Given the association between NAFLD and metabolic syndrome [11,12], lifestyle modification can improve patients’ life quality and prognosis. The aim of this study was to assess the joint association of several modifiable lifestyle factors with overall and cause-specific mortality among NAFLD individuals and depict the mortality risk of varied composite modes of lifestyle. This study is a large, nationally representative, population-based study. It is based on the NHANES III (1988–1994, the National Center for Health Statistics, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention), which used a complex multistage probability design to recruit a representative sample of participants. Results show a protective effect among NAFLD participants following a healthy lifestyle, particularly impacting CVD-related mortality. Notably, among the most common lifestyle factor combinations, the effect of risk reduction on mortality was particularly strong when smoking was avoided. Authors conclude that their findings can be a useful tool to help the general public and patients with NAFLD to understand the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS It is unclear whether a healthy lifestyle impacts mortality in the presence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The present study aimed to examine the joint association of several modifiable lifestyle factors with mortality risk for NAFLD patients. METHODS We collected lifestyle behavior data form the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III from 1988 to 1994 and follow-up data form NHANES III-linked mortality data through 2015. We estimated joint association between four healthy lifestyle factors (non-smoking, non-drinking, regular physical activity, a healthy diet) after NAFLD diagnosis and mortality using Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS During a median of 22.83 years of follow-up, 2932 deaths occurred. The risk of all-cause mortality decreased significantly with the healthy lifestyle scores increasing (p < 0.001). NAFLD patients with a favorable lifestyle (3 or 4 healthy lifestyle factors) reduced 36% of all-cause mortality and 43% of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality compared with those with an unfavorable lifestyle (0 or 1 healthy lifestyle factor) (HR, 0.64 [95% CI, 0.50-0.81], 0.57 [95% CI, 0.37-0.88]). Compared with the non-NAFLD group, the number of NAFLD patients required to adhere to a favorable lifestyle to prevent one cardiovascular disease death in 20 years was fewer (77 vs. 125). CONCLUSIONS For the NAFLD patients, adopting a healthy lifestyle could significantly reduce their risk of death.

Peanuts contain bioactive substances that are beneficial for cardiovascular health. This three-arm, parallel-group randomised controlled trial (ARISTOTLE) and meta-analysis evaluated the beneficial effects of high-oleic peanuts and peanut butter in improving cardiometabolic health. Participants in the randomised controlled trial consumed 25 g of skin-roasted peanuts or 32 g of peanut butter, or a control butter made with peanut oil without fibre and polyphenols for six months. The skin-roasted peanuts group showed a reduction in total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratios. The meta-analysis was highly heterogeneous in participant ethnicity, health status, peanut intervention dosage and duration. The dosage of peanuts, peanut butter and high oleic peanuts used was between 25 and 200 g/day. The participants were healthy, with metabolic syndrome (MeS), or at risk of MeS. There was a significant increase in body weight among those with or at risk of MeS. In addition, healthy participants showed reduced triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratios. Healthcare professionals can use the results of this research to understand the beneficial impact of peanut consumption on the lipid profile. However, further robust studies are required due to the high heterogeneity of the included studies in the meta-analysis.
Abstract
UNLABELLED Although numerous studies have reported the protective effect of nut consumption on cardiovascular risk, evidence for the role of peanuts in maintaining cardiometabolic health is inconclusive. Presented here are the results from the ARISTOTLE study, a parallel randomized controlled trial evaluating the impact of regular peanut intake on anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical measurements. The 63 healthy subjects that completed the study consumed their habitual diet plus either: a) 25 g/day of skin roasted peanuts (SRP, n = 21), b) two tablespoons (32 g)/day of peanut butter (PB, n = 23) or c) two tablespoons (32 g)/day of a control butter based on peanut oil (CB, n = 19) for 6 months. In addition, a meta-analysis of clinical trials, including data from the ARISTOTLE study, was carried out to update the evidence for the effects of consuming peanuts, including high-oleic peanuts, and peanut butter on healthy subjects and those at high cardiometabolic risk. After a systematic search on PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Scopus databases up to July 2021, 11 studies were found to meet the eligibility criteria. In the ARISTOTLE study, lower total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratios were found in the SRP group compared to the CB group (p = 0.019 and p = 0.008). The meta-analysis of clinical trials revealed that peanut consumption is associated with a decrease in triglycerides (MD: -0.13; 95% CI, -0.20 to -0.07; p < 0.0001) and that healthy consumers had lower total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratios compared to the control groups (MD: -0.40; 95% CI, -0.71 to -0.09; p = 0.01 and MD: -0.19; 95% CI, -0.36 to -0.01; p = 0.03, respectively). However, individuals at high cardiometabolic risk experienced an increase in body weight after the peanut interventions (MD: 0.97; 95% CI, 0.54 to 1.41; p < 0.0001), although not in body fat or body mass index. According to the dose-response analyses, body weight increased slightly with higher doses of peanuts. In conclusion, a regular consumption of peanuts seems to modulate lipid metabolism, reducing triglyceride blood levels. Metabolic syndrome is a condition characterised by at least three of the five risk factors, such as abdominal obesity, elevated fasting glucose, blood pressure and triglycerides and reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). There is a strong link between metabolic syndrome and the development of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes. Research suggests that increasing consumption of flavonoid-rich foods can be beneficial in reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Flavonoids are bioactive compounds that possess antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous, anti-mutagenic, and enzymatic properties. This systematic review of 29 randomised controlled trials evaluated the beneficial effects of long-term flavonoid supplementation in reducing the risk factors of metabolic syndrome. This review included a variety of flavonoid supplements, such as anthocyanin, hesperidin, quercetin, epigallocatechin gallate (egcg), genistein, theaflavin, catechin, and eriocitrin. Additionally, this research investigated the mechanisms behind the beneficial effects of flavonoid supplementation. Results showed that flavonoid supplementation for at least three weeks improved metabolic parameters and inflammatory markers, with hesperidin showing the greatest improvements in metabolic parameters. Healthcare professionals can use these findings to understand the potential benefits of long-term flavonoid supplementation in improving metabolic parameters. However, more robust studies are needed to determine the therapeutic dosages of different flavonoids.
Abstract
Diets high in bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, have been used to mitigate metabolic syndrome (MetS). Polyphenols are a large group of naturally occurring bioactive compounds, classified into two main classes: non-flavonoids and flavonoids. Flavonoids are distributed in foods, such as fruits, vegetables, tea, red wine, and cocoa. Studies have already demonstrated the benefits of flavonoids on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, as well as cancer cells. The present review summarizes the results of clinical studies that evaluated the effects of flavonoids on the components of the MetS and associated complications when offered as supplements over the long term. The results show that flavonoids can significantly modulate several metabolic parameters, such as lipid profile, blood pressure, and blood glucose. Only theaflavin and catechin were unable to affect metabolic parameters. Moreover, only body weight and body mass index were unaltered. Thus, the evidence presented in this systematic review offers bases in support of a flavonoid supplementation, held for at least 3 weeks, as a strategy to improve several metabolic parameters and, consequently, reduce the risk of diseases associated with MetS. This fact becomes stronger due to the rare side effects reported with flavonoids.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common form of chronic liver disease. Individuals with NAFLD are at a significantly increased risk of heart disease and is the leading cause of death in these individuals. Lifestyle modification is the main therapy for NAFLD, namely increased exercise and diet alteration. In addition, natural therapies such as curcumin may also be of benefit as it has been shown to improve factors such as inflammation and oxidative stress, which contribute to NAFLD. This randomised control trial of 50 individuals with NAFLD aimed to determine the effect of adding curcumin to lifestyle modifications on NAFLD. After 12-weeks it was shown that there were no additional benefits of adding 1.5g of curcumin to lifestyle modifications on degree of fatty liver, insulin resistance, heart disease and body morphology. It was concluded that the addition of curcumin has no additional benefits to dietary modification and increased exercise for improving NAFLD. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand that lifestyle modifications are still the leading non-pharmacological treatment of NAFLD and individuals with the disease should be in consultation with a nutritionist and an exercise therapist.
Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Curcumin has been shown to exert glucose-lowering and anti-atherosclerotic effects in type 2 diabetes. Hence, we investigated curcumin's effects on atherogenesis markers, fatty liver, insulin resistance, and adipose tissue-related indicators in patients with NAFLD. In this secondary analysis of a 12-week randomized controlled trial, fifty-two patients with NAFLD received lifestyle modification. In addition, they were randomly allocated to either the curcumin group (1.5 g/day) or the matching placebo. Outcome variables (assessed before and after the study) were: the fatty liver index (FLI), hepatic steatosis index (HSI), fatty liver score (FLS), BMI, age, ALT, TG score (BAAT), triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, Castelli risk index-I (CRI-I), Castelli risk index-II (CRI-II), TG/HDL-C ratio, atherogenic coefficient (AC), atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), lipoprotein combine index (LCI), cholesterol index (CHOLINDEX), lipid accumulation product (LAP), body adiposity index (BAI), visceral adiposity index (VAI), metabolic score for visceral fat (METS-VF), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) values. The TyG index decreased in the curcumin group and increased in the placebo group, with a significant difference between the groups (p = 0.029). However, a between-group change was not significant after adjustment for multiple testing. Other indices were not significantly different between the groups either before or after multiple test correction. After the intervention, there was a lower number of patients with severe fatty liver (FLI ≥ 60) and metabolic syndrome in the curcumin group compared to the placebo (p = 0.021 and p = 0.012, respectively). In conclusion, curcumin offers no additional cardiometabolic benefits to lifestyle intervention in patients with NAFLD.

MetS is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes mellitus and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of curcumin and/or coenzyme Q10 supplementation on metabolic syndrome components in subjects with MetS. This study is a 2×2 factorial, randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study which was conducted for 12 weeks. Eighty-eight subjects were randomly assigned into four groups. All subjects completed the trial. Results show that curcumin supplementation improves lipid profile, but it does not have any effect on body composition, hypertension and fasting plasma glucose. However, supplementation with coenzyme Q10 as well as curcumin plus coenzyme Q10 did not show any significant effects on lipid profile, body composition, hypertension and fasting plasma glucose. Authors conclude that curcumin supplementation (especially by its effects on dyslipidaemia) is more effective than coenzyme Q10 as well as the combination of curcumin and coenzyme Q10 in the management of MetS. However, curcumin, coenzyme Q10 and their combination have no effect on body composition, hypertension and glycaemic control.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) as a cluster of conditions including hyperlipidemia, hypertension, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and abdominal obesity is linked to cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Evidence suggested that intake of curcumin and coenzyme Q10 may have therapeutic effects in the management of MetS. AIMS We investigated the effects of curcumin and/or coenzyme Q10 supplementation on metabolic syndrome components including systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), waist circumference (WC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) as primary outcomes, and total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c) and body mass index (BMI) as secondary outcomes in subjects with MetS. METHODS In this 2 × 2 factorial, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study, 88 subjects with MetS were randomly assigned into four groups including curcumin plus placebo (CP), or coenzyme Q10 plus placebo (QP), or curcumin plus coenzyme Q10 (CQ), or double placebo (DP) for 12 weeks. RESULTS The CP group compared with the three other groups showed a significant reduction in HDL-c (P = 0.001), TG (P < 0.001), TC (P < 0.001), and LDL-c (P < 0.001). No significant differences were seen between the four groups in terms of SBP, DBP, FPG, WC, BMI and weight. CONCLUSION Curcumin improved dyslipidemia, but had no effect on body composition, hypertension and glycemic control. Furthermore, coenzyme Q10 as well as the combination of curcumin and coenzyme Q10 showed no therapeutic effects in subjects with MetS. This condition is often linked to other health issues such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and they share common diagnostic biomarkers. An unhealthy diet and lifestyle are also linked to the progression of NAFLD. Mediterranean diet is a predominantly plant-based diet that may have an association with lower risk and reduced severity of NAFLD. This multicentre, prospective, randomised controlled trial included one hundred and thirty-six NAFLD patients to analyse the effect of Mediterranean diet adherence on NAFLD in patients with metabolic syndrome. The NAFLD patients followed a personalised Mediterranean diet and physical activity interventions for six months. Individuals with greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet and physical activity interventions showed improvements in body mass index, body weight, waist circumference, blood pressure and intrahepatic fat content after six months of intervention. Healthcare professionals can use the results of this study to understand the benefits of adherence to the Mediterranean diet and physical activity interventions in reducing NAFLD severity and metabolic irregularities. However, due to the small sample size of this study, further robust studies are required to evaluate the benefits of different dietary strategies, the therapeutic value of different food items and the intervention duration required to achieve improvements in NAFLD and metabolic syndrome.
Abstract
Unhealthy diet is an important factor in the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Previous studies showed the benefits of a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) on Metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and cardiovascular diseases, which usually have a pathophysiological relationship with NAFLD. To assess the effect of adherence to a MedDiet on NAFLD in MetS patients after lifestyle intervention, this multicentre (Mallorca and Navarra, Spain) prospective randomized trial, with personalized nutritional intervention based on a customized MedDiet, coupled with physical activity promotion was performed to prevent, and reverse NAFLD among patients with MetS. The current analysis included 138 patients aged 40 to 60 years old, Body Mass Index (BMI) 27-40 kg/m2, diagnosed with NAFLD using MRI, and MetS according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to assess dietary intake. Adherence to Mediterranean diet by means of a 17-item validated questionnaire, anthropometrics, physical activity, blood pressure, blood biochemical parameters, and intrahepatic fat contents (IFC) were measured. The independent variable used was changes in MedDiet adherence, categorized in tertiles after 6 months follow-up. Subjects with high adherence to the MedDiet showed higher decreases in BMI, body weight, WC, SBP, DBP, and IFC. An association between improvement in adherence to the MedDiet and amelioration of IFC after 6-month follow-up was observed. High adherence to the MedDiet is associated with better status of MetS features, and better values of IFC.

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) affects more than 463 million people worldwide. Similarly, the number of deaths related to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has increased by 145%. There are several common risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes and AD, including obesity, insulin resistance, and ageing, as well as common pathological mechanisms, including altered insulin signalling, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, formation of glycated proteins and metabolic syndrome. This review aims to summarize the therapeutic effects of different nutritional therapy strategies on the reduction of DM and AD risk. Controlling blood sugar levels and reducing calorie intake is crucial to preventing diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. The low-carbohydrate, ketogenic, and Mediterranean diets have been found to improve glucose control in people with Type 2 diabetes (T2D). In addition, MIND (Mediterranean-DASH Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) and a ketogenic diet may improve cognition in AD patients. Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium probiotics, and prebiotics, such as inulin, may inhibit the progression of T2D and AD diseases by suppressing inflammation and modulating gut microbes. In addition, vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, B12, folate, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, zinc, magnesium, and polyphenols may improve cognitive decline, homocysteine levels, and insulin resistance in AD and T2D patients. Healthcare professionals can use the results of this review to understand the beneficial effects of dietary strategies and multi-nutrient supplementation on DM and AD. However, further robust studies are required to investigate the risk factors and underlying mechanisms behind DM-combined AD progression.
Abstract
The combined disease burden of diabetes mellitus (DM) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) is increasing, and the two diseases share some common pathological changes. However, the pharmacotherapeutic approach to this clinical complexity is limited to symptomatic rather than disease-arresting, with the possible exception of metformin. Whether nutritional intervention might extend or synergize with these effects of metformin is of interest. In particular, dietary patterns with an emphasis on dietary diversity shown to affect cognitive function are of growing interest in a range of food cultural settings. This paper presents the association between diabetes and AD. In addition, the cross-cultural nutritional intervention programs with the potential to mitigate both insulin resistance (IR) and hyperglycemia, together with cognitive impairment are also reviewed. Both dietary patterns and nutritional supplementation showed the effects of improving glycemic control and reducing cognitive decline in diabetes associated with AD, but the intervention specificity remained controversial. Multi-nutrient supplements combined with diverse diets may have preventive and therapeutic potential for DM combined with AD, at least as related to the B vitamin group and folate-dependent homocysteine (Hcy). The nutritional intervention has promise in the prevention and management of DM and AD comorbidities, and more clinical studies would be of nutritional scientific merit.

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a collection of conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure and impaired ability to balance blood sugars, that increase the sufferers risk of diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. Weight loss and lifestyle modifications are the main recommendations to improve MS. Intermittent fasting is a dietary regime that involves restricting the intake of food to certain times of the day, without restricting calories and has been shown in animal and human studies to result in fat loss and an increased ability to balance blood sugars. This randomised control trial of 218 adults over 6 months aimed to firstly determine relationships between eating duration, unprocessed and processed foods, and lifestyle factors on health and secondly to determine if a 12-hour time restricted eating pattern leads to an improvement in MS. The results showed that higher consumption of processed foods was associated with poorer metabolic health. A 12-hour restricted eating pattern resulted in weight loss, whereas individuals on a standard daily eating pattern did not, however differences between the two groups were not significant. Other measures of metabolic health failed to show any differences between the two groups. It was concluded that a 12-hour restricted eating pattern was feasible over 6 months, however further research is needed to assess if a more restricted time would result in greater weight loss. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand that a restricted eating pattern may be of benefit to those with MS, however further research would be needed to determine the optimal timeframe.
Abstract
Weight loss is key to controlling the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components, i.e., central obesity, hypertension, prediabetes and dyslipidaemia. The goals of our study were two-fold. First, we characterised the relationships between eating duration, unprocessed and processed food consumption and metabolic health. During 4 weeks of observation, 213 adults used a smartphone application to record food and drink consumption, which was annotated for food processing levels following the NOVA classification. Low consumption of unprocessed food and low physical activity showed significant associations with multiple MS components. Second, in a pragmatic randomised controlled trial, we compared the metabolic benefits of 12 h time-restricted eating (TRE) to standard dietary advice (SDA) in 54 adults with an eating duration > 14 h and at least one MS component. After 6 months, those randomised to TRE lost 1.6% of initial body weight (SD 2.9, p = 0.01), compared to the absence of weight loss with SDA (-1.1%, SD 3.5, p = 0.19). There was no significant difference in weight loss between TRE and SDA (between-group difference -0.88%, 95% confidence interval -3.1 to 1.3, p = 0.43). Our results show the potential of smartphone records to predict metabolic health and highlight that further research is needed to improve individual responses to TRE such as a shorter eating window or its actual clock time.

Physical activity can reduce the prevalence of gallstone disease among males: An observational study.

Gallstone disease (GD) is one of the most common digestive disorders and can cause acute abdominal pain, jaundice, and abnormal liver function due to stones deposited in the gallbladder or bile ducts. Metabolic syndrome is a known risk factor for GD and physical activity (PA) can reduce the incidence of metabolic syndrome. The aim of this observational study was to evaluate whether PA can reduce the risk of GD in a Korean population. 8908 subjects were included in this study, GD was diagnosed by ultrasound and PA was defined as moderate-intensity aerobic PA for at least 150 minutes, or vigorous-intensity activity for at least 75 minutes throughout the week. Participants underwent physical investigation and had blood samples taken to establish metabolic syndrome markers. In men, PA, old age and higher AST (aspartate aminotransferase, a liver enzyme) were independent risk factors for GD, whilst in women only a history of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, but not PA, was independently associated with GD.
Abstract
Several previous studies have reported that physical activity (PA) levels can independently affect the prevalence of gallstone disease (GD) in Western countries. However, this association has not been reported in Eastern countries. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether PA is an independent determinant of GD prevalence in a Korean population, according to the World Health Organizations Global Recommendations on PA for Health.A total of 8908 subjects who completed a questionnaire underwent medical examination and ultrasound scanning at the Health Promotion Center of the Jeju National University Hospital between January 2009 and December 2018. GD and fatty liver disease were diagnosed by abdominal ultrasound. Biochemical parameters and body mass index were determined, and metabolic syndrome status, age, and PA levels were extracted from medical records. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify independent factors affecting GD.The estimated rates of PA and GD among male subjects were 23.7% and 4.6%, whereas the rates among females were 18.4% and 4.2%, respectively. Multivariate analysis suggested that no PA, old age, and higher aspartate aminotransferase level in males and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease status in females were independent factors affecting GD.In our study, PA was associated with a reduction in GD among males but not females.

Sarcopenia is characterised by the loss of muscle mass, decrease of muscle strength and decline of physical performance and is related to reduced physical ability, impaired cardiorespiratory function, disability and death in the elderly. Type 2 diabetics are at higher risk of developing sarcopenia. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate clinical characteristics of sarcopenia in elderly type 2 diabetics in the Northeast of China. 132 participants completed the study which was based on self-reported medical and lifestyle history, and clinical evaluations including measurements of weight, height and muscle strength, imaging to establish sarcopenia and blood tests. 28.8% of participants had sarcopenia. Age, increased truncal fat mass and increased free thyroxine increased the risk of sarcopenia, whilst regular exercise, being female, taking metformin, a higher body mass index and increased trunk skeletal mass were associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia. The authors point out that limitations include the small sample size and that, as this is a cross-sectional study, cause and effect cannot be established.
Abstract
Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome and it impairs physical function. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are at a higher risk of sarcopenia. The purpose of this study is to explore characteristics of general information and metabolic factors of sarcopenia in patients with T2DM in the northeast of China, and provide information for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia in clinical practice.Patients with T2DM aged ≥65 were recruited in Changchun from March 2017 to February 2018. Questionnaires of general information, physical examination, laboratory and imaging examination were conducted. The patients were assigned into sarcopenia group and non-sarcopenia group according to the diagnostic criteria proposed by Asian working group for sarcopenia (AWGS), and the differences between 2 groups were analyzed.A total of 132 participants were included in this study, of which, 38 (28.8%) were diagnosed with sarcopenia. 94 (71.2%) were with no sarcopenia. Logistic regression analysis showed that age (OR: 1.182, 95%CI: 1.038-1.346), trunk fat mass (TFM) (OR: 1.499, 95%CI: 1.146-1.960) and free thyroxine (FT4) (OR: 1.342, 95%CI: 1.102-1.635) were independent risk factors for sarcopenia. BMI (body mass index) (OR: 0.365, 95%CI: 0.236-0.661), exercise (OR: 0.016, 95%CI: 0.001-0.169), female (OR: 0.000, 95%CI: 0.00-0.012), metformin (OR: 0.159, 95%CI: 0.026-0.967) and TSM (trunk skeletal muscle mass) (OR: 0.395, 95%CI: 0.236-0.661) were protective factors for sarcopenia.Sarcopenia in patients with T2DM is associated with increased age, increased TFM and increased FT4 level. Regular exercise, female, metformin administrations, high BMI and increased TSM are associated with lower risk of sarcopenia.
