Growth, Yield and Biochemical Impact of Anti-transpirants on Sunflower Plant Grown under Water Deficit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Climate change affecting on weather in many different ways especially drought and temperature rise. This will drastically down plant production, if not start looking for another source to increase water productivity to cope up with water stress conditions. In this study efforts were conducted to interpret the use of anti-transpirants to conserving irrigation water, aiding plant survival under dry conditions and protecting plant against drought stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two field experiments were carried out during 2017 and 2018 successive growing summer seasons at the experimental farm of National Research Centre, Nubaria, El-Beheira Governorate, Egypt. Anti-transparent ,i.e., chitosan (100 and 150 mg L-1), calcium carbonate (5 and 10 g L-1), salicylic acid (200 and 300 mg L-1) were foliar sprayed on sunflower plants grown under two water levels (normal 100% and deficit 50%). RESULTS The results showed that water stress decreased growth criteria, photosynthetic pigments, osmoprotectants, yield components, oil and carbohydrate (%) as compared to 100% of irrigation requirements. Meanwhile, water deficit induced significant increases in (proline). Foliar treatments of sunflower plant with chitosan, calcium carbonate, salicylic acid increased growth criteria, yield components, photosynthetic pigments, total soluble sugars, proline and free amino acid as compared to control plant. Data also illustrated that, all used treatment improved seed yield, oil and carbohydrate% of sunflower plants. CONCLUSION Generally, it could be concluded that 10 g L-1 CaCO3 and 300 mg L-1 SA at 50% level of water irrigation could be recommended for sunflower plant grown under similar field conditions in order to get optimum yield and to save irrigation water.

Effect of adding B-vitamins to vitamin D and calcium supplementation on CpG methylation of epigenetic aging markers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM B-vitamins may influence DNA methylation. We studied the effects of vitamin D + Ca + B versus D + Ca on epigenetic age markers and biological age. METHODS AND RESULTS Participants (mean ± SD of age = 68.4 ± 10.1 years) were randomized to receive 1200 IE vitamin D3 plus 800 mg Ca-carbonate alone (n = 31) or with 0.5 mg B9, 50 mg B6, and 0.5 mg B12 (n = 32). The CpG methylation of 3 genes (ASPA, ITGA2B, and PDE4C) and the changes in methylation were compared between the groups after 1 year. The changes of ASPA methylation from baseline were higher in the D + Ca + B than in the D + Ca group (1.40 ± 4.02 vs. -0.96 ± 5.12, respectively; p = 0.046, adjusted for age, sex, and baseline methylation). The changes in PDE4C from baseline were slightly higher in the D + Ca + B group (1.95 ± 3.57 vs. 0.22 ± 3.57; adjusted p = 0.062). Methylation of ITGA2B and its changes from baseline were not different between the intervention groups. Sex-adjusted odds ratio of accelerated aging (chronological age < biological age at 1 year) was 5.26 (95% confidence interval 1.51-18.28) in the D + Ca + B compared with the D + Ca group. Accelerated aging in both groups was associated with younger age. In the D + Ca + B group, it was additionally associated with lower baseline homocysteine. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D + Ca + B and D + Ca differentially affected epigenetic age markers, although the effect size appeared to be small after 1 year. B-vitamins effect in young subjects with low homocysteine requires further investigation. ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT02586181.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite adverse effects such as constipation, vascular calcification, and hypercalcemia, calcium-based salts are relatively affordable and effective phosphate binders that remain in widespread use in the dialysis population. We conducted a pilot study examining whether the use of a combined magnesium/calcium-based binder was as effective as calcium carbonate at lowering serum phosphate levels in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. METHODS This was a cross-over, investigator-masked pilot study in which prevalent PD patients received calcium carbonate alone (200 mg calcium per tablet) or calcium magnesium carbonate (100 mg calcium, 85 mg magnesium per tablet). Primary outcome was serum phosphate level at 3 months. Analysis was as per protocol. RESULTS Twenty patients were recruited, 17 completed the study. Mean starting dose was 11.35 ± 7.04 pills per day of MgCaCO3 and 9.00 ± 4.97 pills per day of CaCO3. Mean phosphate levels fell from 2.13 mmol/L to 2.01 mmol/L (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.76 - 2.30, p = 0.361) in the MgCaCO3 group, and 1.81 mmol/L (95% CI: 1.56 - 2.0, p = 0.026) in the CaCO3 alone group. Six (35%) patients taking MgCaCO3 and 9 (54%) taking CaCO3 alone achieved Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) serum phosphate targets at 3 months. Diarrhea developed in 9 patients taking MgCaCO3 and 3 taking CaCO3. Serum magnesium exceeded 1.4 mmol/L in 5 patients taking MgCaCO3 while serum calcium exceeded 2.65 mmol/L in 3 patients receiving CaCO3. When compared to the initial dose, the prescribed dose at 3 months was reduced by 44% (to 6.41 tablets/day) in the MgCaCO3 group and by 8% (to 8.24 pills per day) in the CaCO3 alone group. CONCLUSION Compared with CaCO3 alone, the preparation and dose of MgCaCO3 used in this pilot study was no better at lowering serum phosphate levels in PD patients, and was associated with more dose-limiting side effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bariatric surgery, especially Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, can cause serious nutritional complications arising from poor absorption of essential nutrients. Secondary hyperparathyroidism is one such complications that leads to increased parathyroid hormone levels due to a decrease in calcium and vitamin D, which may compromise bone health. AIM: To compare calcium carbonate and calcium citrate in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism. METHOD Patients were selected on the basis of their abnormal biochemical test and treatment was randomly done with citrate or calcium carbonate. RESULTS After 60 days of supplementation, biochemical tests were repeated, showing improvement in both groups. CONCLUSION Supplementation with calcium (citrate or carbonate) and vitamin D is recommended after surgery for prevention of secondary hyperparathyroidism.

[Comparison of the therapeutic effect on skeletal fluorosis and impact on urine fluoride value among fire needle therapy, electroacupuncture and calcium carbonate D3].

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the impacts on skeletal fluorosis pain, joint motor dysfunction and urine fluoride excretion in the treatment with fire needle therapy, electroacupuncture and calcium carbonate D3. METHODS The randomized controlled trial was adopted. Ninety-five patients were randomized into a fire needle group (31 cases), an electroacupuncture group (33 cases) and a calcium carbonate D3 group (31 cases). In the fire needle group and the electroacupuncture group, Ashi points, Dazhui (GV 14), Geshu (BL 17), Quchi (LI 11), Hegu (LI 4), Xuehai (SP 10) points were selected and stimulated with fire needle and electroacupuncture separately, three times a week. In the calcium carbonate D3 group, calcium carbonate D3 tablets was prescribed for oral administration, 600 mg each time, twice a day. The duration of treatment was 2 months in the electroacupuncture group and calcium carbonate D3 group and 1 month in the fire needle group. VAS score, the range of motion (ROM) and urine fluoride value were compared before and after treatment in the patients of the three groups. RESULTS After treatment, VAS value and ROM were improved significantly in the patients of the three groups (all P < 0.05), the difference was not significant in comparison of the three groups (all P > 0.05). After treatment, the urine fluoride value was increased significantly in the fire needle group [(7.89 +/- 3.61) mg/L vs (9.81 +/- 4.17) mg/L, P < 0.01] and was increased in the electroacupuncture group [(7.53 +/- 3.46) mg/L vs (8.97 +/- 4.21) mg/L, P < 0.05]. The difference was not significant in comparison before and after treatment in the calcium carbonate D3 group (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION The fire needle therapy, electroacupuncture and calcium carbonate D3 all have the clinical value in the prevention and treatment of skeletal fluorosis and the difference in the therapeutic effect has not been discovered among them yet at present. But it has been found that the fire needle therapy and electroacupuncture display the active significance in the promotion of urine fluoride excretion.

Lanthanum carbonate delays progression of coronary artery calcification compared with calcium-based phosphate binders in patients on hemodialysis: a pilot study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Coronary artery calcification (CAC) is associated with future cardiovascular events and/or death of patients on hemodialysis (HD). We investigated whether progression of CAC in patients on HD could be delayed by switching from a calcium (Ca)-based phosphate (Pi) binder to lanthanum carbonate. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, AND MEASUREMENTS The CAC scores were evaluated at study enrollment and after 6 months in 52 patients on HD using calcium carbonate (CC) as a Pi binder. Patients were randomly divided into 2 groups assigned to receive either CC or lanthanum carbonate (LC), and the CAC scores were evaluated after a 6-month treatment period. Progression of CAC was assessed, as were serum levels of Ca, Pi, and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH). RESULTS Forty-two patients completed the study (23 receiving CC and 19 receiving LC). In the 6 months prior to randomization, all patients were treated with CC. During this 6-month period, the CAC scores increased significantly in all 42 patients. Once randomized, there was significantly less progression in the group treated with LC than with CC. Changes in CAC scores from 6 to 12 months were significantly smaller in the LC group than the CC group (-288.9 ± 1176.4 vs 107.1 ± 559.6, P = .036), and percentage changes were also significantly different (-6.4% vs 41.2%, P = .024). Serum Ca, Pi, and iPTH levels were similar in both groups during the study period. CONCLUSIONS This pilot study suggested that LC delayed progression of CAC in patients on HD compared with CC.

Comparison of sevelamer and calcium carbonate on endothelial function and inflammation in patients on peritoneal dialysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperphosphataemia is a known independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality. The objective of the study was to compare the effects of two phosphate binders, sevelamer carbonate and calcium carbonate on endothelial function (EF) and inflammation in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS Fifteen subjects with hyperphosphataemia discontinued all phosphate binders to undergo a two-week washout and were assigned to sevelamer carbonate or calcium carbonate treatments for eight weeks. After a second two-week washout period, subjects crossed over to either of the alternate treatments for another eight weeks. At the beginning and end of each treatment, biomarkers of EF, pro-inflammatory cytokines, serum albumin, calcium, phosphate and lipids were measured. RESULTS Sevelamer carbonate significantly improved lipid profile compared with calcium carbonate. Amongst the EF and pro-inflammatory biomarkers, sevelamer carbonate decreased serum endothelin-1, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, C-reactive protein and interleukin-6. Both phosphate binders were effective in decreasing serum phosphate but sevelamer had a positive effect on EF. CONCLUSIONS Treatment with sevelamer carbonate has beneficial effects compared with calcium carbonate in decreasing inflammation and improving EF in patients with T2DM on PD.

Effect of desensitising paste containing 8% arginine and calcium carbonate on biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans in vitro.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of desensitising paste containing 8% arginine and calcium carbonate (Ar-Ca) on biofilm formation on dentine. METHODS Dentine discs were cut from extracted third molars and divided into the following three groups: no treatment, pumice treatment and Ar-Ca treatment. Surface topography and roughness were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and non-contact 3D surface profiler. After sterilisation, samples were incubated with Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) for 4 h, 24 h and 72 h. Bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation were analysed using SEM, whereas MTT and lactic acid production assays were used to analyse the metabolic activity of S. mutans. RESULTS After polishing with either pumice or Ar-Ca, the surfaces of the samples became smoother than in the control group. The Ra values of the three experimental groups decreased significantly to 0.43 μm, 0.3 μm and 0.26 μm, respectively. Compared to the control group, fewer bacteria adhered to the dentine surface in the Ar-Ca group, while biofilm thickness decreased significantly for both groups after incubating for 24 h and 72 h. MTT and lactic acid production levers also showed a significant reduction in the Ar-Ca group. CONCLUSIONS Ar-Ca appears to present antibiofilm efficacy and may provide a promising approach to combat bacterial infection in hypersensitive dentinal lesions. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE As a clinical application of desensitising polishing paste, the paste containing 8% arginine and calcium carbonate could also inhibit the biofilm formation effectively.

Sevelamer versus calcium carbonate in incident hemodialysis patients: results of an open-label 24-month randomized clinical trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether the use of sevelamer rather than a calcium-containing phosphate binder improves cardiovascular (CV) survival in patients receiving dialysis remains to be elucidated. STUDY DESIGN Open-label randomized controlled trial with parallel groups. SETTINGS & PARTICIPANTS 466 incident hemodialysis patients recruited from 18 centers in Italy. INTERVENTION Study participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 fashion to receive either sevelamer or a calcium-containing phosphate binder (although not required by the protocol, all patients in this group received calcium carbonate) for 24 months. OUTCOMES All individuals were followed up until completion of 36 months of follow-up or censoring. CV death due to cardiac arrhythmias was regarded as the primary end point. MEASUREMENTS Blind event adjudication. RESULTS At baseline, patients allocated to sevelamer had higher serum phosphorus (mean, 5.6 ± 1.7 [SD] vs 4.8 ± 1.4 mg/dL) and C-reactive protein levels (mean, 8.8 ± 13.4 vs 5.9 ± 6.8 mg/dL) and lower coronary artery calcification scores (median, 19 [IQR, 0-30] vs 30 [IQR, 7-180]). At study completion, serum phosphate levels were lower in the sevelamer arm (median dosages, 4,800 and 2,000 mg/d for sevelamer and calcium carbonate, respectively). After a mean follow-up of 28 ± 10 months, 128 deaths were recorded (29 and 88 due to cardiac arrhythmias and all-cause CV death). Sevelamer-treated patients experienced lower CV mortality due to cardiac arrhythmias compared with patients treated with calcium carbonate (HR, 0.06; 95% CI, 0.01-0.25; P < 0.001). Similar results were noted for all-cause CV mortality and all-cause mortality, but not for non-CV mortality. Adjustments for potential confounders did not affect results. LIMITATIONS Open-label design, higher baseline coronary artery calcification burden in calcium carbonate-treated patients, different mineral metabolism control in sevelamer-treated patients, overall lower than expected mortality. CONCLUSIONS These results show that sevelamer compared to a calcium-containing phosphate binder improves survival in a cohort of incident hemodialysis patients. However, the better outcomes in the sevelamer group may be due to better phosphate control rather than reduction in calcium load.

The effect of phosphate binders, calcium and lanthanum carbonate on FGF23 levels in chronic kidney disease patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent publications show that elevation of FGF23 is independently associated with progression or renal disease, left ventricular hypertrophy and cardiovascular mortality. Dietary restriction of phosphate and phosphate binders are used for control phosphate balance and elevation of serum FGF23 levels. The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of calcium carbonate vs. lanthanum carbonate in reducing serum FGF23 levels in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients. METHODS 32 patients from the Nephrology outpatient clinic with CKD 4 - 5 non-dialysis were included. Patients receive a 4-month treatment period of calcium carbonate or lanthanum carbonate. Patients had normal serum calcium concentration, 25 (OH) levels >30 ng/ml and they were not on VDR activators or cinacalcet. RESULTS As compared with calcium carbonate, patients on lanthanum carbonate had lower serum levels of FGF23 (226 ± 11 vs. 158 ± 9 pg/ml) and less urinary excretion of phosphate. No significant changes in serum calcium and PTH levels were observed in both groups. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, in CKD 4 - 5 patients lanthanum carbonate is effective in reducing phosphate load and FGF23 levels; this effect was not observed with calcium carbonate.
