According to previous research, IER protocols effectively manage obesity and may have many other health benefits, including improving metabolic health. This systematic review and meta-analysis of twenty-eight parallel-design randomised controlled trials looked at the benefits of IER protocols, such as ADF, TRE, and the 5:2 diet, and the effects of continuous energy restriction (CER) on anthropometric and cardiometabolic outcomes. The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis showed that both the IER and CER are equally beneficial. However, IER protocols showed greater but clinically insignificant improvements in fat-free mass and waist circumference in healthy adults. IER and CER protocols were not different in improving the lipid profile, glucose and insulin levels and blood pressure. Different IER diets showed different positive effects on metabolic parameters. Future robust studies are required to assess the effects of these energy-restriction diets on metabolic and anthropometric parameters because of the high variability in the included studies. However, healthcare professionals can use the results of this review to understand the potential clinical utility of various energy-restriction diets.
Abstract
The interest in intermittent energy restriction (IER) diets as a weight-loss approach is increasing. Different IER protocols exist, including time-restricted eating (TRE), alternate-day fasting (ADF), and the 5:2 diet. This meta-analysis compared the effects of these IER diets with continuous energy restriction (CER) on anthropometrics and cardiometabolic risk markers in healthy adults. Twenty-eight trials were identified that studied TRE (k = 7), ADF (k = 10), or the 5:2 diet (k = 11) for 2-52 wk. Energy intakes between intervention groups within a study were comparable (17 trials), lower in IER (5 trials), or not reported (6 trials). Weighted mean differences (WMDs) were calculated using fixed- or random-effects models. Changes in body weight [WMD: -0.42 kg; 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.96 to 0.13; P = 0.132] and fat mass (FM) (WMD: -0.31 kg; 95% CI: -0.98 to 0.36; P = 0.362) were comparable when results of the 3 IER diets were combined and compared with those of CER. All IER diets combined reduced fat-free mass (WMD: -0.20 kg; 95% CI: -0.39 to -0.01; P = 0.044) and waist circumference (WMD: -0.91 cm; 95% CI: -1.76 to -0.06; P = 0.036) more than CER. Effects on body mass index [BMI (kg/m2)], glucose, insulin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), serum lipid and lipoprotein concentrations, and blood pressure did not differ. Further, TRE reduced body weight, FM, and fat-free mass more than CER, whereas ADF improved HOMA-IR more. BMI was reduced less in the 5:2 diet compared with CER. In conclusion, the 3 IER diets combined did not lead to superior improvements in anthropometrics and cardiometabolic risk markers compared with CER diets. Slightly greater reductions were, however, observed in fat-free mass and waist circumference. To what extent differences in energy intakes between groups within studies may have influenced these outcomes should be addressed in future studies.

Obesity is characterised by excessive fat accumulation that often occurs during the process of aging. Aging is accompanied not only by a gradual increase in body fat stores but also a decrease in muscle mass, muscle function, and water retention. The aim of this study was to assess which nutrition and exercise interventions are most effective for improving the body composition (fat mass and muscle mass), body mass index, and waist circumference in persons with overweight or obesity near retirement age (55 to 70 years of age). This study was a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomised controlled trials of sixty-six studies. Results of the NMA showed that the most effective strategy to improve body composition, i.e., losing fat without increasing risk of sarcopenia in persons with obesity around retirement age, was combining energy restriction with resistance training or with mixed exercise (resistance combined with aerobic exercise) and/or high-protein intake. In fact, without training, an energy-restricted diet with or without added protein helped individuals lose fat mass but also tended to result in losses of muscle mass. Authors conclude that an energy-restricted diet alone probably contributes to the development of sarcopenic obesity in persons of retirement age. Thus, to simultaneously lose weight and maintain muscle mass, authors recommend a combination of energy restriction and resistance training.
Abstract
The retirement phase is an opportunity to integrate healthy (nutrition/exercise) habits into daily life. We conducted this systematic review to assess which nutrition and exercise interventions most effectively improve body composition (fat/muscle mass), body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) in persons with obesity/overweight near retirement age (ages 55-70 y). We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomized controlled trials, searching 4 databases from their inception up to July 12, 2022. The NMA was based on a random effects model, pooled mean differences, standardized mean differences, their 95% confidence intervals, and correlations with multi-arm studies. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were also conducted. Ninety-two studies were included, 66 of which with 4957 participants could be used for the NMA. Identified interventions were clustered into 12 groups: no intervention, energy restriction (i.e., 500-1000 kcal), energy restriction plus high-protein intake (1.1-1.7 g/kg/body weight), intermittent fasting, mixed exercise (aerobic and resistance), resistance training, aerobic training, high protein plus resistance training, energy restriction plus high protein plus exercise, energy restriction plus resistance training, energy restriction plus aerobic training, and energy restriction plus mixed exercise. Intervention durations ranged from 8 wk to 6 mo. Body fat was reduced with energy restriction plus any exercise or plus high-protein intake. Energy restriction alone was less effective and tended to decrease muscle mass. Muscle mass was only significantly increased with mixed exercise. All other interventions including exercise effectively preserved muscle mass. A BMI and/or WC decrease was achieved with all interventions except aerobic training/resistance training alone or resistance training plus high protein. Overall, the most effective strategy for nearly all outcomes was combining energy restriction with resistance training or mixed exercise and high protein. Health care professionals involved in the management of persons with obesity need to be aware that an energy-restricted diet alone may contribute to sarcopenic obesity in persons near retirement age. Peanuts contain bioactive substances that are beneficial for cardiovascular health. This three-arm, parallel-group randomised controlled trial (ARISTOTLE) and meta-analysis evaluated the beneficial effects of high-oleic peanuts and peanut butter in improving cardiometabolic health. Participants in the randomised controlled trial consumed 25 g of skin-roasted peanuts or 32 g of peanut butter, or a control butter made with peanut oil without fibre and polyphenols for six months. The skin-roasted peanuts group showed a reduction in total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratios. The meta-analysis was highly heterogeneous in participant ethnicity, health status, peanut intervention dosage and duration. The dosage of peanuts, peanut butter and high oleic peanuts used was between 25 and 200 g/day. The participants were healthy, with metabolic syndrome (MeS), or at risk of MeS. There was a significant increase in body weight among those with or at risk of MeS. In addition, healthy participants showed reduced triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratios. Healthcare professionals can use the results of this research to understand the beneficial impact of peanut consumption on the lipid profile. However, further robust studies are required due to the high heterogeneity of the included studies in the meta-analysis.
Abstract
UNLABELLED Although numerous studies have reported the protective effect of nut consumption on cardiovascular risk, evidence for the role of peanuts in maintaining cardiometabolic health is inconclusive. Presented here are the results from the ARISTOTLE study, a parallel randomized controlled trial evaluating the impact of regular peanut intake on anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical measurements. The 63 healthy subjects that completed the study consumed their habitual diet plus either: a) 25 g/day of skin roasted peanuts (SRP, n = 21), b) two tablespoons (32 g)/day of peanut butter (PB, n = 23) or c) two tablespoons (32 g)/day of a control butter based on peanut oil (CB, n = 19) for 6 months. In addition, a meta-analysis of clinical trials, including data from the ARISTOTLE study, was carried out to update the evidence for the effects of consuming peanuts, including high-oleic peanuts, and peanut butter on healthy subjects and those at high cardiometabolic risk. After a systematic search on PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Scopus databases up to July 2021, 11 studies were found to meet the eligibility criteria. In the ARISTOTLE study, lower total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratios were found in the SRP group compared to the CB group (p = 0.019 and p = 0.008). The meta-analysis of clinical trials revealed that peanut consumption is associated with a decrease in triglycerides (MD: -0.13; 95% CI, -0.20 to -0.07; p < 0.0001) and that healthy consumers had lower total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratios compared to the control groups (MD: -0.40; 95% CI, -0.71 to -0.09; p = 0.01 and MD: -0.19; 95% CI, -0.36 to -0.01; p = 0.03, respectively). However, individuals at high cardiometabolic risk experienced an increase in body weight after the peanut interventions (MD: 0.97; 95% CI, 0.54 to 1.41; p < 0.0001), although not in body fat or body mass index. According to the dose-response analyses, body weight increased slightly with higher doses of peanuts. In conclusion, a regular consumption of peanuts seems to modulate lipid metabolism, reducing triglyceride blood levels. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death and disability around the world and presents a significant burden for healthcare systems. CVD has many risk factors, including diet and lifestyle habits. Hence, favourable interventions in those areas can help prevent and manage CVD. This systematic review examined the effects of saffron crocus on cardiovascular risk factors. Saffron is derived from the flowering plant Saffron Crocus (Crocus sativus). It contains many active compounds such as crocetin, crocin, picrocrocin, and safrana, which in various studies demonstrated positive effects on blood glucose levels, insulin resistance and sensitivity and blood fats, besides also having antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities. Yet, results were not always consistent, and hence this meta-analysis gathered evidence from 32 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) which included a total of 1674 subjects and investigated the effect of saffron supplements on cardiovascular risk factors such as blood fats, blood glucose control, blood pressure, anthropometric measures, and inflammatory markers. In conclusion, the analysis showed that saffron supplementation aided the reduction of some inflammatory markers (CRP, TNF-α), had favourable effects on antioxidant capacity, reduced blood fats except high-density lipoprotein (HDL), enhanced blood control and insulin sensitivity, reduced blood pressure and was linked to a reduction in waist circumference but with no significant effect on weight itself, BMI or fat mass. The authors discussed how their results relate to previous research and what underlying mechanisms can explain the effects or discrepancies. Given the positive results, saffron presents itself as a promising supplement and adjunct therapy for managing CVD and its risk factors.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the world and is estimated to involve more people in the next years. It is said that alternative remedies such as herbs can be used to manage the complications of this disease. For this reason, we aimed to conduct this meta-analysis to systematically assess and summarize the effects of saffron supplementation as an important herb on cardiovascular risk factors in adults. METHODS A systematic search was done in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to find eligible articles up to September 2022. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effects of saffron on lipid profiles, glycemic control, blood pressure, anthropometric measures, and inflammatory markers were included. In the meta-analysis, 32 studies were taken into account (n = 1674). RESULTS Consumption of saffron significantly decreased triglyceride (TG) (WMD = -8.81 mg/dl, 95%CI: -14.33, -3.28; P = 0.002), total cholesterol (TC) (WMD = -6.87 mg/dl, 95%CI: -11.19, -2.56; P = 0.002), low density lipoprotein (LDL) (WMD = -6.71 mg/dl, 95%CI: -10.51, -2.91; P = 0.001), (P = 0.660), fasting blood glucose (FBG) level (WMD = -7.59 mg/dl, 95%CI: -11.88, -3.30; P = 0.001), HbA1c (WMD = -0.18%, 95%CI: -0.21, -0.07; P < 0.001), homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (WMD = -0.49, 95%CI: -0.89, -0.09; P = 0.016), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (WMD = -3.42 mmHg, 95%CI: -5.80, -1.04; P = 0.005), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) (WMD = -2.54 pg/ml, 95%CI: -4.43, -0.65; P = 0.008), waist circumference (WC) (WMD = -1.50 cm; 95%CI: -2.83, -0.18; P = 0.026), malondialdehyde (MDA) (WMD = -1.50 uM/L, 95%CI: -2.42, -0.57; P = 0.001), and alanine transferase (ALT) (WMD = -2.16 U/L, 95%CI: -4.10, -0.23; P = 0.028). Also, we observed that saffron had an increasing effect on total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (WMD = 0.07 mM/L, 95%CI: 0.01, 0.13; P = 0.032). There was linear regression between FBG and the duration of saffron intake. Additionally, the non-linear dose-response analysis has shown a significant association of saffron intervention with HDL (P = 0.049), HOMA-IR (P = 0.002), weight (P = 0.036), ALP (P = 0.016), FBG (P = 0.011), HbA1c (P = 0.002), and TNF-α (P = 0.042). A non-linear association between the length of the intervention and the level of HDL and DBP was also found. DISCUSSION That seems saffron could effectively improve TG, TC, LDL, FBG, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, SBP, CRP, TNF-α, WC, MDA, TAC, and ALT.

Poor dietary quality is well established as a potentially modifiable risk factor for mental disorders. The NOVA food classification system was recently developed to enable the categorisation of food items based on distinctive levels of processing. The aim of this study was to synthesise and provide quantitative analyses of the most up-to-date evidence assessing associations between consumption of ultra-processed food, as defined by the NOVA food classification system, and mental disorders. This study is systematic review and meta-analysis of 17 studies with a total of 385,541 participants. The studies were 15 cross-sectional and 2 prospectively designed studies. Results show that ultra-processed food consumption is bidirectionally associated with adverse mental health. In fact, greater intake of ultra-processed food was associated with increased odds of depressive and anxiety symptoms, both when these outcomes were assessed together as well as separately. Authors conclude that further prospective and experimental studies are required to better determine directionality and causality and ensure that global preventative and treatment strategies are efficacious and appropriate.
Abstract
Since previous meta-analyses, which were limited only to depression and by a small number of studies available for inclusion at the time of publication, several additional studies have been published assessing the link between ultra-processed food consumption and depression as well as other mental disorders. We aimed to build on previously conducted reviews to synthesise and meta-analyse the contemporary evidence base and clarify the associations between the consumption of ultra-processed food and mental disorders. A total of 17 observational studies were included (n = 385,541); 15 cross-sectional and 2 prospective. Greater ultra-processed food consumption was cross-sectionally associated with increased odds of depressive and anxiety symptoms, both when these outcomes were assessed together (common mental disorder symptoms odds ratio: 1.53, 95%CI 1.43 to 1.63) as well as separately (depressive symptoms odds ratio: 1.44, 95%CI 1.14 to 1.82; and, anxiety symptoms odds ratio: 1.48, 95%CI 1.37 to 1.59). Furthermore, a meta-analysis of prospective studies demonstrated that greater ultra-processed food intake was associated with increased risk of subsequent depression (hazard ratio: 1.22, 95%CI 1.16 to 1.28). While we found evidence for associations between ultra-processed food consumption and adverse mental health, further rigorously designed prospective and experimental studies are needed to better understand causal pathways.

Periodontal disease is preventable and reversible in its early stages; however, it can progress to chronic, irreversible states with significant destruction of the tooth-supporting tissues. The cause of periodontal disease is multifactorial with modifiable risk factors, including smoking, unhealthy diet (e.g., a western diet with high sugars and saturated fats), poor oral hygiene, hormonal changes, stress, various medications, and poorly managed comorbidities (e.g., type 2 diabetes), while non-modifiable risk factors include age, sex, and genetics. The aim of this study was to assess the effects on the clinical, microbiological, and immunological outcomes related to periodontal disease prevention and management. This study is systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials involving adults with periodontal diseases or healthy volunteers receiving probiotic supplementation (control groups did not receive probiotic supplementation). Results show that probiotic supplementation improved the clinical parameters, reduced the subgingival bacterial counts of specific periodontopathogens, and reduced the gingival crevicular fluid levels of some proinflammatory mediators in periodontal disease patients. Authors conclude that further research is required to better assess the therapeutic and preventive value of probiotic supplementation in patients with gingivitis (early disease), as well as in healthy (without periodontal disease) individuals.
Abstract
(1) Background: Periodontal diseases are a global health concern. They are multi-stage, progressive inflammatory diseases triggered by the inflammation of the gums in response to periodontopathogens and may lead to the destruction of tooth-supporting structures, tooth loss, and systemic health problems. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of probiotic supplementation on the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease based on the assessment of clinical, microbiological, and immunological outcomes. (2) Methods: This study was registered under PROSPERO (CRD42021249120). Six databases were searched: PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Dentistry and Oral Science Source. The meta-analysis assessed the effects of probiotic supplementation on the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases and reported them using Hedge's g standardized mean difference (SMD). (3) Results: Of the 1883 articles initially identified, 64 randomized clinical trials were included in this study. The results of this meta-analysis indicated statistically significant improvements after probiotic supplementation in the majority of the clinical outcomes in periodontal disease patients, including the plaque index (SMD = 0.557, 95% CI: 0.228, 0.885), gingival index, SMD = 0.920, 95% CI: 0.426, 1.414), probing pocket depth (SMD = 0.578, 95% CI: 0.365, 0.790), clinical attachment level (SMD = 0.413, 95% CI: 0.262, 0.563), bleeding on probing (SMD = 0.841, 95% CI: 0.479, 1.20), gingival crevicular fluid volume (SMD = 0.568, 95% CI: 0.235, 0.902), reduction in the subgingival periodontopathogen count of P. gingivalis (SMD = 0.402, 95% CI: 0.120, 0.685), F. nucleatum (SMD = 0.392, 95% CI: 0.127, 0.658), and T. forsythia (SMD = 0.341, 95% CI: 0.050, 0.633), and immunological markers MMP-8 (SMD = 0.819, 95% CI: 0.417, 1.221) and IL-6 (SMD = 0.361, 95% CI: 0.079, 0.644). (4) Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that probiotic supplementation improves clinical parameters, and reduces the periodontopathogen load and pro-inflammatory markers in periodontal disease patients. However, we were unable to assess the preventive role of probiotic supplementation due to the paucity of studies. Further clinical studies are needed to determine the efficacy of probiotic supplementation in the prevention of periodontal diseases.

Incidence of breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality, accounting for 15.5% of all cancer-related deaths. However, there is a lack of complete understanding of the effects of different types of dietary lipids on breast cancer development, such as saturated fatty acids (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), dietary cholesterol, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and unsaturated trans fatty acids (TFA). An evaluation of the effect of lipid consumption on breast cancer and the impact it has on menopausal status was conducted in this meta-analysis, which included forty-four studies. Increased saturated fatty acid intake was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. However, breast cancer risk was not associated with increased consumption of total fat, SFA, MUFA, PUFA, and cholesterol in premenopausal women. The effects of estrogen and the release of proinflammatory cytokines by adipocytes should be evaluated, as well as other pathways that contribute to the development of breast cancer. There is a need for further robust studies to evaluate the effects of different types of lipid consumption on breast cancer. Although the association between SFA and breast cancer is weak, healthcare professionals can use this study's findings to better understand the detrimental effect of SFA, despite the fact that there is a great deal of heterogeneity in the current analysis.

Abstract
Objective: To determine if there is an association between total lipid intake, saturated fatty acid (SFA), Poly- and Mono-Unsaturated Fatty Acid (PUFA and MUFA) and cholesterol intake and breast cancer risk. Materials and Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature and a meta-analysis following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We included all cohort and case-control studies published up to December 2020 with subgroup analysis according to menopausal status. Results: We included 44 articles for analysis. There was no association between total fat, SFA, MUFA, PUFA and cholesterol intake and breast cancer in the general population and in pre-menopausal women. In postmenopausal women, high SFA consumption was associated with increased breast cancer risk in case-control studies [relative risk (RR): 1.12; confidence interval (CI) 95%: 1.03-1.21; p = 0.006 but not in cohort studies (RR: 1.01; CI 95%: 0.85-1.19; p = 0.93). Conclusion: There was a weak association between high SFA consumption and breast cancer risk in post-menopausal women, however there was high heterogeneity for this analysis. As lipids can have different actions in the same family, studies should rather focus on specific lipid consumption.

The aim of this study was to comprehensively assess the dose–response relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and oral cancer risk. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of five studies. The studies were all case–control studies with a total of 1,278 cases and 5,137 controls. Results show that a more pro-inflammatory diet, represented by the higher DII score, was associated with an elevated risk of oral cancer. Authors conclude that reducing pro-inflammatory food components and promoting anti-inflammatory food components would be beneficial in the prevention and control of oral cancer.
Abstract
Background: Dietary inflammatory index (DII) has been suggested to be associated with oral cancer risk. However, a quantitative comprehensive assessment of the dose-response relationship has not been reported. We performed a meta-analysis to clarify the risk of oral cancer with DII. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases for relevant articles published up to 1 March 2022. Fixed- or random-effects models were utilized to estimate the pooled odds ratio (OR) of oral cancer with DII, as appropriate. Restricted cubic splines were used to model the dose-response relationship. Results: We included five case-control studies involving 1,278 cases and 5,137 controls in the meta-analysis. Risk of oral cancer was increased by 135% with the highest versus lowest DII level [OR: 2.35, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.88-2.94], and 79% with higher versus lower DII level (OR: 1.79, 95% CI: 1.49-2.15). We found no evidence of a nonlinear dose-response association of DII with oral cancer (pnon-linearity = 0.752), and the risk was increased by 17% (OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.05-1.30) with 1 unit increment in DII score. Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggested that a higher DII score was associated with increased risk of oral cancer. Therefore, reducing pro-inflammatory components and promoting anti-inflammatory components of diet may be effective in the prevention of oral cancer.

Dementia is a chronic condition characterised as a decline in cognitive functioning that leads to dependence in the performance of daily activities, including nutritional sufficiency. As the dis-ease progresses, eating and drinking may become more difficult. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of oral nutrition supplements (ONS) on nutritional intake and clinical outcomes in older persons with dementia. This study is a systemic review which included ten studies of which 9 where experimental studies (n=6 RCTs; n=3 non RCTs) based on patients with dementia who were undernourished. Results indicate that ONS improved daily intake of energy and protein, compliance was high, and more persons met the recommended nutrition intake. In fact, intervention with ONS improved nutritional status; however, no effects on cognitive or functional outcomes were reported. Authors conclude that there is the need for a more comprehensive intervention plan for people with cognitive impairments that addresses the individual nutritional challenges in order to systematically meet nutritional needs.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE Persons with dementia are at risk of malnutrition, evidenced by low dietary intake, which has consequences for nutritional status, activity of daily living and disease progression. The effects of oral nutrition supplements (ONS) on nutritional intake, nutritional status, and cognitive and physical outcomes in older persons with dementia were evaluated. METHODS PubMed, Medline, Embase, CINAHL and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched in December 2017, and this was repeated in May 2019. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Analysis (PRISMA) checklist was used. Papers were considered if they presented experimental clinical trials using oral nutritional supplements to persons diagnosed with dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment, and conducted in hospitals, nursing homes or homes. RESULTS We included ten articles reporting nine clinical trials. A total of 407 persons with dementia were included, of whom 228 used ONS for 7 to 180 days. Nutritional intake improved by 201 to 600 kcal/day. Energy intake from ordinary foods was not affected, thus ONS improved the persons daily intake of energy and protein. Body weight, muscle mass, and nutritional biomarkers in blood improved in the intervention groups compared with the control groups. No effects on cognition or physical outcomes were observed. CONCLUSION ONS increases the intake of energy and protein and improves nutritional status in persons with dementia; however, RCTs with longer intervention periods are needed to investigate the impact on cognitive and functional outcomes.

This systematic review investigated vegan diets in the European populations and their adequacy of macro-and micronutrient intake, compared to the recommendations of the World Health Organization. Included were 48 studies and their outcomes regarding protein, carbohydrates, fats and micronutrients summarized. The overall results and their impact on health are discussed in the later sections of the paper. Adequate intake amongst vegans was seen with carbohydrates, fats, Vitamin A, B1, В6, C, E, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and folate. Sodium exceeded recommended intake, whilst protein, Vitamin B2, B3, B12, D, iodine, zinc, calcium, potassium, selenium was of low consumption in a vegan diet. The bioavailability of some nutrients was also acknowledged. In summary, following a vegan diet appears to have positive and negative aspects. A vegan diet profile can contribute to disease prevention with lower incidence rates of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Yet veganism appears to increase the risk for mental health conditions, bone fractures, immune system impairments, anaemias and deficiencies from low nutrient intake. This review yields a comprehensive overview of the positive and negative health consequences of a vegan diet. It may be a useful reference for those looking to support vegans or individuals considering adopting a vegan diet pattern.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vegan diets, where animal- and all their by-products are excluded from the diet, have gained popularity, especially in the last decade. However, the evaluation of this type of diet has not been well addressed in the scientific literature. This study aimed to investigate the adequacy of vegan diets in European populations and of their macro- and micronutrient intakes compared to World Health Organization recommendations. METHODS A systematic search in PubMed, Web of Science, IBSS, Cochrane library and Google Scholar was conducted and 48 studies (12 cohorts and 36 cross-sectional) were included. RESULTS Regarding macronutrients, vegan diets are lower in protein intake compared with all other diet types. Veganism is also associated with low intake of vitamins B2, Niacin (B3), B12, D, iodine, zinc, calcium, potassium, selenium. Vitamin B12 intake among vegans is significantly lower (0.24-0.49 μg, recommendations are 2.4 μg) and calcium intake in the majority of vegans was below recommendations (750 mg/d). No significant differences in fat intake were observed. Vegan diets are not related to deficiencies in vitamins A, B1, Β6, C, E, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and folate and have a low glycemic load. CONCLUSIONS Following a vegan diet may result in deficiencies in micronutrients (vitamin B12, zinc, calcium and selenium) which should not be disregarded. However, low micro- and macronutrient intakes are not always associated with health impairments. Individuals who consume a vegan diet should be aware of the risk of potential dietary deficiencies.
