Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an enveloped RNA beta-coronavirus. This virus caused the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The aim of this review was to investigate the relationship between microbiota, immunity, and COVID-19, with particular focus on how microbiome-associated immune crosstalk can shape outcome of COVID-19. The study included 118 articles which investigated or reviewed COVID-19 or coronavirus and the microbiome of the gut or respiratory tract. Findings indicate that: - an over-activated immune system leads to massive pulmonary damage in COVID-19 patients. - the effect of aging and comorbidities, and the use of antibiotics have an effect on the diversity of the microbiota. - the milieu of gut flora can exert influence on pulmonary immune responses. - a unique cross-talk exists between the pulmonary and gut microbial compartments. Authors conclude by highlighting the need of further studies that delineate the role of the microbiota and their products in the immune dysregulation observed in SARS-CoV-2 infections.
Abstract
By the beginning of 2020, infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) had rapidly evolved into an emergent worldwide pandemic, an outbreak whose unprecedented consequences highlighted many existing flaws within public healthcare systems across the world. While coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is bestowed with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, involving the vital organs, the respiratory system transpires as the main route of entry for SARS-CoV-2, with the lungs being its primary target. Of those infected, up to 20% require hospitalization on account of severity, while the majority of patients are either asymptomatic or exhibit mild symptoms. Exacerbation in the disease severity and complications of COVID-19 infection have been associated with multiple comorbidities, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disorders, cancer, and chronic lung disease. Interestingly, a recent body of evidence indicated the pulmonary and gut microbiomes as potential modulators for altering the course of COVID-19, potentially via the microbiome-immune system axis. While the relative concordance between microbes and immunity has yet to be fully elucidated with regards to COVID-19, we present an overview of our current understanding of COVID-19-microbiome-immune cross talk and discuss the potential contributions of microbiome-related immunity to SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis and COVID-19 disease progression.

It is associated with increased prevalence of obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis. The aim of this narrative review was to discuss the current evidence on the association between dietary patterns and clinical endpoints in postmenopausal women (body composition, bone mass, and risk markers for cardiovascular disease), and thereby providing novel insight into the establishment of optimal dietary guidelines for healthy postmenopausal period. Research shows that: - the changes in weight and fat distribution in women are associated with aging and mainly with the decrease in oestradiol levels during peri- and post-menopause. - calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K, selenium, magnesium, and beta-carotene adequate intake could be linked with better BMD in postmenopausal women. - diet is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and could be a powerful intervention to reduce cardiovascular risks in postmenopausal women. - the Mediterranean diet is composed of healthy foods that have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Authors indicate that future studies evaluating the effects of low-fat, plant-based diets on fat mass in post-menopausal women are needed.
Abstract
Among the various aspects of health promotion and lifestyle adaptation to the postmenopausal period, nutritional habits are essential because they concern all women, can be modified, and impact both longevity and quality of life. In this narrative review, we discuss the current evidence on the association between dietary patterns and clinical endpoints in postmenopausal women, such as body composition, bone mass, and risk markers for cardiovascular disease. Current evidence suggests that low-fat, plant-based diets are associated with beneficial effects on body composition, but further studies are needed to confirm these results in postmenopausal women. The Mediterranean diet pattern along with other healthy habits may help the primary prevention of bone, metabolic, and cardiovascular diseases in the postmenopausal period. It consists on the use of healthy foods that have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and is associated with a small but significant decrease in blood pressure, reduction of fat mass, and improvement in cholesterol levels. These effects remain to be evaluated over a longer period of time, with the assessment of hard outcomes such as bone fractures, diabetes, and coronary ischemia.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) results from progressive loss of insulin secretion, which is typically combined with various degrees of insulin resistance. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of key sociodemographic and lifestyle-related risk factors for identifying vulnerable groups for T2DM with emphasis on data from Europe. This study is a narrative review which includes 101 publications. Literature shows that prevention of T2DM should be a collaborative effort which mobilizes multiple partners/ stakeholders at a national and international (e.g. European) level. In addition, a holistic approach is becoming increasingly essential in order to put into effect multidimensional public health programs and integrated interventions for effective T2DM prevention which will take into account both traditional and socioeconomic/socioecological factors. Authors conclude that a multidimensional approach for the prevention of T2DM may have a broader impact against the current diabesity epidemic within and across countries in Europe.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) comprises the vast majority of all diabetes cases in adults, with alarmingly increasing prevalence over the past few decades worldwide. A particularly heavy healthcare burden of diabetes is noted in Europe, where 8.8% of the population aged 20-79 years is estimated to have diabetes according to the International Diabetes Federation. Multiple risk factors are implicated in the pathogenesis of T2DM with complex underlying interplay and intricate gene-environment interactions. Thus, intense research has been focused on studying the role of T2DM risk factors and on identifying vulnerable groups for T2DM in the general population which can then be targeted for prevention interventions. METHODS For this narrative review, we conducted a comprehensive search of the existing literature on T2DM risk factors, focusing on studies in adult cohorts from European countries which were published in English after January 2000. RESULTS Multiple lifestyle-related and sociodemographic factors were identified as related to high T2DM risk, including age, ethnicity, family history, low socioeconomic status, obesity, metabolic syndrome and each of its components, as well as certain unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. As Europe has an increasingly aging population, multiple migrant and ethnic minority groups and significant socioeconomic diversity both within and across different countries, this review focuses not only on modifiable T2DM risk factors, but also on the impact of pertinent demographic and socioeconomic factors. CONCLUSION In addition to other T2DM risk factors, low socioeconomic status can significantly increase the risk for prediabetes and T2DM, but is often overlooked. In multinational and multicultural regions such as Europe, a holistic approach, which will take into account both traditional and socioeconomic/socioecological factors, is becoming increasingly crucial in order to implement multidimensional public health programs and integrated community-based interventions for effective T2DM prevention.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has swept across the world affecting all countries. As COVID-19 has spread within countries, vulnerable and marginalized populations, and those with low income and low socioeconomic status have been unduly affected. Every country has vulnerable populations that require special attention from policy makers in their response to the current pandemic. In fact, current literature shows that migrants living in refugee camps, detention centres and reception centres are at particularly high risk for COVID-19 exposure. Therefore, they should be included in national surveillance and be entitled to health care. In addition, it is essential to foster trust between public health practitioners and the leadership of these communities so that they may work together to effectively deliver prevention and intervention strategies. Authors conclude that COVID-19 pandemic has exposed health disparities among ethnic minorities and certain migrant groups. Thus, they highlight the importance of prompting greater health equity for diverse ethnocultural communities.

The aim of this review was to explore the possible association between ethnicity, incidence and outcomes of COVID-19 using both recent COVID-19 studies and studies of previous pandemics. Findings show that: - ethnic minorities have lower lung function compared to their Caucasian counterparts. - Black, Asian and Minority Ethnics communities are prone to higher rates of cardiovascular disease and are subject to adverse healthcare disparities. - ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected, and experience worse health outcomes compared to other groups. They are also more likely to be socioeconomically disadvantaged compared to white communities. - Africans are at a higher risk of receiving later and more indigent healthcare compared to other ethnic groups. Authors conclude that data on ethnicity should be routinely collected by governments to robustly determine magnitude of association. In addition, governments should also recommend strategies to mitigate risks on minority ethnicities due to socioeconomic disadvantages.
Abstract
The 2019 coronavirus disease is a serious public health emergency, with serious adverse implications for populations, healthcare systems, and economies globally. Recently, concerns have been raised about possible association between ethnicity, incidence and outcomes of COVID-19 arisen from early government data. In this review, we will explore the possible association using both recent COVID-19 studies and studies of previous pandemics. We call for data on ethnicity to be routinely collected by governments, as part of an international collaboration, alongside other patient demographics and further research to robustly determine the magnitude of association. Moreover, governments must learn from previous pandemics and recommended strategies to mitigate risks on minority ethnicities due to socioeconomic disadvantages.

Low grade, systemic, chronic inflammation is a feature of ageing and underlies many age-related chronic diseases states. As cells age their capacity to proliferate declines, which is referred to as cell senescence. Such senescent cells release multiple inflammatory markers contributing to a pro-inflammatory state. This is further aggravated by elevated oxidative stress and a reduced capacity to manage it, eventually leading to improper gene regulation and DNA damage. To define this age-related, complex inflammatory phenomena the authors introduced the term senoinflammation. A well-established intervention to reverse or slow down the ageing process and many ageing-associated diseases is calorie restriction (CR), by means of reducing overall caloric intake without malnutrition. CR exhibits potent anti-inflammatory effects, reduces age-associated oxidative stress, improves age-related metabolic dysregulation and enhances favourable gene expression. This review summarises how CR and CR-mimicking substances exert their anti-inflammatory effect and some of the cellular mechanism involved and may be of interest to those who are looking to get a more detailed understanding on ageing, inflammation and the benefits of CR.
Abstract
Chronic inflammation, a pervasive feature of the aging process, is defined by a continuous, multifarious, low-grade inflammatory response. It is a sustained and systemic phenomenon that aggravates aging and can lead to age-related chronic diseases. In recent years, our understanding of age-related chronic inflammation has advanced through a large number of investigations on aging and calorie restriction (CR). A broader view of age-related inflammation is the concept of senoinflammation, which has an outlook beyond the traditional view, as proposed in our previous work. In this review, we discuss the effects of CR on multiple phases of proinflammatory networks and inflammatory signaling pathways to elucidate the basic mechanism underlying aging. Based on studies on senoinflammation and CR, we recognized that senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), which mainly comprises cytokines and chemokines, was significantly increased during aging, whereas it was suppressed during CR. Further, we recognized that cellular metabolic pathways were also dysregulated in aging; however, CR mimetics reversed these effects. These results further support and enhance our understanding of the novel concept of senoinflammation, which is related to the metabolic changes that occur in the aging process. Furthermore, a thorough elucidation of the effect of CR on senoinflammation will reveal key insights and allow possible interventions in aging mechanisms, thus contributing to the development of new therapies focused on improving health and longevity.

Previous research has suggested that vegetarian diets are associated with lower plasma lipid concentrations, however long-term impacts of consuming a plant-based diet (PBD) has not been studied. The aim of this research was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis for studies that have examined the relationship between PBDs and plasma lipids. Thirty observational studies and 19 clinical trials were included in this analysis and showed consumption of a PBD was significantly associated with lower total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), but not in triglyceride concentrations. Based on these results, the authors conclude PBDs could offer individuals and healthcare professionals an effective option for reducing heart disease. They also add that while dietary changes may not be as powerful as pharmaceutical drugs in reducing plasma lipids, dietary and pharmacologic interventions can work together.
Abstract
CONTEXT Although a recent meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials showed that adoption of a vegetarian diet reduces plasma lipids, the association between vegetarian diets and long-term effects on plasma lipids has not been subjected to meta-analysis. OBJECTIVE The aim was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies and clinical trials that have examined associations between plant-based diets and plasma lipids. DATA SOURCES MEDLINE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched for articles published in English until June 2015. STUDY SELECTION The literature was searched for controlled trials and observational studies that investigated the effects of at least 4 weeks of a vegetarian diet on plasma lipids. DATA EXTRACTION Two reviewers independently extracted the study methodology and sample size, the baseline characteristics of the study population, and the concentrations and variance measures of plasma lipids. Mean differences in concentrations of plasma lipids between vegetarian and comparison diet groups were calculated. Data were pooled using a random-effects model. RESULTS Of the 8385 studies identified, 30 observational studies and 19 clinical trials met the inclusion criteria (N = 1484; mean age, 48.6 years). Consumption of vegetarian diets was associated with lower mean concentrations of total cholesterol (-29.2 and -12.5 mg/dL, P < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-22.9 and -12.2 mg/dL, P < 0.001), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-3.6 and -3.4 mg/dL, P < 0.001), compared with consumption of omnivorous diets in observational studies and clinical trials, respectively. Triglyceride differences were -6.5 (P = 0.092) in observational studies and 5.8 mg/dL (P = 0.090) in intervention trials. CONCLUSIONS Plant-based diets are associated with decreased total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, but not with decreased triglycerides. There is a growing link between being overweight or obese and the onset of certain cancers. The latest research shows that 30-35% of cancers may have a link to diet, and that metabolic syndromes involving obesity encourage the body to store metabolically active ‘sick fats’ in adipose tissue, which in turn causes inflammation and creates an environment for cancer to thrive. The Mediterranean diet (MD) is considered one of the healthiest in the world and rates of cancer and metabolic syndrome are lower in the Mediterranean region versus Northern Europe suggesting it may be helpful in prevention of obesity and cancer. The MD is characterised as a balanced combination of fruit and vegetables, fish, cereals, and polyunsaturated fats (such as olive oil), with a reduced consumption of meat and dairy products and moderate intake of alcohol, primarily red wine. The nutrients that are found in abundance in the MD have a mixture of anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity properties thanks to antioxidant elements, fibre and healthy polyunsaturated fats. Studies show these nutrients can help support multiple metabolic markers such as blood pressure, cholesterol, inflammation, and insulin sensitivity. In 2010, UNESCO proclaimed the MD as “World Cultural Heritage”. This diet represents a behavioural model, a “way of life”, that can ensure longer life expectancy and improve quality of life itself.
Abstract
Obesity symbolizes a major public health problem. Overweight and obesity are associated to the occurrence of the metabolic syndrome and to adipose tissue dysfunction. The adipose tissue is metabolically active and an endocrine organ, whose dysregulation causes a low-grade inflammatory state and ectopic fat depositions. The Mediterranean Diet represents a possible therapy for metabolic syndrome, preventing adiposopathy or "sick fat" formation.The Mediterranean Diet exerts protective effects in elderly subjects with and without baseline of chronic diseases. Recent studies have demonstrated a relationship between cancer and obesity. In the US, diet represents amount 30-35% of death causes related to cancer. Currently, the cancer is the second cause of death after cardiovascular diseases worldwide. Furthermore, populations living in the Mediterranean area have a decreased incidence of cancer compared with populations living in Northern Europe or the US, likely due to healthier dietary habits. The bioactive food components have a potential preventive action on cancer. The aims of this review are to evaluate the impact of Mediterranean Diet on onset, progression and regression of metabolic syndrome, cancer and on longevity.
