract

Recently, concerns have been raised about possible association between ethnicity, incidence and outcomes of COVID-19 arisen from early government data. In this review, we will explore the possible association using both recent COVID-19 studies and studies of previous pandemics. We call for data on ethnicity to be routinely collected by governments, as part of an international collaboration, alongside other patient demographics and further research to robustly determine the magnitude of association. Moreover, governments must learn from previous pandemics and recommended strategies to mitigate risks on minority ethnicities due to socioeconomic disadvantages.

Food packages with nutrient warnings are increasingly being produced to promote healthier eating. However, better understanding is needed to see how these affect consumer behaviour. This scoping review summarises evidence for randomised control trials on how behaviour is affected by nutrient package warnings and what the trials are assessing to determine this. The results included 22 studies which showed that studies focused on positive outcomes such as attention, comprehension, and behavioural intentions, but not behavioural change, negative effects, or social interactions. Amongst the studies nutrient warnings were attention grabbing, easy to understand, and discouraged buying, however why this is the case was left unexplained. It was concluded that front of package warnings are easy to understand and discouraged buying, however further studies are needed to determine negative effects.
Abstract
Policies that require front-of-package (FoP) nutrient warnings are becoming increasingly common across the globe as a strategy to discourage excess consumption of sugary drinks and ultra-processed food. However, a better understanding of the pathway through which FoP nutrient warnings work, as well as a review of how outcomes being measured in recent studies map onto this pathway, are needed in order to inform policy on the most effective FoP label design for reducing purchases of ultra-processed foods. This scoping review describes a conceptual model for how FoP nutrient warnings affect consumer behavior, examines which of these outcomes are currently being measured, and summarizes evidence from randomized controlled experiments. Twenty-two studies which experimentally tested nutrient warnings against a control label or other labeling systems were included for full-text review. Our conceptual model includes attention; comprehension, cognitive elaboration, and message acceptance; negative affect and risk perception; behavioral intentions, and behavioral response, along with other elements such as external factors and interpersonal communications. We found that many studies focused on outcomes such as attention, comprehension, and behavioral intentions, but considerable gaps in the evidence remain, particularly for intermediary steps on the pathway to behavioral change, such as negative affect and social interactions. FoP nutrient warnings were visually attended to by consumers, easy to understand, helped consumers identify products high in nutrients of concern, and discouraged them from purchasing these products, although other labeling systems were perceived as containing more information and performed better at helping consumers rank the healthfulness of products. More research is needed to understand whether and how nutrient warnings work in the real world to discourage consumer purchases of sugary drinks and ultra-processed food.

This review of recent studies, aimed to investigate the relationship between an imbalanced gut microbiome and depression. The authors first looked at the epidemiology of disease, concluding that significant burden needs to be assessed through improved preventative measures. This will depend upon the correct identification of risk factors, and the study focused on the role of the gut microbiome in this through animal and human studies. Imbalances in inflammation through altered gut microbiota, depleted biodiversity and stress induced microbiome changes were all implicated in the development of depression. It was concluded that studies on the role of microbiota in depression remain promising but are small and follow many different methodologies. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to better understand the role of gut microbiota in the development of depression and that ensuring a healthy gut may improve symptoms.
Abstract
The human gut microbiome partakes in a bidirectional communication pathway with the central nervous system (CNS), named the microbiota-gut-brain axis. The microbiota-gut-brain axis is believed to modulate various central processes through the vagus nerve as well as production of microbial metabolites and immune mediators which trigger changes in neurotransmission, neuroinflammation, and behavior. Little is understood about the utilization of microbiome manipulation to treat disease. Though studies exploring the role of the microbiome in various disease processes have shown promise, mechanisms remain unclear and evidence-based treatments for most illnesses have not yet been developed. The animal studies reviewed here offer an excellent array of basic science research that continues to clarify mechanisms by which the microbiome may affect mental health. More evidence is needed, particularly as it relates to translating this work to human subjects. The studies presented in this paper largely demonstrate encouraging results in the treatment of depression. Limitations include small sample sizes and heterogeneous methodology. The exact mechanism by which the gut microbiota causes or alters neuropsychiatric disease states is not fully understood. In this review, we focus on recent studies investigating the relationship between gut microbiome dysbiosis and the pathogenesis of depression. This article is based on previously conducted studies and does not contain any studies with human participants or animals performed by any of the authors.

Therefore the aim of this review was to determine the role of the gut microbiome in mental health and depression. A total of 26 articles were reviewed and based on these articles, a strong link exists between the gut microbiome and its impact on mental health. Additionally, the literature supports the notion that the gut-brain axis serves as an essential pathway. Based on these findings, the authors agree there is a strong association between the gut microbiome and mental health, while also acknowledging the need to establish a causal link between these two entities. The authors conclude that the microbiome is a promising approach when considering the prevention, treatment and management of mental health diseases in the future.
Abstract
The gut microbiome serves an important role in the human body. Reportedly, one of the benefits of these microflora is on mental health. Once established, food and other dietary sources that enhance quality microbiome content in our gastrointestinal system will be a significant consideration in individuals' day to day lives. This literature review conducted a PubMed search for studies about the gut microbiome and its relation to depression. In using several Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) keywords, relevant literature was selected. A total of 26 articles were selected after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and after checking the articles' accessibility. This literature would like to establish the role of the gut microbiome in depression. This study's findings showed that there is a strong association of microbiome function to mental well-being.

A growing body of research suggests diet and mental health are closely connected through the microbiome-gut-brain axis (MGBA). This axis shows how the gut and brain are linked in a bidirectional relationship, and provides a model in which dietary interventions could help prevent, or be an alternative therapy, for depression and anxiety. While there is an increased understanding of the complex interplay between diet, gut microbiome and mental health, the literature has produced conflicting results. The aim of this review is to discuss possible reasons for the conflicting results on the link between diet and mental health and present the current findings. The authors explored the impact of various dietary components on the MGBA including macronutrient ratios, omega 3 fatty acids, prebiotic and probiotic foods, food additives, and whole diet approaches. The research shows mental health is likely to be influenced by the MGBA via changes in gut microbiota composition and function, but conflicting results and limited research elucidates the complexity in understand the extent of this bidirectional relationship. Based on the current findings, the authors suggest dietary patterns for positive mental health should be in support of a healthy gut microbiota. They conclude further research is needed into the mechanisms in which gut microbiota impacts mental health to pave the way for a holistic approach to preventing and treating anxiety and depression.
Abstract
There is emerging evidence that an unhealthy dietary pattern may increase the risk of developing depression or anxiety, whereas a healthy dietary pattern may decrease it. This nascent research suggests that dietary interventions could help prevent, or be an alternative or adjunct therapy for, depression and anxiety. The relation, however, is complex, affected by many confounding variables, and is also likely to be bidirectional, with dietary choices being affected by stress and depression. This complexity is reflected in the data, with sometimes conflicting results among studies. As the research evolves, all characteristics of the relation need to be considered to ensure that we obtain a full understanding, which can potentially be translated into clinical practice. A parallel and fast-growing body of research shows that the gut microbiota is linked with the brain in a bidirectional relation, commonly termed the microbiome-gut-brain axis. Preclinical evidence suggests that this axis plays a key role in the regulation of brain function and behavior. In this review we discuss possible reasons for the conflicting results in diet-mood research, and present examples of areas of the diet-mood relation in which the gut microbiota is likely to be involved, potentially explaining some of the conflicting results from diet and depression studies. We argue that because diet is one of the most significant factors that affects human gut microbiota structure and function, nutritional intervention studies need to consider the gut microbiota as an essential piece of the puzzle.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION As individuals age, the prevalence of neurocognitive and mental health disorders increases. Current biomedical treatments do not completely address the management of these conditions. Despite new pharmacological therapy the challenges of managing these diseases remain.There is increasing evidence that the Gut Microbiome (GM) and microbial dysbiosis contribute to some of the more prevalent mental health and neurocognitive disorders, such as depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BP), and dementia as well as the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) through the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Methodology: Scoping review about the effect of gut microbiota on neurocognitive and mental health disorders. RESULTS This scoping review found there is an evolving evidence of the involvement of the gut microbiota in the pathophysiology of neurocognitive and mental health disorders. This manuscript also discusses how the psychotropics used to treat these conditions may have an antimicrobial effect on GM, and the potential for new strategies of management with probiotics and faecal transplantation. CONCLUSIONS This understanding can open up the need for a gut related approach in these disorders as well as unlock the door for the role of gut related microbiota management. KEY MESSAGES Challenges of managing mental health conditions remain in spite of new pharmacological therapy. Gut dysbiosis is seen in various mental health conditions. Various psychotropic medications can have an influence on the gut microbiota by their antimicrobial effect.

The gut microbiome may have a role in regular brain function and mental health and this review paper aimed to determine the mechanisms through which this may be possible. There are several mental health disorders that may be affected by the gut microbiome, major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety disorder, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and addiction. It appears that there is a correlation between a disordered gut microbiome (known as dysbiosis) and MDD, ASD and addiction. Anxiety symptoms in healthy individuals and cognitive deficits in individuals with AD have reportedly been improved with probiotics. How the gut microbiome communicates with the brain was also discussed with the enteric nervous system, vagus nerve, spinal chord, immune system and brain signalling molecules all being implicated as possible routes. Finally, the paper discussed the use of probiotics for the prevention or treatment of mental disorders, with Bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus and specifically L. reuteri, L. plantarum and L. helveticus all shown in animal models to improve aspects associated with mental disorders. Amongst the human research B. longum has been shown to relieve stress and increase cognitive function in healthy individuals. It was concluded that studies have elucidated a relationship between the gut microbiome and mental health through various routes of communication. Research should focus on how gut microbiome changes are involved in mental illness. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to further knowledge on the potential relationship between the gut microbiome and mental health.
Abstract
Often called the second brain, the gut communicates extensively with the brain and vice versa. The conversation between these two organs affects a variety of physiological mechanisms that are associated with our mental health. Over the past decade, a growing body of evidence has suggested that the gut microbiome builds a unique ecosystem inside the gastrointestinal tract to maintain the homeostasis and that compositional changes in the gut microbiome are highly correlated with several mental disorders. There are ongoing efforts to treat or prevent mental disorders by regulating the gut microbiome using probiotics. These attempts are based on the seminal findings that probiotics can control the gut microbiome and affect mental conditions. However, some issues have yet to be conclusively addressed, especially the causality between the gut microbiome and mental disorders. In this review, we focus on the mechanisms by which the gut microbiome affects mental health and diseases. Furthermore, we discuss the potential use of probiotics as therapeutic agents for psychiatric disorders.

Depression is multifactorial disease and it is the most common type of psychiatric disorder. Literature indicates that there are significant differences between the gut microbiota (GM) of patients with depression and healthy controls. The aim of this review was to examine (a) various low-molecular compounds as potential biomarkers of depression in correlation with the metabolism of the GM, and (b) ways to correct the microbiota imbalance. Results show that: - the use of the GM biomarkers, reflecting the neuromodulatory [the process by which nervous activity is regulated through classes of neurotransmitters], immunomodulatory [the process by which the body’s immune system is altered] and antioxidant statuses of the host organism, in the analysis of metagenomic [the study of a collection of genetic material (genomes) from a mixed community of organisms] data from patients with neuropsychiatric diseases, is gaining currency. - diet remains one of the most effective measures that can be taken to restore the microbial balance in the gut and alleviate the symptoms of depression. - a healthy diet during the depression therapy, along with the application of probiotics and psychobiotics, may potentially improve the course of the disease and contribute to the progress of treatment. Authors conclude that further progress in the practical understanding of the role of the GM in depression will greatly depend on correct planning of future metagenomic studies.
Abstract
Depression is a global threat to mental health that affects around 264 million people worldwide. Despite the considerable evolution in our understanding of the pathophysiology of depression, no reliable biomarkers that have contributed to objective diagnoses and clinical therapy currently exist. The discovery of the microbiota-gut-brain axis induced scientists to study the role of gut microbiota (GM) in the pathogenesis of depression. Over the last decade, many of studies were conducted in this field. The productions of metabolites and compounds with neuroactive and immunomodulatory properties among mechanisms such as the mediating effects of the GM on the brain, have been identified. This comprehensive review was focused on low molecular weight compounds implicated in depression as potential products of the GM. The other possible mechanisms of GM involvement in depression were presented, as well as changes in the composition of the microbiota of patients with depression. In conclusion, the therapeutic potential of functional foods and psychobiotics in relieving depression were considered. The described biomarkers associated with GM could potentially enhance the diagnostic criteria for depressive disorders in clinical practice and represent a potential future diagnostic tool based on metagenomic technologies for assessing the development of depressive disorders.

The aim of this review is to summarize the role of gut hormones in the GBA and focus on how the microbiota interact with these hormones in health and disease. The literature shows the gut microbiota can affect the metabolism of various gut hormones, and these hormones can influence the microbiota. Evidence suggests this cross-talk may be a key regulator in appetite, immune response, stress response, and metabolism. Based on this review, the authors conclude the gut microbiota-hormone homeostatic relationship provides insight on the complex communication between the gut and the brain. They suggest future research should target the microbiota-hormones-gut-brain axis to develop new therapeutic strategies to psychiatric disorders.
Abstract
The homeostasis of the gut-brain axis has been shown to exert several effects on physiological and psychological health. The gut hormones released by enteroendocrine cells scattered throughout the gastrointestinal tract are important signaling molecules within the gut-brain axis. The interaction between gut microbiota and gut hormones has been greatly appreciated in gut-brain cross-talk. The microbiota plays an essential role in modulating many gut-brain axis-related diseases, ranging from gastrointestinal disorders to psychiatric diseases. Similarly, gut hormones also play pleiotropic and important roles in maintaining health, and are key signals involved in gut-brain axis. More importantly, gut microbiota can affect the release and functions of gut hormones. This review highlights the role of gut microbiota in the gut-brain axis and focuses on how microbiota-related gut hormones modulate various physiological functions. Future studies could target the microbiota-hormones-gut brain axis to develop novel therapeutics for different psychiatric and gastrointestinal disorders, such as obesity, anxiety, and depression.

This viewpoint article raises awareness of the threat of COVID-19 poses to psychiatric patients who are in mental health hospitals. Those patients appear to have a much elevated mortality rate and are potentially more vulnerable to the effects of panic/anxiety due to the pandemic. Their lifestyle choices, influenced by fears about the virus, may also have a negative effect on their immunity. The article also raises the issue of the effects the pandemic and associated changes to day-to-day life can have on the mental and general health of the rest of the population, and in particular to mental health professionals, whose ability to care for their psychiatric patients may be impaired. The authors also briefly discuss the psychological and immunological mechanisms that connect our mental state to the ability of our immune system to fight infections, and the impact of our lifestyles and environments. To summarise they state that infected patients, uninfected quarantined individuals and medical professionals all require mental health supporting strategies, and that epidemiological studies of potential long-term psychiatric consequences are essential.
Abstract
The worldwide outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) raises concerns of widespread panic and anxiety in individuals subjected to the real or perceived threat of the virus. Compared to general populations, patients who are institutionalized in a closed unit are also very vulnerable to COVID-19 infection and complications. This crisis touched on difficult issues of not only psychiatric care and ethics, but also psychological impacts to psychiatric care givers. In this Viewpoint, we address both physical and biopsychosocial aspects of this infection, as well as the psychoneuroimmunity of preventive strategies of healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, balanced nutrition, quality sleep and a strong connection with people. Social distancing and wearing masks might help us from pathogen exposure, yet such these measures also prevent us from expressing compassion and friendliness. Therefore, all forms of psychological support should be routinely implemented not only to consider psychological resilience but also to enhance psychoneuroimmunity against COVID-19.
