Sleep is essential to support the functions and health of the entire body. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between sleep duration and quality, and overweight risk and obesity in children and adults. The study was conducted on secondary school children. It involved 199 subjects of which 71 were adults (29 males and 42 females) with age between 29 and 65 years, and 128 children (73 males and 55 females) with age between 10 and 13 years. Results indicate that the duration and quality of sleep can represent a risk factor of overweight and obesity in examined subjects (both adults and children irrespective of their gender). Authors conclude that sufficient sleep is required to maintain a normal weight.
Abstract
The sleep allows many psychological processes, such as immune system activity, body metabolism and hormonal balance, emotional and mental health, learning, mnemonic processes. The lack of sleep could undermine mental and physical purposes, causing an alteration in cognitive functions or metabolic disorders. In our study, we have examined the irregular sleep effects with the overweight and obesity risk in children and adults.The sample was composed of 199 subjects, of which 71 adults, (29 males and 42 females), and 128 children (73 males and 55 females). We have measured the weight and height with standard techniques; we also have measured the body mass index dividing the weight in kg with the height square expressed in meters (kg/m). Subjects were divided into underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese. Were administered some questionnaires to measure the quantity and quality of sleep, and eating habits and individual consumption of food.Analysis of demographic variables not showed significant differences between male and female groups but highlighted a significant trend differences in normal-weight score. The clinical condition has a substantial impact on body mass index score and sleep hours were significant predictor on this.Quantity and quality sleep can also represent a risk factor of overweight and obesity, so sufficient sleep is a factor that influence a normal weight. Adults and children that sleep less, have an increase in obesity and overweight risk with dysfunctional eating behaviors, decreased physical activity, and metabolic changes.

Insufficient sleep is a risk factor for overweight and obesity. A number of maladaptive changes take place that promote increased intake and weight gain. The aim of this randomised crossover study was to examine the impact of sleep deprivation on hunger, food cravings, food reward and portion size among 24 healthy women. Participants were randomised to either one normal night sleep or curtailed night sleep, where time in bed was reduced by 33%. Crossover visits occurred two weeks apart. Sleep duration was measured through imaging and sleep quality, hunger, tiredness, and food cravings were observed through questionnaires. This study found an increase in hunger, food cravings, food reward and portion sizes after a night of sleep deprivation. Based on this study the authors conclude reduced sleep duration can lead to increased energy intake and therefore an increased risk of obesity.
Abstract
This study examined the effects of one night of sleep curtailment on hunger, food cravings, food reward, and portion size selection. Women who reported habitually sleeping 7⁻9 h per night, were aged 18⁻55, were not obese, and had no sleep disorders were recruited. Sleep conditions in this randomized crossover study consisted of a normal night (NN) and a curtailed night (CN) where time in bed was reduced by 33%. Hunger, tiredness, sleep quality, sleepiness, and food cravings were measured. A progressive ratio task using chocolates assessed the food reward. Participants selected portions of various foods that reflected how much they wanted to eat at that time. The sleep duration was measured using a single-channel electroencephalograph. Twenty-four participants completed the study. The total sleep time was shorter during the CN (p < 0.001). Participants reported increased hunger (p = 0.013), tiredness (p < 0.001), sleepiness (p < 0.001), and food cravings (p = 0.002) after the CN. More chocolate was consumed after the CN (p = 0.004). Larger portion sizes selected after the CN resulted in increased energy plated for lunch (p = 0.034). In conclusion, the present study observed increased hunger, food cravings, food reward, and portion sizes of food after a night of modest sleep curtailment. These maladaptive responses could lead to higher energy intake and, ultimately, weight gain.

Low bone mineral density (bone mineral content) and a diminution in bone quality (bone microarchitecture) are attributes of risk of fracture in people with osteopenia. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of feeding a milk protein-based matrix (MBPM) fortified with calcium and vitamin D prior to bedtime on the biomarkers of bone remodelling in postmenopausal women with osteopenia. The study is a block-randomised cross-over design which recruited a sample of 41 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 70 years. Out of the 24 participants classified as osteopenic, 16 volunteers progressed to the RCT and randomly assigned to receive either a milk-based protein supplement (MBPM) or an isoenergetic, control. Results indicate that a dairy-based protein supplement fortified with calcium (MBPM) fed at bedtime has a potent effect on nocturnal rates of bone resorption in healthy osteopenic postmenopausal women. Furthermore, the synergistic, pluripotent quality of a milk-based protein matrix and timing of ingestion to the nocturnal, peak rate of bone remodelling transiently depressed bone turnover. Authors conclude that a late-evening supplement of calcium-fortified milk protein affects a beneficial decrease in the homeostatic rate of bone remodelling in persons at risk of degenerative bone disease.
Abstract
The diurnal rhythm of bone remodeling suggests nocturnal dietary intervention to be most effective. This study investigated the effect of bedtime ingestion of a calcium-fortified, milk-derived protein matrix (MBPM) or maltodextrin (CON) on acute (0-4 h) blood and 24-h urinary change in biomarkers of bone remodeling in postmenopausal women with osteopenia. In CON, participants received 804 ± 52 mg calcium, 8.2 ± 3.2 µg vitamin D and 1.3 ± 0.2 g/kg BM protein per day. MBPM increased calcium intake to 1679 ± 196 mg, vitamin D to 9.2 ± 3.1 µg and protein to 1.6 ± 0.2 g/kg BM. Serum C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX) and procollagen type 1 amino-terminal propeptide (P1NP), and urinary N-telopeptide cross-links of type I collagen (NTX), pyridinoline (PYD) and deoxypyridinoline (DPD) was measured. Analyzed by AUC and compared to CON, a -32% lower CTX (p = 0.011, d = 0.83) and 24% (p = 0.52, d = 0.2) increase in P1NP was observed for MBPM. Mean total 24 h NTX excreted in MBPM was -10% (p = 0.035) lower than CON. Urinary PYD and DPD were unaffected by treatment. This study demonstrates the acute effects of bedtime ingestion of a calcium-fortified, milk-based protein matrix on bone remodeling.

Both sleep disruption and a low intake of fruit and vegetables (FV) are associated with higher rates of premature death and chronic disease. This review looked at previous studies in order to determine whether there is a link between sleep and FV consumption. A recent meta-analysis found that shorter sleep duration is consistently associated with low fruit and vegetable intake in children, but in adults the association is less clear. Studies looking at the effect of sleep on FV intake had variable results. Tart cherries and kiwi fruits were the most commonly studied fruits for their effect on sleep measures. Observational studies tended to find that both short- and long-sleepers tend to eat less FV than those that sleep for 7-8 hours. A lot of evidence shows that people who go to sleep later (‘owls’) tend to consume unhealthier diets with lower intakes of FV than people who go to bed earlier (‘larks’). The researchers also looked at potential mechanisms for the association between sleep and FV intake. Polyphenols in FV may influence sleep by increasing neurotransmitters via the gut-brain axis, improving energy metabolism and through alterations in circadian rhythms and the CLOCK genes. Ways in which disrupted sleep may affect FV consumption included changes in hunger hormones, emotional stress and impaired decision making. With further research, interactions between sleep measures and FV consumption may be clarified and potentially reduce the burden of chronic diseases and premature deaths.
Abstract
A substantial burden of disease and mortality globally is attributable to both sleep disruption and low intakes of fruit and vegetable (FV) and there is increasing mechanistic and epidemiological evidence to support a reciprocal relationship between the two. This review provides an overview of experimental and observational studies assessing the relations between sleep and FV consumption from 52 human adult studies. Experimental studies are currently limited and show inconsistent results. Observational studies support a non-linear association with adults sleeping the recommended 7-9 hours/day having the highest intakes of FV. The potential mechanisms linking sleep and FV consumption are highlighted. Disrupted sleep influences FV consumption through homeostatic and non-homeostatic mechanisms. Conversely, FV consumption may influence sleep through polyphenol content via several potential pathways. Few human experimental studies have examined the effects of FV items and their polyphenols on sleep and there is a need for more studies to address this. An appreciation of the relationship between sleep and FV consumption may help optimize sleep and FV consumption and may reduce the burden of chronic diseases. This review provides implications for public health and directions for future work.

Depression and type 2 diabetes (T2D) appear to have a bidirectional relationship, with the two diseases possibly being linked through emotional and biological changes. This review paper aimed to discuss this bidirectional relationship and in particular the biological changes that may be involved. The authors started by stating that two biological systems may be influenced in depression and T2D, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), which is responsible for many systems in the body involved in the stress response and emotional and physical health. The second is the brain-gut-microbiome axis (BGM), which is related to the microorganisms in the gut and how they communicate with the brain. The immune system, sleep and blood sugar balance may be influenced by the HPA and BGM and are all dysregulated in both depression and T2D indicating a link between the two diseases. However causal relationships need further research. Dietary and lifestyle changes may be of benefit in these individuals. It was concluded that the disruption of shared biological systems in T2D and depression may be an important target for treatments, however further research is warranted. This study could be used by healthcare practitioners to understand the relationship between T2D and depression and the potential therapeutic areas to target. However, although research is optimistic, it is still in its infancy.
Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of shared dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and brain-gut-microbiome (BGM) axes associated with depression and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Clinical implications and future research are also discussed. RECENT FINDINGS Both depression and T2D are associated with dysregulation of the HPA and BGM axes. These pathways regulate immune function, glucose metabolism, and sleep, which are altered in both illnesses. Dysregulation of homeostatic brain-body pathways may be positively influenced through different therapeutic actions, including psychotherapy, healthy eating, physical activity, sleep promotion, and certain anti-inflammatory or antidepressant medications. While the causal nature of the relationship between depression and T2D remains unclear, these conditions share dysregulation of homeostatic brain-body pathways that are central to mental and physical health. Better understanding of this dysregulation may provide opportunities for interventions that could benefit both conditions. Future research should examine the additive burden of depression and T2D on HPA and BGM dysregulation and better differentiate depression from emotional distress.

Obesity is one of the major global health problems. Melatonin is a hormone which regulates wakefulness, functions as an antioxidant and plays a role in the immune system. Previous research suggests that melatonin deficiency is associated with obesity. The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of melatonin on oxidative stress and levels of cell signalling proteins released by fat cells (adipokines) in obese patients on a calorie-restricted diet. Thirty obese patients were supplemented with a daily dose of 10 mg of melatonin or placebo for 30 days with a calorie-restricted diet. Blood levels of melatonin, adipokines and markers of oxidative stress were measured at baseline and after supplementation. Significant body weight reduction (7%) was observed only in the melatonin group. After melatonin supplementation, the adiponectin and omentin-1 levels and glutathione peroxidase activities statistically increased, whereas the malondialdehyde concentrations were reduced. In the placebo group, a significant rise in 4-hydroxynonenal and a drop in the melatonin concentrations were found. The results show evidence of increased oxidative stress accompanying calorie restriction. The authors concluded that melatonin supplementation facilitated body weight reduction, improved the antioxidant defence, and regulated adipokine secretion. The findings suggest that melatonin should be considered in the management of obesity.

The gut microbiota is the complex community of microorganisms that lives in the digestive tracts of humans. The main aim of this study is to summarise the role of gastrointestinal microbiota in fundamental physiological and pathophysiological processes and thereafter to understand and treat a range of stress and immune-related disorders. This review outlines the numerous complex relationships between gastrointestinal microbiota, stress and immune responses at the three critical stages of life The authors concluded that the evidence from this study suggests that resilience to stress and immune-related disorders and dysfunction of stress and immune systems may be dependent on the diversity and complexity of gastrointestinal microbiota. However, gut microbiota mediated relationship to stress and neuro-inflammation is still unconfirmed as previous studies mostly, have largely been, preclinical and further studies are warranted.
Abstract
There is a growing emphasis on the relationship between the complexity and diversity of the microorganisms that inhabit our gut (human gastrointestinal microbiota) and health/disease, including brain health and disorders of the central nervous system. The microbiota-gut-brain axis is a dynamic matrix of tissues and organs including the brain, glands, gut, immune cells and gastrointestinal microbiota that communicate in a complex multidirectional manner to maintain homeostasis. Changes in this environment can lead to a broad spectrum of physiological and behavioural effects including hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation, and altered activity of neurotransmitter systems and immune function. While an appropriate, co-ordinated physiological response, such as an immune or stress response are necessary for survival, a dysfunctional response can be detrimental to the host contributing to the development of a number of CNS disorders. In this review, the involvement of the gastrointestinal microbiota in stress-mediated and immune-mediated modulation of neuroendocrine, immune and neurotransmitter systems and the consequential behaviour is considered. We also focus on the mechanisms by which commensal gut microbiota can regulate neuroinflammation and further aim to exploit our understanding of their role in stress-related disorders as a consequence of neuroinflammatory processes.

Previous studies suggest that short sleep duration leads to increased caloric intake and a desire for high-fat foods, however the specific neural mechanisms explaining how sleep restriction modulates this response is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine whether a specific area of the brain is activated in response to unhealthy compared with healthy foods. 25 participants were included, all of which were normal weight and had normal sleeping patterns. Each participant was tested after five nights of either 4 or 9 hours in bed by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The test was performed while the participant was shown healthy and unhealthy food photos in the fasted state. This study found that after a period of restricted sleep compared with habitual sleep, unhealthy foods led to greater activation in brain regions associated with reward compared with healthy foods. This finding provides a model of neuronal mechanisms relating short sleep duration to obesity and cardio-metabolic risk factors and warrants further investigation.
Abstract
CONTEXT Sleep restriction alters responses to food. However, the underlying neural mechanisms for this effect are not well understood. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a neural system that is preferentially activated in response to unhealthy compared with healthy foods. PARTICIPANTS Twenty-five normal-weight individuals, who normally slept 7-9 h per night, completed both phases of this randomized controlled study. INTERVENTION Each participant was tested after a period of five nights of either 4 or 9 h in bed. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed in the fasted state, presenting healthy and unhealthy food stimuli and objects in a block design. Neuronal responses to unhealthy, relative to healthy food stimuli after each sleep period were assessed and compared. RESULTS After a period of restricted sleep, viewing unhealthy foods led to greater activation in the superior and middle temporal gyri, middle and superior frontal gyri, left inferior parietal lobule, orbitofrontal cortex, and right insula compared with healthy foods. These same stimuli presented after a period of habitual sleep did not produce marked activity patterns specific to unhealthy foods. Further, food intake during restricted sleep increased in association with a relative decrease in brain oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) activity observed in the right insula. CONCLUSION This inverse relationship between insula activity and food intake and enhanced activation in brain reward and food-sensitive centers in response to unhealthy foods provides a model of neuronal mechanisms relating short sleep duration to obesity.
