Diet modification has long been recognised as a component for the treatment of diabetes. Diets low in carbohydrates have been extensively researched, as a diet for those with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the effect of low carbohydrate diets on T2D. The systematic review found 23 studies, including 1357 individuals, investigating the role of low carbohydrate diets on T2D outcomes. Low carbohydrate diet was defined as less than 130g of carbohydrate (less than 26% of calories from carbohydrate) for at least 12 weeks. Results reported at 6 months, found low carbohydrate diets were more effective than a normal diet at achieving diabetes remission. However, this effect diminished at 12 months, although longer term improvements were seen in blood lipids, weight loss and measures of prediabetes. It was concluded that individuals with T2D, eating a low carbohydrate diet for 6 months may reverse the disease. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to recommend a short-term low carbohydrate diet to individuals with T2D, to improve their chance of going into remission.

Clinical practice applications:

Results may not be sustained at 12 months.
Considerations for future research:

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the efficacy and safety of low carbohydrate diets (LCDs) and very low carbohydrate diets (VLCDs) for people with type 2 diabetes. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES Searches of CENTRAL, Medline, Embase, CINAHL, CAB, and grey literature sources from inception to 25 August 2020. STUDY SELECTION Randomized clinical trials evaluating LCDs (<130 g/day or <26% of a 2000 kcal/day diet) and VLCDs (<10% calories from carbohydrates) for at least 12 weeks in adults with type 2 diabetes were eligible. DATA EXTRACTION Primary outcomes were remission of diabetes (HbA1c <6.5% or fasting glucose <7.0 mmol/L, with or without the use of diabetes medication), weight loss, HbA1c, fasting glucose, and adverse events. Secondary outcomes included health related quality of life and biochemical laboratory data. All articles and outcomes were independently screened, extracted, and assessed for risk of bias and GRADE certainty of evidence at six and 12 month follow-up. Risk estimates and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using random effects meta-analysis. Outcomes were assessed according to a priori determined minimal important differences to determine clinical importance, and heterogeneity was investigated on the basis of risk of bias and seven a priori subgroups. Any subgroup effects with a statistically significant test of interaction were subjected to a five point credibility checklist. RESULTS Searches identified 14 759 citations yielding 23 trials (1357 participants), and 40.6% of outcomes were judged to be at low risk of bias. At six months, compared with control diets, LCDs achieved higher rates of diabetes remission (defined as HbA1c <6.5%) (76/133 (57%) v 41/131 (31%); risk difference 0.32, 95% confidence interval 0.17 to 0.47; 8 studies, n=264, I2=58%). Conversely, smaller, non-significant effect sizes occurred when a remission definition of HbA1c <6.5% without medication was used. Subgroup assessments determined as meeting credibility criteria indicated that remission with LCDs markedly decreased in studies that included patients using insulin. At 12 months, data on remission were sparse, ranging from a small effect to a trivial increased risk of diabetes. Large clinically important improvements were seen in weight loss, triglycerides, and insulin sensitivity at six months, which diminished at 12 months. On the basis of subgroup assessments deemed credible, VLCDs were less effective than less restrictive LCDs for weight loss at six months. However, this effect was explained by diet adherence. That is, among highly adherent patients on VLCDs, a clinically important reduction in weight was seen compared with studies with less adherent patients on VLCDs. Participants experienced no significant difference in quality of life at six months but did experience clinically important, but not statistically significant, worsening of quality of life and low density lipoprotein cholesterol at 12 months. Otherwise, no significant or clinically important between group differences were found in terms of adverse events or blood lipids at six and 12 months. CONCLUSIONS On the basis of moderate to low certainty evidence, patients adhering to an LCD for six months may experience remission of diabetes without adverse consequences. Limitations include continued debate around what constitutes remission of diabetes, as well as the efficacy, safety, and dietary satisfaction of longer term LCDs. Globally, consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has risen in most middle- or high-income countries and gradually displaced fresh and minimally processed foods. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and dose–response meta-analysis (of 7 studies) to determine if UPF intake is associated with mortality risk. Results indicate that UPF consumption was associated with an elevated risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease-cause mortality, and heart-cause mortality. However, there was no association between UPF consumption and cancer-cause mortality. Authors conclude that future studies should also investigate whether ultra-processing indices can demonstrate an association between diet and mortality compared with other nutritional quality scores/indices.
Abstract
We performed a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of observational studies assessing the association between UPF consumption and adult mortality risk. A systematic search was conducted using ISI Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE, and Scopus electronic databases from inception to August 2021. Data were extracted from seven cohort studies (totaling 207,291 adults from four countries). Using a random-effects model, hazard ratios (HR) of pooled outcomes were estimated. Our results showed that UPF consumption was related to an enhanced risk of all-cause mortality (HR = 1.21; 95% CI: 1.13, 1.30; I2 = 21.9%; p < 0.001), cardiovascular diseases (CVDs)-cause mortality (HR = 1.50; 95% CI: 1.37, 1.63; I2 = 0.0%; p < 0.001), and heart-cause mortality (HR = 1.66; 95% CI: 1.50, 1.85; I2 = 0.0%; p = 0.022), but not cancer-cause mortality. Furthermore, our findings revealed that each 10% increase in UPF consumption in daily calorie intake was associated with a 15% higher risk of all-cause mortality (OR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.21; I2 = 0.0%; p < 0.001). The dose-response analysis revealed a positive linear association between UPF consumption and all-cause mortality (Pnonlinearity = 0.879, Pdose-response = p < 0.001), CVDs-cause mortality (Pnonlinearity = 0.868, Pdose-response = p < 0.001), and heart-cause mortality (Pnonlinearity = 0.774, Pdose-response = p < 0.001). It seems that higher consumption of UPF is significantly associated with an enhanced risk of adult mortality. Despite this, further experimental studies are necessary to draw a more definite conclusion.

The growing incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases such as type two diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the major healthcare concern worldwide. The aim of this study was to build on previous work by synthesizing the findings of observational studies investigating the association between ultra-processed food (UPF) intake and the risk of T2DM. This study is a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of five studies. Of the five included studies, four were prospective cohort study designs and the other was cross-sectional. Results demonstrate that higher UPF intake was associated with an increased risk of T2DM. Additionally, increasing the intake of processed foods by 10% leads to a 15% increase in the risk of T2DM. A linear positive association was found between UPF intake and the risk of T2DM. Authors conclude by pointing out that to be able to estimate better the actual burden of UPF intakes, new tools should be adapted or progressed to evaluate all UPF consumption dimensions, namely food class, UPF foods specific components, their effects on health and specific processes or additives.
Abstract
(1) Background: Recent individual studies have demonstrated that consumption of ultra-processed food (UPF) may be related to type two diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We aimed to synthesize the results from these individual studies by conducting an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies evaluating the association between UPF consumption and the risk of T2DM. (2) Methods: A systematic search was conducted using ISI Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus electronic databases from inception up to August 2021. Data were extracted from five studies (one cross-sectional study and four cohort studies, totaling 230,526 adults from four different countries). Risk ratios (RR) of pooled results were estimated using a random-effects model. (3) Results: Our results revealed that higher UPF consumption was significantly associated with an increased risk of T2DM (RR = 1.74; 95% CI: 1.36, 2.22; I2 = 68.9%; p < 0.001; n = 5). Linear dose-response analysis indicated that each 10% increase in UPF consumption (kcal/d) was associated with a 15% higher risk of T2DM (RR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.26; I2 = 86.0%; p < 0.001; n = 5) among adults. Non-linear dose-response analysis demonstrated a positive linear association between UPF consumption and T2DM (pnonlinearity = 0.13, pdose-response < 0.001; n = 5) among adults. (4) Conclusions: A higher intake of UPF was significantly associated with an increased risk of T2DM. However, underlying mechanisms remain unknown and future experimental studies are warranted.

Chlordane is a synthetic organochlorine pesticide used for several decades in agriculture, but also in housing for pest control. Chlordane compounds are endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which means that they may affect the natural function of hormones by blocking, mimicking, displacing, or acting to subvert their roles. The aim of this study was to investigate whether exposure to chlordane compounds increases the risk of adiposity and diabetes in humans. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 31 publications. Results demonstrate that there is no association between chlordane compounds and adiposity. However, there are higher odds of having diabetes-related features with increasing levels of all the chlordane compounds evaluated. Authors conclude that an international agreement on methods to measure both exposure and outcome variables and to conduct epidemiological studies could increase the knowledge on how adverse effects of exposure to various stressors (exposome) can influence human health.
Abstract
Chlordane compounds (CHLs) are components of technical chlordane listed in the Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants identified as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and may interfere with hormone biosynthesis, metabolism or action resulting in an unbalanced hormonal function. There is increasing scientific evidence showing EDCs as risk factors in the pathogenesis and development of obesity and obesity-related metabolic syndromes such as type 2 diabetes, but there is no systematized information on the effect of CHLs in humans. Our aim is to identify the epidemiological data on the association between CHLs with adiposity and diabetes using a systematic approach to identify the available data and summarizing the results through meta-analysis. We searched PubMed and Web of Science from inception up to 15 February 2021, to retrieve original data on the association between chlordanes, and adiposity or diabetes. For adiposity, regression coefficients and Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficients were extracted and converted into standardized regression coefficients. Data were combined using fixed effects meta-analyses to compute summary regression coefficients and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). For the association between chlordanes and diabetes, Odds ratios (ORs) were extracted and the DerSimonian and Laird method was used to compute summary estimates and respective 95% CI. For both, adjusted estimates were preferred, whenever available. Among 31 eligible studies, mostly using a cross-sectional approach, the meta-analysis for adiposity was possible only for oxychlordane and transchlordane, none of them were significantly associated with adiposity [(β = 0.04, 95% CI 0.00; 0.07, I2 = 89.7%)] and (β = 0.02, 95% CI - 0.01; 0.06), respectively. For diabetes, the estimates were positive for all compounds but statistically significant for oxychlordane [OR = 1.96 (95% CI 1.19; 3.23)]; for trans-nonachlor [OR = 2.43 (95% CI 1.64; 3.62)] and for heptachlor epoxide [OR = 1.88 (95% CI 1.42; 2.49)]. Our results support that among adults, the odds of having diabetes significantly increase with increasing levels of chlordanes. The data did not allow to reach a clear conclusion regarding the association with adiposity.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a disease that causes lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Age, sex hormones, diet, diabetes, obesity, and genetic factors are closely related to the occurrence of BPH. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of diabetes mellitus on LUTS in BPH patients. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of eighteen articles consisting of 1685 cases and 4653 controls. Results show that the International Prostate Symptom Score of the diabetic BPH group was significantly higher than that of the non-diabetic BPH group, indicating that diabetes mellitus may aggravate the LUTS of BPH patients. Authors conclude that LUTS in BPH patients is increased in patients with diabetes mellitus compared with controls.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a disease that causes lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), which are the most common urological problem in approximately one-third of the male population aged over 50 years. Some studies have suggested that diabetes may be a risk factor for the development of BPH. However, whether diabetes aggravates the LUTS of BPH patients is still controversial. AIM: To investigate the impact of diabetes mellitus on LUTS in BPH patients. METHODS A literature search was conducted using Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure literature databases. This meta-analysis was registered in PROSPERO (registration number: CRD 42020200794). Fixed- or random-effects models were used for analysis according to heterogeneity. The results of the systematic analysis are presented as weighted mean difference (WMD) with the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS In total, 1308 studies were retrieved from databases and 18 articles comprising 1685 cases and 4653 controls were selected for meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) value and prostate volume of BPH patients with diabetes was significantly higher than that of BPH patients without diabetes. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review is the first to evaluate the impact of diabetes mellitus on LUTS in BPH patients. The results of our meta-analysis support the hypothesis that LUTS in BPH patients is increased in patients with diabetes mellitus compared with controls, which suggests that physicians should pay more attention to BPH patients with diabetes mellitus. Besides aging, diabetes mellitus has also been recognised as a major risk factor for ED. The aim of this study was to systematically evaluate the association between prediabetes and ED. This study is a meta-analysis of nine observational studies, including five matched case-control studies and four cross-sectional studies. Results show that compared to men with normoglycemia, those with prediabetes were associated with higher prevalence of ED. Further subgroup analysis showed that mean age of the male participants in each study may affect the results as the association between prediabetes and ED seemed to be stronger in studies with younger men (mean age <50 years) than that in studies with older men (mean age ≥50 years). Authors conclude that prediabetes is associated with higher prevalence of ED, which may be independent of age of the males and may be stronger in young men.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes has been associated with the increased risk of erectile dysfunction (ED). However, previous studies evaluating the association between prediabetes and ED showed inconsistent results. We performed a meta-analysis of observational studies to systematically evaluate the above association. METHODS Relevant observational studies were retrieved by search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. A random-effect model which incorporated the potential intra-study heterogeneity was used for the meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses were performed to evaluate the influences of study characteristics on the outcome. RESULTS Nine studies (five matched case-control studies and four cross-sectional studies) were included. Age were adjusted or matched in all of the studies. Pooled results showed that compared to men with normoglycemia, men with prediabetes were associated with higher prevalence of ED (odds ratio = 1.62, 95% confidence interval: 1.28 to 2.07, P < 0.001; I2 = 78%). Subgroup analyses showed that the association was not significantly affected by definition of prediabetes, diagnostic tool for ED, or controlling of additional variables besides age (both P for subgroup difference > 0.05). However, the association between prediabetes and ED seemed to be stronger in case-control studies than that in cross-sectional studies, and in studies with younger men (mean age < 50 years) than in those with older men (mean age ≥ 50 years; both P for subgroup difference < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Prediabetes is associated with higher prevalence of ED, which may be independent of age of the males and may be stronger in young men.

Obesity in childhood and adolescence is associated with an increased risk of non-communicable diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive lung disease and some forms of cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of health education interventions delivered in school settings to prevent overweight and obesity and/ or reduce BMI in adolescents, and to explore the key features of effectiveness. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 39 publications based on 33 studies. Six studies recruited adolescent girls only, one adolescent boys only and one study included parent-student dyad. Results show that: - Most of the effective interventions were delivered by teachers who were trained prior to the intervention. - School-based interventions are often delivered through school-staff, however, appropriate training/ CPD prior to the intervention could be a crucial component to support the provision and uptake of the intervention. - Many of the effective interventions included parental involvement and modifications to the school environment. - Interventions should target the biological, psychosocial, environmental, and behavioural influences on diet and physical activity. Authors conclude that school-based health education interventions could potentially help in improving BMI outcomes in the adolescent age group.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescents are increasingly susceptible to obesity, and thus at risk of later non-communicable diseases, due to changes in food choices, physical activity levels and exposure to an obesogenic environment. This review aimed to synthesize the literature investigating the effectiveness of health education interventions delivered in school settings to prevent overweight and obesity and/ or reduce BMI in adolescents, and to explore the key features of effectiveness. METHODS A systematic search of electronic databases including MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychINFO and ERIC for papers published from Jan 2006 was carried out in 2020, following PRISMA guidelines. Studies that evaluated health education interventions in 10-19-year-olds delivered in schools in high-income countries, with a control group and reported BMI/BMI z-score were selected. Three researchers screened titles and abstracts, conducted data extraction and assessed quality of the full text publications. A third of the papers from each set were cross-checked by another reviewer. A meta-analysis of a sub-set of studies was conducted for BMI z-score. RESULTS Thirty-three interventions based on 39 publications were included in the review. Most studies evaluated multi-component interventions using health education to improve behaviours related to diet, physical activity and body composition measures. Fourteen interventions were associated with reduced BMI/BMI z-score. Most interventions (n = 22) were delivered by teachers in classroom settings, 19 of which trained teachers before the intervention. The multi-component interventions (n = 26) included strategies such as environment modifications (n = 10), digital interventions (n = 15) and parent involvement (n = 16). Fourteen studies had a low risk of bias, followed by 10 with medium and nine with a high risk of bias. Fourteen studies were included in a random-effects meta-analysis for BMI z-score. The pooled estimate of this meta-analysis showed a small difference between intervention and control in change in BMI z-score (- 0.06 [95% CI -0.10, - 0.03]). A funnel plot indicated that some degree of publication bias was operating, and hence the effect size might be inflated. CONCLUSIONS Findings from our review suggest that school-based health education interventions have the public health potential to lower BMI towards a healthier range in adolescents. Multi-component interventions involving key stakeholders such as teachers and parents and digital components are a promising strategy.

The disease is still very high, and it is relapsing to the worst in some countries. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and outcome of malnutrition among patients with COVID-19. This study is a systemic review and meta-analysis of 14 studies with 4187 participants. Results indicate that the prevalence of malnutrition was very high among hospitalized patients with COVID-19, and that mortality among hospitalized patients with COVID-19 was more than 10 times more likely as compared to those who were well-nourished. Authors conclude that a mitigating strategy by different stakeholders is needed to prevent and manage malnutrition and its outcomes.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is inevitable in patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) due to its effect on the gastrointestinal system, immune system, and high metabolic activity. However, the prevalence of malnutrition and its outcomes is uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and outcome of malnutrition among patients with COVID-19. METHOD A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed/Medline; Science direct and LILACS from December 29, 2019 to September, 2020 without language restriction. All observational studies reporting the prevalence of malnutrition were included while case reports and reviews were excluded. The data were extracted with two independent authors with a customized format and the disagreements were resolved by the other authors. The methodological quality of included studies was evaluated using a standardized critical appraisal tool. RESULTS A total of 511 articles were identified from different databases and 27 articles were selected for evaluation after the successive screening. Fourteen articles with 4187 participants were included. The pooled prevalence of malnutrition among hospitalized patients with COVID-19 was 49.11% (95% CI: 31.67 to 66.54). The odd of mortality among patients COVID-19 with malnutrition was 10 times more likely as compared to those who were well-nourished. CONCLUSION The prevalence of malnutrition and mortality associated with malnutrition among COVID-19 hospitalized patients was very high which entails a mitigating strategy by different stakeholders to prevent and manage malnutrition and its outcomes. High blood pressure or hypertension is defined as systolic blood pressure of 140 mmHg or higher, and diastolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg or higher. It is an independent and major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney failure. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a vegetarian diet on the reduction of blood pressure. This study is a systematic review together with trial sequential analysis. A total of 15 studies involving 856 individuals met the eligibility criteria and were included in the final analyses. Results show that a vegetarian dietary pattern significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Furthermore, dietary patterns based solely on plant sources are more effective in reducing blood pressure than other types of vegetarian diet which still include animal products or by-products, such as eggs and dairy products. Authors conclude that vegetarian diets, especially vegan diets, reduce blood pressure when compared with omnivorous diets. Thus, suggesting that they may be crucial in the primary prevention and overall management of hypertension.
Abstract
The beneficial effects of a vegetarian diet on blood pressure (BP) control have been reported in previous systematic reviews; however, so far, their relative effectiveness is not well established. Here, we performed a systematic review together with trial sequential analysis to determine the effect of a vegetarian diet on the reduction of blood pressure. We searched the randomized controlled trial (RCT) through Medline, PubMed and Cochrane Central Register. Fifteen eligible RCTs with 856 subjects were entered into the analysis. The pooled results demonstrated that vegetarian diet consumption significantly lowered the systolic blood pressure (weighted mean difference (WMD), -2.66 mmHg (95% confidence interval (CI) = -3.76, -1.55, p < 0.001) and diastolic BP was WMD, -1.69 95% CI = -2.97, -0.41, p < 0.001) as compared to an omnivorous diet. In subgroup analysis, a vegan diet demonstrated a greater reduction in systolic BP (WMD, -3.12 mm Hg; 95% CI = -4.54, -1.70, p < 0.001) as compared with a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet (WMD, -1.75 mm Hg, 95% CI -5.38, 1.88, p = 0.05). The vegan diet has showed a similar trend in terms of diastolic blood pressure reduction (WMD, -1.92 mm Hg (95% CI = -3.18, -0.66, p < 0.001) but those with a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet showed no changes in diastolic BP reduction (WMD, 0.00, 95% CI = 0.00, 0.00), p =0.432). In conclusion, vegetarian diets are associated with significant reductions in BP compared with omnivorous diets, suggesting that they may play a key role in the primary prevention and overall management of hypertension.

Eggs have a high cholesterol content and have therefore been associated with a risk for heart disease. However, studies to substantiate this have been conflicting, with some studies showing associations and others not. This systematic review and meta-analysis of over five million people and 763 studies aimed to evaluate the association between egg intake and the risk of heart disease. The results showed that higher egg intake was associated with a poor diet. Egg intake was not associated with heart disease and this was evident even in people who ate at least one egg per day. Even in people with other associated diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, egg intake was not associated with heart disease. It was concluded that egg consumption does not increase an individual’s risk for heart disease. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to justify the recommendation that patients at risk of heart disease or those who have heart disease, can still eat up to one egg per day, without risk of exacerbating their condition.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association between egg intake and cardiovascular disease risk among women and men in the United States, and to conduct a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies. DESIGN Prospective cohort study, and a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies. SETTING Nurses' Health Study (NHS, 1980-2012), NHS II (1991-2013), Health Professionals' Follow-Up Study (HPFS, 1986-2012). PARTICIPANTS Cohort analyses included 83 349 women from NHS, 90 214 women from NHS II, and 42 055 men from HPFS who were free of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer at baseline. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Incident cardiovascular disease, which included non-fatal myocardial infarction, fatal coronary heart disease, and stroke. RESULTS Over up to 32 years of follow-up (>5.54 million person years), 14 806 participants with incident cardiovascular disease were identified in the three cohorts. Participants with a higher egg intake had a higher body mass index, were less likely to be treated with statins, and consumed more red meats. Most people consumed between one and less than five eggs per week. In the pooled multivariable analysis, consumption of at least one egg per day was not associated with incident cardiovascular disease risk after adjustment for updated lifestyle and dietary factors associated with egg intake (hazard ratio for at least one egg per day v less than one egg per month 0.93, 95% confidence interval 0.82 to 1.05). In the updated meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies (33 risk estimates, 1 720 108 participants, 139 195 cardiovascular disease events), an increase of one egg per day was not associated with cardiovascular disease risk (pooled relative risk 0.98, 95% confidence interval 0.93 to 1.03, I2=62.3%). Results were similar for coronary heart disease (21 risk estimates, 1 411 261 participants, 59 713 coronary heart disease events; 0.96, 0.91 to 1.03, I2=38.2%), and stroke (22 risk estimates, 1 059 315 participants, 53 617 stroke events; 0.99, 0.91 to 1.07, I2=71.5%). In analyses stratified by geographical location (P for interaction=0.07), no association was found between egg consumption and cardiovascular disease risk among US cohorts (1.01, 0.96 to 1.06, I2=30.8%) or European cohorts (1.05, 0.92 to 1.19, I2=64.7%), but an inverse association was seen in Asian cohorts (0.92, 0.85 to 0.99, I2=44.8%). CONCLUSIONS Results from the three cohorts and from the updated meta-analysis show that moderate egg consumption (up to one egg per day) is not associated with cardiovascular disease risk overall, and is associated with potentially lower cardiovascular disease risk in Asian populations.
