Ongoing research is showing a potentially significant role of the microbiome and dysbiosis in COVID-19 disease severity and development of Long-Covid. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of the probiotic Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) as post-exposure prophylaxis against COVID-19. This study was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Participants were randomised to receive LGG or placebo in a 1:1 ratio. Results showed that the participants randomised to LGG had fewer symptoms and prolonged time to development of COVID-19 compared to those receiving placebo. Additionally, probiotic supplementation also reduced symptomatic disease, and changed the gut microbiome structure. Authors conclude that their findings lend credence to the notion that symbiotic microbes may be valuable partners in the fight against COVID-19 and potentially other future pandemic diseases.
Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose unprecedented challenges to worldwide health. While vaccines are effective, additional strategies to mitigate the spread/severity of COVID-19 continue to be needed. Emerging evidence suggests susceptibility to respiratory tract infections in healthy subjects can be reduced by probiotic interventions; thus, probiotics may be a low-risk, low-cost, and easily implementable modality to reduce risk of COVID-19. METHODS In this initial study, we conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial across the United States testing probiotic Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) as postexposure prophylaxis for COVID-19 in 182 participants who had household exposure to someone with confirmed COVID-19 diagnosed within ≤7 days. Participants were randomized to receive oral LGG or placebo for 28 days. The primary outcome was development of illness symptoms within 28 days of COVID-19 exposure. Stool was collected to evaluate microbiome changes. RESULTS Intention-to-treat analysis showed LGG treatment led to a lower likelihood of developing illness symptoms versus placebo (26.4 % vs. 42.9 %, p = 0.02). Further, LGG was associated with a statistically significant reduction in COVID-19 diagnosis (log rank, p = 0.049) via time-to-event analysis. Overall incidence of COVID-19 diagnosis did not significantly differ between LGG and placebo groups (8.8 % vs. 15.4 %, p = 0.17). CONCLUSIONS This data suggests LGG is associated with prolonged time to COVID-19 infection, reduced incidence of illness symptoms, and gut microbiome changes when used as prophylaxis ≤7 days post-COVID-19 exposure, but not overall incidence. This initial work may inform future COVID-19 prevention studies worldwide, particularly in developing nations where Lacticaseibacillus probiotics have previously been utilized to reduce other non-COVID infectious-morbidity. IBS patients suffer from intermittent abdominal pain/ discomfort, altered bowel habits, and abdominal bloating/distension. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of dietary restriction and probiotic use on IBS‐D patients. This study was a 2 × 2 factorial design, single‐centre, randomised trial. Phase 1 was a 12‐week dietary intervention, with 214 participants randomised to an IgG positive restricted diet (IgG res diet) or a control diet (cold/spicy/fried restricted). In Phase 2, 167 participants were randomised into either an IgG res diet + placebo or an IgG res diet + probiotic for 12 weeks. Symptom Severity Scale (IBS‐D‐SSS) and IgG titer were assessed at the beginning and the end of the study. Results showed that both diets reduced IBS‐D symptom severity scores and decreased immunoglobulin (IgG) antibody titer, although the IgG res diet had a greater impact. IBS symptom scores decreased with the addition of a Bifidobacterium probiotic along with dietary exclusion, however, IgG titers did not change with the probiotic compared to placebo. Authors concluded that diet restriction with appropriate and effective probiotics, provides greater symptom reductions for patients with IBS-D.

Summary Review:
Introduction
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional intestinal disorder, affecting 5-20% of the population and diet is likely a major factor in its development as well as in its management. The aim of this study was to compare 3 dietary interventions and the use of a probiotic supplement in patients with IBS-diarrhoea dominant (IBS-D).
Methods
The study was conducted in 2 phases. The first was a 12-week 2 × 2 factorial design, randomised dietary intervention and included 224 patients (214 completed) with IBS-D. The diets were an Eastern/Chinese restriction diet, avoiding cold/raw, spicy and fried foods (CSF), the second avoided common allergens as determined by an IgG test (IgG diet, 14 foods tested), the third a combination of the two, whilst the control group continued their usual (Eastern/Chinese) diet.
The second phase was a 12-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial comparing the CSF + IgG diet plus placebo with the CSF + IgG diet plus a 2 billion Bifidobacterium adolescentis supplement; this part included 202 patients of whom 169 completed the study.
The primary outcomes under observation were a reduction in IBS-D symptom severity Score (IBS-D-SSS) and IgG antibody titre (TigG).
Results
Phase 1: The IBS-D-SSS improved in all four groups from baseline (p<0.001), with the intervention groups improving significantly more than the control group (p<0.001). There was no statistically significant difference between the IgG and the IgG + CSF groups, although the authors considered there to be a synergistic effect. Statistically significant (p<0.001) reductions in TIgG were seen in all interventions, but not the control group.
Part 2: Significant (p<0.001) improvements in IBS-D-SSS were seen with both placebo and Bifidobacterium, although this was greater in the probiotic group (p<0.001). Improvements in TIgG were seen in both groups (p<0.001), with no difference between groups.
Conclusion
The authors concluded that the best intervention for patients with IBD-D is an IgG food elimination diet together with a Bifidobacterium probiotic supplement.
Clinical practice applications:
- Consider an elimination diet based on IgG testing for clients with IBS-D
- Consider combining elimination diet with a Bifidobacterium supplement. The dose used in this study was 4x 0.5 billion capsules of Bifidobacterium adolescentis
- Eliminating cold/raw, spicy and fried food could be an alternative to IgG elimination if the latter is not suitable for the client.
Considerations for future research:
- 45% and 35% of screened patients, respectively in the 2 phases of the study, were IgG negative. Screening for more potential food intolerances may extend the suitability of the approach to more patients
- Only a single strain probiotic was tested. Further research could evaluate other or combinations of Bifidobacteria strains in combination with an IgG elimination diet
- The mechanism(s) by which probiotics may affect symptoms of IBS-D are unknown. Adding stool microbiome analyses may shed further light on the effect of the intervention on the composition and function of the microbiome.
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Diet is a major contributor to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and is also a powerful tool for treatment of IBS. This study compared two diets and explored the effectiveness of the diets when combined with a probiotic for treatment of IBS-D patients. METHODS Phase I, patients were randomized into groups; control, cold/spicy/fried restricted diet (CSF res diet), IgG positive restricted diet (IgG res diet), and a combination both diets (CSF + IgG res diet). Phase II, patients were randomized into IgG res diet + placebo and IgG res diet + probiotic. Both interventions were 12 weeks in duration. Symptom Severity Scale (IBS-D-SSS) and IgG titer were assessed at the beginning and the end of the study. RESULTS Totals of 214 and 167 patients completed the two parts of the study, respectively. After intervention, IBS-D-SSS and TIgG grade were significantly improved compared to baseline, with results similar to the control group. In general, there were decreases in IBS-D-SSS and TIgG grade that were significantly different among the groups. There were exceptions; no differences were observed for IBS-D-SSS between the IgG res diet and CSF + IgG res diet, or TIgG grade between the CSF res diet, IgG res diet, and CSF + IgG res diet. However, the CSF res diet and IgG res diet had a synergistic effect that decreased IBS-D-SSS and TIgG titer, with a greater contribution by the IgG res diet. Therefore, we evaluated the IgG res diet with either placebo or probiotic and found that IBS-D-SSS and TIgG grade decreased from baseline. There was a significant decrease in IBS-D-SSS with the probiotic but TIgG grade was not significantly different between the IgG diet + placebo and IgG diet + probiotic diet. CONCLUSIONS Both the CSF res diet and IgG res diet improved IBS symptoms and demonstrated synergy, although the IgG res diet had a greater contribution. Further, when intolerant foods cannot be eliminated from a diet, avoiding uncooked, cold, spicy, fried, and alcoholic foods is a superior choice. The IgG res diet combined with Bifidobacteria was the best dietary choice and may function though a non-IgG pathway.

In oral health, the oral microbiota thrives with the human host, whereas dysbiotic compositional changes are associated with development of oral diseases. Free sugars constitute the most important dietary risk factor for the development of dental caries, with a dose-response relationship. The aim of this study was to determine if consumption of probiotic lozenges containing an equal mix of L. rhamnosus PB01 DSM14870 and L. curvatus EB10 DSM32307 and xylitol could counteract oral dysbiosis in the supragingival microbiota. This study was a quadruple-blinded (participant, care provider, investigator, outcome assessor), randomised, placebo-controlled, clinical trial. This study recruited eighty orally and systemically healthy individuals aged 19–31 years. Participants were randomly assigned to the placebo or intervention group. Results showed that probiotics partly counteract sugar-mediated loss of diversity in the supragingival microbiota, which was observed in the placebo group. Consequently, from a microbiological point of view, the probiotic supplement augmented resilience of the supragingival microbiota in the resolution period after sugar stress. Authors concluded that probiotics affect the composition of the supragingival microbiota during short-term sugar stress in healthy individuals.
Abstract
The aim was to test if probiotics counteract oral dysbiosis during 14 days of sugar stress and subsequently help restore oral homeostasis. Eighty healthy individuals received either probiotics (n = 40) or placebo lozenges (n = 40) for 28 days and rinsed with a 10% sucrose solution 6-8 times during the initial 14 days of the trial. Saliva and supragingival samples were collected at baseline, day 14, and day 28. Saliva samples were analyzed for levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, albumin, and salivary enzyme activity. The supragingival microbiota was characterized according to the Human Oral Microbiome Database. After 14 days of sugar stress, the relative abundance of Porphyromonas species was significantly higher (p = 0.03) and remained significantly elevated at day 28 in the probiotic group compared to the placebo group (p = 0.004). At day 28, the relative abundance of Kingella species was significantly higher in the probiotic group (p = 0.03). Streptococcus gordinii and Neisseria elongata were associated with the probiotic group on day 28, while Streptococcus sobrinus was associated with the placebo group on day 14 and day 28. On day 28, the salivary albumin level was significantly lower in the probiotic group. The present study demonstrates a potential stabilizing effect on the supragingival microbiota mediated by consumption of probiotics during short-term sugar stress.

Importantly, both obesity and MetS have been found to be independently associated with depressive symptoms and inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of probiotics in the treatment of depressive disorders with possible comorbid MetS and its components. This study was an internal feasibility study based on the main randomised study - a single-centre, parallel-group, prospective, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial. Adult patients (≥18 years) with depressive disorders were randomly assigned (1:1) into either the placebo or probiotic group. Results showed a positive association between probiotics supplementation and psychometric parameters together with the metabolic profile, serum inflammation markers, and biomarkers of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease in patients with depressive disorders. Authors conclude that the findings of their study would be suitable for determining the potential clinical use of probiotics and assessing certain key factors such as potential biomarkers of response.
Abstract
There is a pressing need to identify new treatment options for depression and its comorbidities. Depression often coexists with metabolic complications, and the two may share a pathophysiological overlap, including inflammation and microbiota changes. Microbiota interventions (e.g., probiotics) may represent a safe and easy-to-use treatment option as an adjunctive therapy in patients only partially responsive to pharmacologic treatment. (1) Objective: The paper presents the results of a feasibility and pilot study. The study is an internal part of a randomized controlled trail (RCT) of the effect of probiotic supplementation on psychometric, anthropometric, metabolic, and inflammatory parameters in adult patients with depressive disorders depending on the presence of metabolic syndrome. (2) Methods: The trial has a four-arm, parallel-group, prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled design. Sixty participants received a probiotic preparation containing Lactobacillus helveticus Rosell®-52 and Bifidobacterium longum Rosell®-175 over 60 days. The feasibility of the study design was assessed, as well as the rates of recruitment, eligibility, consent, and study completion. The following were assessed: depressive, anxiety and stress symptoms, quality of life, blood pressure, body mass index and waist circumference, complete blood count with differential, serum levels of C-reactive protein, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, some secondary markers of inflammation and metabolic health, as well as noninvasive biomarkers of liver fibrosis (APRI and FIB-4). (3) Results: The study was found to be generally feasible. The eligibility rate was 52% of recruited participants with 80% completing the study protocol. No differences in sociodemographic or anthropometric factors or basic laboratory findings were found between the placebo and probiotic group at the start of the intervention period. Importantly, the proportion of recruited participants fulfilling the criteria of metabolic syndrome was too low. (4) Conclusions: Whilst the whole study protocol was feasible, some different timepoint procedures require modification. The major weakness of the recruitment methods was that the percentage of metabolic arms participants was insufficient. Overall, the full RCT design on probiotics in depression with vs. without metabolic syndrome was shown to be feasible with little modification.

In addition, the pretreatment helped to decrease the duration of minor complications. Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of probiotic pretreatment on the alteration and recovery of gut microbiota after bowel preparation and its correlation with minor complications. This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial that included participants 40-65 years of age. Participants were randomly provided probiotics (active group) or placebo (placebo group) for 1 month before the colonoscopy and their feces collected. A total of 51 participants were included in the present study (26 in the active group and 25 in the placebo group). In the active group, the microbial diversity, evenness, and distribution were not significantly changed between before and after bowel preparation, but did change in the placebo group. The number of gut microbiota that decreased after bowel preparation in the active group was lower than in the placebo group. On the seventh day after colonoscopy, the gut microbiota in the active group was restored to almost the same level as before bowel preparation. In addition, we identified that several strains were assumed as key microbiota in early colonization and some taxa were increased only in the active group after bowel preparation. In multivariate analysis, taking probiotics before bowel preparation was identified as a significant factor for decreasing the duration of minor complications (odds ratio 0.13, 95% confidence interval 0.02-0.60, p = 0.027). Probiotic pretreatment had benefits on the alteration and recovery of gut microbiota and possible complications after bowel preparation. Probiotics may also aid in the early colonization of key microbiota.

Staphylococcus aureus is a human pathogen that can cause several serious and often fatal infections. Treatment is complicated by widespread antibiotic resistance, such as in methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA). The aim of this study was to analyse whether a regimen of B subtilis (strain MB40) can decrease S aureus colonisation in humans and thereby overcome the problems related to topical decolonisation efforts and the use of antibiotics. This study was a single-centre, phase 2, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial. Individuals with S aureus colonisation were randomly assigned (1:1) to the intervention or control group. Results showed that colonisation densities in the intestine were reduced by probiotic treatment. Furthermore, there were no significant effects on the overall composition of the intestinal microbiome. Authors concluded that B subtilis probiotic could be used to reduce S aureus and MRSA colonisation prevalence and thus might have clinical potential to lower infection rates.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Decolonisation is considered a valuable means to reduce Staphylococcus aureus infection rates. However, previous topical strategies targeting the nose or skin had little success, and oral antibiotic-based decolonisation is ill advised because of eradication of the microbiota and development of antibiotic resistance. We previously showed that the probiotic Bacillus subtilis significantly diminished S aureus at the main intestinal colonisation site via specific bacterial interaction in mice; in this study, we tested this probiotic approach to control S aureus colonisation in humans. METHODS We did a single-centre, phase 2, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial in adults from the Songkhla region of Thailand who were colonised by S aureus. Eligible participants were adults (aged ≥18 years) without history of intestinal disease, antibiotic treatment, or hospital admission within the previous 90 days. Participants were excluded if they were pregnant, breastfeeding, taking probiotics, or had diarrhoea. Participants were allocated (1:1) to groups by computer randomisation in blocks of four, and research coordinators were masked to group allocation. Participants received 250 mg of probiotic B subtilis MB40 or placebo once per day for 30 days and S aureus colonisation was determined after the last dose was received. The primary outcome was colonisation by S aureus (continuous, mean decrease in colony-forming-unit count) in the intestine (by faecal counts) and nares (by nasal swabs) after intervention (30-day regimen of B subtilis probiotic). This trial is registered with the Thai Clinical Trials Registry, TCTR20210128003. FINDINGS The trial was done between Jan 29 and June 30, 2021, with enrolment taking place from Jan 29 to April 6, 2021. 115 participants were colonised by S aureus, either in the intestine (n=84), nose (n=50), or both (n=19), and were randomly assigned to treatment (n=55) and placebo groups (n=60). Oral probiotic B subtilis resulted in significant reduction of S aureus in stool (96·8%; p<0·0001) and nose (65·4%; p=0·0002). There were no differences in adverse effects or significant microbiome changes between the intervention and placebo groups. INTERPRETATION B subtilis probiotic eliminated more than 95% of the total S aureus colonising the human body without altering the microbiota. This probiotic strategy offers several key advantages over presently used decolonisation strategies for potential use in people with chronic or long-term risk of S aureus infection. Furthermore, by establishing a defining role of the intestinal colonisation site, our findings call for revisiting fundamental notions about S aureus colonisation. Physiological and psychological stress can affect gut function and its interaction with the brain (gut-brain axis). Different types of stress and different phases of stress regulation can affect the brain in different ways. Manipulation of the gut microbiota using probiotic bacteria has been shown to improve cognition and stress response. However, probiotic interventions are likely to have different effects depending on the strains used. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a probiotic intervention on brain activity and stress response. This study is a randomised double-blinded placebo-controlled crossover study with 22 healthy subjects. Subjects were randomised to two study groups receiving the intervention in different orders (probiotics or placebo first). Results demonstrate that the probiotic intervention: - altered activity in specific brain regions known to regulate emotion and stress response. - significantly altered functional connectivity between the upper limbic and medioventral regions. - did not affect the activation of other limbic or subcortical areas. Authors conclude that their findings could further lead to possible clinical implications for improving stress resilience and potential roles in the treatment of affective and gut-brain axis disorders.
Abstract
Probiotics are suggested to impact physiological and psychological stress responses by acting on the gut-brain axis. We investigated if a probiotic product containing Bifidobacterium longum R0175, Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum R1012 affected stress processing in a double-blinded, randomised, placebo-controlled, crossover proof-of-concept study (NCT03615651). Twenty-two healthy subjects (24.2 ± 3.4 years, 6 men/16 women) underwent a probiotic and placebo intervention for 4 weeks each, separated by a 4-week washout period. Subjects were examined by functional magnetic resonance imaging while performing the Montreal Imaging Stress Task (MIST) as well as an autonomic nervous system function assessment during the Stroop task. Reduced activation in regions of the lateral orbital and ventral cingulate gyri was observed after probiotic intervention compared to placebo. Significantly increased functional connectivity was found between the upper limbic region and medioventral area. Interestingly, probiotic intervention seemed to predominantly affect the initial stress response. Salivary cortisol secretion during the task was not altered. Probiotic intervention did not affect cognitive performance and autonomic nervous system function during Stroop. The probiotic intervention was able to subtly alter brain activity and functional connectivity in regions known to regulate emotion and stress responses. These findings support the potential of probiotics as a non-pharmaceutical treatment modality for stress-related disorders.

Treatment is mainly a combination of alcohol abstinence, improving nutrition, treating the liver injury, and preventing or reversing the progress of liver fibrosis or promoting liver regeneration. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus casei on lipid metabolism and intestinal microflora in patients with alcoholic liver injury. This study was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. A total of 181 ALD patients were recruited and randomly assigned to one of the three groups; low-dose group, high-dose group and positive control group (+ there was another group of 20 healthy people which served as normal control group). Results showed disorder of lipid metabolism, intestinal flora imbalance and inflammation in patients with alcoholic liver injury. Furthermore, after supplementation of Lactobacillus casei, there was a significant increase in the amount of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Authors conclude that Lactobacillus casei supplementation can improve lipid metabolism and regulate intestinal flora disorders in patients with alcoholic liver injury.
Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study aims to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus casei on lipid metabolism and intestinal microflora in patients with alcoholic liver injury. METHODS In a double-blind randomized controlled trial, 158 recruited alcoholic liver injury patients were randomized to three treatments for 60 days: low-dose group (LP, n = 58, 100 ml of Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LcS)), high-dose group (HP, n = 54, 200 ml of LcS), and positive control group (PC, n = 46, 100 ml of special drinks without active Lactobacillus casei). Another group of 20 healthy people was served as normal control group (NC). RESULTS The serum levels of TG and LDLC in the HP group were significantly decreased by 26.56% and 23.83%, respectively than those in the PC group (P < 0.05). After supplementation of Lactobacillus casei, there was a significant increase in the amount of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium when compared with the PC group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Supplementation of Lactobacillus casei can improve lipid metabolism and regulate intestinal flora disorders in patients with alcoholic liver injury.

In Vietnam, despite many achievements in malnutrition prevention, the rate of malnutrition is elevated. Malnutrition results in ARI, diarrhoea, and physical and mental retardation in children The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a probiotic fermented milk product containing Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LcS) on gastrointestinal symptoms, respiratory infections, and the nutrition status of children from Vietnam. This study was a community based, controlled open trial and it was conducted over a period of 18 weeks consisting of 2-week screening/pre-observational period; 12-week intervention period; and 4-week postintervention period. A total of 1036 children (518 children in the Control group and 518 children in the Probiotic group) were enrolled in this study. Results showed a significant reduction in the incidence of constipation and beneficial effects to prevent infectious diseases in Vietnamese children. Furthermore, while LcS did not affect the duration of diarrhoea, the incidence of diarrhoea tended to be improved after 12 weeks of intervention. Authors conclude that habitual consumption of fermented milk containing LcS prevented constipation and ARI in Vietnamese children, and it may be useful for treating diarrhoea and improving nutritional status, thus conferring remarkable health benefits to children in Vietnam.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy of fermented milk containing Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LcS) on the incidence of constipation, diarrhea, acute respiratory infections (ARI), and nutritional status of young Vietnamese children. METHODS A controlled field trial was conducted with 1003 children (3-5 years old) in Thanh Hoa province in Vietnam. The probiotic group (n = 510) consumed fermented milk 65 mL/day containing 108 CFU/mL of LcS for the 12-week intervention period, whereas the control group (n = 493) was not given any. The incidence of constipation, diarrhea, ARI, and anthropometry in children was determined at baseline, after 4, 8, and 12-week intervention, and after the 4-week follow-up period. RESULTS Probiotic drink decreased the incidence of constipation after the 12-week intervention period (12.0% vs. 32.0%, OR = 0.28 (95% CI: 0.21-0.40), p < 0.001), tended to decrease the incidence of diarrhea (4.9% vs. 7.9%, OR = 0.60 (95% CI: 0.35-1.01), p = 0.068), and prevented the occurrence of ARI (15.9% vs. 24.5%, OR = 0.58 (95% CI: 0.42-0.79), p < 0.001), when compared with the control group. In contrast, no probiotic effects were observed for the duration of diarrhea or ARI. Weight gain was higher in the probiotic group than in the control group after 4, 8, and 12-week intervention and after the 4-week follow-up period (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Daily intake of fermented milk containing LcS strongly prevented the incidence of constipation and ARI in Vietnamese children. This study also revealed the potential effects of the use of a probiotic drink on diarrhea prevention as well as nutritional status improvement.

Exercise has been shown to improve fitness, wellbeing, and health. However, strenuous exercise may be detrimental physiologically, as well as affecting psychological health. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of daily probiotic supplementation on anxiety, stress, mood and fitness levels among competitive badminton players. This study was a randomised, placebo-controlled study. Recruited participants (n=30) were randomly divided into the probiotic group and the control group. The participants were given treatments for six weeks without altering the training schedule of the athletes. Results showed that stress and anxiety in badminton players could be alleviated with the daily consumption of probiotics for six weeks. Additionally, probiotics supplementation increased aerobic capacity. Authors conclude that probiotic supplements could be beneficial for athletes to enhance their mental state and physical performance. Thus, probiotic supplementation that may influence the regulation of pathways (neuro-endocrine) and mechanism of action in response to physical and psychological stressors encountered by badminton players should further studied.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Reports of probiotic consumption on athletes' performance are debatable due to their equivocal results. There is a need for more evidence on the effects of probiotic intake on psychological state and fitness level. Thus, this study determined the effects of daily probiotic consumption on competitive anxiety, perceived stress and mood among university badminton players, besides their fitness like aerobic capacity, strength, speed, leg power and agility. METHODS Thirty university badminton players aged from 19 to 22 years old were randomly divided equally into two groups, where the probiotic group (PG; n = 15) received a drink that contained Lactobacillus casei Shirota (3 × 1010 CFU) and placebo group (CG; n = 15) a placebo drink for six weeks. Anxiety, stress and mood levels were determined using the CSAI-2R, PSS and BRUMS questionnaires, respectively. Fitness levels were measured using by subjecting the players to 20-m shuttle runs (aerobic capacity), handgrips (muscular strength), vertical jumps (leg power), 40-m dash (speed) and T-test (agility). The Student's t-test (p < 0.05) was used to determine the differences between PG and CG players. RESULTS After six weeks, the anxiety and stress levels of PG players significantly decreased by 16% (p < 0.001) and 20% (p < 0.001), respectively, but there were no significant changes detected in CG players. Supplementation of probiotics also improved aerobic capacity in PG players by 5.9% (p < 0.001) but did not influence the speed, strength, leg power and agility. CONCLUSIONS Probiotics supplementation showed improved aerobic capacity and relieve anxiety and stress. However, further studies need to be carried out to determine the mechanisms through which probiotic intake produces these effects.
